In a post-Christian culture, parish clergy can find themselves at a
loss, ill-equipped to deal with a reality for which seminary did
not prepare them. As a result, the Church and its clergy can seem
to flounder from one "program" to the next or get enamored with
secular self-help strategies. To learn to lead well in this new
context, the Church needs to help clergy refocus on what both works
and is true to their tradition and theology. Enter Scott Benhase,
whose Done and Left Undone proposes an ascetical theology of
leadership based in St. Benedict's Promise of Stability, Obedience,
and Conversion of Life. The Promise helps clergy move forward from
their inward identity to their outward askesis (discipline), their
inner life experience of resting in the mercy of God's grace in
harmony with their outward role in the church. Benhase believes
parish clergy can lead faithfully and well without following a
program or leadership style that does not fit them. Leading from
ascetical grace does not require parish clergy to be something they
are not. It invites them, rather, to a way of being and an askesis
that will help them be both faithful and effective in parish
leadership.

The future of America, in many ways, depends upon an understanding
of the proper role of religion in our shared life as a republic.
Discussions and debates on the topic have too often generated
noise, platitudes, stereotypes, name-calling, and the distortion of
vitally important issues, instead of constructive conversation
among citizens--until now.
Of all the voices commenting about American religion today, none
is more credible or better known than that of historian Martin E.
Marty. A respected scholar, author, editor, and media commentator,
he has-perhaps better than anyone else in the field-a deep grasp on
the complex issues surrounding public religion.
In this open-access monograph, Paul Weller explores how the
movement known as Hizmet (meaning "service") is undergoing a period
of transitions in Europe. Inspired by the teaching and practice of
the Turkish Islamic scholar, Fethullah Gulen, Hizmet has been
active in Europe (and other continents) for several decades. It has
always been subject to some degree of contestation, which has
intensified following the July 2016 coup attempt in Turkey, for
which the current Turkish government holds Fethullah Gulen and
Hizmet as responsible - a claim they strongly deny. In Turkey,
thousands of people associated with Hizmet have been imprisoned. In
Europe, pressures have been brought to bear on the movement and its
activities. In charting a way forward, Hizmet finds itself in a
significant transitional period, the nature and possible future
trajectories of which are explored in this volume. The book is
informed by a comprehensive literature review and a recent research
project which includes primary research interviews with key Hizmet
figures in Europe and beyond. It contends that to properly
understand Hizmet in Europe, one has to situate it in its
interactive engagement both with its diverse European national
contexts and with Fethullah Gulen's teaching and practice.
Shamanism has been practised amongst communities all over the world for millennia, and continues to survive today in both modern and ancient forms. Shamanism: A Reader unites perspectives from disciplines including anthropology, psychology, musicology, botany to provide a unique overview of modern writing on shamanism. Juxtaposing the traditional practices of indigenous peoples with their new and often radically urban reinterpretations, experts including Michael Harner, Milhàly Hoppàl, Majorie M Balzer and Piers Vitebsky raise questions about constructions of shamanism, its efficacy, its use and misuse as a cultural symbol, and its real nature. Locating its material in the encounter between traditional and contemporary, and within many forms of response to the image of the shaman, Shamanism: A Reader is an essential tribute to the vitality and breadth of shamanic tradition both among its original practitioners of Europe, tribes of America and Asia, and within seemingly familiar aspects of the modern west. Representing the best of classic and current scholarship, and highlighting the diversity of approaches to shamanism in an accessible and user-friendly way, this clearly introduced and organised collection sets a new standard for shamanic study in terms of the breadth and depth of its coverage.
In 1756, Jacob Frank, an Ottoman Jew who had returned to the Poland
of his birth, was discovered leading a group of fellow travelers in
a suspect religious service. At the request of the local rabbis,
Polish authorities arrested the participants. Jewish authorities
contacted the bishop in whose diocese the service had taken place
and argued that since the rites of Frank's followers involved the
practice of magic and immoral conduct, both Jews and Christians
should condemn them and burn them at the stake. The scheme
backfired, as the Frankists took the opportunity to ally themselves
with the Church, presenting themselves as Contra-Talmudists who
believed in a triune God. As a Turkish subject, Frank was released
and temporarily expelled to the Ottoman territories, but the others
were found guilty of breaking numerous halakhic prohibitions and
were subject to a Jewish ban of excommunication. While they
professed their adherence to everything that was commanded by God
in the Old Testament, they asserted as well that the Rabbis of old
had introduced innumerable lies and misconstructions in their
interpretations of that holy book. Who were Jacob Frank and his
followers? To most Christians, they seemed to be members of a
Jewish sect; to Jewish reformers, they formed a group making a
valiant if misguided attempt to bring an end to the power of the
rabbis; and to more traditional Jews, they were heretics to be
suppressed by the rabbinate. What is undeniable is that by the late
eighteenth century, the Frankists numbered in the tens of thousands
and had a significant political and ideological influence on
non-Jewish communities throughout eastern and central Europe. Based
on extensive archival research in Poland, the Czech Republic,
Israel, Germany, the United States, and the Vatican, The Mixed
Multitude is the first comprehensive study of Frank and Frankism in
more than a century and offers an important new perspective on
Jewish-Christian relations in the Age of Enlightenment.
