Rural China: Economic and Social Change in the Late Twentieth Century - Economic and Social Change in the Late Twentieth... Rural China: Economic and Social Change in the Late Twentieth Century - Economic and Social Change in the Late Twentieth Century (Hardcover, illustrated edition)
Jie Fan, Thomas Heberer, Wolfgang Taubmann
R4,096 Discovery Miles 40 960 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book reports the findings of two field studies conducted between 1993 and 2001 in seven townships and six provinces in China. The authors describe the process of rural urbanization and its related economic, social, and political changes by focusing mainly on the zhen (town), in addition to administrative offices and companies involved in the local economy, and village committees. The authors show that the social changes resulting from China's economic reforms are occurring mainly from below, and that this process is also resulting in a weakening of the economic and political dominance of the central government. Other changes discussed in this study include the development of new ownership structures and the increasing dominance of the private sector; a shift in the functions of administrative offices as the bureaucracy becomes increasingly business oriented; the rise of a new local elite; a rebirth of traditional social structures (clans, local associations); and the emergence of new interest groups and institutions to represent their needs.

Landscapes of Change - Rural Evolutions in Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages (Hardcover, New Ed): Neil Christie Landscapes of Change - Rural Evolutions in Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages (Hardcover, New Ed)
Neil Christie
R4,655 Discovery Miles 46 550 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Only in recent years has archaeology begun to examine in a coherent manner the transformation of the landscape from classical through to medieval times. In Landscapes of Change, leading scholars in the archaeology of the late antique and early medieval periods address the key results and directions of Roman rural fieldwork. In so doing, they highlight problems of analysis and interpretation whilst also identifying the variety of transformations that rural Europe experienced during and following the decline of Roman hegemony. Whilst documents and standing buildings predominate in the urban context to provide a coherent and tangible guide to the evolving urban form and its society since Roman times, the countryside in many ages remains rather shadowy - a context for the cultivation, gathering and movement of food and other resources, inhabited by farmers, villagers and miners. Whilst the Roman period is adequately served through occasional extant remains and through the survey and excavation of villas and farmsteads, as well as the writings of agronomists, the medieval one is generally well marked by the presence of still extant villages across Europe, often dependent on castles and manors which symbolise the so-called 'feudal' centuries. But the intervening period, the fourth to tenth centuries, is that with the least documentation and with the fewest survivals. What happened to the settlement units that made up the Roman rural world? When and why do new settlement forms emerge? Landscapes of Change is essential reading for anyone wanting an up-to-date summary of the results of archaeological and historical investigations into the changing countryside of the late Roman, late antique and early medieval world, between the fourth and tenth centuries AD. It questions numerous aspects of change and continuity, assessing the levels of impact of military and economic decay, the spread and influence of Christianity, and the role of Germanic, Slav and Arab settlements in disrupting and redefining the ancient rural landscapes.

Geographies of Rural Cultures and Societies (Hardcover, New Ed): Lewis Holloway Geographies of Rural Cultures and Societies (Hardcover, New Ed)
Lewis Holloway; Moya Kneafsey
R4,091 Discovery Miles 40 910 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The last decade or so has witnessed a flourishing of research in rural geography; in particular, approaches which have developed socio-cultural perspectives on rural issues. This book brings together well-established and newer researchers to examine the position of rural social and cultural geography at the beginning of the 21st century and to suggest new research agendas. It offers critical evaluations of theoretical positions and advances, introduces new conceptual and methodological tools and reports on recent empirical work on a variety of topical issues in a number of countries. With diverse theoretical and empirical content, the book makes a valuable contribution to the development of research into changing social and cultural geographies of rurality in 'developed' or 'Western' countries.

Contesting Africa's New Green Revolution - Biotechnology and Philanthrocapitalist Development in Ghana (Paperback):... Contesting Africa's New Green Revolution - Biotechnology and Philanthrocapitalist Development in Ghana (Paperback)
Jacqueline A. Ignatova
R1,002 Discovery Miles 10 020 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Genetically modified crops have become a key element of development strategies across the Global South, despite remaining deeply controversial. Proponents hail them as an example of 'pro-poor' innovation, while critics regard them as a threat to food sovereignty and the environment. The promotion of biotechnology is an integral part of 'new Green Revolution for Africa' interventions and is also intimately linked to the rise of 'philanthrocapitalism,' which advances business solutions to address the problem of poverty. Through interviews with farmers, policymakers and agricultural scientists, Jacqueline Ignatova shows how efforts to transform the seed sector in northern Ghana - one of the key laboratories of this 'new Green Revolution' - may serve to exacerbate the inequality it was notionally intended to address. But she also argues that its effects in Ghana have been far more complex than either side of the debate has acknowledged, with local farmers proving adept at blending traditional and modern agricultural methods that subvert the interests of global agribusiness.

