Virtually every aspect of American culture has been influenced by
Irish immigrants and their descendants. This encyclopedia tells the
full story of the Irish-American experience, covering immigration,
assimilation, and achievement. The Irish have had a significant
impact on America across three centuries, helping to shape
politics, law, labor, war, literature, journalism, entertainment,
business, sports, and science. This encyclopedia explores why the
Irish came to America, where they settled, and how their
distinctive Irish-American identity was formed. Well-known Irish
Americans are profiled, but the work also captures the essence of
everyday life for Irish-Americans as they have assimilated,
established communities, and interacted with other ethnic groups.
The approximately 200 entries in this comprehensive, one-stop
reference are organized into four themes: the context of
Irish-American emigration; political and economic life; cultural
and religious life; and literature, the arts, and popular culture.
Each section offers a historical overview of the subject matter,
and the work is enriched by a selection of primary documents.
Demonstrates the intricate-and far-reaching-nature of the
Irish-American connection Covers the variety of the Irish-American
political experience in the North and South rather than focusing
only on northern populations Distinguishes between the experience
of Irish Protestants and Irish Catholics Highlights the Irish
propensity for inventiveness in America and Irish contributions to
business and technology Discusses the prominence of the Irish in
the Catholic Church in the United States
Against the all-too-familiar backdrop of corporate scandal and
greed, Charles Watson provides what he calls a blueprint to help
working men and women, from the tops of organizations to the
bottoms, step forward and help restore and defend the integrity of
business. Step by step, he outlines fifteen fundamental
commandments of honest business-from put people first to be your
own person-common-sensical approaches to making decisions, solving
problems, and taking action in ways that deliver results without
compromising on principles. Using dozens of compelling examples,
from companies large and small, Watson demonstrates how honesty,
integrity, and trust are at the root of such essential business
concepts as creativity and innovation, risk taking, collaboration,
attracting and retaining talented people, and anticipating and
exceeding customer expectations. He also tackles such complex
issues as how to prevent an ethical ego from becoming arrogant and
how to stand your ground when faced with unethical competition,
resistance from above or below, or the temptation to take the path
of least resistance. Ultimately, he provides practical, not
abstract or theoretical, recommendations for developing individuals
and organizations that encourage authentic relationships, act in
ways that society admires, and have the boldness to initiate action
with conviction. Watson also tackles such complex issues as how to
prevent an ethical ego from becoming arrogant and how to stand your
ground when faced with unethical competition, resistance from above
or below, or the temptation to take the path of least resistance.
He reminds us that integrity is derived from the Latin
integritas-oneness, a consistency of purpose, word, and deed.
Applying this principle, he provides practical, not abstract or
theoretical, recommendations for developing individuals and
organizations that encourage authentic relationships, celebrate
positive achievements, act in ways that society admires, and have
the boldness to initiate action with conviction. Ultimately, Watson
demonstrates that with courage and humility you can, indeed, do
well by doing good-not only at work, but in all aspects of your
life.
For 1,400 years, France has been in contact with Islam and Muslim
populations. This study explores their long relationship and
history, examining in particular the expansion and contraction of
France's "Islamic" Empire throughout the 20th century. This modern
empire essentially consisted of conquered territories inhabited by
Muslims and administered by Frenchmen. Thus far, France has avoided
a September 11-type terrorist attack despite the intra-country
presence of Muslim terrorist groups like the "Roubaix gang" and Bin
Laden's al-Qa'ida. Other Western countries can learn a great deal
from France's long and varied experiences. Watson addresses the
origins of Franco-Muslim contact and details early cases of French
expansion into the Islamic world. The bulk of the book, however,
focuses on the creation of the modern French Empire in Saharan and
Sudannic Africa, as well as in Syria and the Lebanese Mandates,
during the New Imperialism of the 19th and 20th centuries. Features
include a selection of pertinent documents that illustrate the
extent of French involvement with the Islamic world.
Designed for student research, this one-stop resource contains a
wealth of information, reference material, and analysis of the
collapse of communism in the Soviet Union. Combining narrative
description, analytical essays, lengthy biographical profiles, and
the text of key primary documents, Watson examines the reasons for
the decline and fall of the Soviet Union and its ruling Communist
party in 1991. Five essays provide a historical overview of the
rise and fall of the Soviet brand of communism; the evolution of
GorbacheV's perestroika reform policies; the costly Soviet imperial
legacy and the ten-year Afghan war; nationalism and the dissolution
of Soviet unity; and post-Soviet Russia under the leadership of
Boris Yeltsin. Ready-reference features include: a timeline of key
events; biographical profiles of 15 leaders involved in the decline
and fall of Soviet communism; the text of 22 documents including
writings by Gorbachev, Yeltsin and other key figures; a glossary of
terms; and an annotated bibliography of print and video materials.
