Empire and Sexuality (Paperback, New Ed): Ronald Hyam Empire and Sexuality (Paperback, New Ed)
Ronald Hyam
R632 Discovery Miles 6 320 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Established in the belief that imperialism as a cultural phenomenon had as significant an effect on the dominant as it did on the subordinate societies, the "Studies in Imperialism" series seeks to develop the new socio-cultural approach which has emerged through cross-disciplinary work on popular culture, media studies, art history, the study of education and religion, sports history and children's literature. The cultural emphasis embraces studies of migration and race, while the older political, and constitutional, economic and military concerns are never far away. It incorporates comparative work on European and American empire-building, with the chronological focus primarily, though not exclusively, on the 19th and 20th centuries, when these cultural exchanges were most powerfully at work. This work explores the sexual attitudes and activities of those who ran the British Empire. The study explains the pervasive importance of sexuality in the Victorian Empire, both for individuals and as a general dynamic in the working of the system. Among the topics included in the book are prostitution, the manners and mores of missionaries and aspects of race in sexual behaviour. -- .

Sexuality (Paperback, 5th edition): Jeffrey Weeks Sexuality (Paperback, 5th edition)
Jeffrey Weeks
R729 Discovery Miles 7 290 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Sexuality is the fifth revised and updated edition of the classic text for understanding human sexuality. This new edition brings the arguments and evidence fully up to date and explores their implication for many topical controversies, around LGBTQ+ rights, the trans experience and gender fluidity, same-sex marriage, sexual autonomy and consent, and the meanings of sexual choice. Since it was first published in the 1980s, Sexuality has been at the cutting edge of the study of the social and historical meanings of sexuality. Blending deep empirical knowledge with theoretical sophistication and an acute sensitivity to the politics of sexuality, the book offers an informed framework for understanding the complexities of sexual life. A key insight of the book is that the ways we think and speak about sexuality make a major contribution to the ways we live it. Sexuality may be rooted in biological possibilities, but it is shaped and experienced through languages and meanings which are inevitably historical and social in nature. The book explores with clarity and precision the invention and re-invention of sexual meanings, the question of what constitutes a true sex and the biological and social roots of sexual difference, the challenges of diversity, the re-making of sexuality as a highly divisive political subject and the implications of the transformation of intimate life in the past few generations. These are seen in the context of profound changes that are re-fashioning the world, especially globalisation, cyber-sex, and the rise of new forms of agency, including among women and LGBTQ+ people, which have fed into new claims for sexual human rights. This new edition of Sexuality will be an indispensable guide for students in the social sciences with an interest in the ever-changing worlds of sexuality.

Clinical Perspectives on Elderly Sexuality (Hardcover, 2000 ed.): Jennifer L. Hillman Clinical Perspectives on Elderly Sexuality (Hardcover, 2000 ed.)
Jennifer L. Hillman
R2,766 Discovery Miles 27 660 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Throughout my clinical training and practice, I have been surprised by the number of times that sexual issues have emerged as an unexpectedly central feature in my work with older adults. I can vividly remember my own internal reaction on hearing one of my elderly female patients tell me that she was date raped a few years after the death of her elderly husband-when she was 68 years old. I can see in my mind's eye the blood splattered on the floor of an inpatient unit from an elderly man who smashed his arm through a window, furious that his antidepressant medication made it impossible to climax through masturbation. On a much less dramatic but equally important note, I think about the elderly amputee who told me softly about his fears of resuming sexual activity with his wife of 25 years. I also think about the elderly woman whose inability to take herself shopping to find fashionable, comfortable clothes to fit over her hunched shoulders and large breasts helped precipitate a serious depression. In sum, I learned early on that elderly sexuality is not just about how many times a week someone makes love. It is my hope that sharing these experiences and introducing the related theories, research, and interventions will assist other clinicians in dealing with these often challenging and clinically demanding situations. Without my patients, this text would not have been possible.