The New Agrarian Mind - The Movement Toward Decentralist Thought in Twentieth-Century America (Paperback, New edition): Allan C... The New Agrarian Mind - The Movement Toward Decentralist Thought in Twentieth-Century America (Paperback, New edition)
Allan C Carlson
R1,388 Discovery Miles 13 880 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The self-sufficiency and regional outlook of farm life characterized the United States until the Civil War period. With the triumph of the industrial North over the rural South, the expansion of urbanism, and the closing of the frontier, the agrarian sector became an economic and cultural minority. The social benefits of rural life--a sense of independence, commitment to democracy, an abundance of children, stable community life--were threatened. This volume examines the rise of a distinctive agrarian intellectual movement to combat these trends.

"The New Agrarian Mind," now in paperback, synthesizes the thought of twentieth-century agrarian writers. It weaves together discussions of major representative figures, such as Liberty Hyde Bailey, Carle Zimmerman, and Wendell Berry, with myth-shattering analyses of the movement's cultural diversity, intellectual influence, and ideological complexity. Collectively labeled the New Agrarians to distinguish them from the simpler Jeffersonianism of the nineteenth century, they shared a coherent set of goals that were at once socially conservative and economically radical.

Minding Spirituality (Hardcover, New): Randall Lehmann Sorenson Minding Spirituality (Hardcover, New)
Randall Lehmann Sorenson
R5,094 Discovery Miles 50 940 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In Minding Spirituality, Randall Sorenson, a clinical psychoanalyst, "invites us to take an interest in our patients' spirituality that is respectful but not diffident, curious but not reductionistic, welcoming but not indoctrinating." Out of this invitation emerges a fascinating and broadening investigation of how contemporary psychoanalysis can "mind" spirituality in the threefold sense of being bothered by it, of attending to it, and of cultivating it. Both the questions Sorenson asks, and the answers he begins to formulate, reflect progressive changes in the psychoanalytic understanding of spirituality. Sorenson begins by quantitatively analyzing 75 years of journal literature and documenting how psychoanalytic approaches to religious and spiritual experiences have evolved far beyond the "wholesale pathologizing of religion" prevalent during Freud's lifetime. Then, in successive chapters, he explores and illustrates the kind of clinical technique appropriate to the modern treatment of religious issues. And the issue of technique is consequential in more than one way -- Sorenson presents evidence that how analysts work clinically has a greater impact on their patients' spirituality than the patients' own parents have. Sorenson brings an array of disciplinary perspectives to bear in examining the multiple relationships among psychoanalysis, religion, and spirituality. Empirical analysis, psychoanalytic history, sociology of religion, comparative theory, and sustained clinical interpretation all enter into his effort to open a dialogue that is clinically relevant. Turning traditional critiques of psychoanalytic training on their head, he argues that psychoanalytic education has much to learn from models of contemporary theological education. Beautifully crafted and engagingly written, Minding Spirituality not only invites interdisciplinary dialogue but, via Sorenson's wide-ranging and passionately open-minded scholarship, exemplifies it.

In the Land of Orpheus - Rural Livelihoods and Nature Conservation in Postsocialist Bulgaria (Hardcover, New): Barbara A... In the Land of Orpheus - Rural Livelihoods and Nature Conservation in Postsocialist Bulgaria (Hardcover, New)
Barbara A Cellarius
R1,192 Discovery Miles 11 920 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"In the Land of Orpheus" provides a rich ethnographic description of village life and conservation efforts in an ecologically important region of one of the most biologically diverse countries in Europe. Barbara Cellarius describes natural resource use and economic survival strategies in a rural Rhodope Mountain village and the ways in which the lives of residents of a rural community are affected by outside forces, particularly the economic and political uncertainties that have plagued Bulgaria since the collapse of communism. She examines larger forces, including environmental nongovernmental organizations, interested in linking global conservation priorities with local communities.

