Kinematic MRI of the Joints - Functional Anatomy, Kinesiology, and Clinical Applications (Hardcover): Frank G. Shellock,... Kinematic MRI of the Joints - Functional Anatomy, Kinesiology, and Clinical Applications (Hardcover)
Frank G. Shellock, Christopher Powers
R5,114 Discovery Miles 51 140 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Kinematic MRI refers to imaging a joint through a range of motion to examine the interactions between the soft tissue and osseous anatomy that comprise the joint. Kinematic MRI techniques were developed because various pathologic conditions are dependent on the specific position of the joint or in response to loading or stress. Importantly, static-view MRI examinations often miss abnormal findings because the joint is not assessed through a range of motion. Accordingly, the functional information obtained using kinematic MRI frequently serves to identify the underlying abnormality or to supplement the information acquired with standard MR imaging techniques.

Kinematic MRI of the Joints is the first textbook on this important, emerging clinical MRI application. For each joint, it presents pertinent functional anatomy, kinesiology, and clinical information; describes the kinematic MRI protocol and technique; explains the normal kinematics; and provides a thorough presentation of the pathokinematics. Multiple case examples illustrate the usefulness of kinematic MRI of the joints for diagnosis or elucidation of pathologic conditions.

Each section of this book is co-authored by an leading musculoskeletal radiologist orthopedic surgeon as well as by an academic-based physical therapist/biomechanist.

The Courage to Fail - A Social View of Organ Transplants and Dialysis (Paperback, New Ed): Judith P. Swazey The Courage to Fail - A Social View of Organ Transplants and Dialysis (Paperback, New Ed)
Judith P. Swazey
R1,393 Discovery Miles 13 930 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The title of this profound work conveys the bold, uncertain, and often dangerous adventure in which medical professionals and their organ transplant and dialysis patients are engaged. Built around a series of case studies developed through years of first-hand ethnographic research, The Courage to Fail is the product of collaborative first-hand research concerned with various social phenomena generated by transplantation and dialysis and also by the development and deployment of an artificial heart. The authors examine the individuals involved and the workings and atmosphere of some of the medical centers in which these forms of therapy have been developed. They examine "gift-exchange" dimensions of transplantation: the transcendent and tyrannical aspects of the "gift of life" that transplants entail for donors and recipients -- and for medical professionals as well. They also analyze the dilemma of uncertainty inherent in medicine, which occurs with particular force in the development of such experimental techniques.

Since publication of the original edition, the authors have continued to follow social and medical developments surrounding organ transplants and dialysis. In their new introduction, they discuss transplantation as a gift of life, how death is defined and when it occurs, efforts to procure more organs, and organ allocation and issues of equity. This book will be of interest to physicians, medical students, medical sociologists, and anyone interested in the history of and issues surrounding organ replacement.

Todd A. Kuiken, Aimee E. Schultz Feuser, Ann K. Barlow
R1,846 Discovery Miles 18 460 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Implement TMR with Your Patients and Improve Their Quality of Life Developed by Dr. Todd A. Kuiken and Dr. Gregory A. Dumanian, targeted muscle reinnervation (TMR) is a new approach to accessing motor control signals from peripheral nerves after amputation and providing sensory feedback to prosthesis users. This practical approach has many advantages over other neural-machine interfaces for the improved control of artificial limbs. Targeted Muscle Reinnervation: A Neural Interface for Artificial Limbs provides a template for the clinical implementation of TMR and a resource for further research in this new area of science. After describing the basic scientific concepts and key principles underlying TMR, the book presents surgical approaches to transhumeral and shoulder disarticulation amputations. It explores the possible role of TMR in the prevention and treatment of end-neuromas and details the principles of rehabilitation, prosthetic fitting, and occupational therapy for TMR patients. The book also describes transfer sensation and discusses the surgical and functional outcomes of the first several TMR patients. It concludes with emerging research on using TMR to further improve the function and quality of life for people with limb loss. With contributions from renowned leaders in the field, including Drs. Kuiken and Dumanian, this book is a useful guide to implementing TMR in patients with high-level upper limb amputations. It also supplies the foundation to enable improvements in TMR techniques and advances in prosthetic technology.

A Concise Guide to Intraoperative Monitoring (Hardcover): George Zouridakis, Andrew C. Papanicolaou A Concise Guide to Intraoperative Monitoring (Hardcover)
George Zouridakis, Andrew C. Papanicolaou
R4,502 Discovery Miles 45 020 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Covering both the applications and the related theory, A Concise Guide to Intraoperative Monitoring provides a general but comprehensive introduction to IOM. Unlike existing texts that typically report the results of specific studies, this book presents comprehensive coverage of the entire procedure, as well as the specific protocols used in hospital practice, examples of typical recordings, possible problems, and recommended solutions. At the end of each chapter the author poses several questions for review. These questions help technologists and medical residents in their preparation for the board exams. Taken together, these features make the book an ideal reference or training manual.

A Concise Guide to Intraoperative Monitoring begins by discussing the basic principles underlying the generation of bioelectrical signals. It then describes the electronic equipment and the various electrophysiological procedures involved in IOM. From this foundation, the book gradually advances to more specific topics, such as surgical procedures, neuronal structures at risk, the optimum combinations of tests to administer, and the proper interpretation of test results. The material
also provides you with a background on general anesthesia and analyzes the effects of various drugs on electrophysiological recordings. A Concise Guide to Intraoperative Monitoring also discusses the proper placement of stimulation and recording electrodes, as well as intervention strategies and equipment troubleshooting.