Psychoendocrinology of Human Sexual Behavior. (Hardcover): Harold Persky Psychoendocrinology of Human Sexual Behavior. (Hardcover)
Harold Persky
R2,808 R2,542 Discovery Miles 25 420 Save R266 (9%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This up-to-date and important new work describes the relationship between psychological and hormonal factors found in human sexual behavior across the lifespan. The author's discussion of human sexual behavior is organized according to developmental stage, starting with the fetus and concluding with senescence. Persky proposes that human sexual behavior is determined by a variety of factors, e.g. social, psychological, and endocrine, and ascertains the relative contribution of each of these factors to a range of sexual behaviors, attitudes, and feelings. Furthermore, he provides documentation that these determinants are interrelated in reciprocal fashion. In addition, by organizing his material within the Life Development model, Persky is able to present normal and abnormal psychoendocrine relationships which lead to sexual disorders.

Sex Offender Treatment - Accomplishments, Challenges and Future Directions (Paperback): Edmond J. Coleman, Michael Miner Sex Offender Treatment - Accomplishments, Challenges and Future Directions (Paperback)
Edmond J. Coleman, Michael Miner
R776 Discovery Miles 7 760 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Examine the major advances in sexual offender treatment over the last decade and promising new concepts in treatment, supervision, and research
Sex Offender Treatment: Accomplishments, Challenges, and Future Directions points the way toward humane, dignified, effective treatment regimes for sexual offenders. In addition to providing an essential overview of the current state of sex offender treatment, this book examines vital areas of service provision and research and points to future directions for the field.
On the medical/psychological front, this volume explores the importance of recognizing comorbid psychiatric factors in treatment and of exploring central nervous system function's role as a cause of sexually inappropriate behavior. In the legislative/justice arena it illustrates a "Circles of Support" proposal that mobilizes community resources to aid the adjustment of released offenders rather than branding them as dangerous to the community. And in the area of service provision, this book presents a treatment approach for residential programs that is inspired by research on childhood behavioral problems and special education.
This book will increase your effectiveness with: a model of multisystemic treatment for juvenile sex offenders a restorative justice approach for reintegrating adult offenders into the community a study of the physical/mental correlates of organic brain dysfunction a case report on the use of a pharmaceutical treatment (leuprolide acetate) for pedophiles

44 Chapters about 4 Men (Paperback): BB Easton 44 Chapters about 4 Men (Paperback)
BB Easton
R412 R385 Discovery Miles 3 850 Save R27 (7%) Ships in 18 - 22 working days

One woman's secret journal completely changes her marriage in this hilarious and biting memoir--the inspiration for the Netflix Original Series SEX/LIFE. School psychologists aren't supposed to write books about sex. Doing so would be considered "unethical" and "a fireable offense." Lucky for you, ethics was never my strong suit. Sex/Life: 44 Chapters About 4 Men is a laugh-out-loud funny and brutally honest look at female sexuality, as told through the razor-sharp lens of domesticated bad girl BB Easton. No one and nothing is off limits as BB revisits the ex-boyfriends--a sadistic tattoo artist, a punk rock parolee, and a heavy metal bass player--that led her to finally find true love with a straight-laced, drop-dead-gorgeous . . . accountant. After settling down and starting a family with her perfectly vanilla "husbot," Ken, BB finds herself longing for the reckless passion she had in her youth. She begins to write about these escapades in a secret journal, just for fun, but when Ken starts to act out the words on the pages, BB realizes that she might have stumbled upon the holy grail of behavior modification techniques. The psychological dance that ensues is nothing short of hilarious as BB wields her journal like a blowtorch, trying to light a fire under her cold, distant partner. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, but in the end, BB learns that the man she was trying so hard to change was perfect for her all along. Tomorrow Sex Will Be Good Again - Women and Desire in the Age of Consent (Paperback): Katherine Angel Tomorrow Sex Will Be Good Again - Women and Desire in the Age of Consent (Paperback)
Katherine Angel
R256 Discovery Miles 2 560 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Women are in a bind. In the name of consent and empowerment, they must proclaim their desires clearly and confidently. Yet sex researchers suggest that women's desire is often slow to emerge. And men are keen to insist that they know what women-and their bodies-want. Meanwhile, sexual violence abounds. How can women, in this environment, possibly know what they want? And why do we expect them to? In this elegant, searching book-spanning science and popular culture; pornography and literature; debates on Me-Too, consent and feminism-Katherine Angel challenges our assumptions about women's desire. Why, she asks, should they be expected to know their desires? And how do we take sexual violence seriously, when not knowing what we want is key to both eroticism and personhood? In today's crucial moment of renewed attention to violence and power, Angel urges that we remake our thinking about sex, pleasure, and autonomy without any illusions about perfect self-knowledge. Only then will we fulfil Michel Foucault's teasing promise, in 1976, that 'tomorrow sex will be good again'

