As mobile technologies become ever more pervasive in modern society, users find increasingly innovative methods to take advantage of the newest developments and mobile devices. Data mining, in particular, has seen a vast shift as a result of wireless technologies. Studies of pedestrian behaviour have recently gained a lot of attention in a variety of disciplines, including urban planning, transportation, civil engineering, computer science/artificial intelligence and applied physics. Various kinds of models for simulating pedestrian behaviour have been suggested. Moreover, new technologies have been used to collect data about pedestrian movement patterns. The aim of this book is to document these new developments in research and modelling approaches. In this book, leading scholars representing different modelling approaches and fields of application have written chapters about the analysis and modelling of pedestrian movement patterns. Modelling approaches include cellular automata models, fluid dynamics, discrete choice models, rule-based models, multi-agent models and models of bounded rationality. The chapters illustrate that these model can be successfully used to simulate phenomena such as lane formation, crowding, activity-patterns, path decisions, micro-behaviour, impulse buying and store choice behaviour. Finally, the book contains some interesting application of this body of research. These chapters and paragraphs demonstrate the applied potential of models of pedestrian behaviour.
Societal trends have made the need for better travel demand
forecasts more urgent, at the same time as making people's travel
and activity patterns far more complex. Traditional traffic flow
models are no longer sophisticated enough to cope. Activity analysis is seen by many as the solution. It has had a
short but intense history in geography, urban planning, time use
research and, more recently, transportation. Pioneering
activity-based models have now been developed to the point where,
some argue, it is time to abandon the traditional four-step model
for transportation demand forecasting and to adopt activity-based
approaches instead. Others claim that the complexity of such
approaches, and their tremendous data requirements, prevent them
from having a significant impact. This book explores these claims and the issues associated with them. An introductory section outlines the debate. The body of the work is organised in four sections: modelling developments; theories and empirical analyses; data needs and data representation; and policy analysis. The final section discusses future research directions.
