A noted comics artist himself, Santiago Garcia follows the history
of the graphic novel from early nineteenth-century European
sequential art, through the development of newspaper strips in the
United States, to the development of the twentieth-century comic
book and its subsequent crisis. He considers the aesthetic and
entrepreneurial innovations that established the conditions for the
rise of the graphic novel all over the world. Garcia not only
treats the formal components of the art, but also examines the
cultural position of comics in various formats as a popular medium.
Typically associated with children, often viewed as unedifying and
even at times as a threat to moral character, comics art has come a
long way. With such examples from around the world as Spain,
France, Germany, and Japan, Garcia illustrates how the graphic
novel, with its increasingly global and aesthetically sophisticated
profile, represents a new model for graphic narrative production
that empowers authors and challenges longstanding social prejudices
against comics and what they can achieve.
Agroecology not only encompasses aspects of ecology, but the
ecology of sustainable food production systems, and related
societal and cultural values. To provide effective communication
regarding status and advances in this field, connections must be
established with many disciplines such as sociology, anthropology,
environmental sciences, ethics, agriculture, economics, ecology,
rural development, sustainability, policy and education, or
integrations of these general themes so as to provide integrated
points of view that will help lead to a more sustainable
construction of values than conventional economics alone. Such
designs are inherently complex and dynamic, and go beyond the
individual farm to include landscapes, communities, and
biogeographic regions by emphasizing their unique agricultural and
ecological values, and their biological, societal, and cultural
components and processes.

Our food systems have performed well in the past, but they are
failing us in the face of climate change and other challenges. This
book tells the story of why food system transformation is needed,
how it can be achieved and how research can be a catalyst for
change. Written by a global interdisciplinary team of researchers,
it brings together perspectives from multiple areas including
climate, environment, agriculture, and the social sciences to
describe how different tools and approaches can be used to tackle
food system transformation. It provides practical, actionable
insights for policymakers and advisors, demonstrating how science
together with strong partnerships can enable real transformation on
the ground. It also contributes to the academic debate on the
transformation of food systems, and so will be an invaluable
reference for researchers and students alike. This title is also
available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.

Museum curators enter the profession with a specialist subject
qualification and yet at some point in their career, many curators
find themselves in charge of a range of collections outside of
their expert knowledge. Interpreting, curating and caring for mixed
collections demands of curators a wide range of knowledge and
understanding. The Curation and Care of Museum Collections is
designed to give curators the fundamental information and
confidence they need to manage and care for all of the collections
within their responsibility, regardless of their previous training
and experience. Comprising two sections - Museum Collections, and
Collection Development and Care - the chapters cover archaeology,
art, history, military and natural sciences collections, as well as
heritage properties. Every chapter in the book is focused on one
type of collection, but all chapters in the collection management
section contain advice on topics such as organisational philosophy,
documentation, legal issues and materials in order to provide a
useful and comprehensive guide to managing collections. The
collection care section is structured in the same way, considering
the issues of storage; display; handling; moving; packing;
housekeeping; health and safety; emergency preparedness; and pest,
pollution, environmental, light and vibration management. The
contributors to this book are experienced museum professionals,
each with their own specialism and a deep understanding of what it
means to work in the context of mixed collections. Providing a
highly practical guide, The Curation and Care of Museum Collections
is essential reading for curators working in all types of museums,
galleries and heritage sites, and for students of museology courses
around the world.

Most Hollywood biographies are little more than 500-page musings on
the ' when-I-met... ' theme, filled with famous names, love affairs
and cliche s of a ' meteoric rise' or ' tragic fall' . Bruce
Campbell' s If Chins Could Kill: Confessions of a B Movie Actor is
the boisterous antidote to such convention. Campbell is the
ultimate ' B' Movie actor. Star of the cult Evil Dead trilogy, with
a CV that ranges from buddy Sam Raimi' s Spider-Man, through The
X-Files and Xena: Warrior Princess, to the less-than-glamorous Aqua
Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters, you' ve probably
never heard of him. But his is one heck of a story! The popularity
of Bruce, the cult hero of cable TV and Hollywood' s second rung,
is burning brighter than ever, his legion of fans undiminished
after over thirty years. Insightful, encouraging and brilliantly
funny, If Chins Could Kill! is a brilliant place to start for those
unfamiliar with his work. For everyone else, it acts as a wonderful
reminder for just why they fell in love with him in the first
place.

This book discusses both the principles and applications of an
integrated approach to natural resources management. It deals
directly with the wider integration of natural resources, including
the complexity of systems and redirecting research towards
including participatory approaches, multi-scale analysis and an
array of tools for system analysis, information management and
impact asessment. This book has been developed from papers first
presented at a workshop in Penang, Malaysia in 2000. Each paper has
been peer-reviewed, revised and updated up to the end of 2002. Case
studies from around the world, particularly Asia, Africa and Latin
America, are presented by international experts.
The first broad treatment of German genre fiction, containing
innovative new essays on a variety of genres and foregrounding
concerns of gender, environmentalism, and memory. Some of the most
exciting research and teaching in the field of German Studies is
being done on "genre fiction," including detective fiction, science
fiction, and what is often called "poplit," to name but a few. Such
non-canonical literature has long been marginalized by the German
tradition of Bildung and the disciplinary practice of German
literary studies (Germanistik). Even today, when the examination of
non-canonical texts is well established and uncontroversial in
other academic contexts, such texts remain understudied in German.
And yet, the trend toward "German Studies" and "cultural studies"
approaches within the field has raised considerable interest in
theanalysis of genre fiction, resulting in both a great deal of new
scholarship and a range of new courses. This first broad treatment
of German genre fiction brings together innovative new scholarship,
foregrounding themes of gender, environmentalism, and memory. It is
an ideal companion to research and teaching. Written in accessible
English, it speaks to a wide variety of disciplines beyond German
Studies. Contributors: Bruce B. Campbell, Ray Canoy, Kerry Dunne,
Sonja Fritzsche, Maureen O. Gallagher, Adam R. King, Molly Knight,
Vibeke Rutzou Petersen, Evan Torner, and Ailsa Wallace. Bruce B.
Campbell is Associate Professor of German Studies at the College
ofWilliam and Mary. Alison Guenther-Pal is Assistant Professor of
German and Film Studies at Lawrence University. Vibeke Rutzou
Petersen is Professor Emerita of Women's Studies at Drake
University.
