Rootlines - A Memoir (Paperback): Rikki West Rootlines - A Memoir (Paperback)
Rikki West
R415 R390 Discovery Miles 3 900 Save R25 (6%) Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Rikki and her sister, Linda, fell out with one another four months ago. They are not speaking when Linda emails that she has lethal abdominal tumors, that her only hope of survival is a total bone marrow replacement. Linda claims Rikki is too old to donate, and explains there's only a slight chance she is a good match anyway-but Rikki refuses to accept that. Despite the wounding between them, Linda's email ignites a wild aspiration in her sister: she will become the perfect donor, the perfect match, with the healthiest, most vigorous cells possible. She rises with intent to heal herself, her sister, and their rootlines, the patterns formed in their family of origin that have quietly shaped their lives. Rikki walks through the science while confronting dogma that limits how mind can transform body. She builds herself into a stem cell factory using Muay Thai kickboxing and vegetarian nutrition. Working through childhood wounds and mental limits with meditation and yoga, she finds her own power, as well as ways to show up for Linda and walk with her from the edge of death to a new life. Together, the two sisters beat the lymphoma-and, as they rediscover the intimacy and love of their innocent childhood, heal the intertwined roots of their family pain.

Duck Jong Han, Takashi Kenmochi, Yi Ming Shyr
R2,658 Discovery Miles 26 580 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book is the first to provide a thorough overview of the experience of pancreas transplantation in Asian countries, including in particular Korea, Taiwan, and Japan. Recent trends are identified and attention drawn to differences in comparison with the United States and Europe. Such differences relate, for example, to the history of pancreas transplantation, the operative procedure, and the organ-sharing system. In addition, the insulin-secreting ability of pancreatic islet cells is thought to vary depending on race. Beyond these aspects, the coverage also encompasses ABO-incompatible living donor pancreas transplantation, which is very rarely performed elsewhere in the world. By introducing the number, technique, and outcomes of pancreas transplantation in Asian countries, the book will hopefully further stimulate the pancreas transplantation program in this region and beyond. It will be of value for all medical professionals in the field and will be informative for diabetic patients receiving insulin treatment in Asia.

Effective Public Health Policy in Organ Donation - Lessons from a Universal Public Health System in Brazil (Paperback, 1st ed.... Effective Public Health Policy in Organ Donation - Lessons from a Universal Public Health System in Brazil (Paperback, 1st ed. 2022)
Fabio Silveira, Arlene Terezinha Cagol Garcia Badoch
R1,235 Discovery Miles 12 350 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book shows how a successful public health policy designed to foster the culture of brain death diagnosis and improve the interaction between Organ Procurement Organizations and Intra-Hospital Organ and Tissue Donation Committees for Transplants led the Brazilian state of Parana to reach one of the highest rates of effective organ donors per million population in the world. Brazil has the largest public transplant system in the world, and each of the country's 26 states is responsible for organizing its own transplant system. The state of Parana, with 11 million inhabitants, has stood out in this regard in the last decade. It reached 47.7 effective donors per million population (pmp), performing better than countries such as the United States (33.3/pmp), Canada (21.9/pmp), Portugal (33.6/pmp) and Croatia (41.2/pmp). The remodeling of Parana's transplant system, between 2011 and 2020, was based on the recognized Spanish model, but has some unique characteristics. This book seeks to describe all the steps of this remodeling, describing its characteristics and explaining how the new system was built. By presenting an in-depth analysis of a local successful case, Effective Public Health Policy in Organ Donation: Lessons from a Universal Public Health System in Brazil seeks to provide useful information to policy makers, health professionals and students from different fields within the health sciences interested in understanding how public health policies can improve organ donation rates, especially in developing countries.

