Harle focuses on the perennial issue of social order by
providing a comparative analysis of ideas on social order in the
classical Chinese political philosophy, the Indian epic and
political literature, Zoroastrianism, Judaism, the classical Greek
and Roman political thought, and early Christianity. His analysis
is based on the religious, political, and literary texts that
represent their respective civilizations as both their major
achievements and sources of shared values.
Harle maintains that two major approaches to establishing and
maintaining social order exist in all levels and types of social
relations: moral principles and political power. According to the
principle-oriented approaches, social order will prevail if and
when people follow strict moral principles. According to the
contending power-oriented approach, orderly relations can only be
based on the application of power by the ruler over the ruled. The
principle-oriented approaches introduce a comprehensive civil
society of individuals; the power-oriented approaches give major
roles to the city-state, its government and relationships between
them. The question of morality can be recognized also within the
power-oriented approaches which either submit politics to morality
or maintain that politics must be taken as nothing else than
politics. This book is a contribution to peace and international
studies as well as political theory and international
relations.

As Harle shows, identity politics are nothing new. Post-Cold War
ethnic conflicts and genocides are mere examples in a tradition
where political conflicts are seen as struggles between good and
evil. This tradition extends from ancient Iranian Zoroastrianism
and classical Greek political theory up to present day American,
Russian, and European politics.
Harle examines how conflicts between us and them are often
"represented" as the struggle between the representatives of good
and representatives of evil. The origin of this tradition--the
struggle between good and evil--is found in ancient Iranian
Zoroastrianism, soon adopted by Judaism, Christianity, and finally,
Islam.
The political doctrine was born in ancient Greece, where power
struggles between the Greek city states, especially Athens and
Sparta, were represented by Athenians as the struggle between
democracy and tyranny. In the Middle Ages the tradition was applied
to, for example, Antichrists, rival faiths, witches, Jews,
Russians, and Muslims. In the modern world, examples of the
tradition in American and Russian political cultures and politics,
as well as Carl Schmitt's distinction between friend and enemy and
its international implications, especially the EU, are examined.
Finally, identity politics in Finland, Karelia, and Lapland are
presented as a problem of the definition of Europe. Harle claims
that phenomena like ethnic conflicts, political extremism,
neo-Nazism, and anti-Semitism are nothing new and are not
independent of one another; instead, as Harle shows, they are
examples in a long chain of tradition and interconnected through
that tradition. A provocative analysis for scholars and researchers
in international relations, political history, and the history of
ideas.
Lignans, by convention, are a group of natural products that are
formed by linking two phenylpropanoid units (C C units) by
oxidative coupling. Most importantly, in 6 3 a lignan, two (C C
units) are bound through the central carbon of their side chains, 6
3 0 i. e. the 8 and 8 positions (1, 2). The occurrence of C C
-dimers, linked at sites other 6 3 0 than the 8-8 positions, is
also known and these compounds have been termed neolignans (3, 4).
As these two groups of compounds have close structural as well as
biosynthetic relationships, they are often associated together and
incorporated under the general term "lignan" (5). The diverse
structural categorization of true lignans and of a few neolignans
is presented in Fig. 1. Through the years, several review articles
or books covering different facets of lignans, including their ch-
istry (6, 7), biogenesis (8), synthesis (9), and biological
activities (10) have been published. Enduring research for the
investigation of secondary metabolites of plants has evidenced some
compounds that are biogenetically related to true lignans or
neolignans but bear some features not discerned in conventional
lignans. These compounds or groups of compounds have been termed as
"non-conventional lignans", and include coumarinolignans,
?avonolignans, and stilbenolignans. The non-conventional lignans,
like the conventional ones, have two C C units linked 6 3 together
but have additional structural features to place them also under
the category of coumarins, ?avonoids, or stilbenes.

Originally published in 1985, this book analyses the development of
private rented housing in Britain, France, the former West Germany,
the Netherlands and the USA. The book shows that the changing
fortunes of the private rented sector are seen in some measure to
be connected with the social, economic and political conditions
which surrounded the rapid industrialisation and urbanisation of
the 19th Century.
How Listening Well Builds Stronger Communication and Deeper
Connections No relationship is perfect--but it can be better. The
secret to stronger relationships isn't to become more charming or
funny or to solve the world's problems or to just try harder. All
you have to do is listen. It's that simple. Yet our noisy culture
hasn't equipped us to do this. With warmth and a touch of humor,
personal coach and expert communicator Becky Harling shares simple,
practical listening tools that will help you become a person others
are drawn to and want to spend time with, as well as how to: * be
fully present * offer understanding instead of advice * ask great
questions * create a sense of safety and trust * manage your body
language * and more! When you learn to listen well, your marriage
will grow stronger, your parenting will flourish, your friendships
will thrive, and your influence at work will increase. You will be
amazed at how one simple act can transform the hearts of others--as
well as your own.
