Ungrading - Why Rating Students Undermines Learning (and What to Do Instead) (Paperback): Susan D. Blum Ungrading - Why Rating Students Undermines Learning (and What to Do Instead) (Paperback)
Susan D. Blum; Foreword by Alfie Kohn
R744 R608 Discovery Miles 6 080 Save R136 (18%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The moment is right for critical reflection on what has been assumed to be a core part of schooling. In Ungrading, fifteen educators write about their diverse experiences going gradeless. Some contributors are new to the practice and some have been engaging in it for decades. Some are in humanities and social sciences, some in STEM fields. Some are in higher education, but some are the K-12 pioneers who led the way. Based on rigorous and replicated research, this is the first book to show why and how faculty who wish to focus on learning, rather than sorting or judging, might proceed. It includes honest reflection on what makes ungrading challenging, and testimonials about what makes it transformative.

Teaching and Learning in a Community of Thinking - The Third Model (Hardcover, 2014 ed.): Yoram Harpaz Teaching and Learning in a Community of Thinking - The Third Model (Hardcover, 2014 ed.)
Yoram Harpaz
R2,658 Discovery Miles 26 580 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book explores a new pedagogical model called The Third Model, which places the encounter between the child and the curriculum at the center of educational theory and practice. The Third Model is implemented in an alternative classroom called Community of Thinking. Teaching and learning in a Community of Thinking is based on three "stations": the fertile question; research; and concluding performance. The essence of a Community of Thinking is the formation of a group of students and teachers who grapple with a troubling question to which they do not know the answer at the outset and sometimes even at the end of their investigation. The Community of Thinking framework is supported by a whole school model the Intel-Lect School. The model, or parts of it, is currently implemented in schools in Israel, England, Australia, and New Zealand.

The book suggests a new pedagogical narrative based on alternative "atomic pictures" of learning, teaching, knowledge, mind and the aim of education, and a systematic pedagogical practice based on this narrative. ""

J. Michael Spector, Dirk Ifenthaler, Kinshuk
R4,235 Discovery Miles 42 350 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Instruction tailored to the individual student, learning and teaching outside the limits of time and space-ideas that were once considered science fiction are now educational reality, with the prospect of an intelligent Web 3.0 not far distant. Alongside these innovations exists an emerging set of critical-thinking challenges, as Internet users create content and learners (and teachers) take increased responsibility in their work. Learning and Instruction in the Digital Age nimbly balances the technological and pedagogical aspects of these rapid changes, gathering papers from noted researchers on a wealth of topics relating to cognitive approaches to learning and teaching, mental models, online learning, communications, and innovative educational technologies, among them:

  • Cognition and student-centered, Web-based learning,
  • The progression of mental models throughout a course of instruction,
  • Experiencing education with 3D virtual worlds,
  • Expanding educational boundaries through multi-school collaboration,
  • Adapting e-learning to different learning styles,
  • The student blog as reflective diary.

With its blend of timely ideas and forward thinking, Learning and Instruction in the Digital Age will enrich the work of researchers in educational psychology, educational technology, and cognitive science.

Rumors, Lies, and Whispers - Classroom Crush or Career Catastrophe? (Hardcover, New): Mary Ann Manos Rumors, Lies, and Whispers - Classroom Crush or Career Catastrophe? (Hardcover, New)
Mary Ann Manos
R2,035 Discovery Miles 20 350 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Teachers and others caught in false allegation misconduct are facing the decimation of their careers. This book is a survival plan for teachers, school administrators, and others working with young people. It details both proactive and reactive measures that the accused should know in the event of an allegation. This book will help them to know and to protect their rights. No one knows how many careers have been ended by students who intend retribution for reasons as varied as extortion, revenge, misplaced affection, or sheer malice. No data or studies have documented the extent of the problem. A few experts say false allegations never happen; others say it rarely happens. Yet false allegations are all too common. Educators and other professionals who work with young people know that such allegations can be career killers, yet their ruined lives often become silent statistics due to the stigma of shame surrounding the charges. This book looks at relevant law, policies, criminal investigation procedures, and problem behavior, offering an informative and easy-to-use guide that will assist practitioners, administrators, and anyone beginning a career with children and youth.

Corrective Feedback, Individual Differences and Second Language Learning (Hardcover, 2011 ed.): Younghee Sheen Corrective Feedback, Individual Differences and Second Language Learning (Hardcover, 2011 ed.)
Younghee Sheen
R4,121 Discovery Miles 41 210 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book explores current thinking about the role of corrective feedback in language learning and teaching. Corrective feedback is a topic that is of relevance to both theories of second language learning and language pedagogy.

