Maria Isabel Romero Ruiz
R1,217 Discovery Miles 12 170 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book makes an analysis of prostitution in Cambridge in the Victorian period based on different social and cultural discourses as well as on archival materials concerning institutions devoted to the control and regulation of promiscuity and venereal disease. Among them were the Cambridge Union Workhouse, the Cambridge Female Refuge, the Spinning House (Cambridge University Female Prison) or the town and county gaols. Also, data from the census and local and state regulations are of great relevance in the approach to the study of the "Great Social Evil" and its consequences for Victorian Cambridge. The city was divided into "town and gown" at the time, with the University having its power and regulation over all its premises through the Vice-Chancellor's Court and its system of proctors, while the town council regulated the areas belonging to the city itself through the police. Therefore, University authorities, evangelicals and the middle-class joined their efforts to put an end to immorality, building Cambridge's architecture of containment of sexual deviance.

Critical Perspectives on Child Sexual Exploitation and Related Trafficking (Hardcover, New): M. Melrose, J. Pearce Critical Perspectives on Child Sexual Exploitation and Related Trafficking (Hardcover, New)
M. Melrose, J. Pearce
R3,455 Discovery Miles 34 550 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This collection is the first major exploration of the issues related to young people who are affected by child sexual exploitation (CSE) and child trafficking for exploitation. These include consideration of the language we currently use to construct and understand CSE; how to conceptualise CSE and sexual violence that takes place in gangs or between peers; issues of how 'consent' relates to young people in abusive or exploitative sexual relationships; how young people themselves might participate in work to improve service delivery; why some looked after young people are at greater risk of CSE than others and how they might keep safe. The volume also reviews policy and practice developments in Scotland; the risk of CSE for young women who go missing to escape forced marriages; the importance of including young people at risk of CSE in decision-making about their care; how and why trafficking and CSE came to be defined as objects of international policy concern and how community organizations might be mobilized to protect young people from the risk of trafficking for CSE.
This volume is essential reading for academics, students, practitioners and policymakers in the fields of social work and social policy, child protection and youth work, criminology and sociology and the health care services.

Outpatient Treatment of Sex and Love Addicts (Hardcover, New): Eric Griffin-Shelley Outpatient Treatment of Sex and Love Addicts (Hardcover, New)
Eric Griffin-Shelley
R2,214 Discovery Miles 22 140 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Many treatment programs and professional training efforts have been developed in the past five years for sexual compulsiveness and love dependencies. This work includes a description of an intensive outpatient therapy program that is designed to treat the sexually addicted patient. Initially, these patients had been treated with individual psychotherapy and attendance at Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous meetings. While this approach seemed to work for some, many needed a more intensive therapeutic intervention to help them identify and maintain bottom line behaviors and to begin the recovery process from this difficult addiction.

A program was designed with the following elements: psychoeducational groups, same-sex group psychotherapy, and 12-Step meetings. Some of these educational sessions have covered: adult sexuality, self-esteem, communication skills, shame, depression, cross addictions, healthy relationships, the addiction cycle, and so on. In addition to lectures there are group and dyad/triad discussions, role playing, and psychodrama. This is followed by traditional group therapy, although groups are limited to the same sex. At the end of the intensive evening program, there is a meeting of Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) that is open to the public. This is the only book that addresses diagnostic, neurochemical, and treatment issues of sexual compulsivity in such depth.

Telling Truths - Evelyn Conlon and the Task of Writing (Paperback, New edition): Teresa Caneda Telling Truths - Evelyn Conlon and the Task of Writing (Paperback, New edition)
Teresa Caneda
R1,222 Discovery Miles 12 220 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Evelyn Conlon is one of Ireland's most important writers. She has published four collections of short stories, My Head is Opening (1987), Taking Scarlet as a Real Colour (1993), Telling: New and Selected Short Stories (2000) and Moving about the Place (2021) and four novels, Stars in the Daytime (1989), A Glassful of Letters (1998) Skin of Dreams (2003) and Not the Same Sky (2013). She has also edited Later On: The Monaghan Bombing Memorial Anthology (2004). Telling Truths: Evelyn Conlon and the Task of Writing is the first book to provide a critical assessment of her work. Drawing on a variety of perspectives such as feminism, ethics, famine studies, mobility studies, translation studies, short fiction, narratology and historiographic metafiction, the essays gathered in this volume reveal that Conlon's writing, characterised by sharp observation, insistently questions the predetermined course of female existence, explores alternative forms of freedom and ultimately reflects her commitment to seek and tell truths. The intersectional approach of the book is part of a current endeavour in Irish Studies to keep interrogating well established topics, to examine the elusiveness of others and to explore new boundaries through renewed epistemological and ethical positions.

