With a long practice of organ transplantation, retransplantation has become a major goal in patients with long-term failure of their first transplant (chronic rejection, exhaustion of the transplant, recurrence of the initial disease, etc. ). As a consequence of this upgrading, conclusions drawn about the status and hence the management of this uncommon condition have been increasingly extended to other patients with much more common forms of disability. Three years later, in December, 2008, surgeons at the Cleveland Clinic announced they had performed the first U.S. face transplant.