St Patrick is one of the best-known and best-loved saints in the
world. His life and legacy is deeply ingrained in Irish history and
society, as the annual 17 March celebrations in Ireland and across
the globe show. Northern Ireland now has its own St Patrick's
trail, and many pilgrims flock to sites such as St Patrick's
Purgatory and Croagh Patrick. In The St Patrick's Treasury John
Killen brings together the legends, folklore, traditions and
stories that have been associated with St Patrick across the
centuries. Richly illustrated throughout, this is a unique
celebration of Ireland's patron saint, and a collection to
treasure.
Russel Williams is one of the most remarkable enlightened spiritual
teachers of our time. After an early life of extreme
hardship-leaving school at the age of 11, and becoming an orphan
shortly afterwards-he underwent a spiritual awakening at the age of
29. Since the late 1950s, he has been a spiritual teacher, and is
still actively teaching now, at the age of 94. Previously, Russel
has avoided publicity and never published any writings or
transcripts of his talks, preferring to work quietly with small
groups. This is the first time any details of his teachings or of
his life have appeared in print. This book is partly a record of
his teachings, and partly also the story of his extraordinary life.
Working with well-known spiritual author Steve Taylor-who has
attended Russel's meetings regularly since the 1990s-Russel has
created a profound text which will surely become known as a classic
of spiritual literature.
From 1642 to 1654 Isaac Aboab da Fonseca was the hakham (Torah
scholar) and spiritual leader of the oldest Jewish community in the
New World. As a Hebrew grammarian, a poet, and a mystic, as well as
an excellent and very popular preacher, Aboab da Fonseca (born
1605) was not only one of the most interesting Jewish personalities
of the seventeenth century, but his writings are an invaluable
historical resource with regard to many aspects of Jewish life in
Dutch Colonial Brazil, the local attitudes towards Jews, and
corroboration of events outlined in contemporary literary sources.
His forebears were so-called New Christians, having undergone
compulsory conversion to Catholicism in Portugal. In order to be
able to live freely as professing Jews, the family moved in about
1612 to Amsterdam. There, Hakham Isaac Uziel of Fez became his
Talmud teacher; among his colleagues was Menasseh Ben Israel. In
1638 he was confirmed as one of the four hakhamim of the new
congregation Talmud Torah of Amsterdam. In 1641/42 he accepted the
nomination for hakham of the growing Jewish community in Recife,
Brazil, where he was in charge of all rabbinical functions and gave
lectures in Talmud and Hebrew. In the interim he wrote the Hebrew
grammar Melekhet ha-Dikduk, published here in translation for the
first time. Aboab da Fonseca enjoyed a few prosperous years until
the Portuguese rebellion caused the economic ruin of the Jews of
Dutch Brazil. His salary much reduced, he nevertheless remained to
lead and help his people until the occupation of Recife by
Brazilian-Portuguese troops on January 26, 1654. Upon returning to
Amsterdam, his inclination toward mysticism made him one of the
leading believers in the false messiah Shabbetai Zvi. But his
writing and scholarship remained undiminished: In 1646 he wrote
Zekher asiti leniflaot El, in which he described events in Dutch
Brazil after the outbreak of the war; he also published a Hebrew
translation of the Spanish cabbalistic works of Abraham Cohen
Herrera, Casa de Dios y Puerta del Cielo, under the title Shaar
ha-Shamayim (The Gate of Heaven). This first scholarly monograph on
Isaac Aboab da Fonseca and his intellectual and spiritual
contributions, includes discussion of his commentary on the
Pentateuch entitled Parafrasis Comentada sobre el Pentateuco, as
well as a consideration of Aboab's involvement in the ban of
Spinoza.
As the Messenger of God, Muhammad stands at the heart of the
Islamic religion, revered by Muslims throughout the world. The
Cambridge Companion to Muhammad comprises a collection of essays by
some of the most accomplished scholars in the field exploring the
life and legacy of the Prophet. The book is divided into three
sections, the first charting his biography and the milieu into
which he was born, the revelation of the Qur'ān, and his role
within the early Muslim community. The second part assesses his
legacy as a law-maker, philosopher, and politician and, finally, in
the third part, chapters examine how Muhammad has been remembered
across history in biography, prose, poetry, and, most recently, in
film and fiction. Essays are written to engage and inform students,
teachers, and readers coming to the subject for the first time.
They will come away with a deeper appreciation of the breadth of
the Islamic tradition, of the centrality of the role of the Prophet
in that tradition, and, indeed, of what it means to be a Muslim
today.

