Addresses the significance of the enormous contributions in science
and technology towards the realization of Japan's "Economic
Miracle" during the occupation of Japan. In particular, the text
examines the work of the Scientific and Technical Division of
McArthur's GHQ. The Scientific and Technical Division encouraged
the creation of new national bodies concerned with science and
technology. It persuaded the Japanese Government to create new and
more efficient means of dealing with technological matters
(including industrial standards, quality control, patents and other
intellectual property), and managed the sending abroad of
scientists and engineers, government officials and industrialists
to observe up-to-date practices in other countries.