Sexualities: Past Reflections, Future Directions (Hardcover): Sally Hines, Yvette Taylor Sexualities: Past Reflections, Future Directions (Hardcover)
Sally Hines, Yvette Taylor
R1,538 Discovery Miles 15 380 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

With contributions from established and emerging scholars, this collection draws on original research to consider recent theoretical and methodological debates, shifts in law and policy, and social and cultural changes around sexuality. The book bridges identified gaps between theory, research methods and practice, and lived experiences across time and place. It reflects on the current wave of interdisciplinary work, setting out new ways of conceptualizing and researching sexuality and explores persistently marginalized, re-traditionalized and normative sexual practices, subjectivities and identities. This distinctive consideration of innovative contributions from across the humanities and social sciences places emergent debates, enduring legacies and new queries within its 'reflections' and 'futures'.

Becoming a Kink Aware Therapist (Paperback): Caroline Shahbaz, Peter Chirinos Becoming a Kink Aware Therapist (Paperback)
Caroline Shahbaz, Peter Chirinos
R752 Discovery Miles 7 520 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

As a result of recent media interest, the practice of BDSM has become more mainstream yet remains marginalized. Now more than ever, greater numbers of heterosexual and LGBTQ couples are starting to explore some form of BDSM. However, profound misunderstandings continue leading to unintentional physical and psychological harm. Drawing on current research and ethnographic narratives from the kink community, this book seeks to provide psychotherapists with an introductory understanding of the culture and practice of BDSM, and presents specific therapeutic concerns related to common misconceptions. This book strives to de-pathologize BDSM practices, while also providing concrete ways to distinguish abuse from consent, harmful codependency, and more. Packed with practical suggestions and rich case studies, this book belongs on the shelf of every therapist seeing BDSM and kink clients.

A tour of polyamory in America over the last 50 years. Fifty Years of Polyamory in America: A Guided Tour to a Growing Movement is unique among the many books about polyamory because the scope of this book is the entire history of the polyamory movement. Instead of concentrating on the experiences of a few people exploring alternate lifestyles, it is an exploration of two generations of Americans, the people and the organizations they founded, what they have chosen to do, and how it has changed their lives and affected the culture as a whole. Written in an entertaining and easily accessible style, the authors cover the history of alternative sexual relationship styles starting with a quick peek at colonial times, the Mormon and Oneida movements of the 1840s-70s, and modern day influences starting in the 1950s. Polyamory, literally "many loves," challenges the relationship norm: monogamy. As its name suggests, polyamory typically refers to emotional/sexual relationships that include multiple partners. Common applications of polyamory include open marriages, triad (three people), two-couple (four people) "marriages," and larger groups like intimate networks. Swingers are a subset of non-monogamy who often identify as poly. Throughout the course of Fifty Years of Polyamory in America, we explore the history of the polyamory movement: from clinical definitions and attempts at psychiatric treatment, to the advent of advocacy groups in the 1960s and '70s, to contemporary practitioners and the future of the movement. A wide range of personal stories from advocates and practitioners guides the narrative to the modern day, highlighting the struggles and successes of the movement throughout the years.

Ambiguity and Sexuality - A Theory of Sexual Identity (Hardcover, 2008 ed.): W. Wilkerson Ambiguity and Sexuality - A Theory of Sexual Identity (Hardcover, 2008 ed.)
W. Wilkerson
R1,515 Discovery Miles 15 150 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The author offers a new account of the formation of sexual identity, coined "emerged fusion," which avoids the traps of the essentialism versus constructivism debate, and offers a viable third alternative. This book is a theoretical tool that will be useful in sociology, queer studies, and gender studies as a new approach to understanding sexual identity.

Voyeurism - A Case Study (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Simon Duff Voyeurism - A Case Study (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Simon Duff
R1,587 Discovery Miles 15 870 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

This book is amongst the first of its kind in presenting a case study of voyeurism from a forensic psychology perspective and within the societal context. Simon Duff provides an in-depth description of the assessment, formulation, and treatment of a voyeur and offers a theoretical basis for the behaviour. The book begins by covering a variety of explanations and previous treatments for voyeurs, including learning theories and the aversive treatments that they give rise to. It then moves on to focus on one specific case study, a young man who has exhibited diversity in his voyeuristic offending, before examining relevant details of his experiences in order to develop a formulation of his thinking and behaviour. The formulation and resultant intervention are clearly and accessibly presented, followed by a discussion of how this case provides direction for further research, developments in our theoretical basis for understanding voyeurism, and directions for assessment and intervention.

