An Introduction to Masculinities (Paperback): J.S. Kahn An Introduction to Masculinities (Paperback)
J.S. Kahn
R1,382 Discovery Miles 13 820 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In the last thirty years, there has been a tremendous growth in the academic inquiry to understand men in their experiences as men. This growth is largely due to growing awareness of the problems that people face in trying to understand what it means to be masculine. This text introduces students to the research, theories, and basic issues in the field of Men and Masculinities, highlighting debates about the definition, origin, and the crisis in masculinity. The author provides a framework for studying the field of masculinities incorporating feminist, social constructionist, and interdisciplinary perspectives.

Written in an accessible style, "An Introduction to Masculinities" provides personal anecdotes and contemporary examples to make the theoretical concepts relevant to students' lives. The text also introduces students to leading contributors and experts whose work have informed the field. The author gives the reader a context and structure by which they can critically understand and evaluate information about men and masculinities.

The First Sexual Revolution - The Emergence of Male Heterosexuality in Modern America (Hardcover, New): Kevin F. White The First Sexual Revolution - The Emergence of Male Heterosexuality in Modern America (Hardcover, New)
Kevin F. White
R2,871 Discovery Miles 28 710 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

"Based on impressive research in a wide variety of sources, including popular literature, advertisements, true confession and physique magazines, advice columns, sex surveys, vice investigation reports, and personal letters, "The First Sexual Revolution" offers a provocative interpretation of the impact of the sexual revolution on men. White's boldly-stated criticism of sexual liberalism is sure to arouse controversy. Yet his view of men confused by new expectations of attractiveness and sexiness, threatened by women's demands for sexual satisfaction, yet essentially still in control, is compelling."
--Leila J. Rupp Ohio State University, Co-author of "Survival in the Doldrums: The American Women's Rights Movement, 1945 to the 1960s,"

In the early 1900s, a sexual revolution took place that was to define social relations between the sexes in America for generations. As Victorian values gradually faded, and a commercialized consumer culture emerged, the female figure of the flapper came to embody early-twentieth century femininity. Simultaneously, masculine ideals were also undergoing radical change. Who then was this New Man to accompany the New Woman? Who was the flapper's boyfriend?

In this remarkable book, Kevin White draws on a vast array of sources to examine the ideology--spread through movies, advertisements, sex confession magazines, social hygienists, sex manuals, and Freudian popularizers --that has defined modern American manhood. Examining attitudes toward masturbation, homosexuality, violence against women, feminism, free love, and the emerging dating system, "The First Sexual Revolution" shows how American men in the Jazz Age were subjected to a barrage ofinformation and advice about their sexuality that stressed not character but personality and sex appeal. Repression was out; sexual expression--performance--was in.

This New Man was more egalitarian and more sexual than the Victorian patriarch. But the diffusion to the middle class of the Victorian underworld ethos of primitivism and violence against women, and the flight from commitment to relationships, heralded instability and tensions that continues to define American sexual relations. To illustrate this point, Dr. White takes a close look--through letters and diaries--at the successes and failures of nine marriages involving actively feminist women, demonstrating the pressures that this revolution in values caused. Dr. White concludes that the return to primitivism characterized by the men's movement marks the most recent aftershock of the revolution that has shaped us all.

Sex, Love, and Fidelity - A Study of Contemporary Romantic Relationships (Hardcover, New): Kassia Wosick Sex, Love, and Fidelity - A Study of Contemporary Romantic Relationships (Hardcover, New)
Kassia Wosick
R2,288 Discovery Miles 22 880 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

