Neighbourhood Structure and Health Promotion (Hardcover, 2013 ed.): Christiane Stock, Anne Ellaway Neighbourhood Structure and Health Promotion (Hardcover, 2013 ed.)
Christiane Stock, Anne Ellaway
R4,061 Discovery Miles 40 610 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

It has long been theorized that people living in poor areas have more health problems than their more advantaged peers. More recently, science has been testing this hypothesis, concentrating on the impact of the built environment on well-being and its contribution to health inequities. Neighbourhood Structure and Health Promotion offers sociology-based theory and evidence-based findings so readers may better understand the effects of place on health choices, behaviour, and outcomes. This international volume analyzes the complex relationships among neighbourhood conditions and characteristics, people's perceptions of where they live, and their everyday health lives, from eating habits and activity levels to smoking, drinking, and drug use. Chapters introduce innovative methods for measuring and monitoring links between place and health in terms of risks and resources, and employing objective and subjective data. Prospects for engaging neighbourhoods in prevention efforts, particularly involving young people, and policy implications for the future of health promotion and inequity reduction are discussed as well. Included in the coverage: The spatiality of injustice: area effects on behaviour. Qualitative and quantitative methods for assessing neighbourhood health resources. The potential of GIS and GPS in the health sciences. Green spaces and health: possibilities for research and policy. School neighbourhoods and obesity prevention in youth. Connecting gender, social environment, and health. Neighbourhood Structure and Health Promotion advances the study of this increasingly critical topic, making it a valuable reference for researchers, practitioners, policy makers and advanced students in health, health promotion, social epidemiology, and urban planning.

Christian Stock, Luis A. Pardo
R3,786 Discovery Miles 37 860 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This second book of the three-volume collection "Ion Transport in Tumor Biology" helps readers gain comprehensive knowledge of the pathophysiology of cancer. The authors highlight that ion transport proteins, channels and transporters - collectively referred to as the transportome - are significantly involved in the development and progression of cancer. Nearly 90% of malignant tumor diseases originate from epithelial cells, the function of which, for the most part, is based on the transportome. This volume focuses on molecular principles by showing that dysregulated expression and/or function of ion transporters have been correlated with malignancy in the vast majority of tumor diseases. Within the story of the various chapters, the authors line out various malfunctions of the transportome and where they can be found at different stages of the metastatic cascade. The authors describe how the interactions between the tumor cells' transportome and the environment reinforce mesenchymal behaviour of cancer cells and contribute to their uncontrolled proliferation, migration, invasion, intra- and extravasation up to the formation of metastases. As part of a three-volume collection, this book will fascinate members of the active research community, as well as clinicians from the cancer field.

Christian Stock, Luis A. Pardo
R3,811 Discovery Miles 38 110 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This third and final volume in the "Ion Transport in Tumor Biology" collection presents novel diagnostic and therapeutic approaches in cancer based on the exploitation of ion transport proteins. The authors critically examine several transportome members, particularly Na+, K+, Ca2+, and Cl- channels, as well as organic solute carriers regarding their suitability as therapeutic targets. Synergistic effects resulting from the combined use of classical cytostatics with ion transport-inhibiting drugs are pointed out, and the capability of bispecific antibodies to function as anticancer drugs is discussed. As readers will also learn, the use of ion channel inhibitors could improve the outcome of radiotherapy because the development of radio-resistance during radiotherapeutic treatment often correlates with increases in the expression levels and conductance of ion channels. The translational topics of this volume form a bridge between biochemical research and therapeutic application. As part of a three-volume collection, this book will fascinate members of the active research community, as well as clinicians in the cancer field.

Christian Stock, Luis A. Pardo
R3,852 Discovery Miles 38 520 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This is the first of three volumes in the "Ion Channels & Transporters in Tumor Biology" collection, which discusses the function of ion transport proteins in cellular and systemic homeostasis. The authors highlight the role of the so-called transportome, which is defined by the entirety of ion transporters and ion channels. Thereby, readers will get a better understanding of the impact dysregulated ion transport has on the whole spectrum of cancer types. Cancers display deficiencies in several, sometimes interdependent members of the transportome. Clinicians will be interested in the fact that controlled expression of ion transport proteins dramatically impacts the life span of cancer patients, as shown in recent studies. These observations offer a promising outlook for biomedical scientists, as members of the transportome could be the tumor markers of tomorrow - both for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. As part of a three-volume collection, this book will fascinate members of the active research community, as well as clinicians from the cancer field.

Commentarium de oratione et de octo partibus orationis artis secundae Donati (German, Hardcover): Sergius Commentarium de oratione et de octo partibus orationis artis secundae Donati (German, Hardcover)
Sergius; Edited by Christian Stock
R5,131 Discovery Miles 51 310 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book deals with a text which has been a mystery to research concerning its temporal and spatial sphere up to now. Nevertheless it is of great importance to understand late ancient linguistics and their continuing influence on the Middle Ages. This comment to Ars maior by Donat being in the tradition of Servius has been known to be written by the Christian statesman and author Cassiodor. Nonetheless the authorship is still not solved because assigning the text to Cassiodor is less based on transmission, but rather on the rash theory of a French philologist who edited the text for the first time in the 17th century. With regard to content the tract is about the octo partes orationis, namely the eight parts of speech noun, pronoun, adverb, participle, conjunction, preposition and interjection. For today's user this text has been difficult to get hold of because just a part of the existing transmission was the basis for the first and only edition of 1679 and its reprint of 1848. Therefore a revised edition is placed at the beginning of this thesis which considers apart from the old version a still existing manuscript from early Carolingian times as well as a broad secondary transmission. The second part consists of a comment regarding an analysis of language and content. Its aim is to answer the questions concerning time and place of origin, its position in literary history, its author and its continuing influence. Consequently this specific version enriches the series of comments written by Donat transmitted from late ancient times. Additionally it contributes to modern linguistics regarding the research of early stages in language theory.