Younghee Sheen, an Assistant Professor of Applied Linguistics at the American University in Washington D.C., offers a new perspective by reviewing a wide body of research on both oral and written corrective feedback and its contribution to second language acquisition. She also reports the results of her own study, pointing to the need to examine how individual factors such as anxiety and language aptitude mediate learners' ability to benefit from the oral and written feedback they receive.

This book is an important resource for students and scholars of applied linguistics and second language acquisition. It will also be of interest to language teachers and teacher educators wanting to deepen their understanding of error correction strategies in the classroom.

Serious Games Analytics - Methodologies for Performance Measurement, Assessment, and Improvement (Hardcover, 2015 ed.):... Serious Games Analytics - Methodologies for Performance Measurement, Assessment, and Improvement (Hardcover, 2015 ed.)
Christian Sebastian Loh, Yanyan Sheng, Dirk Ifenthaler
R5,633 Discovery Miles 56 330 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume brings together research on how gameplay data in serious games may be turned into valuable analytics or actionable intelligence for performance measurement, assessment, and improvement. Chapter authors use empirical research methodologies, including existing, experimental, and emerging conceptual frameworks, from various fields, such as: computer science software engineering educational data mining statistics information visualization. Serious games is an emerging field where the games are created using sound learning theories and instructional design principles to maximize learning and training success. But how would stakeholders know what play-learners have done in the game environment, and if the actions performance brings about learning? Could they be playing the game for fun, really learning with evidence of performance improvement, or simply gaming the system, i.e., finding loopholes to fake that they are making progress? This volume endeavors to answer these questions.

Creative Teaching - An Evidence-Based Approach (Hardcover, 2015 ed.): Dennis (Sale) Creative Teaching - An Evidence-Based Approach (Hardcover, 2015 ed.)
Dennis (Sale)
R3,559 R2,170 Discovery Miles 21 700 Save R1,389 (39%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book contains an evidence-based pedagogic guide to enable any motivated teaching/training professional to be able to teach effectively and creatively. It firstly summarises the extensive research field on human psychological functioning relating to learning and how this can be fully utilised in the design and facilitation of quality learning experiences. It then demonstrates what creativity actually 'looks like' in terms of teaching practices, modelling the underpinning processes of creative learning design and how to apply these in lesson planning. The book, having established an evidence-based and pedagogically driven approach to creative learning design, extensively focuses on key challenges facing teaching professionals today. These include utilising information technologies in blended learning formats, differentiating instruction, and developing self-directed learners who can think well. The main purpose of the book is to demystify what it means to teach creatively, explicitly demonstrating the principles of good pedagogic design and communication strategies that underpin such activity. The message is clear - creative teaching competence is both a highly useful and a learnable capability.

Curriculum Revolutions: A practical guide to enhancing what you teach (Paperback): Martin Robinson Curriculum Revolutions: A practical guide to enhancing what you teach (Paperback)
Martin Robinson
R545 Discovery Miles 5 450 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Curriculum Revolutions is a tool to assist schools in creating, building and maintaining a joined-up curriculum that is cohesive and coherent. Martin Robinson's unique curriculum wheel leads you through a continuous cycle of planning, designing, delivering, reflecting upon and reviewing your curriculum. The process will involve your managers, teachers and pupils, ensuring all understand the importance of a well-functioning curriculum as the cornerstone of the school and the quality of education it delivers. Good curriculum design is a collaborative affair, so each revolution of the wheel focuses on how to get staff working together productively. Most importantly, from a design point of view, Curriculum Revolutions explores the potential pitfalls in the curriculum shape that a school adopts, either consciously or unconsciously. Robinson argues that a sophisticated understanding of the underlying structure, or 'thought architecture', can make all the difference to the quality of the continuing, unfolding project of good curriculum design.

Talking to Teenagers: A guide to skilful classroom communication (Paperback): Jamie Thom Talking to Teenagers: A guide to skilful classroom communication (Paperback)
Jamie Thom
R595 Discovery Miles 5 950 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The success or failure of a teacher rests on one thing: the quality of their communication. In the microscope of the modern secondary classroom, everything we say and everything we do is analysed by our teenage audience. 'Talking to Teenagers' is a practical handbook that explores five essential communication strategies. It provides busy teachers with the scripts they need to improve learning, and form effective relationships with teenagers. The complexity of that teenage audience and their brain development is explored, followed by how we can master the art of non-verbal communication. The book also deconstructs how teachers can proactively teach positive behaviour, and script their responses to challenging situations in the classroom. The acronym LEAP is then used to ensure that discussion and dialogue in the classroom is impactful: sharing strategies to improve listening, hone quality explanations, analyse understanding, and structure effective independent practise. Finally, it explores how we can drive motivation and build habits in the teenagers we work with. If you feel your communication in the classroom is often on autopilot, this book will fuel you with the strategies, phrases and understanding that will help you to be the best version of yourself in the classroom.