"Extremely well-researched and coherently argued, this book presents top-quality research and draws appropriately on the existing knowledge in this area. The focus on fidelity across different kinds of relationship structures is very original and will prove an important contribution to the field of relationship research. A key strength of this study is that the analysis pays attention to both commonalities and diversity (which is rare, even in qualitative research). The analysis is also both clearly expressed and sophisticated." - Dr. Meg Barker, Open University "This is a fascinating investigation of the meaning of 'love, ' 'sex, ' and 'fidelity' for different kinds of couples. Kassia Wosick reports on a survey and in-depth conversations with couples that were straight and gay, monogamous and non-monogamous, traditional and polyamorous. 'Love' and 'being special' are enormously important in all of these groups. But she also finds startling differences. For some, sexual exclusiveness is critical. For others, being faithful means not loving anyone else, but sex with others is ok. For polyamorous couples, having explicit rules and being open and honest is the heart of fidelity and being special. And "having sex" can mean many different things. This book persuasively argues that we need more flexible, emotion-focused concepts of love, commitment and fidelity. The traditional focus on sexual exclusivity does not fit many contemporary relationships. This is a very valuable book for researchers and therapists, and for all of us who care about 'love, ' 'sex, ' and 'faithfulness'." - Professor Francesca Cancian, University of California, Irvine "Engaging, insightful, thoroughly researched, and well written, Sex, Love, and Fidelity: Study of Contemporary Romantic Relationships provides a compelling analysis of evolving relationships with a unique focus on levels of monogamy that surpasses previous studies to contribute refreshing insights into current meanings of sexuality and love. Wosick untangles the myriad cultural assumptions underlying the concept of fidelity and details the various ways in which fidelity expresses in a range of contemporary relationships, from dual fidelity and strict monogamy through veiled fidelity and almost monogamy to specified fidelity and non-monogamy and ending with agentic fidelity and polyamory. Now that few people in the US expect to be monogamous in the classical sense of marrying as a virgin and remaining in one, life-long, sexually exclusive relationship, Sex, Love, and Fidelity provides the information necessary for us to update our understandings of contemporary love and commitment." - Dr. Elisabeth Sheff, Sheff Consulting Group

The Science of Romance - Secrets of the Sexual Brain (Hardcover): Nigel Barber The Science of Romance - Secrets of the Sexual Brain (Hardcover)
Nigel Barber
R644 Discovery Miles 6 440 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Have you ever wondered why divorce is so much more common now than a century ago? Why the sex appeal of certain body types and clothing styles changes so dramatically over time? Why so many liberated young women today prefer emotional commitment from men while their male counterparts seem always more interested in "sowing their wild oats"?
According to evolutionary psychologist Nigel Barber, each of these aspects of modern life reflects two million years of hominid evolution. In The Science of Romance he explains that much of our present behavior can be traced back to the ancient evolved motives of our hunter-gatherer ancestors. In short, we exhibit the behaviors that have evolved over millennia to increase the reproductive success of the species. Also drawing on the mating behavior of various animals, Barber finds illuminating comparisons that help to explain human actions and reactions.
Barber delves into a host of interesting topics: dating competition and aggression; female courtship signals that subtly manipulate male behavior; how exposure to different sex hormones shapes the evolving brain in utero, which may account for the different behaviors of men and women; and much more.
This absorbing book educates and entertains, while showing that many seemingly irrational aspects of our intimate romantic behavior make sense when understood in terms of our prehistoric ancestors and evolution.

Sexual Subjects - Young People, Sexuality and Education (Hardcover, 2005 ed.): L. Allen Sexual Subjects - Young People, Sexuality and Education (Hardcover, 2005 ed.)
L. Allen
R2,647 Discovery Miles 26 470 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Educating young people about sex and sexuality remains one of the most controversial and political areas of the school curriculum. Drawing on young people's own understandings of their sexual selves, knowledge and practices "Sexual Subjects" considers the implications for how we conceptualize the effectiveness of sexuality education. Reshaping thinking around youthful (hetero)sexualities "Sexual Subjects" challenges current approaches to teaching about sex and sexuality.

