Analysis of Fracture Toughness Mechanism in Ultra-fine-grained Steels - The Effect of the Treatment Developed in NIMS... Analysis of Fracture Toughness Mechanism in Ultra-fine-grained Steels - The Effect of the Treatment Developed in NIMS (Paperback, 2014 ed.)
Toshihiro Hanamura, Hai Qiu
R1,586 Discovery Miles 15 860 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In this book, advanced steel technologies mainly developed at the National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS), Japan, for structure control, mechanical properties, and the related mechanisms are introduced and discussed. NIMS has long worked on developing advanced steel techniques, namely, producing advanced steels by using only simple alloying elements such as carbon, manganese, and silicon, and also by utilizing steel scrap. The hope is that this approach will lead to a technology of a so-called steel-to-steel recycling process, with the ultimate goal of a recycling process such as an automotive-steel-to-automotive-steel recycling process to take the place of the current cascade-type recycling system. The main idea is to utilize ultra-grain refining structures and hetero structures as well as martensite structures. In particular, the focus of this book is on tensile strength and toughness of advanced steels from both the fundamental and engineering points of view. Fundamentally, a unique approach to analysis is taken, based on fracture surface energy as effective grain size is employed to better understand the mechanism of property improvement. From the engineering point of view, in fracture toughness such factors as crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) of advanced steels are evaluated in comparison with those of conventional steels.

Designing Weldments (Hardcover): Singh Designing Weldments (Hardcover)
Singh
R3,614 Discovery Miles 36 140 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Designing Weldments An important tool for professionals wishing to enhance their understanding or those who are new to the subject, Designing Weldments bridges that gap between structural engineers and a deeper understanding of the welding engineering within the structures. In modern-day construction, welding is the primary method to join various members of any structure. Welds are required to meet various types of load in tension, compression, torsion, and perform in static or cyclic loading conditions. The weld has to be at least as strong as the parent metal to meet the demands of various stress working on the structure. It should meet the structural requirement, add value to the integrity of the structure, and prevent failures. However, many design engineers lack even a fundamental insight or a basic understanding of essential welding processes and design requirements. Simply copying a few joint configurations in a drawing will not suffice. All-embracing and readable, Designing Weldments delivers a deeper understanding of many design factors that play a critical role in the design. The book clarifies welding design principles and applications. With this reference in hand, designers will have expert knowledge to consider very early on in the project, the implications of the choice of what type of weld to use for joining structural members, and how the component is made. The author explains the many welding techniques developed over the years, as well as some of which are still evolving. The reader will also find in this book: Rules of thumb for saving time and money in the design phase of a project. An insider's view for choosing the proper welding approach to ensure the overall strength of a structure. Offers structural engineers a deeper understanding of the weld within their structures. Clarifies welding design principles and applications, limiting the necessity to redesign the structure. Audience The intended market for this book is professionals working on the infrastructural projects in shipbuilding, construction of buildings, bridges, offshore platforms, wind towers for renewable energy, and other structures that join plates, pipes, and pipelines in power plants, manufacturing, and repair.

Machining of Complex Sculptured Surfaces (Paperback, 2012 ed.): J. Paulo Davim Machining of Complex Sculptured Surfaces (Paperback, 2012 ed.)
J. Paulo Davim
R3,325 Discovery Miles 33 250 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The machining of complex sculptured surfaces is a global technological topic in modern manufacturing with relevance in both industrialized and emerging in countries particularly within the moulds and dies sector whose applications include highly technological industries such as the automotive and aircraft industry. "Machining of Complex Sculptured Surfaces" considers new approaches to the manufacture of moulds and dies within these industries. The traditional technology employed in the manufacture of moulds and dies combined conventional milling and electro-discharge machining (EDM) but this has been replaced with high-speed milling (HSM) which has been applied in roughing, semi-finishing and finishing of moulds and dies with great success.

"Machining of Complex Sculptured Surfaces" provides recent information on machining of complex sculptured surfaces including modern CAM systems and process planning for three and five axis machining as well as explanations of the advantages of HSM over traditional methods ranging from work piece precision and roughness to manual polishing following machining operations.

Whilst primarily intended for engineering students and post graduates (particularly in the fields of mechanical, manufacturing or materials), "Machining of Complex Sculptured Surfaces" provides clear instructions on modern manufacturing; serving as a practical resource for all academics, researchers, engineers and industry professionals with interest in the machining of complex sculptured surfaces."

Currently, most of the major commercial metal additive manufacturing (MAM) techniques rely on liquid phase processing. The liquid to solid phase transformations in these techniques results in microstructural issues and defects which in turn tantamount to inferior properties of fabricated build. Friction based additive manufacturing technologies are solid state processing techniques which work on the principles of friction based joining processes and layer by layer additive manufacturing. This book primarily addresses the basic understanding of seven friction based additive manufacturing techniques. These techniques include additive manufacturing methods based on rotary friction welding, linear friction welding, friction deposition, friction surfacing, friction stir additive manufacturing, friction assisted seam welding and additive friction stir. The principle of operations, benefits, limitations and recent developments of each technique has been described. It covers potentional and probable applications of each technique through review of various experimental studies. Features Targets friction based solid state additive manufacturing of metallic materials Describes principle of operation of seven friction based additive manufacturing techniques Reviews latest trends of these processes via experimental studies Describes benefits and limitations of each technique Covers current and probable applications of these techniques