Prairie Town - Redefining Rural Life in the Age of Globalization (Paperback, New): Jacqueline Edmondson Prairie Town - Redefining Rural Life in the Age of Globalization (Paperback, New)
Jacqueline Edmondson
R1,131 Discovery Miles 11 310 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Prairie Town: Redefining Rural Life in the Age of Globalization describes the contemporary rural condition and efforts to sustain rural life in one small Minnesota community at the turn of the 21st century. Like many other agricultural based towns, Prairie Town struggled for survival within the context of the on-going farm crisis, NAFTA, neoliberal agricultural policies, and growing agribusiness that negatively impacted many farmers throughout the world. The effects of globalization, the displacement of rural workers to urban areas, and the deterioration of rural life were a widespread phenomenon. In spite of these complex issues, Prairie Town worked to define a new rural- life, one which entailed a new rural literacy-a new way of reading rural life-that changed the way rural life, work, and education were realized. Prairie Town's story offers us hope as we learn that neoliberalism is not inevitable, nor is the demise of rural America. From this community, we learn that not everything can be bought and sold, and disidentification with dominant societal structures is possible within a participatory democratic society. New cultural models can be constructed that enable individuals in Prairie Town and elsewhere to actively work to construct ways of being that are consistent with their values and hopes for how they might live together.

The Death of Rural England - A Social History of the Countryside Since 1900 (Paperback, New): Alun Howkins The Death of Rural England - A Social History of the Countryside Since 1900 (Paperback, New)
Alun Howkins
R1,217 Discovery Miles 12 170 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In the age of material crises of rural areas, worries about environmental damage and factory farming, urban people's attitudes to the countryside have changed. Rural areas are still seen as places to roam and to enjoy, yet modern agriculture also causes anxities about the land and its products.
Alun Howkins's panoramic survey is a social history of rural England and Wales in the twentieth century. He examines the impact of the First World War, the role of agriculture throughout the century, and the expectations of the countryside that modern urban people harbour. Howkins analyses the role of rural England as a place for work as well as leisure, and the problems caused by these often conflicting roles. This researched overview will be welcomed by anyone interested in agricultural and social history, historical geographers, and all those interested in contemporary rural affairs.

In Gotham's Shadow - Globalization and Community Change in Central New York (Paperback): Alexander R. Thomas In Gotham's Shadow - Globalization and Community Change in Central New York (Paperback)
Alexander R. Thomas
R838 R731 Discovery Miles 7 310 Save R107 (13%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In what may be the first explicitly comparative study of the effects of globalization on metropolitan and rural communities, In Gotham's Shadow examines how three central New York communities struggled over the last half century to survive in a global economy that seems to have forgotten them. Utica, formerly a city of one hundred thousand, experienced the same trends of suburbanization, deindustrialization, and urban renewal as nearly every American city, with the same mixed results. In Cooperstown and Hartwick, two small villages forty miles south of Utica, the same trends were at work, though with different outcomes. Hartwick may be seen as an example of how small towns have lost their core, while Cooperstown may be seen as an example of how a small town can survive by transforming itself into a tourist destination. Thomas provides extensive historical background mixed with newspaper excerpts and lively interviews that add a human dimension to the transformations these communities have experienced.

The Transformation of Rural China (Hardcover): Jonathan Unger The Transformation of Rural China (Hardcover)
Jonathan Unger
R4,083 Discovery Miles 40 830 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

During the past quarter century Jonathan Unger has interviewed farmers and rural officials from various parts of China in order to track the extraordinary changes that have swept the countryside from the Maoist era through the Deng era to the present day. A leading specialist on rural China, Professor Unger presents a vivid picture of life in rural areas during the Maoist revolution, and then after the post-Mao disbandment of the collectives. This is a story of unexpected continuities amidst enormous change. Unger describes how rural administrations retain Mao-era characteristics - despite the major shifts that have occurred in the economic and social hierarchies of villages as collectivization and "class struggle" gave way to the slogan "to get rich is glorious." A chapter explores the private entrepreneurship that has blossomed in the prosperous parts of the countryside. Another focuses on the tensions and exploitation that have arisen as vast numbers of migrant laborers from poor districts have poured into richer ones. Another, based on five months of travel by jeep into impoverished villages in the interior, describes the dilemmas of under-development still faced by many tens of millions of farmers, and the ways in which government policies have inadvertently hurt their livelihoods.

Welfare Reform in Rural Places - Comparative Perspectives (Hardcover): Paul Milbourne, Terry Marsden Welfare Reform in Rural Places - Comparative Perspectives (Hardcover)
Paul Milbourne, Terry Marsden; Series edited by Paul Milbourne
R3,350 Discovery Miles 33 500 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Research on welfare has tended to focus on the national scale with relatively little attention given to the differential impacts of welfare restructuring in rural places and the difficulties faced by disadvantaged groups with limited provision of welfare services in many rural areas. This book seeks to significantly extend previous research work on the rural impacts of national welfare reform and position it in a broader context. "International Perspectives on Rural Welfare" provides a critical, comprehensive and comparative account of the rural dimensions of welfare in a number of developed countries. The book brings together recent research from Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand to provide the seminal international book on rural welfare. As well as being international in its outlook, it provides an inter-disciplinary focus on rural welfare by including contributors from sociology, human geography, social policy and social anthropology. The definition of welfare used within the book is broad, encompassing overarching welfare and workfare agendas, as well as more specific welfare policy areas such as anti-poverty, health, housing, social security, social work and education.

