Memoirs of a much-loved teacher and legendary headmaster of Pretoria Boys High. Bill Schroder is the stuff teaching legends are made of. He was strict, yet kind; firm and consistent, yet creative and playful when needed. He knew the magical mix of discipline and care needed to ensure the loyalty of his students. In this warm-hearted, inspiring and often funny memoir, Schroder looks back on four decades as an English and Latin teacher and, later, headmaster, including 19 years at Pretoria Boys High. His holistic approach to teaching earned him the respect of both teachers and students. Teaching is not only about conveying knowledge, he believed, but also about looking after the emotional needs of students. For Schroder, the institution was never more important than the individual – he always put his students first. As a headmaster he became known for doing things his own way. He gave students a voice where others wanted to silence them, he found creative ways to turn problem schools around and never allowed departmental admin to get in the way of teaching. In the early 1990s when schools were opened to all races, Pretoria Boys High under him played a leading role in transforming their school. In his retirement he also served as a consultant and a mentor to a school in a Pretoria township. Here is a teacher who left an indelible mark on thousands of pupils from Cape Town to Pretoria.

The Children's Music Studio is the first book that provides music teachers, parents and early childhood educators a wealth of materials and a clear roadmap for applying Reggio Emilia principles and practices to preschool and early childhood music education. Drawing on Professor Hanna's extensive experience researching and teaching in Reggio- inspired music classrooms, this pioneering book provides a comprehensive and in-depth manual for designing music ateliers-hands-on studios that capture the imagination and creativity of children. Informed by the cutting edge research on music learning, this practical guide includes detailed studio plans, examples of Reggio-inspired music studio explorations and documentation of children's work in music studios. In this book you will: - Learn why the Reggio approach is considered one of the best educational approaches in the world. - Discover how children can naturally learn music through the studio approach, drawing on the poetic languages and the power of collaborative environments. - See detailed examples and documentation of project-based studio learning. - Understand how music learning increases overall artistic and academic literacy across the curriculum. - Learn how to develop customized projects for your classroom that will teach children to think and communicate fluently through music and sound. Early childhood and elementary music teachers will find this book especially useful as it provides innovative ideas for Reggio-inspired music teaching and learning techniques that can be integrated into the existing curriculum. Music teachers will learn how to balance multiple roles of researcher, professional artist and co-learner for delivering high quality musical experiences using the Reggio-inspired studio approach. Detailed examples and templates show how teachers can design music studios, along with clear instructions for observing and documenting children's musical learning. The Children's Music Studio also provides a unique theoretical framework for using music in the studio based on music materials, musical modalities and processes, which align with the Common Core Arts Standards.

Dawn ot the DAW tells the story of how the dividing line between the traditional roles of musicians and recording studio personnel (producers, recording engineers, mixing engineers, technicians, etc.) has eroded throughout the latter half of the twentieth century to the present. Whereas those equally adept in music and technology such as Raymond Scott and Les Paul were exceptions to their eras, the millennial music maker is ensconced in a world in which the symbiosis of music and technology is commonplace. As audio production skills such as recording, editing, and mixing are increasingly co-opted by musicians teaching themselves in their do-it-yourself (DIY) recording studios, conventions of how music production is taught and practiced are remixed to reflect this reality. Dawn ot the DAW first examines DIY recording practices within the context of recording history from the late nineteenth century to the present. Second, Dawn ot the DAW discusses the concept of "the studio as musical instrument" and the role of the producer, detailing how these constructs have evolved throughout the history of recorded music in tandem. Third, Dawn ot the DAW details current practices of DIY recording-how recording technologies are incorporated into music making, and how they are learned by DIY studio users in the musically-chic borough of Brooklyn. Finally, Dawn ot the DAW examines the broader trends heard throughout, summarizing the different models of learning and approaches to music making. Dawn ot the DAW concludes by discussing the ramifications of these new directions for the field of music education.

How do some high schools produce graduates that consistently achieve at high levels? Would you believe there's a set of proven strategies that could help you deliver similar impressive results and better prepare students for the world after high school? High schools in the United States face a startling reality: many graduates are unprepared for success in postsecondary studies or for high-demand, well-paying jobs in a rapidly changing economy. Although this situation is alarming, the high schools that have embraced new ways of learning show us what is possible. Drawing from his experience with the High Schools That Work initiative, Gene Bottoms offers educators a path forward by urging them to pursue bold goals and outlining bold actions for achieving those goals. His vision is clear: replace the traditional model of secondary education with one that engages students in a rigorous curriculum that combines a solid academic core with intellectually demanding career pathway courses. The notion that nearly all students can achieve at high levels is borne out by numerous examples of high schools-including those with traditionally underperforming student populations-that have used key strategies to help all students realize their potential. Bottoms explains the root causes of the current shortcomings in high school education and then specifies critical components of successful transformation: Shared leadership; Powerful assignments-especially in math, literacy, and career/technical education-planned and executed by academic and career pathway teachers working together; Strengthened connections between middle school and high school; A redesigned senior year; and Comprehensive counseling and advisory programs. Provocative and persuasive in its sense of urgency, Tomorrow's High School offers proven and practical solutions to finally make high schools a rich and rewarding experience for all students, whatever their future college and career goals may be. This book is a copublication of ASCD and SREB. It includes access to nine downloadable appendixes.