Surgery of Skull Base Meningiomas - With a Chapter on Pathology by G. F. Walter (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original... Surgery of Skull Base Meningiomas - With a Chapter on Pathology by G. F. Walter (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1992)
Madjid Samii, Mario Ammirati
R3,091 Discovery Miles 30 910 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Although surgery of the skull base still represents a frontier involving different specialties, it is increasingly being accepted and recognized as a special area po sing both unique diagnostic and surgical challenges and specific requirements. This is the prime reason that colleagues involved in the management of skull base processes need special training stressing the different surgical approaches required either at different times or to reach the different areas of this intriguing anatomi cal landmark. Although the advent of microsurgical techniques and advanced diagnostic mo dalities - high-resolution computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and MR-angiography, and supers elective endovascular protocols - in the last 25 years has brought significant improvements, such as the recent advances in endovascular treatment, a number of different kinds of limitations still persist. This is especially so in the case of skull base meningiomas, the pathological entity most frequently affecting this area which the neurosurgeon is confronted with in daily practice. Besides understanding the intrinsic characteristics of the different pathological entities which involve the skull base, it is the responsibility of physi cians to know and employ the expanded neurosurgical options in the most effecti ve and appropriate way.

Microplasma Sprayed Hydroxyapatite Coatings (Paperback): Arjun Dey, Anoop Kumar Mukhopadhyay Microplasma Sprayed Hydroxyapatite Coatings (Paperback)
Arjun Dey, Anoop Kumar Mukhopadhyay
R2,591 Discovery Miles 25 910 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

There has been enormous growth in the use of medical implants. However, in the case of hip replacement, loosening of metallic prosthesis fixed with polymethylmethylacrylate bone cement has resulted in painstaking revision surgery, which is a major problem for the patient, surgeon, and biomedical technology itself. In fact, global recognition of this problem led to the development of cementless fixation through the novel introduction of a bioactive hydroxyapatite (HAp) coating on biomedical-grade metallic implants. Since then, a wide variety of coating methods have evolved to make the HAp coatings on metallic implants more reliable. Microplasma Sprayed Hydroxyapatite Coatings discusses plasma spraying and other related HAp coating techniques, focusing on the pros and cons of macroplasma sprayed (MAPS)- and microplasma sprayed (MIPS)-HAp coatings. The book begins by explaining what a biomaterial really is, what the frequently used term biocompatibility stands for, and why it is so important for biomaterials to be biocompatible. It then: Examines the structural, chemical, macromechanical, micro/nanomechanical, and tribological properties and residual stress of HAp coatings Evaluates the efficacies under simulated body fluid immersion for MAPS- and MIPS-HAp coatings developed on biomedical implant-grade SS316L substrates Offers a comprehensive survey of state-of-the-art in vivo studies of MIPS-HAp coatings, presenting the results of pioneering research related to bone defect fixation Shedding light on the future scope and possibilities of MIPS-HAp coatings, Microplasma Sprayed Hydroxyapatite Coatings provides a valuable reference for students, researchers, and practitioners of biomedical engineering and materials science.

Congenital Thoracic Wall Deformities - Diagnosis, Therapy and Current Developments (Hardcover, Edition.): Anton H. Schwabegger Congenital Thoracic Wall Deformities - Diagnosis, Therapy and Current Developments (Hardcover, Edition.)
Anton H. Schwabegger
R6,503 Discovery Miles 65 030 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

These congenital deformities, funnel or keel chest deformities, as well as Poland syndromes, affect a small group of patients who suffer from aesthetic rather than functional impairment. The wide variety of diagnoses and recommended therapies, mostly surgical procedures, can be very confusing for patients, their parents, physicians and surgeons. In recent years several techniques have been refined and developed to deal with these complex problems, and surgeons with different specialties have been operating on these deformities, mostly as lonely experts in their respective fields.

This book should not be seen as an operation atlas but more as a compact survey of a small group of medical conditions and the need for flexible options for an individual therapeutic approach, based on the combined experience of different international specialists. Thus the book is designed for obstetricians, pediatricians, physicians and surgical specialists alike.

Biomechanics for Life - Introduction to Sanomechanics (Hardcover, Edition.): Mark R. Pitkin Biomechanics for Life - Introduction to Sanomechanics (Hardcover, Edition.)
Mark R. Pitkin
R2,896 Discovery Miles 28 960 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The reader will find in this book a new approach to improving health. The author has called this approach “sanomechanics,” combining the Latin sanus (healthy, sound) and mechanicus (science of the motion of bodies subjected to forces). The focus of sanomechanics is on exercising with an understanding of the biomechanical consequences of the actions. This understanding is based on the author’s theory of the floating skeleton, which postulates a hydraulic connection of synovial joints. The theory explains the greater or lesser success of any exercise utilizing the ability of the human skeleton to absorb and transform forces and moments from the body segments and the environment. This ability vanishes with age and illnesses, and the deeper our understanding of the nature of skeletal functioning is, the better we shall be able to improve, protect, and prolong the skeleton’s health.
