Until now much of the early history of ice hockey in Scotland has been neglected or forgotten - metaphorically frozen in time, lying buried under the ice. Here, for the first time, is a comprehensive and social history of both the Club and International game in the country from the late 19th century up to 1940. It aims to restore Scottish ice hockey to its right and proper place, representing a pioneering nation in the early development and organisation of this great world-wide sport. Do you feel the pressure in today's hockey culture to train all year, play in numerous out-of-town tournaments, and pay thousands of extra dollars so that your hockey player can compete with the best? If so, you're not alone. Today's prevailing wisdom states that year-round intense hockey training, starting at the youngest ages, is necessary to develop elite hockey players. It argues that families must choose between hockey and school events, family dinners, study time, and other sports. The good news is that families need not feel pressured to choose because this prevalent hockey training philosophy is not only in many ways unethical, it is also detrimental. Year-round intense hockey schedules are damaging youth hockey player's futures. Too much hockey is hurting athletes academically, socially, and ironically, athletically as well.

For much of the nineteenth century European militarists had channeled their spirit and energy into sports in hopes of creating a training ground for warriors. This new concept and logic fed upon the ideas of racial purity and warrior cults. It was a belief system well in keeping with the imperialism of the times. In the 1890s this form of ideology and practice reached new levels as athletes began to compete under the banners of nations.
