Initially marketed as a life-saving advancement, flame retardants
are now mired in controversy. Some argue that data show the
chemicals are unsafe while others continue to support their use.
The tactics of each side have far-reaching consequences for how we
interpret new scientific discoveries. An experienced environmental
sociologist, Alissa Cordner conducts more than a hundred interviews
with activists, scientists, regulators, and industry professionals
to isolate the social, scientific, economic, and political forces
influencing environmental health policy today. Introducing
"strategic science translation," she describes how stakeholders use
scientific evidence to support nonscientific goals and construct
"conceptual risk formulas" to shape risk assessment and the
interpretation of empirical evidence. A revelatory text for
public-health advocates, Toxic Safety demonstrates that while all
parties interested in health issues use science to support their
claims, they do not compete on a level playing field and even good
intentions can have deleterious effects.
Be prepared for the worst case scenario with t this field-tested
guide to surviving a nuclear attack, written by a revered civil
defense expert. This edition of Cresson H. Kearny's iconic Nuclear
War Survival Skills (originally published in 1979 and updated by
Kearny himself in 1987 and again in 2001), offers expert advice for
ensuring your family's safety should the worst come to pass.
Chock-full of practical instructions and preventative measures,
Nuclear War Survival Skills is based on years of meticulous
scientific research conducted by Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
Featuring a new introduction by ex-Navy SEAL and New York Times
bestselling author Don Mann, this book also includes Instructions
for six different fallout shelters Food and water Myths and facts
about the dangers of nuclear weapons Tips for maintaining an
adequate food and water supply Shelter sanitation and preventive
medicine Surviving without doctors A foreword by "the father of the
hydrogen bomb," physicist Dr. Edward Teller, An "About the Author"
note by Eugene P. Wigner, physicist and Nobel Laureate. Written at
a time when global tensions were at their peak, Nuclear War
Survival Skills remains relevant in the dangerous age in which we
now live.
The Chemical Scythe is the first book in a projected series to be
published by Plenum Press in association with the International
Disaster Institute. The aim of the series, Disaster Research in
Practice, is to provide scientific and readable accounts on the
most urgent areas of disaster research. It is fitting, therefore,
that Dr. Hay's investigation into the nature and effects of dioxins
heralds the new series. The problem of chemical hazards is one that
we will have to learn to live with in future decades. Dr. Hay's
book is an authoritative account of the chemistry and proven and
potential effects of dioxins, and of the impli cations for safety
planning. He concludes with a cautious, yet optimistic note-that
indeed we can learn to live with such hazards, providing that we
are prepared to understand and plan for the unexpected. The
accident at Seveso in 1976 alerted the world to an imperfectly un
derstood but immensely alarming environmental hazard. Public debate
and argument as to the implications of dioxins and, indeed, the use
of herbicides as aggressive weapons in Vietnam, rage on. And yet it
is only through the painstaking research exemplified in this book
that it will eventually be pos sible to promote the vital
accountability on the part of industrialists and governments."
The result of extensive research, including an analysis of over 140
active shooter/killer incidents, Krav Maga Extreme Survival
provides an apolitical view of personal safety--concentrating on
practical methods to survive violent situations. In his third book,
Gershon Ben Keren explains how Krav Maga techniques can be used to
survive some of the most relevant, extreme situations including
carjackings, home invasions and attempted mass killings. The book
also details predator profiling methods to aid in the prediction,
prevention and avoidance of violence. Demonstrating effective
solutions that have been tried and tested in both the real world
and through reconstructions of real-life events, each section of
Krav Maga Extreme Survival presents detailed instructions alongside
a series of photographs that show how to defend yourself and others
against: Attacks in workplaces, homes and public places Instances
of domestic violence including violent and abusive relationships
Assailants armed with knives, handguns, long barrel firearms,
explosives, and improvised weapons Attacks in cars and other
confined and restricted spaces Vehicular rammings Unarmed attackers
One-on-one assaults and attacks targeting a group Emphasizing a
dynamic assessment of your environment, combined with a rapid
response, Krav Maga Extreme Survival teaches practitioners to
neutralize an assailant's advantage early, before the situation
escalates.
A lively, deeply reported tour of the science and strategies
helping athletes like Tom Brady, Serena Williams, Carli Lloyd, and
LeBron James redefine the notion of "peak age." Season after
season, today's sports superstars seem to defy the limits of
physical aging that inevitably sideline their competitors. How much
of the difference is genetic destiny and how much can be attributed
to better training, medicine, and technology? Is athletic longevity
a skill that can be taught or a mental discipline that can be
mastered? Can career-ending injuries be predicted and avoided?