To Dance the Dance - A Symbolic Interactional Exploration of Premarital Sexuality (Hardcover): F. Scott Christopher To Dance the Dance - A Symbolic Interactional Exploration of Premarital Sexuality (Hardcover)
F. Scott Christopher
R4,499 Discovery Miles 44 990 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This pioneering monograph integrates the major research findings of the past four decades and offers a new model for the study of human sexuality. The author examines the empirical literature on sexuality for the developmental stages of childhood, adolescence, and young adulthood and for experiences of sexual aggression. He then uses symbolic interactionism to develop a theoretical model which integrates the research across the developmental periods and for instances of sexual aggression, providing one of the most comprehensive views of sexuality development that has yet been offered.
The work investigates the role of family, peers, romantic partners, and personality in the development of sexual expression and offers a unique vision of how symbolic interactionism can inform one's understanding of sexual beliefs and behaviors through the developmental stages. By acknowledging developmental differences and changes in individuals and their interpersonal relationship context, a more integrated understanding emerges of how sexuality develops.
This volume is intended for students and scholars interested in the influences on the development of sexual expression of youth and young adults. It will be of great interest to readers in psychology, family studies, communication, sociology, adolescent studies, and specialized areas of sexuality research. It is appropriate for undergraduate seminars and graduate-level courses on human sexuality, close relationships, family theory, sociology, communication, social psychology, developmental psychology, and related areas.

And you'll find that if your own lesbian relationship lies outside the "traditional monogamous couple" model, you're definitely not alone. You'll explore many multifaceted and multifarious love relationships, each one applicable to your own liking, if you so choose. You'll find successful models of relationship styles--regardless of your own orientation--from cover to cover, and you'll discover the pleasing polyphony in the many, many female voices of authorities on love and love relationships.Whereas other similar studies project the limited view of one or two authors, The Lesbian Polyamory Reader calls upon a broad scope of writers, professional women and academics alike. You'll see that outside the gay rights movement that currently pushes for a traditional, monogamous marriage model of gay couplehood, there lies pleasing multiplicity in the arms and hearts of lesbians worldwide. Specifically, this collection offers: "first person" articles--stories that describe a variety of lesbian experiences relating to multiple lovers in the 1970s, '80s, and '90s "how-to" articles--descriptions of the various polyamorous relationship configurations, including ways of dealing with jealousy"theoretical" pieces--the history of multiple relationships, the social implications of practicing a love style other than monogamous coupling, and safer sex considerationsMuch, much more than a book on personal satisfaction, The Lesbian Polyamory Reader also focuses on the social implications of this love phenomenon, bringing it into a more inclusive circle of discussion for lesbians, educators, and students of sociology and sexology. You'll find satisfaction in seeing the love so many lesbian women have achieved by not mimicking the "marriage model" of living.

The Empress Is a Man - Stories from the Life of Jose Sarria (Hardcover): Michael R. Gorman The Empress Is a Man - Stories from the Life of Jose Sarria (Hardcover)
Michael R. Gorman
R4,507 Discovery Miles 45 070 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

