In this updated edition of the German-language title "Neue
Techniken - Kniechirugie", Professor Paessler, an experienced knee
surgeon, provides a state-of-the-art survey of the field. In doing
so he describes, among other techniques, how to reconstruct the
anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), perform ACL revision surgery,
manage a recent posterior cruciate ligament tear, treat cartilage
lesions with microfracturing, reattach/replace detached cartilage
fragment, perform a dome high tibial osteotomy. Professor Paessler
is author of more than 150 publications (books and journals) and
editor-in-chief of the "European Journal of Sports Traumatology and
Related Research". This is an important resource for all trauma and
orthopaedic surgeons and trainees.
The new edition of this practical text presents a clear anatomic
approach to locating the needle insertion site for EMG. Succinct
descriptions are provided for 71 routinely tested muscles, and each
is accompanied by a full-page drawing of the muscle and related
anatomy. Many new cross-sectional drawings have been added to
further delineate the anatomy. Guidelines have been expanded
throughout to include more detail. There are also more pearls,
additional tips on avoiding pitfalls, and anatomical and clinical
descriptions. Teaching points have been expanded and replace the
previous "notes" from the first edition. The text is in outline
format and indicates peripheral and nerve root innervations and
patient positioning.
The use of human tissue for transplantation is becoming a billion-dollar business. This book is the first comprehensive exploration of the American tissue transplantation industry. It traces the chain of distribution of musculoskeletal tissue (e.g. bones and ligaments) and skin from the generous donation of grieving families to its transplantation into hundreds of thousands of persons each year. Commodification, commercialization, and the occasional use of tissue for "cosmetic" surgery have raised ethical questions about the acceptability of "markets" in human body parts that have been altruistically donated by families. Inevitably, questions about the informed consent and the need for responsible stewardship by the industry have been raised, often in the Press. The book provides a comprehensive background to these ethical problems by explaining the historical development, breadth, and organization of the tissue industry, including the technical developments that have made it simultaneously clinically relevant and an attractive market for investment capital. It explores the similarities and differences in how government regulates other tissues and solid organs (such as hearts and kidneys). Contributions to the book come from an interdisciplinary group of scholars, industry representatives, government regulators, and, not least, families who have donated tissue from their dead loved ones.
Produced in association with the American Society of
Transplantation, this new edition is full of practical advice for
the next generation of transplant professionals. In addition to 5
organ-specific chapters: kidney, pancreas, heart, lung and liver,
the book includes essential information on: * immunobiology *
pharmacology * donor management * infectious complications *
pediatric transplantation * general principles of patient
management Fully updated and redesigned to make it even more
user-friendly, the book now contains clinical vignettes, key point
boxes, and self-assessment multiple choice questions in each
chapter. Primer on Transplantation, Third Edition is an invaluable
resource for all health professionals in the transplant team
including trainees, residents, fellows, physicians, surgeons,

The purpose of this book is to contribute to basic and clinical
medical research on cochlear implants for inner ear malformation
and cochlear nerve deficiency. Cochlear implantation for children
is performed worldwide, and the outcomes concerning speech and
hearing acquisition are epoch-making. However, there are some
difficulties associated with applying this operative treatment to
patients who have complicated inner ear malformations or cochlear
nerve deficiencies that have slowed the development of their
speech, hearing, and/or sense of balance. The first part of the
book outlines the fundamental aspects of inner ear maldevelopment
to facilitate readers' understanding of cochlear implantation from
the point of view of embryology, morphology, and genetics. In turn,
the second part describes current clinical cases and presents
successful clinical reports. The book offers a primary resource for
otolaryngologists, neurologists, and pediatricians with an interest
in this field.

This volume provides a concise yet comprehensive overview on
surgical procedures performed on the cirrhotic patient. The text
explains the underlying pathophysiologic alterations in liver
disease and cirrhosis, provides assessment of disease severity and
risk factors, and helps to predict potential outcomes based on the
nature of the operation. Operations discussed in detail include
bariatric surgery, colorectal surgery, hepatic surgery, kidney
transplantation, gynecological procedures, neurosurgical
procedures, and ophthalmic surgery. The book is also supplemented
with instructive color illustrations and tables. Written by experts
in the field, Surgical Procedures on the Cirrhotic Patient is a
valuable, multidisciplinary resource for clinicians who treat the
cirrhotic patient. With a Foreword by Thomas E. Starzl, the father
of liver transplantation.
Gynaecological practice has changed fundamentally in the last three
decades and a large proportion of major pelvic operations has been
replaced by minimally invasive approaches. This book will cover
minimally invasive approaches in all aspects of gynaecology
including general gynaecology, oncology, urogynaecology and
reproductive medicine. The chapters are written at a level
appropriate for trainees/residents and general gynaecology
specialists but enough details and additional resources will be
provided for those who require further information. Specific aim of
the book is to provide direct to the point surgical pearls which
can be adapted to the daily practice instantly by the target
audience. The book includes chapters on relevant surgical anatomy,
principles of MIS, management of camera systems, video/image
editing, initiating a successful MIS practice, improving efficiency
of current MIS program, how to develop successful teaching
techniques in academic setting, avoiding & managing MIS related
surgical complications and preoperative/postoperative care before
covering MIS for individual conditions including intensive care
managements. Chapters are written by world renown authorities. ACOG
guideline recently published a statement recommending vaginal
hysterectomy and endoscopic hysterectomy should be considered as a
first step of surgical choice. Current practice has been shifting
from open cases to laparoscopic/ robotic assisted cases while
vaginal cases stays steady. This shift has created an urge among
gynaecologists to learn, improve or adapt laparoscopic/ robotic
techniques in their practice.
