The Young Child in Context - A Psycho-Social Perspective (Paperback, 2): Mw De Witt The Young Child in Context - A Psycho-Social Perspective (Paperback, 2)
Mw De Witt 1
R670 R620 Discovery Miles 6 200 Save R50 (7%) Ships in 7 - 10 working days

Children are constantly changing and undergoing processes of emotional and physical development as they grow and experience their world. At each age and stage of development, children need support and assurance from adults in order to assimilate the effects of these changes. The pace of any child's development and its outcome are determined by both genetic factors and the influence of the environment. The young child in context examines the complex yet clearly defined phases in child development and how best to encourage and assist children through the formative first nine years of their lives. The young child in context follows two different perspectives on the development of the young child: psychological and socio-educational. Each chapter provides definitions of concepts, self-test questions and field assignments related to the topics covered. The young child in context is aimed at researchers and subject specialists interested in early childhood.

Child And Youth Misbehaviour In South Africa - A Holistic Approach (Paperback, 3rd Edition): Christiaan Bezuidenhout Child And Youth Misbehaviour In South Africa - A Holistic Approach (Paperback, 3rd Edition)
Christiaan Bezuidenhout
R650 R601 Discovery Miles 6 010 Save R49 (8%) Ships in 7 - 10 working days

While crime on the whole is a matter of grave concern in South Africa, crime involving juvenile offenders is particularly so and it is on the rise. Sexual offences among children are occurring more frequently, and children are increasingly being trafficked and used as sex workers or slaves. Despite specific laws having been promulgated to protect them, sexual abuse of children and neglect are rife, with many children growing up in a very unforgiving environment that never allows them the opportunity to develop morally according to the prescriptions of a democratic society. Child and youth misbehaviour in South Africa addresses the complex and poorly understood phenomenon of juvenile misbehaviour. It discusses and analyses various theories on the nature and causes of aberrant behaviour, and assesses them critically with regard to their applicability to South Africa. In order to understand the youth misbehaviour problem as it manifests in this country, it is essential that the position of youths be understood. Solutions may be found by considering the following: The difficulty in demarcating the position of children in South Africa; The local risk factors associated with juvenile misbehaviour; The effective processing and treatment of youthful offenders by the South African criminal justice system; Preventive measures based on constitutional guidelines. Child and youth misbehaviour in South Africa is aimed at enabling both practitioners and students to address the plight of the South African youth in a constructive way and so become part of creating a safer South Africa for its people.

Everyone has the right to education. The main objective of any education system in a democratic society is to provide quality education for all learners so that they will be able to reach their full potential and contribute meaningfully to and participate in that society throughout their lives. With the publication of the Education White Paper 6 in 2001, South Africa proclaimed its policy of inclusive education; however this policy is not always clearly understood by educators. Addressing barriers to learning provides relevant and in-depth knowledge to better prepare educators to teach all the learners in their class groups. Addressing barriers to learning covers the complete continuum of learners as reflected in the Education White Paper 6, and includes the most vulnerable of them: those who are economically and educationally disadvantaged, those with physical, sensory, intellectual, and/or learning impairment as well as those displaying challenging behaviour who are at risk of exclusion. Case studies offer practical examples and activities provide hands-on experience regarding classroom practice and management, collaboration with all role players and mobilisation of community involvement, which is at the heart of true inclusion. Addressing barriers to learning is aimed at both prospective and current educators.

Interpreting Statistics for Beginners teaches readers to correctly read and interpret results of basic statistical procedures as they are presented in scientific literature, and to understand what they can and cannot infer from such results.

The first of its kind, this book explains key elements of scientific paradigms and philosophical concepts that the use of statistics is based on and introduces readers to basic statistical concepts, descriptive statistics and basic elements and procedures of inferential statistics. Explanations are accompanied with detailed examples from scientific publications to demonstrate how the procedures are used and correctly interpreted. Additionally, Interpreting Statistics for Beginners shows readers how to recognize pseudoscientific claims that use statistics or statements not based on the presented data, which is an important skill for every professional relying on statistics in their work.

Written in an easy-to-read style and focusing on explaining concepts behind statistical calculations, the book is most helpful for readers with no previous training in statistics, and also those wishing to bridge the conceptual gap between doing the statistical calculations and interpreting the results.

