Sam Bardaouil, Till Fellrath
R640 Discovery Miles 6 400 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The publication The Architecture of Deception / Confinement / Transformation accompanies the eponymously titled exhibition trilogy at BNKR - current reflections on art and architecture in Munich and showcases 18 diverse artistic standpoints at the intersection of art and architecture. Each chapter directly corresponds to the evolving history of the exhibition space, which was originally constructed as a camouflaged air-raid bunker during the Second World War, then used as a postwar internment camp, and finally transformed into its current state as a mixed-use residential and office building. The Architecture of Deception explores notions of illusion and deception, the creation of new realities, truth versus fiction; Confinement explores notions of shelters and safety, captivity and freedom, 'outside' versus 'inside'; Transformation explores notions of gentrification, decay and definition of living spaces. With contributions by the editors, David Adjaye and Nikolaus Hirsch, Isabelle Doucet, and Madeleine Freund. Artists: The Architecture of Deception: Hans Op de Beeck, Emmanuelle Laine, Bettina Pousttchi, Gregor Sailer, Cortis & Sonderegger, The Swan Collective; The Architecture of Confinement: Ramzi Ben Sliman, Mona Hatoum, Nadia Kaabi-Linke, Annika Kahrs, OEzgur Kar, Joanna Piotrovska; The Architecture of Transformation: Dana Awartani, Olivier Goethals, Eva Nielsen, Jeremy Shaw, Hannah Weinberger, Andrea Zittel.

La Ruta del Peregrino (the pilgrimage route) stretches a distance of 117 kilometers through the vast and imposing mountain range of Jalisco, Mexico. Approximately two million people participate each year in this religious phenomenon to meet the Virgin of Talpa as an act of devotion, faith, and gratitude. This book conveys the feeling of travelling on the pilgrim's route and encountering architectural monuments and their infrastructure, like shelters and viewpoints, embedded in the harsh landscape. Each introduced landmark, designed by renowned architects, sparks a dialogue about sustainability and austerity, landscape and architecture. Landscape of Faith is a documentation of the way architecture can increase the identity of a pilgrimage route and add layers of meaning that reach far beyond the religious.

The Forgotten Country House - The Rise and Fall of Roundway Park (Hardcover): Simon Baynes The Forgotten Country House - The Rise and Fall of Roundway Park (Hardcover)
Simon Baynes
R788 R716 Discovery Miles 7 160 Save R72 (9%) Ships in 9 - 15 working days

This fine Palladian house known as New Park was built between 1777 and 1783 and became part of the golden age of the Georgian country house. Its owner, James Sutton, was one of a new breed of landowners, benefitting from the proceeds of the boom in late eighteenth century trade and from local political influence. The house was a celebration of the dynamism and success of Georgian Devizes, built on its thriving wool trade. As neoclassicism became the defining style for the late eighteenth English country house, New Park, later re-named Roundway Park, perfectly represented the high ambition of the age, the product of the prestigious architect, James Wyatt, and landscape designer, Humphry Repton. Roundway continued to prosper in the Victorian and Edwardian eras under the ownership of the Colston family of Bristol fame. In 1938, on the death of Rosalind Colston, the first Lady Roundway, the house and estate were, on the surface, indistinguishable from their Victorian heyday. But just sixteen years later, the estate had been sold and the house largely demolished as the effects of family tragedy and the weight of social and economic change took their toll. The Forgotten Country House tells for the first time the story of Roundway's rise and fall, the people who built and owned it, lived and worked there, and the contribution they made to their local community. It paints a vivid picture of the lives of gentry families who far outnumbered their more aristocratic counterparts and who played a central role in the rural communities that characterised much of Britain up until the mid-twentieth century. Part family history, part love letter to the English country house, Simon Baynes draws on family papers and new research to pay a fitting, evocative tribute not just to his ancestors, but also to a lost world and the people who lived in it.

The Country House - Material culture and consumption (Hardcover): Andrew Hann, Jon Stobart The Country House - Material culture and consumption (Hardcover)
Andrew Hann, Jon Stobart
R2,712 Discovery Miles 27 120 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book presents a series of conference papers which explore a topic that has received a good deal of interest in recent years, namely the material culture of the country house and its presentation to the public. This links in with academic interest in the consumption practices of the elite, and in the country house as a lived and living space, which was consciously transformed according to fashion and personal taste; but also ties in well with our concern as curators to present a coherent narrative of English Heritage and other properties and their contents to the modern visitor. The proceedings address a number of current academic debates about elite consumption practices, and the role of landed society as arbiters of taste. By looking at the country house as lived space many of the papers throw up interesting questions about the accumulation and arrangement of objects; the way in which rooms were used and experienced by both owners and visitors, and how this sense of `living history' can be presented meaningfully to the public. The conference was international in scope, so the experience in the United Kingdom can be compared with that in other European countries, throwing new light on our understanding of consumption and the country house.

