New Daughters Of Africa features a number of well-known South African contributors including Gabeba Baderoon, Nadia Davids, Diana Ferrus, Vangile Gantsho, Barbara Masekela, Lebogang Mashile and Sisonke Msimang.
This book is committed to women as writers and storytellers; all
the selected novels are female-centric in that the main characters
are women. The authors, also women, are from three diverse American
ethnic groups from both the North and South. Through a close
reading of several novels, Babakhani shows how the reinvention of
cultural traditions serves these women writers as a political,
decolonial, and feminist tool. Babakhani situates her readings in a
critique of the concepts of realism and magical realism. Because
magical realism sets realism against magic and implies binary
oppositions, Babakhani proposes "cultural realism" as a revisionary
concept that takes the cultural importance of rituals and beliefs
seriously, without simply dismissing them as superstition.
Contained Empowerment and the Liminal Nature of Feminisms and
Activisms examines the processes by which activist successes are
limited, outlines a theoretical framing of the liminal and temporal
limits to social justice efforts as "contained empowerment." With a
focused lens on the third wave and contemporary forms of feminism,
the author investigates feminist activity from the early 1990s
through responses and reactions to the overturning of Roe v. Wade
in 2022, and contrasts these efforts with anti-feminist, white
supremacist, and other structural normalizing efforts designed to
limit and repress women's, gendered, and reproductive rights. This
book includes analyses of celebrity activism, girl power,
transnational feminist NGOs, digital feminisms, and the feminist
mimicry applied by practitioners of neo-liberal and anti-feminism.
Victoria A. Newsome concludes that the contained nature of feminist
empowerment illustrates how activists must engage directly with
intersectional challenges and address the multiplicities of
structural oppressions in order to breach containment.
In Imaginary Empires, Maria O'Malley examines early American texts
published between 1767 and 1867 whose narratives represent women's
engagement in the formation of empire. Her analysis unearths a
variety of responses to contact, exchange, and cohabitation in the
early United States, stressing the possibilities inherent in the
literary to foster participation, resignification, and
rapprochement. New readings of The Female American, Leonora
Sansay's Secret History, Catharine Maria Sedgwick's Hope Leslie,
Lydia Maria Child's A Romance of the Republic, and Harriet Jacobs's
Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl confound the metaphors of
ghosts, haunting, and amnesia that proliferate in many recent
studies of early US literary history. Instead, as O'Malley shows,
these writings foreground acts of foundational violence involved in
the militarization of domestic spaces, the legal impediments to the
transfer of property and wealth, and the geopolitical standing of
the United States. Racialized and gendered figures in the texts
refuse to die, leave, or stay silent. In imagining different kinds
of futures, these writers reckon with the ambivalent role of women
in empire-building as they negotiate between their own subordinate
position in society and their exertion of sovereignty over others.
By tracing a thread of virtual history found in works by women,
Imaginary Empires explores how reflections of the past offer a
means of shaping future sociopolitical formations.
Though there has been a rapid increase of women's representation in
law and business, their representation in STEM fields has not been