Tomi-Ann Roberts, Nicola Curtin, Lauren E Duncan, Lilia M Cortina
R3,840 Discovery Miles 38 400 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This timely and thought-provoking collection explores the ways in which psychological science interacts with and addresses gender across varied subdisciplines in the field, from a feminist viewpoint. A particular aim of this volume is to move the conversation of gender in psychology beyond a difference-only paradigm. Veteran and emerging feminist scholars survey the handling of sex and gender issues across psychology, and describe how feminist perspectives and methodologies can and should be applied to enhance the field itself, but also in the service of social justice in the various cultures of corporations, academia, and the global stage. Contributions span theoretical advances, latest empirical findings, and real-world advocacy, with instructive and illuminating first-person accounts detailing challenges and rewards of feminist scholarship and practice in psychology. Throughout the volume, chapters document a dynamic field in its evolution from the traditional, two-dimensional study of gender-based differences to concerted multidisciplinary approaches, to cutting edge feminist theoretical and methodological advances such as intersectionality to understand gender in context. The volume is divided into three distinct sections. The first covers current theory and research in psychological science that considers gender beyond a difference-only paradigm. Then, leading feminist scholars reflect upon their own experiences in their respective subdisciplines. Finally, the third section explores innovative best practices and applications for feminist psychological science. Highlights of the coverage: * Beyond difference: Gender as a quality of social settings. * Adventures in feminist health psychology: Teaching about and conducting feminist psychological science. * Mind the thigh gap? Bringing feminist psychological science to the masses. * Feminist psychologists and institutional change in universities. With its stimulating compilation of theories, research, and applications, Feminist Perspectives On Building A Better Psychological Science of Gender is one of the most forward-thinking and innovative treatments of the field in recent years. It is a significant and important text for all psychologists, women's and gender studies specialists, social science researchers, and all those interested in using evidence-based psychological science to create a more just and equitable world.

True Nature - A Theory of Sexual Attraction (Hardcover, 2000 ed.): Michael R. Kauth True Nature - A Theory of Sexual Attraction (Hardcover, 2000 ed.)
Michael R. Kauth
R2,871 Discovery Miles 28 710 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

I have long been awe-struck by authors' claims that their books had been in the making for 5, or 10, or even 15 years. I now have a better appreciation ofthe work involved in bringing a book to press. The seeds of this project have had a long germination. The impetus for this book began more than 10 years ago when I was a graduate student in clinical psychology. Having an interest in human sexuality-and in theories on the forms of sexual attraction specifically-I was perplexed by various perspectives on this subject. Disciplines of thought that I encountered medicine, evolutionary biology, developmental psychology, gay/lesbian theory, social constructionism, anthropology, Marxism, Christianity, and others-perceived the issue so differently, so strongly, with almost no overlap. I was fascinated that the question ofhow and why one is attracted to either one or both sexes could elicit such conviction and divergent points of view. There seemed to be no easy way to resolve these differences. Still, what frustrated me most in my readings were several conceptual problems among the two prominent proponents of contemporary sexuality theory scientists and social constructionists. One ofmy first frustrations with biomedical and social scientists who write about sexuality was that they often define sexual attraction in strict behavioral terms, as completed observable sexual acts--observable in the sense that such acts or their consequences are seen by others."

"A wonderfully diverse array of classic and contemporary readings"
--"Contemporary Psychology APA Review of Books"

In The Gender and Psychology Reader, Blythe McVicker Clinchy and Julie K. Norem have culled through a diverse group of readings to provide a wide-ranging exploration of both progress made and problems encountered as psychologists grapple with gender. The volume includes both classic and contemporary readings, drawn from all branches of psychology-- social, developmental, personality, cognitive, history, physiological/biological--as well as from other disciplines, including sociology, philosophy, and anthropology.

The essays cover a gamut of subjects including epistemological issues, the study of difference, the embodiment of gender, autonomy and connection in relationships, and clinical implications. A concluding chapter by the editors considers themes that can be traced through the different sections, gaps in current perspectives, and future directions.

The Gender and Psychology Reader includes contributions from an array of distinguished scholars from varying methodological and disciplinary backgrounds. Among the contributors are Laurel Furumoto, Jeanne Marecek, Laura S. Brown, Anne Fausto- Sterling, Sandra Lipsitz Bem, Michelle Fine, Jospeh H. Pleck, J. G. Morawski, Daniel A. Hart, Barrie Thorne, and Aida Hurtado. Organized for easy use as either a primary or supplementary text for upper-level undergraduate and graduate courses in psychology, The Gender and Psychology Reader will also serve as the essential reference for those in clinical practice interested in gender issues.

