As a young man, Samuel Johnson, one of the most celebrated English
authors of the eighteenth century, translated A Voyage to Abyssinia
by Jeronimo Lobo, a tome by a Portuguese missionary about the
country now known as Ethiopia. Far from being a potboiler, this
translation left an indelible imprint on Johnson. Demonstrating its
importance through a range of research and attentive close
readings, Abyssinia's Samuel Johnson highlights the lasting
influence of an African people on Johnson's oeuvre.
Wendy Laura Belcher uncovers traces of African discourse in
Johnson's only work conceived for the stage, Irene; several of his
short stories; and, of course, his most famous fiction, The History
of Rasselas, Prince of Abissinia. Throughout, Belcher provides a
much needed perspective on the power of the discourse of the other
to infuse European texts. Most pointedly, she illuminates how the
Western literary canon is globally produced, developing the
powerful metaphor of spirit possession to suggest that some texts
in the European canon are best understood as energumens--texts that
are spoken through. Her model of discursive possession offers a new
way of theorizing transcultural intertextuality, in particular how
Europe's others have co-constituted European representations.

The diary of Antera Duke is one of the earliest and most extensive
surviving documents written by an African residing in coastal West
Africa predating the arrival of British missionaries and officials
in the mid-19th century. Antera Duke (ca.1735-ca.1809) was a leader
and merchant in late eighteenth-century Old Calabar, a cluster of
Efik-speaking communities in the Cross River region. He resided in
Duke Town, forty miles from the Atlantic Ocean in modern-day
southeast Nigeria. His diary, written in trade English from 18
January 1785 to 31 January 1788, is a candid account of daily life
in an African community during a period of great historical
interest. Written by a major African merchant at the height of
Calabar's overseas commerce, it provides valuable information on
Old Calabar's economic activity both with other African businessmen
and with European ship captains who arrived to trade for slaves,
produce and provisions. It is also unique in chronicling the
day-to-day social and cultural life of a vibrant African community.
Antera Duke's diary is much more than a historical curiosity; it is
the voice of a leading African-Atlantic merchant who lived during
an age of expanding cross-cultural trade. The book reproduces the
original diary of Antera Duke, as transcribed by a Scottish
missionary, Arthur W. Wilkie, ca. 1907 and published by OUP in
1956. A new rendering of the diary into standard English appears on
facing pages, and the editors have advanced the annotation
completed by anthropologist Donald Simmons in 1954 by editing 71
and adding 158 footnotes. The updated reference information
incorporates new primary and secondary source material on Old
Calabar, and notes where their editorial decisions differ from
those made by Wilkie and Simmons. Chapters 1 and 2 detail the
eighteenth-century Calabar slave and produce trades, emphasizing
how personal relationships between British and Efik merchants
formed the nexus of trade at Old Calabar. To build a picture of Old
Calabar's regional trading networks, Chapter 3 draws upon
information contained in Antera Duke's diary, other contemporary
sources, and shipping records from the 1820s. Chapter 4 places
information in Antera Duke's diary in the context of
eighteenth-century Old Calabar political, social and religious
history, charting how Duke Town eclipsed Old Town and Creek Town
through military power, lineage strength and commercial acumen.
Future History traces the ways that English and American writers
oriented themselves along an East-West axis to fantasize their
place in the world. The book builds on new transoceanic scholarship
and recent calls to approach early American studies from a global
perspective. Such scholarship has largely focused on the early
national period; Bross's work begins earlier and considers the
intertwined identities of America, other English colonial sites and
metropolitan England during a period before nation-state identities
were hardened into the forms we know them today, when an English
empire was nascent, not realized, and when a global perspective
such as we might recognize it was just coming into focus for early
modern Europeans. The author examines works that imagine England on
a global stage in the Americas and East Indies just as-and in some
cases even before-England occupied such spaces in force. Future
History considers works written from the 1620s to the 1670s, but
the center of gravity of Future History is writing at the
mid-century, that is, writings coincident with the Interregnum, a
time when England plotted and launched ambitious, often violent
schemes to conquer, colonize or otherwise appropriate other lands,
driven by both mercantile and religious desires.

In 1899, Carrie Chapman Catt, who succeeded Susan B. Anthony as
head of the National American Women Suffrage Association, argued
that it was the "duty" of U.S. women to help lift the inhabitants
of its new island possessions up from "barbarism" to
"civilization," a project that would presumably demonstrate the
capacity of U.S. women for full citizenship and political rights.
Catt, like many suffragists in her day, was well-versed in the
language of empire, and infused the cause of suffrage with
imperialist zeal in public debate. Unlike their predecessors, who
were working for votes for women within the context of slavery and
abolition, the next generation of suffragists argued their case
against the backdrop of the U.S. expansionism into Indian and
Mormon territory at home as well as overseas in the Philippines,
Puerto Rico, and Hawaii. In this book, Allison L. Sneider carefully
examines these simultaneous political movements--woman suffrage and
American imperialism--as inextricably intertwined phenomena,
instructively complicating the histories of both.