The Rationality of Rural Life - Economic and Cultural Change in Tuscany (Hardcover): Jeff Pratt The Rationality of Rural Life - Economic and Cultural Change in Tuscany (Hardcover)
Jeff Pratt
R4,077 Discovery Miles 40 770 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Since the 1950s, the rural districts of central Italy have undergone a series of significant transformations. After World War II the area was still dominated by a share-cropping system, the mezzadria, an integrated rural production system which satisfied most of the subsistence needs of the rural community. In 1950 the mezzadria was at the centre of a political struggle which resulted in these districts losing half of their population and three quarters of their farmers in a rural exodus. The collapse of the mezzadria created major fractures in rural society. "Agriculture" emerged in the sense that farms began to concentrate exclusively on field production and in the process they became increasingly dependent on industry and subservient to it. This monograph analyzes these developments in detail and at the same time places them in a wider context, exploring the strengths and weaknesses of theoretical writings on modern agriculture.

Sex/Gender and Self-Determination - Policy Developments in Law, Health and Pedagogical Contexts (Hardcover): Zowie Davy Sex/Gender and Self-Determination - Policy Developments in Law, Health and Pedagogical Contexts (Hardcover)

Davy shows how legal, medical and pedagogical policy developments are interconnected, while unique interviews with parents of sex/gender expansive children reveal how policy affects and is affected by experiences and advocacy. Written by an internationally renowned scholar, this book sparks new debate on the challenges and opportunities surrounding sex/gender self-determination.

Peasants Without the Party - Grass-roots Movements in Twentieth-Century China (Paperback, New Ed): Lucien Bianco Peasants Without the Party - Grass-roots Movements in Twentieth-Century China (Paperback, New Ed)
Lucien Bianco
R1,227 Discovery Miles 12 270 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Exploring one of the most dynamic and contested regions of the world, this series includes works on political, economic, cultural, and social changes in modern and contemporary Asia and the Pacific.

The leading specialist on China's twentieth century peasant resistance reexamines, in bold and original ways, the question: Was the Chinese peasantry a revolutionary force? Where most scholarly attention has focused on Communist-led peasant movements, Bianco's story is one of peasant thought and action largely unmediated by modern political parties. This volume pays particular attention to the first half of the twentieth century when peasant-based conflict, ranging from tax and food protests to secret society conflicts, opium struggles, inter-communal conflicts, and tenant protests over rent, was central to nationwide revolutionary processes.

Utopian England - Community Experiments 1900-1945 (Paperback): Dennis Hardy Utopian England - Community Experiments 1900-1945 (Paperback)
Dennis Hardy
R1,606 Discovery Miles 16 060 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

England in the early part of the twentieth century was rich in utopian ventures - diverse and intriguing in their scope and aims. Two world wars, an economic depression, and the emergence of fascist states in Europe were all a spur to idealists to seek new limits - to escape from the here and now, and to create sanctuaries for new and better lives.
Dennis Hardy explores this fascinating history of utopian ideals, the lives of those who pursued them, and the utopian communities they created.
Some communities were fired by a long tradition of land movements, others by thoughts of more humane ways of building towns. In turn there were experiments devoted to the arts; to the promotion of religious doctrine; and to a variety of political causes. And some were just 'places of the imagination'.
This book is about just one episode in the perennial search for perfection, but what is revealed has lessons that extend well beyond a particular time and place. So long as there are failings in society, so long as rationality is not enough, there will continue to be a place for thinking the impossible, for going in search of utopia.

Fear of Crime Among the Elderly - A Multi-Method Study of the Small Town Experience (Hardcover): Mary Dale Craig Fear of Crime Among the Elderly - A Multi-Method Study of the Small Town Experience (Hardcover)
Mary Dale Craig
R3,676 R2,878 Discovery Miles 28 780 Save R798 (22%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This multimethod study of crime and the elderly in a small-town setting approaches the related issues from varied perspectives and ultimately presents a different picture of fear of crime among the elderly than that which dominates the current literature. Three features contribute to this book's uniqueness. The first is a departure from the urban view; the second is an emphasis on phenomenology; and the third is multimethodology. With an emphasis on qualitative research, this study allows the elderly and other key informants to present their own portrait relative to crime..a portrait that is far more contextually varied and far less dominated by fear and vulnerability than is commonly assumed.