You may be familiar with the tremendous life achievements of Jose Sarria, an integral player in the gay rights movement, but never before have you heard the intimate details of his incredible life as they are portrayed here. In The Empress Is a Man: Stories from the Life of Jose Sarria (winner of the Lammy Award in the transgender category), Michael Gorman exposes Sarria s life in a frank manner and with a unique storytelling ability that simultaneously causes amusement and sadness. Sarria s amazing life story tells of his perserverance to advance the cause of equality for gay citizens. At a time when gays were arrested, institutionalized, and castrated, Sarria did not try to hide his beliefs and convictions. Sarria was ahead of his time, becoming a significant figure in gay history and culture. You ll find The Empress Is a Man fascinating as you read about the life of this truly courageous, outrageous, and remarkable man. Some of Sarria s experiences and achievements you ll read about include: being the first openly gay male to run for political office being one of America s most important female impersonators entertaining throughout the world, live and on film postitively affecting the gay community founding an extremely successful charity fundraising organization being featured in a PBS documentary serving in the Army in The Battle of the Bulge in WWIIUntil recently, gay and lesbian stories were published in very limited venues and often at great personal risk, forcing knowledge of this history to be passed down orally. The Empress Is a Man reflects this tradition by telling much of the story in Sarria s own words. Adding to the enjoyment and originality of this book is a structure similar to the dramatic style of a play or novel. Each section ends with an exciting climax, although the book is chronological in order. The Empress Is a Man is an untraditional book about an untraditional man.

As a clinical psychologist, Jean Baker had always considered herself open-minded and tolerant, but found she wasn?t prepared for the revelation that her only two children were both gay. Family Secrets is an inspirational story of how she and her family learned to accept one another and overcome their internalized fears and prejudices as well as how they coped with a much greater challenge in their personal lives--HIV/AIDS. Family Secrets is more than a parenting memoir, however. It is a guide that draws upon research and scientific findings to capsize the myths and stereotypes that contribute to societal homophobia. It offers important insight into the developmental needs of gay children, and it discusses the issues faced by gay and lesbian youth and their families.Offering practical suggestions about how parents and schools can help gay, lesbian, and bisexual children grow up to be productive, psychologically healthy adults, Family Secrets discusses the effects of social prejudice and stigma on the social and emotional development of sexual minorities. As long as homophobia is running rampant in American society, gay children are going to be reluctant or afraid to confide in their parents, and parents will have trouble understanding and accepting homosexuality in their children. To end the secrecy and build open and healthy environments for all children and adolescents, this book discusses: tactics for reducing homophobia in non-gay youths promoting tolerance and understanding of sexual minorities at home and in school the effects an AIDS death has on families "coming out" about HIV/AIDS discussing homosexuality with your children, regardless of whether or not they are gay or lesbian sexual orientation and the interaction of biology with experienceBecause Family Secrets is written from the viewpoint of a parent/psychologist, it offers insights into the developmental needs of gay and lesbian children in a way that no other book has done. School counselors, psychologists, marriage and family counselors, teachers, school administrators, and the parents and siblings of gays and lesbians will all benefit from reading this honest, helpful, and encouraging book.

R1,604 Discovery Miles 16 040 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

How far have we progressed from the days when showing a film such as Jack Smith 's Flaming Creatures landed the cinema 's programmer, projectionist, and ticket taker in jail? What are some of the hidden clues modern audiences are overlooking in older films that suggest a character 's bisexuality? Which famous actors, actresses, directors, and screenwriters were attracted to people of both sexes? In Bisexual Characters in Film, the first book to focus on the role of bisexual characters in film, you ll find answers to these questions and many more as you explore, analyze, and celebrate 80 years of bisexual movie characters (and the people who have created them) from around the world. A lively, entertaining, and informative commentary, this book examines the treatment of bisexual film characters and shows you how that treatment has been affected by societal forces such as censorship, politics, religious prejudices, homophobia, and sexual stereotypes. Bisexual Characters in Film looks at the contribution of bisexual people (and others who have had lovers of varying sexes) to the body of work available on film today. These include the directors, writers, actors, composers, and designers whose sexual orientation has informed their work. An analysis of the Motion Picture Production Code and its devastating effect on bisexual and homosexual screen images forms an important part of the book. You learn how, specifically, it eradicated gay, lesbian, and bisexual characters from Hollywood films as well as the role of bisexual, lesbian, and gay filmmakers in finally defeating it. Other questions you ll find answers to include: Who, or what, is a bisexual? How were bisexual characters represented in silent film, before the forces of censorship banned them from the screen? What bisexual myths and stereotypes are portrayed on film? What is the role of "camp" in bisexual film?Bisexual Characters in Film is a unique resource for researchers; librarians; film festival planners; the queer media; professors and students of lesbian, gay, and bisexual studies; bisexual activists; and general bisexual, gay, lesbian, and transgendered readers. It provides a much-needed view of bisexual representations in a major segment of our popular culture.