Educational Algebra - A Theoretical and Empirical Approach (Hardcover, 2008 ed.): Eugenio Filloy, Teresa Rojano, Luis Puig Educational Algebra - A Theoretical and Empirical Approach (Hardcover, 2008 ed.)
Eugenio Filloy, Teresa Rojano, Luis Puig
R5,987 Discovery Miles 59 870 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book takes a theoretical perspective on the study of school algebra, in which both semiotics and history occur. The Methodological design allows for the interpretation of specific phenomena and the inclusion of evidence not addressed in more general treatments. The book gives priority to "meaning in use" over "formal meaning." These approaches and others of similar nature lead to a focus on competence rather than a user 's activity with mathematical language.

We Can Do This! - Student Mentor Texts That Teach and Inspire (Paperback): Janiel Wagstaff We Can Do This! - Student Mentor Texts That Teach and Inspire (Paperback)
Janiel Wagstaff
R791 Discovery Miles 7 910 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In We Can Do This! writing expert and Stella Writes author Janiel Wagstaff pairs examples of student writing with writing lessons. Student writing samples are extremely powerful tools for boosting the growth of young writers and the student samples provided in this book serve as mentor texts and the basis for each lesson. The samples are mentors that are "doable" for students: they highlight skills, strategies, craft moves, and traits within the reach of their intended audience. As teachers and students study the examples, they will think, "I can do that!" Additionally, samples that reflect the most common errors or trouble spots are included, enabling teachers to explicitly teach to these points.

Service Learning as Pedagogy in Early Childhood Education - Theory, Research, and Practice (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): Kelly L.... Service Learning as Pedagogy in Early Childhood Education - Theory, Research, and Practice (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Kelly L. Heider
R2,895 Discovery Miles 28 950 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book presents the most recent theory, research, and practice on service learning as it relates to early childhood education. It describes several service learning programs, many of which were developed to better prepare pre-service teachers for the challenges they face in today's early childhood classrooms, including class size, ever-changing technology, diversity, high-stakes testing, parental involvement (or the lack thereof), and shrinking budgets. The book shares stories of positive outcomes from pre-service teachers who, having participated in service-learning programs, report a shift in their attitudes and beliefs including an increased empathy for others, a heightened sensitivity to student differences, more democratic values, and a greater commitment to teaching. In addition, the book examines the effects of service learning and positive outcomes for children and teacher educators as well. Schools today face an increasing number of language learners, the mainstreaming of special population students, and working with a standards-driven curriculum. All of these present new challenges for teachers as they attempt to meet their students' educational needs. As a result of this new classroom environment, and the educational needs they present, teacher educators must now seek different approaches to prepare prospective teachers to meet these needs because the traditional approaches to teacher preparation, such as coursework independent of fieldwork, are no longer effective in equipping teachers to address these issues. This book examines in detail the new approach of service learning.

Much of what is known about teaching second language writing today has been based on research in English as a second language, writing in English in English-dominant countries and other contexts, without giving close consideration to the important work of teaching foreign language writing in many languages and contexts around the world. FOREIGN LANGUAGE WRITING INSTRUCTION: PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICES takes a significant step in addressing this imbalance by examining many of the topics that influence foreign language teaching. Fourteen chapters researched and authored by scholars working in nine different countries and regions explore the contexts of foreign language writing pedagogy, the diversity of national and regional approaches, the role of universities, departments, and programs in pedagogy, and the cognitive and classroom dimensions of teaching and learning. This volume provides a cross-section of the current status of foreign language writing instruction, while developing a fuller appreciation for the broadened perspectives that it can bring to second language writing. This book offers a detailed analysis and assessment of the state of education round the world. The argument is made that education and curriculum practices are deficient for two reasons. The first is the adoption by governments, policy-makers and practitioners of a set of knowledge practices that can be broadly characterised as empiricist and technicist, and which has come to dominate how curricula are constructed and certainly how education systems and their work can be described. The second is the adoption of a model of curriculum that is both backward-looking and, in its own terms, confused and muddled. This book then sets out an alternative model, which is more cogent and better focused on human wellbeing.