Please Scream Quietly - A Story of Kink (Paperback): Julie L. Fennell Please Scream Quietly - A Story of Kink (Paperback)
Julie L. Fennell
R788 Discovery Miles 7 880 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Please Scream Quietly is the collective autobiography of the BDSM subculture. It argues that most people are a little bit kinky, but the BDSM subculture teaches its members to emphasize and cherish their kinky differences. Drawing from interviews, survey data, and years of observations conducted by a self-identified kinkster and professional sociologist, it tells the story of how people live and love in this much misunderstood subculture. The book begins with a discussion of BDSM identities, explaining how kinksters learn to define kink/BDSM, and to construct socially meaningful identities for themselves as kinksters. It next discusses what kinksters get out of doing BDSM, with a particular focus on how they experience BDSM as sexual or not. It then moves from individual experiences to relationships, with a focus on BDSM relationships and consensual non-monogamy/polyamory in the subculture. Then it describes community-level experiences of group norms and rules, analyzing subcultural demographics, as well as behavioral and attitudinal norms in and out of public BDSM dungeons. The book concludes with an analysis of how the subculture constructs positive and negative social status for members, and reflects on how the subculture's world of BDSM might be different from BDSM outside of it.

Sexual Fluidity Among Millennial Women - Journeys Across a Shifting Sexual Landscape (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022): Alice Campbell Sexual Fluidity Among Millennial Women - Journeys Across a Shifting Sexual Landscape (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022)
Alice Campbell
R2,874 Discovery Miles 28 740 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Drawing on data collected from over 8,000 millennial women in Australia, this book proposes a new theory of women's sexual identity that accounts for various sociocultural, historical, and interactional factors that inform women's sexualities. The author provides a new model for understanding changes in sexual identity among women. Each new chapter focuses on a new aspect of their model: the contemporary context in which women are navigating sexual identities; sexual landscapes and the degree of heteronormativity that characterizes various sexual landscapes; experiences of sexual violence and their potential associations with the sexual trajectories of women; and the potential health and wellbeing implications of changes in sexual identity. Taken as a whole, this text challenges the essentialist framing of the "species" narrative in favor of a more nuanced and socially situated analysis of women's sexualities throughout the life course. This monograph will be of interest to scholars and students in sociology, gender and sexuality studies, and psychology.

Incest as Child Abuse - Research and Applications (Hardcover): Ronald Neff, Brenda J. Vander May Incest as Child Abuse - Research and Applications (Hardcover)
Ronald Neff, Brenda J. Vander May
R2,774 Discovery Miles 27 740 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book approaches as a serious and severe form of child abuse. While early research tended to portray victims as seductive provocateers, recent studies indicate that birth order, family configuration factors, personality, physical and socio-economic factors may predispose children to risk of incestuous victimization. Incest is associated with anti-social, deviant, illegal and/or self-destructive coping mechanisms in many victims. This book contains data from two sets of substantiated and investigated incest cases taken from official reports by the Department of Welfare in Mississippi and the Department of Welfare in Virginia. It compares the findings from these two data sets to further delineate risk factors and family variables found in incest families. The authors further compare the case studies with previous research findings in order to provide direction for future research, intervention and prevention.

Jung and Sex - Re-visioning the treatment of sexual issues (Paperback): Edward Santana Jung and Sex - Re-visioning the treatment of sexual issues (Paperback)
Edward Santana
R1,399 Discovery Miles 13 990 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

C. G. Jung, despite not being widely known for his views on sexuality or the treatment of sexual issues, made extensive contributions to understanding the complexities of this field throughout his life. In Jung and Sex, Edward Santana makes the case that reclaiming this knowledge can address substantial problems with current treatments and support many who struggle with sexual issues. This thorough exploration of Jung's approach to sexual issues presents a wide-ranging new look at his work and adds contemporary perspectives for helping those suffering with sexual difficulties. The book calls for an important bridging of clinical perspectives to address the contemporary challenges of complex sexual issues and brings attention to a large body of Jung's work on human sexuality, ranging from pioneering thoughts on sexual expressions of the soul to understanding ways to treat sexual symptoms. Jung and Sex provides a comprehensive analysis of Jung's views on, and clinical approaches to, sexual issues and treatments, using this knowledge in order to help those with sexual problems and the professionals who support them. It is an essential text for understanding critical dimensions of human sexuality. Jung and Sex is an important contribution that closes a gap in the literature of Jungian psychology. It offers unique insights into the subject for Jungian psychotherapists, analytical psychologists, sex therapists, and relationship counselors. The book also supports the work of academics and those interested in contemporary applications of Jungian and post-Jungian studies.

Helen Swaby, Belinda Winder, Rebecca Lievesley, Kerensa Hocken, Nicholas Blagden, …
R3,891 Discovery Miles 38 910 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book explores the growing understanding and evidence base for the role of trauma in sexual offending. It represents a paradigm shift, in which trauma is becoming an important risk factor to be considered in the treatment of individuals convicted of sexual crime. The authors consider the theoretical and historical explanations and understandings of sexual offending and its relationship with early trauma, paving the way for a volume which considers client's treatment needs through a new, trauma-informed lens. The experiences and challenges of specific groups are also explored, including young people and women. Readable, yet firmly anchored in a sound evidence base, this book is relevant to psychologists, therapists, criminologists, psychiatrists, mental health nurses, social workers, students, and to practitioners and the general public with an interest in learning more about the topic.