R4,529 Discovery Miles 45 290 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The absorbing subject of sexuality in the Middle Ages is examined here in 19 original articles written specifically for this handbook by major authorities in the field. The study of medieval sexuality poses problems for the researcher: indices in standard sources rarely refer to sexual topics, and standard secondary sources often ignore the material or say little about it. Yet a vast amount of research is available, and the information is accessible to the student who knows where to look and what to look for. This volume is a valuable guide to the material and an indicator of what subjects are likely to yield fresh scholarly rewards.

Sexuality in the ancient world has received much scholarly attention in the last few years, but most studies have tended to confine themselves to sources from Greece and Rome. Dominic Montserrat's new work is the first comprehensive study of sex in ancient Egypt.

The book considers sex in its broadest sense, analyzing not only the sexual practices of individuals but also the ways in which sexual activity was indivisibly woven into the fabric of social and communal life. The main sources are the numerous private documents written in Egypt during the Graeco-Roman period, fragments of history miraculously preserved by the dry climate.

Winner of the Distinguished Publication Award 1996 from the Association for Women in Psychology, Feminist Visions of Gender Similarities and Differences opens a dialectic between the two traditions of feminism--similarities-based and differences-based--and generates useful scientific, political, and psychological tensions. Psychologists and scholars can benefit from Meredith Kimball's analysis and the tensions she creates because they ultimately broaden feminist visions. She informs the political analysis of those working on the inside and those on the outside of feminism to end all forms of discrimination and oppression. In opening the dialogue between the two traditions, Kimball presents a brief history of gender research and equal-rights feminisms in the early twentieth century, with an in-depth analysis of the work of Leta Stetter Hollingworth. analyzes women's experience in and feminist critiques of science and technology. analyzes research on gender-related similarities and differences in mathematics achievement. presents a brief history of psychoanalytic gender theory and maternal feminisms in the early twentieth century, with an in-depth analysis of the work of Karen Horney. analyzes Kohlberg's and Gilligan's models of moral development. gives a broad overview and analysis of women's caregiving in North America and cross-culturally in motherist-based political movements. The educated reader, whether actively involved in feminism or the general political arena, can apply the non-reductionist political analysis to their own theories and research. Because all oppressed groups face dilemmas of integrating into the dominant culture versus changing the dominant culture, members of these groups will appreciate the over-arching political analysis that forms the theme of Feminist Visions of Gender Similarities and Differences.

Cultural Conflict and the Swedish Sexual Myth - The Male Immigrant's Encounter with Swedish Sexual and Cohabitation... Cultural Conflict and the Swedish Sexual Myth - The Male Immigrant's Encounter with Swedish Sexual and Cohabitation Culture (Hardcover, New)

R2,804 R2,538 Discovery Miles 25 380 Save R266 (9%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

During the past fifty years immigrants from 160 nations have transformed Sweden from an ethnically relatively homogeneous society into an intensely multi-ethnic one. By the beginning of the 1990s, more than one million out of a population of eight and a half million were immigrants or children of immigrants. By the early 1990s some ten percent of the Swedish population are foreign born. This change in Swedish life and culture results in considerable tension and misunderstandings. Perhaps, Mansson would contend, in no area is this more evident than in love relationships. In this book he sets out to explore different aspects of the encounter between immigrant males and Swedish sexual and cohabitation culture, and to analyze this encounter in relationship to the important elements in the cultural patterns and processes that have shaped and still shape immigrant male's gender-role specific socialization. In a world increasingly confronted with similar tensions and adaptations, this study is of considerable interests to sociologists and others concerned with contemporary multicultural society.