In Artists' Homes, writer and photographer Tom Harford Thompson presents some thirty individual, eccentric houses and workspaces, from a music producer's studio in Hackney to an eco-warrior's treehouse on the Sussex Downs. His evocative photographs show how our live/work spaces, whether a tumbledown cottage, a country farmhouse or a reclaimed factory, are beautiful because of the lives we live in them. With work no longer separate from home life, we see how these artists function in the homes that inspire them, pursuing the life creative. Among the artists and craftspeople featured are Billy Childish, co-founder of the Stuckist art movement; Penny Rimbaud and Gee Vaucher, creative partners who set up their home and studio as an `anarchist-pacifist open house' (Dial House, in Essex); music producer Liam Watson of the famed London studio Toe Rag; vintage motorcycle dealer Ian Hatton, of cult shop Verrall's; vintner Peter Hall of Breaky Bottom Vineyard, one of the first wineries in the UK; and many more.

Eltham Palace is famous for its links with royalty and national events over a period of three and a half centuries, between the reigns of Edward I and James I. This richly illustrated book follows these important moments in the building's history, along with the parallel stories of its architecture, gardens, vineyards and parks. The staff responsible for its upkeep and the effects on the local community of having a royal building in its midst are also chronicled here. What remains of the Palace's former splendour today are the moat bridge, part of its outer court and the magnificent great hall, built for Edward IV, which survived long years of use as a barn after the Civil Wars. A 1930s mansion now adjoins the hall and both buildings are administered by English Heritage. Eltham Palace was central to its local community as well as to the aristocratic levels of international society. While the court was at Eltham the palace was the centre of administration for the whole country as far as that part of the royal government which travelled round the country with the monarch was concerned. During such visits a great many people came to Eltham on official and personal business, the largest numbers arriving at Easter when alms were distributed to the poor. Surviving records are numerous and document many aspects of the royal manor and the parish, including sports and ceremonies and the activities of the home farm. The book traces the palace from its medieval and Tudor beginnings, with court visits, the arrivals of foreign royalty and ambassadors, and the tournaments and festivities, through the unfortunate destruction of many of its royal buildings in the 17th century, up to Eltham Palace's state and purpose today. Containing many details concerning the palace and people of Eltham which do not appear in earlier descriptions of its history, this vivid and in-depth work will be of great interest to local and tourists, as well as those interested in such a rich royal heritage and architectural history.

Kitchen & Bath Sustainable Design provides a handbook to designing these rooms for sustainability, without sacrificing comfort or livability. With comprehensive guidance on approaching these rooms sustainably, readers will: * Communicate better with builders, clients, and potential clients * Understand technical considerations, and the criteria that make a design "green" * Conduct a full design analysis, including life cycle costing and efficiency * Learn the ratings systems and standards in play in the green kitchen and bath The biggest elements of sustainable interior design energy efficiency, water use, and materials selection are all major players in the kitchen and bath. Clients are increasingly demanding attention to sustainability issues, and designers must be up to date on the latest guidelines, best practices, and technology. Kitchen & Bath Sustainable Design is the complete technical and practical guide to green design for the kitchen and bath professional.

Stefanos Sinos
R1,772 Discovery Miles 17 720 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book tells the fascinating history of the Byzantine Palace of Mistras, erected in the mid-13th century and later expanded to become the seat of the Byzantine governors. From the mid-14th century it was the seat of the Despots of Mistras, and the administrative centre around which commerce and culture flourished during the final phase of the Byzantine Empire. The palace reached its final form with the extensions made at the beginning of the 15th century; it was abandoned in the 18th century and decayed into a three-storey ruin until our times. These ruins, which are described in detail, were investigated, and documented in an extensive photographic archive, leading to a plan for the Palace's restoration according to its original form. The organisation of the restoration work, the techniques employed and the structural details of the building are discussed here in great detail, revealing the Palace in its restored form. English language edition. More than 900 illustrations, many in colour.

