Randolph Caldecott (1846-1886) was one of the most important
British illustrators. He transformed the world of decorated
children's books in the Victorian era. In 1877, he was asked by
Edmund Evans, the colour printer and talented engraver, to
illustrate two children's books. These books were an immediate
success and he went on to produce two books every Christmas until
he died. Caldecott chose all the stories and rhymes he illustrated
and occasionally wrote and added to the stories himself. His
delightful style and humour can still be enjoyed by young and old
alike. This story, 'The Diverting History Of John Gilpin', was one
of the first two books illustrated by Caldecott and was originally
published in 1878. Many of the earliest children's books,
particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now
extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. Pook Press are working
to republish these classic works in affordable, high quality,
colour editions, using the original text and artwork so these works
can delight another generation of children.
Walter Crane (1845-1915) was one of the earliest contributors to
children's literature and one of the most influential illustrators
in the development of children's colour picture books. Crane began
working for Edmund Evans in 1864 producing bright, colourful
children's books which revolutionised the type of children's books
available. This wonderfully decorated book 'The Baby's Own Aesop',
is collection of rhyming Aesop's Fables about animals originally
published in 1887. Many of the earliest children's books,

Kate Greenwaway (1846-1901) is one of the most popular children's
book illustrators of all time. Edmund Evans produced her first book
in 1879, which sold out resulting in triumph and gaining Greenaway
her reputation. She has enchanted people, young and old, for over
one hundred years with her watercolour illustrations of sweet,
charming eighteenth century children with their quaint costumes and
idyllic scenes. Kate Greenaway's book 'Marigold Garden: Pictures
And Rhymes' was originally published in 1885, it contains many
nursery rhymes and tales together with her beautiful illustrations.

A sweet story in rhyme about enjoying a day at the sea. For little
starfish and other water rats ages 4 years and up. The sun is
shining, cheerful, and bright. It tickles me awake with its happy
light. Do you know where we're going today? To the sea! Little
doggy, will you come with me?
Curly locks, curly locks, wilt thou be mine? Thou shalt not wash
dishes, nor yet feed the swine; But sit on a cushion, and sew a
fine seam, And feed upon strawberries, sugar, and cream.

Every child's bookshelf should start with a collection of nursery
rhymes so that these fantastic and nonsensical verses (some so old
their meaning is long forgotten) are among the first magical words
to sound in a child's ear. This collection of over two hundred
rhymes was assembled in 1903 with the family in mind ('Tradition in
the nursery has acted as a severe editor'). and each page is
illustrated each verse decorated, with the imcomparable drawing of
Charles Robinson.

Once, many years ago,
there was a baby,
in his pram,
with his sisters
and their sandwiches and lemonade
and toys . . .
A lyrical and epic story about a baby and a trio of toys, and their
adventure on the high seas. Beautifully told by master storyteller
Allan Ahlberg and stunningly illustrated by Emma Chichester Clark in
their first standalone picture-book collaboration.
How to Sparkle at Nursery Rhymes contains 40 photocopiable sheets
for use with beginning readers. Research shows that early
sensitivity to rhymes helps children to learn to read. These fun,
but simple, activities aim to develop sequencing and language
skills through the teaching of 20 traditional rhymes. The
activities in this book complement those found in other books in
the series. Together they provide material to cover the key skills
beginning readers need to practise.
When stormy skies threaten, people stock up on supplies, bring in
their outside toys, and check the news for updates. And during the
storm, if the power goes out, they can play games and tell stories
by candlelight. But what do animals do? They watch and listen, look
for a cozy den or some other sheltered spot, and hunker down to
wait. After the storm, while the people are cleaning up their
yards, making repairs, and checking on the neighbours, the animals
emerge from their hiding places and shake off the rain. And
everyone is happy to be out in the sunshine again, grateful for
better weather and the company of friends.