Photos and maps complement the text.
Five essays examine how costly internal and external imperial
policies, a poorly functioning economy, and rising nationalism
among subject populations contributed to the demise of the Soviet
empire. Watson shows that GorbacheV's perestroika reforms, intended
to reform the party and the nation, ironically hastened the end,
and that the August 1991 coup attempt sealed the fate of Soviet
communism. The documents illustrate the reform attempt by Gorbachev
and his trail-blazing economic advisors; party opposition to his
reforms; the August 1991 coup attempt; the subsequent collapse of
the party and the Soviet Union; and the creation of the
Commonwealth of Independent States. The biographies explain the
careers of individuals involved in the decline and fall of Soviet
communism, including the last four Soviet leaders, whose policies
inadvertently led to the demise of the system; the principal
opponents of the reform; the leaders of the August 1991 coup
attempt; the first post-Soviet leader of Russia, Boris Yeltsin; and
the first post-Soviet Communist party leader in Russia, Gennady
Zyuganov. This comprehensive resource is ideal for student
research.
This compelling work draws on the experiences of America's most
successful business leaders to examine the issue of character in
business. Based on interviews with 125 CEOs of major U.S.
corporations, "Managing with Integrity" shows how it is possible
for the businessperson to do what is right and run a profitable
company at the same time. A wealth of practical examples and
anecdotes demonstrates that even today, corporate America's most
powerful figures tend to place what is ethical over what is
expedient and adhere to a higher standard than is generally assumed
by the public. By revealing the strategies these leaders employ in
the face of the myriad challenges to character encountered in the
day-to-day business world, the author provides invaluable insights
for executives, managers, supervisors, professionals, and
entrepreneurs confronted with their own ethical dilemmas. Readers
will find "Managing with Integrity" both an unusually candid look
at the dimensions of executive decision making and an eminently
practical guide to the development of a workable moral philosophy
for business.
Is it possible for a decent human being to succeed in business?
How does one find meaning in the business life? These are some of
the questions asked by the author as he explores the difficulties
associated with ethical thinking within the context of business.
Finding that those persons and organizations that aspire to serve
worthwhile purposes are ultimately the most profitable, he shows
how businesses can and do prosper when high ethical and moral
standards underlie executive decision making. Finally, the author
examines the concept of success in business and describes the
various dimensions of success which are most mentioned most often
by the senior executives interviewed for the book. Written in an
engaging and nontechnical style and filled with hundreds of
real-world examples, "Managing with Integrity" offers an important
counterweight to the cynicism that so often pervades popular
thinking about corporate America.
This title details the cover-up of one of the worst labour
tragedies in American history. The authors conducted an
archaeological dig of the site and include their observations. It
includes many illustrations. It will appeal to readers interested
in Irish and Irish-American history, labour history, and the
history of technology and medicine. In 1832, fifty-seven Irish
Catholic workers were brought to the United States to lay one of
the most difficult miles of American railway, Duffy's Cut of the
Pennsylvania Railroad. In the eyes of the company, these men were
expendable. Deaths were common during the building of the railway
but this stretch was worse than most. When cholera swept the camp,
basic medical attention and community support was denied to them.
In the end, all fifty-seven men died and were buried in a mass
unmarked grave. Their families in Ireland were never told what
happened to them. The company did its best to cover up the
incident, which was one of the worst labour tragedies in U.S.
history. This book tells the story of these men, the sacrifices
they made, and the mistreatment that claimed their lives. learn how
Irish labour built the railroads, and about the impact of the Great
Cholera Epidemic on American life. The authors argue that the
annihilation of the work crew came about because of the extreme
conditions of their employment, the prejudice of the surrounding
community, and vigilante violence that kept them isolated. The
authors' archaeological digs at the site and meticulous historical
research shed light on this tragic chapter in American labour
history.
Forms of group identity play a prominent role in everyday lives
and politics in northeast Africa. Case studies from Sudan,
Ethiopia, Uganda, and Kenya illustrate the way that identities are
formed and change over time, and how local, national, and
international politics are interwoven. Specific attention is paid
to the impact of modern weaponry, new technologies, religious
conversion, food and land shortages, international borders, civil
war, and displacement on group identities. Drawing on the expertise
of anthropologists, historians and geographers, these volumes
provide a significant account of a society profoundly shaped by
identity politics and contribute to a better understanding of the
nature of conflict and war, and forms of alliance and peacemaking,
thus providing a comprehensive portrait of this troubled
region.

