Index - Preface - This book attempts to provide the broad
background, to illustrate the basic reasons for the properties of
elements, and to explain the consequences of chemical combination,
alloying, and mixing. Most previous books have touched only lightly
on the atom itself, but my experience in teaching engineers in the
University of Manchester suggests that a greater depth of approach
is welcome, perhaps because it can account for so much of the
subsequent behaviour of metals.