Medieval London Houses (Paperback, New ed): John Schofield Medieval London Houses (Paperback, New ed)
John Schofield
R732 Discovery Miles 7 320 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

A comprehensive study of domestic buildings in London from about 1200 to the Great Fire in 1666. John Schofield describes houses and such related buildings as almshouses, taverns, inns, shops and livery company halls, drawing on evidence from surviving buildings, archaeological excavations, documents, panoramas, drawn surveys and plans, contemporary descriptions, and later engravings and photographs. Schofield presents an overview of the topography of the medieval city, reconstructing its streets, defences, many religious houses and fine civic buildings. He then provides details about the mediaeval and Tudor London house: its plan, individual rooms and spaces and their functions, the roofs, floors and windows, the materials of construction and decoration, and the internal fittings and furniture. Throughout the text he discusses what this evidence tells us about the special restrictions or pleasures of living in the capital; how certain innovations of plan and construction first occurred in London before spreading to other towns; and how notions of privacy developed. The text is illustrated and accompanied by a selective gazetteer of 201 sites in the City of London and its immediate

The Affordable City - Strategies for Putting Housing Within Reach (and Keeping It There) (Paperback): Shane Phillips The Affordable City - Strategies for Putting Housing Within Reach (and Keeping It There) (Paperback)
Shane Phillips
R1,183 R761 Discovery Miles 7 610 Save R422 (36%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

From Los Angeles to Boston and Chicago to Miami, US cities are struggling to address the twin crises of high housing costs and household instability. In most cities, debates over the appropriate course of action have been defined by two poles: building more housing or enacting stronger tenant protections. These options are often treated as mutually exclusive, with support for one implying opposition to the other. Shane Phillips takes on this tension in The Affordable City, arguing that effectively addressing the housing crisis requires that cities support both tenant protections and housing abundance. To improve affordability, cities must build new homes that serve all people and accommodate the needs of a growing population and changing demographics. At the same time, they must also protect existing residents from harm and help them share in the benefits of investment in their communities. Phillips explains that the solution to America's housing crisis comes down to three priorities that he calls the Three S's: Supply, Stability, and Subsidy. Supply is about having enough homes for everyone. Stability is about recognizing and upholding the dignity of housing, especially related to tenant protections and rental housing preservation. Subsidy is about ensuring that everyone enjoys the benefits of abundant housing and stable, accessible communities. Far from being in conflict, these three goals can and should be mutually reinforcing, both technically and politically. In The Affordable City, Phillips offers 55 policy recommendations, beginning with a set of principles and general recommendations that should apply to all housing policy. These are followed by sections covering the Three S's of Supply, Stability, and Subsidy, with a moral and economic case for why each is essential and recommendations for making them work together. Phillips ends with a policy blueprint and implementation plan for each policy, including whether it should be pursued as an immediate, medium-term, or long-term priority. To address the housing crisis, we need everyone in the fight. The Affordable City is an essential tool for professional city planners, policymakers, public officials, and advocates working to improve affordability and increase community resilience through local action.

For the past decade, the Los Angeles architect Michael Maltzan has designed multiunit housing in a city known for its proliferation of single-family residences. Working with the Skid Row Housing Trust, these projects advance new forms of supportive housing that address the services and infrastructures needed for their particular populations of inhabitants. For Maltzan, housing manifests an incredibly complex set of spatial problems-social, economic, political, typological, aesthetic, and urban-that recast architecture's role in framing the social relationships and individual challenges of everyday urban life. Social Transparency includes a recent lecture by Maltzan at Columbia University's Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, as well as reflections from fellow practitioners on this sustained engagement with housing and the city.

Text in English & German. In the area along the Weser, there was a great deal of building activity between the Reformation and the Thirty Years War which was helped along by economic prosperity. Little affected later by war or modernisation, high quality Renaissance castles, aristocratic estates, town halls and civic architecture have survived here in exceptional density. This facet of Central European Renaissance architecture started to be appreciated in the early 20th century. This led to the concept of the Weser Renaissance, oriented above all towards formal and regional history, and still popular today, like a kind of brand. The present volume offers a representative selection of the region's castles and palaces for the first time, dealing with both princely residences and seats of the nobility. Architecture and court culture are placed in a European context that goes beyond older approaches based on the stylistic history and shows that forms demonstrating princely prestige have qualities in common well outside the region. Michael Bischoff's introductory text provides an overview of Renaissance architecture in the Weser area. Uwe Albrecht and Julian Jachmann explain the terminology and function of princely architecture. Heiner Borggrefe analyses early Renaissance architectural ornamentation, G Ulrich Grossmann covers the topic after the mid-16th century. Thomas Fusenig writes on the arts and sciences at the courts. Rolf Schoenlau discusses aspects of building materials in terms of economic history. Hillert Ibbeken deals with the sandstone that is most frequently used from a geological point of view. The descriptive catalogue is by Katja Schoene and Michael Bischoff.

They are, however, all developed on the basis of the classical toolkit that is part of every architect's training and then of their professional work. It is still the idea that makes all the difference and that serves as a basis for a draft in the following step. Text in English and German.