Saladin is perhaps the one and only Muslim ruler who emerges with
any clarity in standard tales and histories of the Crusades; this
is a translation of Baha' al-Din Ibn Shaddad's account of his life
and career. Ibn Shaddad (1144-1234) was clearly a great admirer of
Saladin and was a close associate of his, serving as his qadi
al-'askar (judge of the army), from 1188 until Saladin's death in
1193. His position and his access to information make this an
authoritative and essential source for Saladin's career, while his
personal relationship with the sultan adds a sympathetic and moving
element to the account of his final years. Aside from its inherent
value as a source for the history of Egypt and the Middle East, it
therefore provides a much-needed complement and corrective to the
widely-known Latin accounts of the Crusades and the Latin Kingdom
of Jerusalem in the 12th century. The present translation is based
on a fuller edition of the text than that used in the previous
19th-century translation, and takes into account the translator's
readings of the earliest manuscript of the work, dated July 1228.
John Collins, author of the ground-breaking study Diakonia,
explores the pastoral implications of a new scholarly understanding
of the role of deacons in the Early Church. In many churches today
-- Catholic, Anglican, and others -- deacons have come to serve
largely as servants of the poor and needy. In Deacons and the
Church, Collins argues that this limited role for deacons was based
on misinterpretations of key scriptural passages. Following the
history of deacons in the Early Church to modern times, Collins
offers extensive reflections on the relevant Scriptures, and
suggests that we redefine the role of deacons for today. Rather
than limit the role of deacons, he urges the church to adapt
ancient meanings to modern pastoral situations. In the words of
Ignatius of Antioch, whom he quotes in the final chapter, "Deacons
are not providers of bread and drink but are agents of the
congregation."
Collins paints a rich picture of deacons as agents of the
church, ordained to the service of the bishop, who sends them forth
as ministers of the church as a whole, rather than simply social
workers. Collins provides an understanding of deacons that embraces
social welfare but is not bound by it.

A pastor can't go it alone. With the stress that comes with a life
of service, leaders can too easily stumble, burn out, or feel the
need to leave the ministry altogether. But with the support of
others who've been there, you can increase your impact on the
people you serve and enjoy a more rewarding ministry. Leaders That
Last provides the solution to the problem of going it alone.
Submitting to a mentoring relationship, building strong
friendships, and being challenged by fellow pastors to stay
faithful to the call provide for vital balance while allowing for
growth. The proven Pastors in Covenant model described in this book
shows how to form small help groups with other trusted colleagues.
These teams hold one another personally and professionally
accountable and provide a lifeline during troubled times. "As you
well know, Focus on the Family's Ministry Outreach division
receives thousands of calls every year from pastors (or their
families) in crisis. I'm convinced that a great many of these
situations could be avoided if ministers had a proactive support
system like the one Kinnamen and Ells offer."-H. B. London, Jr.,
vice president, ministry outreach/pastoral ministries, Focus on the
Family
In this unique and important book, now celebrating its 20th
anniversary, one of the world's great spiritual leaders offers his
practical wisdom and advice on how we can overcome everyday human
problems and achieve lasting happiness. The Art of Happiness is a
highly accessible guide for a western audience, combining the Dalai
Lama's eastern spiritual tradition with Dr Howard C. Cutler's
western perspective. Covering all key areas of human experience,
they apply the principles of Tibetan Buddhism to everyday problems
and reveal how one can find balance and complete spiritual and
mental freedom. For the many who wish to understand more about the
Dalai Lama's approach to living, there has never been a book which
brings his beliefs so vividly into the real world.
Current church planting, growth, and development strategies cannot
be sustained. We need to work smarter in our rapidly changing
world. We must become disruptive. And yet we typically hesitate to
embrace change. We like our traditions. We prefer our familiar
patterns and comfortable ruts. Still, America has dramatically
changed. And make no mistake, such change is affecting the church,
and more change is coming. So the way we understand things must
also change. We must disrupt the status quo, create new patterns,
embrace new models, and promote new forms to advance the gospel in
our increasingly diverse and cynical society. In Disruption,
thought-leading author and pastor Mark DeYmaz presents a proven,
practical guide to help you rethink your approach to church.
Whether your congregation is currently growing, plateauing, or
declining, if you are a church planter or pastor, or a
denominational or network leader, this book is for you. Mark will
help you understand why we need to challenge conventional wisdom,
learn what new practices to establish and how current metrics are
not the primary measure of a church's influence. Disrupters turn
the way we do things on its head. They . . . break the mold, change
our thinking, and then hand us new rules for how things work can
see and sense what lies ahead, around the next corner not only
envision the future, but create and establish it challenge what is
and inspire what is to come Mark DeYmaz is a disrupter. And in
Disruption he challenges you to join him in preparing the American
church for the unpredictable future. To advance spiritual, social,
and financial transformation in your city, read this book to become
more like Christ-a disruptor.
