The Indian War of 1864 chronicles one of the bloodiest conflicts
between the European settlers and military forces of the United
States, and the Native American tribes. A shocking account of the
bloodshed and damage wrought as white settlers moved relentlessly
westward during the 19th century, this book lays bare the scale of
the conflicts with the Native Americans. Furthermore it is
authentic: a first-hand, somewhat biographical recollection of the
conflict penned by a young American cavalryman posted to the
Western frontier with the mission of securing it for settlers. The
conflicts took place simultaneously with the American Civil War,
and it was thus that rumors of the Confederacy joining with the
Native American tribes in hindering the expansion of the United
States are present. Despite its title, this book is not entirely
about the skirmishes fought: it includes descriptions of the land,
the fledgling frontier society of the 'Wild West' era, and members
of the native tribes.
This book chronicles the lives and deaths of courageous Canadians.
It also tells the inspiring story of how the citizens of Nelson of
all ages, with help from surrounding communities, marshalled all
their resources and devoted their civic life for six long years to
help make victory possible. Their efforts prompted some to call
Nelson "The Most Patriotic Town in B.C." And, Nelsons story
highlights an important chapter of Canadian history -- the
invaluable contribution to the Allied war effort made by countless
small Canadian communities across the country.
In the First World War, civilian life played a fundamental part in
the war effort; and music was no exception. Performing Propaganda
looks at musical life in Paris during the First World War. This
conflict was one in which civilian life played a fundamental part
in the war effort; and music was no exception. The book examines
how Western art music became a central part of the home-front war
effort, employed by both musicians and government as a powerful
tool of propaganda. It situates French art music of the First World
War within its social, cultural and political context, and within
the wider temporal framework of the Franco-Prussian and Second
World Wars. Drawing on a diverse range of archival material,
including concert and operatic programmes, the musical and daily
press, documents detailing government involvement in musical
activity, and police records, it explores how various facets of
French musical life served, in very different ways, as propaganda.
In short, it explores why music mattered during a period of
prolonged conflict, whether as emotional catalyst, weapon, or tool.
This book will be of interest to musicologists, to cultural
historians working on early twentieth-century France, and to
scholars of the First World War,as well as to a more general
readership with an interest in music during times of adversity.

The fall of 2016 saw the release of the widely popular First World
War video game Battlefield 1. Upon the game's initial announcement
and following its subsequent release, Battlefield 1 became the
target of an online racist backlash that targeted the game's
inclusion of soldiers of color. Across social media and online
communities, players loudly proclaimed the historical inaccuracy of
black soldiers in the game and called for changes to be made that
correct what they considered to be a mistake that was influenced by
a supposed political agenda. Through the introduction of the
theoretical framework of the 'White Mythic Space', this book seeks
to investigate the reasons behind the racist rejection of soldiers
of color by Battlefield 1 players in order to answer the question:
Why do individuals reject the presence of people of African descent
in popular representations of history?

the USA, remains as incisive and intellectually rich today as when

philosophy, Brownson casts his analytical gaze to the inception of

those authored by the Founding Fathers prior to and following the
creation of the United States, the author attempts to demonstrate
how religion and politics are interrelated - in the case of
America's founding, both had roles. Writing in the mid-19th
century, Orestes Brownson attempts to clarify what the nature of
the U.S. government is, and how the Constitution reflects it.
Various natural laws, such as those pertaining to the family and
human development of civilization, are examined. Part of Brownson's
conclusion is the idea religion must continue to play a role in the
USA, just as it has since the colonial era.