Journalist Jeff Bercovici spent extensive time with professional
and Olympic athletes, coaches, and doctors to find the answers to
these questions. His quest led him to training camps, tournaments,
hospitals, antiaging clinics, and Silicon Valley startups, where he
tried cutting-edge treatments and technologies firsthand and
investigated the realities behind health fads like alkaline diets,
high-intensity interval training, and cryotherapy. Through
fascinating profiles and first-person anecdotes, Bercovici
illuminates the science and strategies extending the careers of
elite older athletes, uncovers the latest advances in fields from
nutrition to brain science to virtual reality, and offers
empowering insights about how the rest of us can find peak
performance at any age.
The United States Department of Justice reports that one million
violent crimes occur in the workplace annually, and case law and
Occupational Safety and Health Act regulations hold employers
liable. This book brings together the professional expertise,
valuable insights, and practical advice that safety and health
professionals need to identify why workplace violence occurs and
how to control it. The first of its kind to examine workplace
violence from a safety and health professional's perspective,
Violence in the Workplace contains the author's extensive medical
and epidemiological knowledge of the subject as well as
contributions from a wide variety of professionals in the fields of
law, medicine, security, training, psychiatry, public health, and
risk management.
Soil is the main source of continuous radiation exposure to humans.
It also acts as a medium of migration for transfer of radionuclides
to the biological systems and hence, it is the basic indicator of
radiological contamination in the environment. In this new book,
the authors present current research in the study of the sources,
impacts and reduction strategies to radiation exposure. Topics
discussed include radiation exposure and protection in conventional
paediatric radiology of the thorax; natural and man-made
radionuclides in the soil; the current state of terrestrial
ecosystems in the Eastern Ural radioactive trace; pharmaceuticals
photochemical reactions and radiation exposure in pregnancy and in
medical imaging.
No one in history has ever amassed such a comprehensive
encyclopedia on this collective body of hand, stick, knife and gun
CQC combatives, all a forged hybrid from military, police, martial
arts and medical, historical and psychological disciplines.
You will need more than just food and water when the grid goes
down. Many people know what they need to survive a doomsday
scenario. They stock high-calorie foods and clean water, they find
their own sources of power and heat, and they prepare to defend
themselves, if need be. With all they have stored, they have the
ability to survive for days, weeks, even months. You may think you
have finished preparing once you have accumulated these basic
necessities, but there is always more that can be done. In The
Pocket Guide to Prepping Supplies, Patty Hahne offers up two
hundred and thirty-five oft-forgotten items that may prove to be
indispensable for surviving the apocalypse should it happen. From
the mundane, like quality shelving and needle and thread, to more
specialized tools, such as a closet auger and jumper cables, Hahne
describes how each one can prove to be a vital addition to the
prepper's cache. You may be surprised to see what common household
items can do when used creatively, and Hahne is here to help
inspire you. Presented in a compact design, The Pocket Guide to
Prepping Supplies is an important addition to any prepper's book
collection, one that can be carried in a purse or pocket, stored in
the car, or slipped into that carefully prepared bug-out bag.
As we age, our sense of balance and our vision, hearing, and
cognition become less sharp. Aging-related changes greatly increase
our risk of injury. In Living Safely, Aging Well, nationally
recognized safety expert Dorothy A. Drago spells out how to prevent
injury while cooking, gardening, sleeping, driving - and just
walking around the house. In the first part of the book, Drago
describes the causes of injuries by type-falls, burns, poisoning,
and asphyxia - and explains how to decrease the risk of each. She
then explores the home environment room by room, pointing out
potential hazards and explaining how to avoid them, for example, by
installing night lights, eliminating glass coffee tables, and using
baby monitors. Lively line drawings make it easy for readers to
visualize risks and implement prevention techniques. Living Safely,
Aging Well pays special attention to hazards encountered by people
with Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia. A chapter
devoted to health literacy helps people and caregivers make the
best use of the medical care system and a chapter on driving helps
evaluate when it is no longer safe to be behind the wheel.

International travel is rewarding and fun, but sometimes it exacts
a price. Activities we take for granted—eating, bathing, and
going to the toilet—can range from challenging to risky in
unfamiliar territory. In How to Shit Around the World, Dr. Jane
Wilson-Howarth takes a sympathetic and funny approach to the most
basic human activity, interweaving hilarious anecdotes from fellow
travelers with sensible tips and techniques. More than just a
how-to, this book inspires the traveler to be adventurous in
dealing with foreign toilets, and to heed the fascinating cultural
lessons to be learned from the simple act of using the bathroom.
radiochemische Grundpraktikum" abgelOst hatte. Gegenuber dem
bisherigen Praktikumsbuch enthiilt diese Neufassung einige
wesentliche Anderungen. Das betrifft neben einer strafferen
Gliederung vor allem die Aufnahme einiger neuer Abschnitte, wie z.
B. Verfahren zur Verarbeitung von De- tektorsignalen, sonstige
Detektoren, elektrochemische Verfahren, Autoradiographie. Einige
