Medical History and Physical Examination in Companion Animals (Hardcover, 1995 ed.): A. Rijnberk, H.W.De Vries Medical History and Physical Examination in Companion Animals (Hardcover, 1995 ed.)
A. Rijnberk, H.W.De Vries
R6,001 Discovery Miles 60 010 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The medical history and physical examination are the most important cornerstones of clinical diagnosis, but there has been no single book devoted to a description of methods applicable to companion animals. This book is intended to fulfil the need. It describes the methods used in the veterinary schools of the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands and the University of Ghent in Belgium. The effectiveness of these methods is recognized by many visiting staff members and students from other veterinary schools in Europe and North America. Central to this book is the concept that the examination should be as efficient as possible. To achieve this purpose, a short initial examination is used to define the problems presented by the owner. The clinician is then guided in making choices, which focuses the attention on the essential problems and makes more of the examination time available for problem solving. The methods of examination, which are described system by system, are based on this selective approach. Many of the chapters close with a medical history form, which facilitates rapid orientation to the medical problem, and throughout the book photographs and original drawings illustrate both concepts and methods.

Periparturient Diseases of Dairy Cows - A Systems Biology Approach (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): Burim N. Ametaj Periparturient Diseases of Dairy Cows - A Systems Biology Approach (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Burim N. Ametaj
R4,749 R4,283 Discovery Miles 42 830 Save R466 (10%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book summarizes the results achieved so far by application of various biological systems (including genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics) involved in the pathomechanisms and early diagnosis of periparturient diseases as specific biomarkers of disease in cattle. These emerging technologies help to extensively enhance our understanding of the etiology and pathogenesis of periparturient diseases of transition dairy cows. The book includes a chapter dedicated to 'omics' sciences and one that discusses the myths established in animal and veterinary sciences in recent decades and emerging, new paradigms. The diseases discussed include metritis, mastitis, laminitis, ketosis, rumen acidosis, periparturient immunosuppression, gastrointestinal microbiota and their involvement in disease, infertility, fatty liver, milk fever, and retained placenta. This book is intended for academics, veterinarians, animal nutritionists, researchers, and graduate students working in the field of 'omics sciences' with a special interest in dairy cattle health.

Histophysiology of the Obesity-Diabetes Syndrome in Sand Rats (Paperback): Herwig Hahn von Dorsche, Harald Sch afer, Milan... Histophysiology of the Obesity-Diabetes Syndrome in Sand Rats (Paperback)
Herwig Hahn von Dorsche, Harald Sch afer, Milan Titlbach
R2,907 Discovery Miles 29 070 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

1. 1 Experimental Diabetes in the Sand Rat 1. 1. 1 Zoology Experimental diabetes has been used in numerous animals, of which rodents have been predominant because of their ease of maintenance and handling (Herberg 1979), but some species of ape and monkey have also occasionally been used (Brunk 1971; Malaisse and Malaisse-Lagae 1970). Herberg et al. (1976) divided rodent species into two groups based on the similarity of their metabolic response to the induction of diabetes to the onset of diabetes mellitus in man. In one of these groups (mouse, Mongolian gerbil, Tuco tuca), the response of the metabolism to the induction of diabetes was similar to the changes seen in the onset of adult-type diabetes mellitus in man; while the other group, which included the sand rat, spiny mouse, Chinese hamster, and Djungarian hamster, responded to diabetes induction in a way suggestive of juvenile insulin-dependent diabetes. Such a subdivision is not without prob lems, however, particularly since difference occur not only between the various species of a group (Herberg et al. 1976), but, in our experience, also between animals of the same species (for instance the sand rat). Hence, the zoology of animals used for experimental purposes must also be taken into account. 1 The sand rat is classified as follows: Species: obesus Genus: Psammomys Subfamily: Gerbillinae Family: Cricetidae Suborder: Myomorpha Order: Rodentia Subclass: Placentalia Class: Mammalia Subphylum: Vertebrata Phylum: Chordata Psammomys obesus was first described by the zoologist P. J."