Children as Tissue Donors - Regulatory Protection, Medical Ethics, and Practice (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original... Children as Tissue Donors - Regulatory Protection, Medical Ethics, and Practice (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2018)
Shih-Ning Then
R2,653 Discovery Miles 26 530 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book examines the position of children who provide tissue to potentially save the life of another. It questions whether child donors of all ages have been treated appropriately and whether they are sufficiently protected in acting as tissue donors, and ultimately considers whether a new regulatory response is needed to benefit donor children. The book couples a legal exposition of the donor child's position with the medico-ethical reality of clinical practice. In recent years, a growing body of literature concerning the clinical experiences and outcomes for child donors has emerged. This book adds to this by examining another dimension - the regulatory frameworks at play. It examines the ethical arguments for and against children acting as tissue donors and provides an original analysis of the legal and non-legal regulatory frameworks governing children's participation in the United Kingdom, United States and Australia. It combines these doctrinal and theoretical approaches with insights into clinical practice gained from the results of qualitative research conducted with health professionals. The analysis inevitably explores the more general issues of children's right to make medical decisions, the role of parents in decision-making, the value of the best interests test and alternative (legal and ethical) standards, rights of participation of children before the courts, and the role of law and other forms of regulation in a clinical context.

A Revised Consent Model for the Transplantation of Face and Upper Limbs: Covenant Consent (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the... A Revised Consent Model for the Transplantation of Face and Upper Limbs: Covenant Consent (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2017)
James L. Benedict
R1,408 Discovery Miles 14 080 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book supports the emerging field of vascularized composite allotransplantation (VCA) for face and upper-limb transplants by providing a revised, ethically appropriate consent model which takes into account what is actually required of facial and upper extremity transplant recipients. In place of consent as permission-giving, waiver, or autonomous authorization (the standard approaches), this book imagines consent as an ongoing mutual commitment, i.e. as covenant consent. The covenant consent model highlights the need for a durable personal relationship between the patient/subject and the care provider/researcher. Such a relationship is crucial given the recovery period of 5 years or more for VCA recipients. The case for covenant consent is made by first examining the field of vascularized composite allotransplantation, the history and present understandings of consent in health care, and the history and use of the covenant concept from its origins through its applications to health care ethics today. This book explains how standard approaches to consent are inadequate in light of the particular features of facial and upper limb transplantation. In contrast, use of the covenant concept creates a consent model that is more appropriate ethically for these very complex surgeries and long-term recoveries.

Paul J Thuluvath
R3,334 Discovery Miles 33 340 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

As there is a high incidence of disease recurrence after liver transplantation, this volume is designed around the need for a reference text dealing exclusively with this problem. The book places special emphasis on pre- and post-transplant predictors of recurrence, severity assessment, prophylaxis, and treatment. Pathobiology of disease recurrence is discussed in detail where applicable. Issues including quality of life and cost burden are also covered in the text. Written by well-known authorities in each field, Disease Recurrence After Liver Transplantation: Natural History, Treatment and Survival serves as a comprehensive reference for physicians and surgeons who take care of liver transplant recipients and a major addition to the literature detailing the current understanding of disease recurrence.

Bruno K. Podesser, David J. Chambers
R2,911 Discovery Miles 29 110 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Although cardiac surgery has made an enormous progress during the last decades, the discipline has to cope with essential changes: Patients are increasingly cared for by cardiologists and therefore referred to the surgeon in a later stage of disease. Consequently, they are more often in an increasingly serious state or in advanced age with significant comorbidities. In order to meet the requirements of these different patient groups, cardiosurgical treatments require special protectional strategies for the heart in order to perform the planned operations safely. This book presents the latest knowledge of modern techniques of myocardial protection taking into consideration the different patient groups and current scientific strategies. Furthermore, it discusses present and future scientific approaches in myocardial protection and preservation.

R3,153 Discovery Miles 31 530 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Computer-Assisted Surgery (CAS) is a new tool for performing complex procedures in a predictable and safe way. This book is designed to serve as a comprehensive review of Computer-Assisted Surgery, covering the current status of both research and applications. CAS includes Virtual Preoperative Planning (VPP) and Intraoperative Virtual Navigation (IVN), which are a set of technologies used to measure oncological margins in 3-Dimensions (3D), to locate small intraosseous tumors and apply controlled resections preserving anatomical structures. During VPP, patient acquired multimodal images are processed and an interactive virtual scenario is created. This can then be used as a platform to measure oncological distances and preplan osteotomies in safe areas. IVN is a procedure which allows the execution of the VPP with a mean error of less than 3mm. For the student, medical doctors, research and development scientists or new researchers, the protocols are central to the performance of Computer-Assisted technologies.