Policing and Boundaries in a Violent Society - A South African Case Study (Hardcover): Guy Lamb Policing and Boundaries in a Violent Society - A South African Case Study (Hardcover)

R790 R738 Discovery Miles 7 380 Save R52 (7%) Ships in 5 - 10 working days

This book explores how social and territorial boundaries have influenced the approaches and practices of the South Africa Police Service (SAPS). By means of a historical analysis of South Africa, this book introduces a new concept, ‘police frontierism’, which illuminates the nature of the relationships between the police, policing and boundaries, and can potentially be used for future case study research.

Drawing on a wealth of research, this book examines how social and territorial boundaries strongly influenced police practices and behaviour in South Africa, and how social delineations amplify and distort existing police prejudices against those communities on the other side of the boundary. Focusing on cases of high-density police operations, public-order policing and the recent policing of the COVID-19 lockdown, this book argues that poor economic conditions combined with an increased militarisation of the SAPS and a decline in public trust in the police will result in boundaries continuing to fundamentally inform police work in South Africa.

This book will be of interest to scholars and students interested in policing in post-colonial societies characterised by high levels of violence, as well as police work and police militarization.

R500 R472 Discovery Miles 4 720 Save R28 (6%) Ships in 5 - 10 working days

Policing in South Africa has gained notoriety through its extensive history of oppressive law enforcement. In 1994, as the country’s apartheid system was replaced with a democratic order, the new government faced the significant challenge of transforming the South African police force into a democratic police agency―the South African Police Service (SAPS)―that would provide unbiased policing to all the country’s people. More than two decades since the initiation of the reforms, it appears that the SAPS has rapidly developed a reputation as a police agency beset by challenges to its integrity.

This book offers a unique perspective by providing in-depth analyses of police integrity in South Africa. It is a case study that systematically and empirically explores the contours of police integrity in a young democracy. Using the organizational theory of police integrity, the book analyzes the complex set of historical, legal, political, social, and economic circumstances shaping police integrity. A discussion of the theoretical framework is accompanied by the results of a nationwide survey of nearly 900 SAPS officers, probing their familiarity with official rules, their expectations of discipline within the SAPS, and their willingness to report misconduct. The book also examines the influence of the respondents’ race, gender, and supervisory status on police integrity.

Written in a clear and direct style, this book will appeal to students and scholars of criminology, policing, sociology, political science, as well as to police administrators interested in expanding their knowledge about police integrity and enhancing it in their organizations.

Safety-I and Safety-II - The Past and Future of Safety Management (Paperback, New Ed): Erik Hollnagel Safety-I and Safety-II - The Past and Future of Safety Management (Paperback, New Ed)
Erik Hollnagel
R1,470 Discovery Miles 14 700 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Safety has traditionally been defined as a condition where the number of adverse outcomes was as low as possible (Safety-I). From a Safety-I perspective, the purpose of safety management is to make sure that the number of accidents and incidents is kept as low as possible, or as low as is reasonably practicable.

This means that safety management must start from the manifestations of the absence of safety and that - paradoxically - safety is measured by counting the number of cases where it fails rather than by the number of cases where it succeeds. This unavoidably leads to a reactive approach based on responding to what goes wrong or what is identified as a risk - as something that could go wrong. Focusing on what goes right, rather than on what goes wrong, changes the definition of safety from ’avoiding that something goes wrong’ to ’ensuring that everything goes right’. More precisely, Safety-II is the ability to succeed under varying conditions, so that the number of intended and acceptable outcomes is as high as possible. From a Safety-II perspective, the purpose of safety management is to ensure that as much as possible goes right, in the sense that everyday work achieves its objectives.

This means that safety is managed by what it achieves (successes, things that go right), and that likewise it is measured by counting the number of cases where things go right. In order to do this, safety management cannot only be reactive, it must also be proactive. But it must be proactive with regard to how actions succeed, to everyday acceptable performance, rather than with regard to how they can fail, as traditional risk analysis does.

This book analyses and explains the principles behind both approaches and uses this to consider the past and future of safety management practices. The analysis makes use of common examples and cases from domains such as aviation, nuclear power production, process management and health care.

Architecture, State Modernism And Cultural Nationalism In The Apartheid Capital (Paperback): Hilton Judin Architecture, State Modernism And Cultural Nationalism In The Apartheid Capital (Paperback)
Hilton Judin 1
R1,172 Discovery Miles 11 720 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

This book is the first comprehensive investigation of the architecture of the apartheid state in the period of rapid economic growth and political repression from 1957 to 1966 when buildings took on an ideological role that was never remote from the increasingly dominant administrative, legislative and policing mechanisms of the regime. It considers how this process reflected the usurpation of a regional modernism and looks to contribute to wider discourses on international postwar modernism in architecture.