A management professor and a religion professor team up to provide
a fresh, penetrating look at the obstacles that prevent people from
achieving their full potential. As authors Charles Watson and
Thomas Idinopulos demonstrate, inner demons like a lack of
integrity, mindless conformity, passivity, or greed conspire to
keep people from doing their best. But people can avoid becoming
their own worst enemies by using their uniquely human capacities to
their fullest—to be more responsible, more creative, more
self-disciplined, and more honest. Using these strengths, the
authors show, makes it easier to resolve ethical dilemmas, attain
peak performance without burning out, maintain a positive outlook,
and, ultimately, succeed in achieving treasured personal and
professional goals. A management professor and a religion professor

shoals that constantly test the integrity, fortitude, and tolerance
of employees. The stresses can be incapacitating. Faced with
competing agendas, high expectations, sclerotic bureaucracies, and
scarce resources, many people fall prey to demons that sap their
energy or, worse, encourage them to act against their own interests
by being dishonest or cutting corners. Are You Your Own Worst
Enemy? shows readers how to take responsibility for their actions
and their happiness. It discusses the on-going pressures,
temptations, and traps in the workplace and how ordinary people can
manage them constructively to remain effective and true to their
ideals. Specifically, it shows how learning the following behaviors
and attitudes can help people become more productive, more
valuable, and more fully satisfied: -Develop the capacity to make
things happen. -Make the most of who you are. -Sharpen thinking
skills. -Be the kind of person others want to be around. -Break the
chains of mindless routine. -Become an effective learner and
continue learning. -Master the art of self-discipline. -Act with
integrity. -Be of service to others. Using dozens of engaging
stories from people in all types of organizations, the authors show
how to overcome self-defeating behavior. The result for readers is
a blueprint for success, reduced stress, better work/life balance,
and fulfillment.

this will be essential reading for both professionals and students
in the field.
Presenting original studies and rich conceptual analyses, this
volume explores how cognitive and affective metrics can be used to
effectively assess, modify, and enhance learning and assessment
outcomes of simulations and games used in education and training.
The volume responds to the increasing use of computer-based
simulations and games across academic and professional sectors by
bringing together contributions from different research
communities, including K-12 and postsecondary education, medical,
and military contexts. Drawing on empirical results, the chapter
authors focus on the design and assessment of educational
simulations and games. They describe how quantitative and
qualitative metrics can be used effectively to evaluate and tailor
instructional resources to the cognitive and affective needs of the
individual learner. In doing so, the volume enhances understanding
of how games and simulations can intersect with the science of
learning to improve educational outcomes. Given its rigorous and
multidisciplinary approach, this book will prove an indispensable
resource for researchers and scholars in the fields of educational

It is innovative, fills a gap and will provide a deep and
meaningful deconstruction of the crossover between memory, early
American studies, race and heritage tourism that has wide appeal to
social sciences and humanities. To have a book on this important
theme by a team of humanities specialists will add a unique and
valuable dimension to an area that has traditionally been dominated
by social scientists. The book promises to deliver a solid
deconstruction of the touristic experience with racism, slavery and
the indigenous experience in America. The rhetorical and discourse
analytical perspectives will be unique and interesting. Good range
of empirical examples
Presenting original studies and rich conceptual analyses, this
volume reports on theoretical issues involved in the use of
simulations and games in educational assessment. Chapters consider
how technologies can be used to effectively assess, modify, and
enhance learning and assessment in education and training. By
highlighting theoretical issues arising from the use of games and
simulations as assessment tools for selection and classification,
training, and evaluation across educational and workplace contexts,
the volume offers both broad conceptual views on assessment, as
well as rich descriptions of various, context-specific
applications. Through a focus that includes both quantitative and
qualitative approaches, policy implications, meta-analysis, and
constructs, the volume highlights commonalities and divergence in
theoretical research being conducted in relation to K-12,
post-secondary, and military education and assessment. In doing so,
the collection enhances understanding of how games and simulations
can intersect with the science of learning to improve educational
outcomes. Given its rigorous and multidisciplinary approach, this
book will prove an indispensable resource for researchers and
scholars in the fields of educational assessment and evaluation,
educational technology, military psychology, and educational
psychology.
While some see the Miss American Pageant as hokey vestige of
another era, many remain enthralled by the annual Atlantic City
event. And whether you love it or hate it, no one can deny the
impact the contest has had on American popular culture-indeed, many
reality television shows seem to have taken cues from the pageant.
Founded in 1921, the Miss America Pageant has provided a
fascinating glimpse into how American standards of femininity have
been defined, projected, maintained, and challenged. At various
times, it has been praised as a positive role model for young
American women, protested as degrading to women by feminists, and
shamed by scandals, such as the one caused by the Penthouse photos
of Vanessa Williams in 1984. In this first interdisciplinary
anthology to examine this uniquely American event, scholars defend,
critique, and reflect on the pageant, grappling with themes like
beauty, race, the body, identity, kitsch, and consumerism. "There
She Is, Miss America" provides a fascinating examination of an
enduring American icon.
