A DAILY MAIL BOOK OF THE WEEK 'Spare Parts is a fascinating read filled with adventure, delight and surprise' RAHUL JANDIAL, surgeon author of 'Life on a Knife's Edge' 'This is a joyful romp through a fascinating slice of medical history' WENDY MOORE, author of 'The Knife Man' _______________________________________________________________ How did an architect help pioneer blood transfusion in the 1660s? Why did eighteenth-century dentists buy the live teeth of poor children? And what role did a sausage skin and an enamel bath play in making kidney transplants a reality? We think of transplant surgery as one of the medical wonders of the modern world. But transplant surgery is as ancient as the pyramids, with a history more surprising than we might expect. Paul Craddock takes us on a journey - from sixteenth-century skin grafting to contemporary stem cell transplants - uncovering stories of operations performed by unexpected people in unexpected places. Bringing together philosophy, science and cultural history, Spare Parts explores how transplant surgery constantly tested the boundaries between human, animal and machine, and continues to do so today. Witty, entertaining and at times delightfully macabre, Spare Parts shows us that the history - and future - of transplant surgery is tied up with questions about not only who we are, but also what we are, and what we might become. . .
Critically ill paediatric transfers have expanded rapidly over the past ten years and, as such, the need for transfer teams to recognise, understand and treat the various illnesses that they encounter is greater than ever. This highly illustrated book covers a multitude of clinical presentations in a case-based format to allow an authentic feel to the transfer process. Written by clinicians with experience in thousands of transfers, it brings together many years of experience from a world-renowned hospital. Following the case from initial presentation, to resuscitation and referral and finally with the transfer itself; the book explores the clinical stabilisation, human factors decisions and logistical challenges that are encountered every day by these teams. Following the entire journey, this is an ideal resource for all professionals who may be involved in critical care transfer and retrieval medicine, particularly those working in paediatrics, emergency medicine, anaesthesiology, intensive care, or pre-hospital settings.

Communication and Information Technology has been used to support
older and disabled people for over thirty years and there have been
many successes in this field. Until recently, research has largely
concentrated on people with physical or sensory dysfunction;
computer technology has been increasingly used to support cognitive
activities in able bodied people but its use to support people with
disabilities has not had much widespread recognition. Yet
well-designed C and IT systems have great potential to enhance the
quality of life and independence of people with cognitive
dysfunction, by: enabling them to retain a higher level of
independence and control over their lives, providing appropriate
levels of monitoring and supervision of 'at risk' people, without
violating privacy, keeping people intellectually and physically
active, and providing communications methods to reduce social
isolation.
Outcome Measures in Orthopaedic Trauma is a combined new edition of the successful Outcome Measures in Orthopaedics and Outcome Measures in Trauma that were the first books devoted to the topic of outcome measures for orthopedic trauma surgeons and researchers. The ability to measure results is vital for effective medical practice, particularly in view of the increased emphasis on evidence-based medicine and the introduction of the NICE guidelines. Evaluation of the success of failure of treatment is not only of importance to the patient and practitioner, but also to the health administrator as health care costs increase. Orthopedic and orthopedic trauma are highly complex subjects that can prove difficult to quantify, but accurate measurement is required for setting standards of care and for assessing the severity of an injury. Outcome Measures in Orthopaedics and Orthopaedic Trauma helps the clinician fulfil his or her role in the outcome assessment by providing good references to sources of instruments and techniques used and assisting them in making an informed selection from the different scoring systems available. It will be of interest to orthopaedic and trauma surgeons as well as emergency personnel and lawyers, researchers and hospital administrators working in this area.
Use of the transcervical approach in thoracic surgery has advanced significantly during the past 60 years, owing primarily to advances in technology. Nevertheless, the possibilities of this approach have never been compiled in a systematic way. This book aims to rectify the situation by describing, in a structured way, all the thoracic procedures that can be performed using the transcervical approach. Indications and contraindications, surgical techniques, complications, and results are all covered, based on the authors experience and published reports. The contents encompass diverse surgical endoscopic procedures for diagnosis and staging, use of the transcervical approach for surgery to the thymus and mediastinum, lungs and bronchi, trachea and esophagus and miscellaneous items including the role of robotic surgery."
Overuse injuries of the musculoskeletal system are common occurrences. Yet most existing volumes on cumulative trauma disorders deal with the subject from an ergonomic and occupational therapy standpoint, and do not provide the all-encompassing synopsis that physicians demand.
The Viva Voce is a particularly difficult element of the MRCS exam since candidates will be tested across a broad range of topics in surgery, pathology, critical care and basic science, and also as candidates are unsure what to expect, or how to prepare for such an exam. Questions for the MRCS Viva is an essential guide to sitting and passing the Viva Voce part of the MRCS exam. Each subject area offers 20-30 questions, which follow a conversational pattern where new questions follow logically from previous answers - exactly as one would expect in the exam itself. Written by recently qualified surgeons who are now actively involved in the teaching and support of new trainees, this book is the closest a candidate will get to being a fly on the wall in a Viva Voce examination.

Operative procedures performed directly on the base of the brain, inner ear, and cranial nerves are inherently delicate undertakings further complicated by the difficulty of achieving easy access to this confined space. Written by pioneers working at one of the world's leading centers for advanced neurosurgery, An Atlas of Skull Base Surgery clearly describes the steps by which each of the key anatomical structures at the skull base and inner ear may be accessed in order to perform advanced surgical interventions.

What are the indications for necrosectomy? How you perform an EUA for acute peri-anal sepsis? What do you understand by the term Early Goal-Directed Therapy (EGDT)? Remember: this is a consultant's exam, and giving a range of options is not good enough. You must tell the examiner what you as a consultant are going to do. The FRCS is a uniquely challenging prospect; highly detailed, wide-ranging and encompassing both theory and practice. Preparation for this exam can be very difficult, and resources tailored to it are scarce. As the consolidated notes of a recent successful candidate, this book is an essential resource when preparing for the viva. The wide variety of questions require you to define, diagnose or choose between treatment options, while MCQs and SBAs help you to objectively evaluate your progress - a unique supplement to your study plan. Answers provided are comprised of an invaluable combination of detailed written answers and lists that will remind you of key points and help you structure your preparation.
