The human lumbopelvic area has become the focus of a considerable amount of new and intriguing research relevant to effective diagnosis and treatment of low back pain. Back function has recently been studied from a broader perspective, including the analysis of the coupled function in spine, pelvis and legs. These approaches lead to new questions about dynamic stability and motor control in general, and specifically about the spine and pelvis. These new insights obviously imply new approaches in the prevention and treatment of low back pain and pelvic pain. Unique to this book is its in-depth coverage of this subject area by a team of international contributors who represent the broad range of professionals involved in clinical research and therapy. These experts cover a vast area of lumbopelvic experience, from effective treatment and rehabilitation to epidemiology, anatomy, biomechanics, pain and motor control, surgery and manual therapy. Evidence -based focus Final conclusions including perspectives with each chapter Each chapter is relevant and up to date New high profile contributors Updated references Introduction and closure for each chapter Special attention given to stability and muscle function

Even the brightest lights grow dim if they are not attended, and the great old torch-bearers and their works needs refreshment. After Nicaise all the Europeans, except the English speaking people, had new editions and translations of Guy's Major Surgery. With this translation of Nicaise's edition, all of the eight seminal treatises by the surgeons who brought surgery anew into Europe now are available to the English-Reader. The long discursive Introductions and footnotes by Nicaise and Joubert, and footnotes and explanatory insertions by this translator supplement Guy's text with a fine history of French surgery. Indeed, as Nicaise wrote in the historical Introduction to his edition of Pierre Franco, if we were to combine the introductions in his editions of Henri de Mondeville, Pierre Franco, and Guy de Chauliac with Malgaigne's Introduction to his edition of Ambroise Pare, we will have a complete history of European Surgery before the modern era. Guy's era was that of the Great Plague, and his book was written after its first invasion. His respectful attitude toward his colleagues and his suave gentility secured him as an officer of the Church, and as a Surgeon for The Popes at Avignon.

For the thousands of people affected by severe obesity, the decision to undergo weight loss surgery can be a matter of life and death. But it is not a simple procedure. That's why, for many, the decision does not come easily. To help you make the best possible choice, a dynamic team of experts have come together to share their experience, knowledge, and findings about these procedures. Merle Cantor Goldberg is one of this country's leading psychotherapists specializing in eating disorders; Drs. Cowan and Marcus have helped develop many of the techniques used in bariatric surgery, and have also taught these procedures to hundreds of other surgeons. "Weight Loss Surgery begins by asking important questions that must be considered before any decision is made. It then presents a comprehensive overview of pre-op visits, the various weight loss surgeries available, and the post-op recovery period, examining both the psychological and the physical impacts of the surgery. Weight loss surgery is not a minor procedure, but when appropriate, it can save lives. This thoughtful book offers the information you need to make the decision that's right for you.

The philosophy of management of skeletal tuberculosis has been greatly influenced by the availability of effective antitubercular drugs, facility of modern imaging modalities for diagnosis at predestructive stages of disease, and changes in the socioeconomic status of the people. Techniques have evolved to retain and restore the mobility of articular disease. The looming challenge of ""super-bugs"" has been addressed with possible modalities to combat it by immunopotentiating techniques. The sixth edition is a compilation of the personal clinical experience of the author and relevant information from the international literature. Many new pictures have been added mostly as ""composites"" to express the story as it evolves in clinical management. This book is a source of knowledge of biological processes of activity and healing of disease, and for rational options for effective and safe management of tuberculosis of the skeletal system. This book will guide the learner to master the concepts in tuberculosis of the skeletal system. Includes most recent information on the subject along with philosophy behind investigations and treatment of musculoskeletal tuberculosis. Biomaterials for Surgical Operation offers a review of the latest advances made in developing bioabsorbable devices for surgical operations which include surgical adhesives (sealants), barriers for the prevention of tissue adhesion, polymers for fractured bone fixation, growth factors for the promotion of wound healing, and sutures. Over the years, many descriptions of biomaterials have appeared in academic journals and books, but most of them have been devoted to limited clinical areas. This is in marked contrast with this volume which covers a wide range of bioabsorbable devices used in surgery from a practical point of view. The currently applied polymeric devices are critical in surgery, but all involve serious problems due to their poor performance. For instance, fibrin glue, the most widely used surgical sealant, can produce only a weak gel with low adhesive strength to tissues, accentuating the limited effectiveness of current treatment options. Likewise, the currently available barrier membranes cannot fully prevent tissue adhesion at the acceptable level and are, moreover, not easy to handle with endoscopes due to their poor mechanical properties. Biomaterials for Surgical Operation is aimed at those who are interested in expanding their knowledge of how the problems associated with the currently used devices for surgical operation can be solved. It primarily focuses on the absorbable biomaterials which are the main components of these medical devices.

PNL is the gold standard for the management of large and/or otherwise complex renal stones. Since its introduction in the seventies PNL has undergone considerable evolution, mainly driven by the improvement in access techniques, endoscopic instrument technology, lithotripsy devices and drainage management. The conventional prone position for PNL has been challenged in the last two decades by a variety of modifications, including the supine and Galdakao-modified supine Valdivia positions, which make simultaneous retrograde working access to the collecting system possible and have proven anesthesiological advantages. The Galdakao-modified supine Valdivia position allowed the development of ECIRS (Endoscopic Combined IntraRenal Surgery), a technique exploiting a combined antegrade and retrograde approach to the upper urinary tract, using both rigid and flexible endoscopes with the related accessories. The synergistic teamwork of ECIRS provides a safe and efficient, minimally-invasive procedure for the treatment of all kinds of urolithiasis. The aim of this book is to share with the urologic community worldwide our experience, our standardization of all the steps, and tips and tricks for the procedure.
This book has been written step wise by enumerating various aspects of the importance of clinical examination derived by laying one's hands on the affected part. By a thorough clinical examination, it can help an individual to arrive at a tentative differential diagnosis of the condition and hence help in investigating the same by numerous tests which are relevant to the given condition. The manner in which a given case is handled in this way is far more important than the diagnosis of the condition and this feature comes with practicing the same many times. It is a must for anyone embarking in life on Orthopedics as a career.
Taking a multidisciplinary approach to a common and often frustrating problem for athletes and those with an active lifestyle, this book is the first of its kind, addressing muscular injuries to the posterior leg using an in-depth and expansive style that is uniquely dedicated to ensuring all content is explicitly linked to the practical care of patients with calf pain. It is divided thematically into three sections. The first section covers underlying principles involved in these issues, including anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology of injury and neurophysiology of musculoskeletal pain. Clinical assessment techniques and imaging are covered in the second section. The third section on treatment is the most expansive, discussing acute, sub-acute and chronic posterior leg muscle injuries, as well as surgical management, rehabilitation techniques, complementary medicine and special populations. Overall, the book is designed to use muscular injuries of the posterior leg to as a means to understand the assessment and treatment of muscular injuries more broadly. Taken together, it is the consummate source for orthopedists, doctors in sports medicine, podiatrists, rehabilitation professionals and primary care physicians who treat muscular injuries in the posterior leg, though reader will gain a conceptual and practical framework for the assessment and treatment of muscular injuries in general.