Buildings in Pretoria that came to embody ambitions of the apartheid state for industrialisation and progress serve as case studies. These were widely acclaimed projects that embodied for apartheid officials the pursuit of modernisation but carried latent apprehensions of Afrikaners about their growing economic prospects and cultural estrangement in Africa. It is a less known and marginal story due to the dearth of material and documents buried in archives and untranslated documents. Many of the documents, drawings and photographs in the book are unpublished and include classified material and photographs from the National Nuclear Research Centre, negatives of 1960s from Pretoria News and documents and pamphlets from Afrikaner Broederbond archives.

State architecture became the most iconic public manifestation of an evolving expression of white cultural identity as a new generation of architects in Pretoria took up the challenge of finding form to their prospects and beliefs. It was an opportunistic faith in Afrikaners who urgently needed to entrench their vulnerable and contested position on the African continent. The shift from provincial town to apartheid capital was swift and relentless. Little was left to stand in the way of the ambitions and aim of the state as people were uprooted and forcibly relocated, structures torn down and block upon block of administration towers and slabs erected across Pretoria.

This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of architectural history as well as those with an interest in postcolonial studies, political science and social anthropology.

Gender Trouble (Paperback, New ed): Judith Butler Gender Trouble (Paperback, New ed)
Judith Butler 1
R573 Discovery Miles 5 730 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

One of the most talked-about scholarly works of the past fifty years, Judith Butler's Gender Trouble is as celebrated as it is controversial. Arguing that traditional feminism is wrong to look to a natural, 'essential' notion of the female, or indeed of sex or gender, Butler starts by questioning the category 'woman' and continues in this vein with examinations of 'the masculine' and 'the feminine'. Best known however, but also most often misinterpreted, is Butler's concept of gender as a reiterated social performance rather than the expression of a prior reality. Thrilling and provocative, few other academic works have roused passions to the same extent.

Child And Adolescent Development - An Expanded Focus For Public Health In Africa (Paperback): Mark Tomlinson, Charlotte Hanlon,... Child And Adolescent Development - An Expanded Focus For Public Health In Africa (Paperback)

R519 R405 Discovery Miles 4 050 Save R114 (22%) Ships in 5 - 10 working days

Global public health has improved vastly during the past 25 years, and especially in the survival of infants and young children. However, many of these children, particularly in Africa, continue to live in poverty and in unhealthy, unsupportive environments, and will not be able to meet their developmental potential. In other words, they will survive but not thrive. The UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) stress sustainable development, not just survival and disease reduction, and the Global Strategy for Women’s, Children’s and Adolescents’ Health proposes a Survive (end preventable deaths), Thrive (ensure health and wellbeing) and Transform (expand enabling environments) agenda. For children to thrive they must make good developmental progress from birth until the end of adolescence.

Addressing the social determinants of developmental problems, this volume offers a broad, contextualised understanding of the factors that impact on children and adolescents in Africa. Unlike other works on the subject it is Africa-wide in its scope, with case studies in Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, Rwanda and South Africa. Covering mental health as well as physical and social development, it looks at policies and practice, culture and priorities for research, identifying challenges and proposing solutions.

Recommended for academics, students and practitioners in psychology, including developmental psychology, child clinical psychology, developmental psychopathology, psychiatry, human ecology, and in schools of education. It will also be of interest to nurses and paediatricians, health workers and those interested in early childhood development.

In this revised and updated edition of a modern classic, Bryant Myers shows how Christian mission can contribute to dismantling poverty and social evil. Integrating the best principles and practice of the international development community, the thinking and experience of Christian nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), and a theological framework for transformational development, Myers demonstrates what is possible when we cease to treat the spiritual and physical domains of life as separate and unrelated.

R1,216 Discovery Miles 12 160 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

First released in 2007, the bestselling Transport Revolutions argued that land transport in the first half of the 21st century will feature at least two revolutions. One will involve the use of electric drives rather than internal combustion engines. Another will involve powering many of these drives directly from the electric grid - as trains and trolley buses are powered today - rather than from on-board fuel. Now available for the first time in paperback and updated with the most recent data, it sets out the challenges to our growing dependence on transport fuelled by low-priced oil. These challenges include an early peak in world oil production and profound climate change resulting in part from oil use. It proposes responses to ensure effective, secure movement of people and goods in ways that make the best use of renewable sources of energy while minimizing environmental impacts. Synthesizing engineering, economics, environment, organization, policy and technology in a detailed yet highly readable style, Transport Revolutions is essential reading for anyone working, studying or interested in transport and the environment.