The Human-Animal Bond in Clinical Social Work Practice (Paperback, 1st ed. 2021): Katherine Compitus The Human-Animal Bond in Clinical Social Work Practice (Paperback, 1st ed. 2021)
Katherine Compitus
R1,481 R1,394 Discovery Miles 13 940 Save R87 (6%) Ships in 9 - 15 working days

The human-animal bond may be described as a dynamic, mutually beneficial relationship between people and the animals they care for. There are a multitude of mental and physical health benefits for people who care for animals, and animals in therapy have been shown to aid a wide range of people and illnesses. Although the benefits of animal companionship have long been suspected, little is known about the research, the process, or why it works. This book provides clinicians with a history of the human-animal bond and the rationale for incorporating animals into therapy today. In this book, the author includes a discussion of the myriad of ways that clinicians can directly help people care for their pets, such as crisis intervention services, policy issues, grief counseling for pet loss, and compassion fatigue in the veterinary profession. There also is a thorough discussion of animal-assisted therapy (AAT) as a distinct and unique modality. The adaptive nature of AAT is not only due to the symbiotic relationship between humans and animals, but also because of the flexible nature of the model; it can be used with clients of all demographics and with most mental illnesses. Research shows that the majority of mental health practitioners believe that AAT is a valid treatment modality, but AAT has not yet been manualized and clinicians are left confused about where to start. The Human-Animal Bond in Clinical Social Work Practice is a unique and essential resource that provides guidelines for developing AAT treatment plans and integrating AAT with existing therapeutic models. The book answers the questions that social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists, and other mental health counselors may have about the benefits of the human-animal bond and ways to tap into that special bond in direct practice.

R2,146 Discovery Miles 21 460 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

One of the most difficult issues that confronts veterinarians and staff today concerns the profession's obligation to the animal and the sometimes conflicting demands from clients, peers and society. The veterinarian's role has become more complex with new ethical challenges posed by issues such as growing public awareness regarding animal welfare, increasing economic value of companion animals, growth of veterinary specialization, experimentation with alternative and complementary medicine, and concern for pain management and mental well-being of animals.

Written by an acknowledged pioneer in veterinary ethics, "An Introduction to Veterinary Medical Ethics "addresses the ethical challenges that veterinarians face daily as they seek to balance obligations to animal, client, peers, society and self. The book offers a highly readable and approachable introduction to the nature of ethical theory, reasoning and decision-making, and its practical application to veterinary medicine. Now with over 100 real-life veterinary case histories and analysis, this edition also includes new discussions of animal pain, distress and happiness, ethics of critical care, alternative medicine, legal status and value of animals, and Aesculapian authority.

Sophie Pullen, Carol Gray
R989 Discovery Miles 9 890 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The importance for individuals to have an awareness of the law as it relates to them professionally has never been more important for veterinary nursing than it is now. With moves in place to regulate veterinary nursing, issues of accountability will arise that will impact on every veterinary nurse in practice. It will be essential for every nurse to be fully informed about the law and their professional obligations. In the multi-cultural society we live in, a knowledge of other cultures, values and beliefs is essential if nurses are to offer the best and most sensitive service to clients and by extension to their animals. Ethical implications extend to every area of working practice; from everyday decisions through to the way in which research is conducted and analysed. This book explores all the ethical issues surrounding veterinary nursing in a clear and comprehensible way. This is the first book that addresses ethics and law specifically from a veterinary nursing perspective. The authors have used their expert knowledge in these areas together with their teaching experience to create a book that will be useful for veterinary nursing students, especially those at Certificate, Diploma and Degree level, and will make interesting reading for the qualified veterinary nurse. Case examples have been used to illustrate the various issues and highlight the relevance of these to everyday practice; every veterinary nurse will identify with at least one of the scenarios presented. Key topics covered include: regulation; representation; research ethics; religious ethics; the Veterinary Surgeon's Act. This book not only fulfils the requirements of the veterinary nursing syllabus but will also become a well-thumbed reference for daily practice.
