Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not
used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad
quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are
images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to
keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the
original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain
imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made
available for future generations to enjoy.
This collection of short stories follows a vaguely chronological
journey through the modern American landscape. The stories reflect
the themes of the sometimes brutal as well as humorous aspects of
coming of age in America, the crisis of the individual who attempts
to live an authentic life, and the realities of relationships
between men and women.
This book (hardcover) is part of the TREDITION CLASSICS. It
contains classical literature works from over two thousand years.
Most of these titles have been out of print and off the bookstore
shelves for decades. The book series is intended to preserve the
cultural legacy and to promote the timeless works of classical
literature. Readers of a TREDITION CLASSICS book support the
mission to save many of the amazing works of world literature from
oblivion. With this series, tredition intends to make thousands of
international literature classics available in printed format again
- worldwide.
The town of Black Eagle, Oregon sits on the banks of the Columbia
River at the foot of snow covered Mt. Hood. It is home to church
going citizens, windsurfers and orchard workers. But when real
estate prices start to boom, an influx of newcomers arrive and the
cultural divide between Whites, Natives, and Hispanic workers
create tensions that brew just below the surface in this pretty
Pacific Northwest town. Based on real events in the early 1990s,
this fast paced novel reveals how the lives of four very different
Black Eagle characters intertwine when a fishing platform is
deliberately destroyed at an ancient Native site. Richard Sherwood
is the real estate developer from Back East who has arrived in
Black Eagle to make his fortune, who will stop at nothing to reach
his goal of becoming a millionaire before he's forty. Jim Hawks is
the Native who lives a quiet life on the river with his
grandfather, but ever since college harbors deep political unrest
that he doesn't know what to do with. Tawny is the church going
wife who thought her life would remain perfect when she "married
up" to Charles Spotts, but taking care of her new house and two
teen-age sons can't contain her restlessness. And Anna Kingston,
the single woman who changed her life from Boston businesswoman to
Black Eagle high school teacher, struggles with more than she
bargained for in her new life. The protest against the Richard
Sherwood's real estate development turns into a full-time
encampment -including tipis and a sacred flame - and each character
his forced to deal with the unfolding events in their own way.
This is the first major reference work on this important choral
composer. As is usual for volumes in this valuable series, the book
is clearly printed and well bound, and it is highly recommended for
undergraduate and graduate music collections as well as for public
libraries serving communities with active choral societies. Choice
When Randall Thompson died in 1984, America lost one of its most
distinguished musicians. At the time of his death, it was already
apparent that an assessment of his varied contributions to our
musical life in the context of his contemporary generation was
sorely needed. Randall Thompson: A Bio-Bibliography is the first
comprehensive study of Thompson's oeuvre since his death. The
volume is organized into five parts, beginning with a substantial
biography written by David Francis Urrows, Thompson's final student
and amanuensis. Urrows presents new information on Thompson's
youth, his study in Italy and the influence of Malipiero on his
work, his educational and compositional philosophy, and his role in
the emergence of American music from the influence of European
models. Benser's most complete catalog of works compiled to date
follows. This vital list includes previously unpublished
compositions, particularly those newly made available by Thompson's
longtime publisher, E. C. Schirmer, and new recordings made by Bay
Cities Music. A sampling of prose writings by Thompson offers a
eclectic overview. The complete, extensively annotated
bibliography, discography, and two appendixes that list Thompson's
compositions chronologically and alphabetically complete this
study. Music libraries will want to add this volume to their
collections. It will also be an invaluable reference for choral
directors, program note annotators, and American music enthusiasts.
This is a comprehensive reference survey on the identification and
development of promising cancer chemopreventive agents that will
help stimulate further novel research and new approvable drugs. For
each agent, the authors review the relevant mechanisms of action,
the criteria for populations benefiting from intervention, the
safety and pharmacodynamics, clinical study design emphasizing the
use of precancers, and early associated cellular and molecular
biomarkers of carcinogenesis. The pharmacologic and/or mechanistic
classes discussed range from antimutagens, antiinflammatories, and
the nuclear receptor superfamily, to signal transduction
modulators, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. The overall focus
is on molecular targets and mechanisms. A second volume,
"Strategies in Chemoprevention", describes the exciting
methodologies that will accelerate progress in this field and
discusses the state of clinical development of chemoprevention in
the various human cancer target organs.

Written by experts from various fields, this edited collection
explores a wide range of issues pertaining to how computers evoke
human social expectations. The book illustrates how socially
acceptable conventions can strongly impact the effectiveness of
human-computer interactions and how to consider such norms in the
design of human-computer interfaces. Providing a complete
introduction to the design of social responses to computers, the
text emphasizes the value of social norms in the development of
usable and enjoyable technology. It also describes the role of
socially correct behavior in technology adoption and how to design
human-computer interfaces for a competitive global market.

The popular "Mediator's Handbook" presents a time-tested, adaptable
model for helping people work through conflict. Extensively revised
to incorporate recent practice and thinking, the accessible manual
format lays out a clear structure for new and occasional mediators,
while offering a detailed, nuanced resource for professionals.
Starting with a new chapter on assessing conflict and bringing
people to the table, the first section explains the process
step-by-step, from opening conversations and exploring the
situation, through the phases of finding resolution deciding on
topics, reviewing options, and testing agreements. The "Toolbox"
section details the concepts and skills a mediator needs in order
to: Understand the conflict; Support the people; Facilitate the
process; Guide decision-making. Throughout the book, the emphasis
is on what the mediator can do or say NOW, and on the underlying
principles and core methods that can help the mediator make wise
choices. Long a popular course textbook for high schools,
universities, and training programs, this Handbook is also a valued
desk reference for professional mediators, and a practical guide
for managers, organisers, teachers and anyone working with clients,
customers, volunteers, committees or teams.

Teachers work with students, parents, administrators, coaches, camp
counselors, education researchers, postsecondary institutions,
teachers of other grades and other subjects-in short, teachers
accomplish their daily miracles through collaboration by asking
questions about what they don't know and sharing what they do. This
book was written by teacher pioneers to share their collaborating,
their designing, and their exploring.