the true history of Hausa women and their reception of Islam's

South Carolina's Indian-American governor Nikki Haley recently
dismissed one of her principal advisors when his membership to the
ultra-conservative Council of Conservative Citizens (CCC) came to
light. Among the CCC's many concerns is intermarriage and race
mixing. According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, in 2001 the
CCC website included a message that read "God is the one who
divided mankind into different races.... Mixing the races is
rebelliousness against God. " Beyond the irony of a CCC member
working for an Indian-American, the episode reveals America's
continuing struggle with race, racial integration, and race mixing.
The Color Factor shows that the emergent twenty-first-century
recognition of race mixing and the relative advantages of
light-skinned, mixed-race people represents a "back to the future "
moment--a re-emergence of one salient feature of race in America
that dates to its founding. Each chapter addresses from a
historical perspective a topic in the current literature on
mixed-race and color. The approach is economic and empirical, but
the text is accessible to social scientists more generally. The
historical evidence concludes that we will not really understand
race until we understand how American attitudes toward race were
shaped by race mixing.
The nineteenth-century middle-class ideal of the married woman was
of a chaste and diligent wife focused on being a loving mother,
with few needs or rights of her own. The modern woman, by contrast,
was partner to a new model of marriage, one in which she and her
husband formed a relationship based on greater sexual and
psychological equality. In Making Marriage Modern, Christina
Simmons narrates the development of this new companionate marriage
ideal, which took hold in the early twentieth century and prevailed
in American society by the 1940s.
The first challenges to public reticence to discuss sexual
relations between husbands and wives came from social hygiene
reformers, who advocated for a scientific but conservative sex
education to combat prostitution and venereal disease. A more
radical group of feminists, anarchists, and bohemians opposed the
Victorian model of marriage and even the institution of marriage.
Birth control advocates such as Emma Goldman and Margaret Sanger
openly championed women's rights to acquire and use effective
contraception. The "companionate marriage" emerged from these
efforts. This marital ideal was characterized by greater emotional
and sexuality intimacy for both men and women, use of birth control
to create smaller families, and destigmatization of divorce in
cases of failed unions. Simmons examines what she calls the
"flapper" marriage, in which free-spirited young wives enjoyed the
early years of marriage, postponing children and domesticity. She
looks at the feminist marriage in which women imagined greater
equality between the sexes in domestic and paid work and sex. And
she explores the African American "partnership marriage," which
often included wives' employment and drew more heavily on the
involvement of the community and extended family. Finally, she
traces how these modern ideals of marriage were promoted in sexual
advice literature and marriage manuals of the period.
Though male dominance persisted in companionate marriages,
Christina Simmons shows how they called for greater independence
and satisfaction for women and a new female heterosexuality. By
raising women's expectations of marriage, the companionate ideal
also contained within it the seeds of second-wave feminists'
demands for transforming the institution into one of true equality
between the sexes.
Timothy Snyder opens a new path in the understanding of modern
nationalism and twentieth-century socialism by presenting the often
overlooked life of Kazimierz Kelles-Krauz, an important Polish
thinker at the beginning of the twentieth century. During his brief
life in Poland, Paris, and Vienna, Kelles-Krauz influenced or
infuriated most of the leaders of the various socialist movements
of Central Europe and France. His central ideas ultimately were not
accepted by the socialist mainstream at the time of his death.
However, a century later, we see that they anticipated late
twentieth-century understanding on the importance of nationalism as
a social force and the parameters of socialism in political theory
and praxis. Kelles-Krauz was one of the only theoreticians of his
age to advocate Jewish national rights as being equivalent to, for
example, Polish national rights, and he correctly saw the struggle
for national sovereignty as being central to future events in
Europe. This was the first major monograph in English devoted to
Kelles-Krauz, and it includes maps and personal photographs of
Kelles-Krauz, his colleagues, and his family.
Nearing the end of his career as a ship surgeon, he agreed in 1817
to take a three year posting to St Helena. Stokoe set out for St
Helena on HMS Conqueror in 1817. At St Helena there was discord
following the Governor, Lieutenant-General Sir Hudson Lowe's
controversial decision to dismiss Napoleon's doctor, Barry O'Mara.
About this time, Napoleon asked that Mr Stokoe, who had once
attended him and who he understood was returning to St Helena,
might attend him again 'or would the Governor authorize some other
English doctor to come, providing he sign similar conditions as had
been accepted by Stokoe in the past.' Immediately after, Mr Stokoe
arrived at St Helena, was put under arrest and tried on varying
counts-seven in all. The whole was found proven. The third
indictment read, 'That he had signed a paper purporting to be a
bulletin of General Bonaparte's health, and divulged the same to
the General and his attendants contrary to orders, ' and the
seventh, 'That he had contrary to his duty, and the character of a
British Naval Officer, communicated to General Bonaparte or his
attendant an infamous and calumnious imputation cast upon
Lieutenant-General Sir Hudson Lowe. etc. by Barry O'Meara, late
surgeon in the Royal Navy' (also now dismissed) 'implying that Sir
Hudson Lowe had practiced with the said O'Meara to induce him to
put an end to the existence of General Bonaparte. ' Stokoe, though
dismissed the Navy, was put on half-pay. At Stokoe's treatment
Napoleon, enraged, refused the future services of British doctors.
This book is Stokoe's own defense, another book with damning
evidence against the notorious Governor-Sir Hudson Lowe