The Manhood Rx - Every Man's Guide to Improving Sexual Health and Overall Wellness (Hardcover): Arthur Burnett The Manhood Rx - Every Man's Guide to Improving Sexual Health and Overall Wellness (Hardcover)
Arthur Burnett
R951 Discovery Miles 9 510 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A top urologist's prescription for better sexual health and overall wellness. According to research studies, men with health problems, and more specifically sexual health problems, are more likely than women to have had no recent contact with a doctor regardless of income or ethnicity. This reluctance to seek medical help means that for men, their diseases often go undetected until it is significantly progressed, and this late discovery has serious consequences. To make matters worse, when men do see their physicians, many doctors find it difficult to talk about sexual health with their patients. Common conditions such as erectile dysfunction or Peyronie's disease (an acquired penile curvature) are often dismissed or simply go unaddressed. This avoidance creates real health problems: erectile dysfunction (ED)alone affects as much as 20% of men worldwide, occurring in as much as 52% of men between the ages 40 and 70. Serious skin cancers, penile injuries, and infections can go untreated for years. And, doctors lose a valuable tool in predicting other chronic health issues when sexual health isn't discussed. Dr. Burnett takes a deep dive here into identifying what healthy sexual function actually looks like, and clearly identifies the distinct components of the male sexual response that every healthy man experiences. For each of these components, readers will learn about the specific problems that can present, their underlying or contributing causes, and how each can be resolved. It will explode the myth that the only way to enhance men's sexual health is through testosterone therapies. Instead, his effective prescription for enhanced sexual function and overall health highlights the best that evidence-based medicine has to offer: a comprehensive mixture of easy yet important lifestyle changes, the most advanced medications including hormone therapies when they are appropriately administered, mental health therapies, external aids, and surgery. In total, readers will have a cutting-edge life strategy for achieving optimal sexual health now and for years to come.

Unspeakable Monsters in All Our Lives (Paperback): John Money Unspeakable Monsters in All Our Lives (Paperback)
John Money
R553 Discovery Miles 5 530 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This fascinating work is a summing up of Dr. John Money's clinical experience and research on the frontiers of human sexuality. Written in response to the current lack of
a fully recognized science of sexology and full-service sexology clinics, Money gives
professionals and lay persons alike the techniques for recognizing the "unspeakable monsters" of sexual disease that lurk behind many physical and mental problems. Money contends that sexually related diseases like AIDS and sex crimes such as child abuse, rape, and serial murder will continue to wreak havoc in society until we learn to deal scientifically with the sometimes disturbing realities of sexuality.

Using case studies and well-known examples, the author proposes five universal human needs and three categories of coping strategies where major sexual problems find pathological camouflage to elude detection and treatment, often until it's too late.

John Money is a giant in the field of sex research, whose numerous contributions are considered by many to surpass the work of Kinsey and Masters and Johnson.

Fabian Saleh, Albert Grudzinskas, Abigail Judge
R2,670 Discovery Miles 26 700 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The nexus between the digital revolution and adolescent sexual behavior has posed significant challenges to mental health practitioners, attorneys, and educators. These digital technologies may facilitate dangerous behaviors and serious consequences for some youth. Adolescent Sexual Development in the Digital Age considers adolescent sexual behavior in both clinical and legal contexts and provides a basis for clinicians, legal professionals, educators, policy makers, parents and the general public to understand the impact that technology has on human growth and development. The book's contributing authors are leading authorities in adolescent development, law, and ethics, fostering an interdisciplinary dialogue within the text. New technology poses many opportunities for both normal and risky sexual behavior in youth; including "sexting," social networking, cyber-sexual harassment, commercial exploitation of children, and child pornography. Beyond just cataloging the various technologies impacting sexual behavior, this volume offers guidance and strategies for addressing the issues created by the digital age.

What are the differences between men and women as sexual partners? How do desire, pleasure, intimacy, gender and morality become part of a woman's sense of self? Asking these and other questions, this study breaks the stand-off between essentialists and constructionists to propose a fresh re-thinking of the desiring self.
