Self-Modifying Systems in Biology and Cognitive Science, Volume 6 - A New Framework for Dynamics, Information and Complexity... Self-Modifying Systems in Biology and Cognitive Science, Volume 6 - A New Framework for Dynamics, Information and Complexity (Hardcover)
G. Kampis
R2,506 Discovery Miles 25 060 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The theme of this book is the self-generation of information by the self-modification of systems. The author explains why biological and cognitive processes exhibit identity changes in the mathematical and logical sense. This concept is the basis of a new organizational principle which utilizes shifts of the internal semantic relations in systems. There are mathematical discussions of various classes of systems (Turing machines, input-output systems, synergetic systems, non-linear dynamics etc), which are contrasted with the author's new principle. The most important implications of this include a new conception on the nature of information and which also provides a new and coherent conceptual view of a wide class of natural systems. This book merits the attention of all philosophers and scientists concerned with the way we create reality in our mathematical representations of the world and the connection those representations have with the way things really are.

Natural and Artificial Reasoning - An Exploration of Modelling Human Thinking (Hardcover, 2014 ed.): Tom Addis Natural and Artificial Reasoning - An Exploration of Modelling Human Thinking (Hardcover, 2014 ed.)
Tom Addis
R2,218 R1,855 Discovery Miles 18 550 Save R363 (16%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

What are the limitations of computer models and why do we still not have working models of people that are recognizably human? This is the principle puzzle explored in this book where ideas behind systems that behave intelligently are described and different philosophical issues are touched upon. The key to human behavior is taken to be intelligence and the ability to reason about the world. A strong scientific approach is taken, but first it was required to understand what a scientific approach could mean in the context of both natural and artificial systems. A theory of intelligence is proposed that can be tested and developed in the light of experimental results. The book illustrates that intelligence is much more than just behavior confined to a unique person or a single computer program within a fixed time frame. Some answers are unraveled and some puzzles emerge from these investigations and experiments. Natural and Artificial Reasoning provides a few steps of an exciting journey that began many centuries ago with the word 'why?'

Active Robust Optimization: Optimizing for Robustness of Changeable Products (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019): Shaul Salomon Active Robust Optimization: Optimizing for Robustness of Changeable Products (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Shaul Salomon
R2,657 Discovery Miles 26 570 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book presents a novel framework, known as Active Robust Optimization, which provides the tools for evaluating, comparing and optimizing changeable products. Since any product that can change its configuration during normal operation may be considered a "changeable product," the framework is widely applicable. Further, the methodology enables designers to use adaptability to deal with uncertainties and so avoid over-conservative designs. Offering a comprehensive overview of the framework, including its unique features, such as its ability to optimally respond to uncertain situations, the book also defines a new class of optimization problem and examines the effects of changes in various parameters on their solution. Lastly, it discusses innovative approaches for solving the problem and demonstrates these with two examples from different fields in engineering design: optimization of an optical table and optimization of a gearbox.

Kun Bai, Kok-Meng Lee
R3,268 Discovery Miles 32 680 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book introduces and illustrates modeling, sensing, and control methods for analyzing, designing, and developing spherical motors. It systematically presents models for establishing the relationships among the magnetic fields, position/orientation and force/torque, while also providing time-efficient solutions to assist researchers and engineers in studying and developing these motors. In order to take full advantage of spherical motors' compact structure in practical applications, sensing and control methods that utilize their magnetic fields and eliminate the need to install external sensors for feedback are proposed. Further, the book investigates for the first time spherical motors' force/torque manipulation capability, and proposes algorithms enabling the ball-joint-like end-effector for haptic use based on these motors' hybrid position/force actuation modes. While systematically presenting approaches to their design, sensing and control, the book also provides many examples illustrating the implementation issues readers may encounter.

Computational Genetic Regulatory Networks: Evolvable, Self-organizing Systems (Hardcover, 2013 ed.): Johannes F. Knabe Computational Genetic Regulatory Networks: Evolvable, Self-organizing Systems (Hardcover, 2013 ed.)
Johannes F. Knabe
R2,638 Discovery Miles 26 380 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Genetic Regulatory Networks (GRNs) in biological organisms are primary engines for cells to enact their engagements with environments, via incessant, continually active coupling. In differentiated multicellular organisms, tremendous complexity has arisen in the course of evolution of life on earth. Engineering and science have so far achieved no working system that can compare with this complexity, depth and scope of organization. Abstracting the dynamics of genetic regulatory control to a computational framework in which artificial GRNs in artificial simulated cells differentiate while connected in a changing topology, it is possible to apply Darwinian evolution in silico to study the capacity of such developmental/differentiated GRNs to evolve. In this volume an evolutionary GRN paradigm is investigated for its evolvability and robustness in models of biological clocks, in simple differentiated multicellularity, and in evolving artificial developing 'organisms' which grow and express an ontogeny starting from a single cell interacting with its environment, eventually including a changing local neighbourhood of other cells. These methods may help us understand the genesis, organization, adaptive plasticity, and evolvability of differentiated biological systems, and may also provide a paradigm for transferring these principles of biology's success to computational and engineering challenges at a scale not previously conceivable.

Fundamentals of the Fuzzy Logic-Based Generalized Theory of Decisions (Hardcover, 2013 ed.): Rafik Aziz Aliev Fundamentals of the Fuzzy Logic-Based Generalized Theory of Decisions (Hardcover, 2013 ed.)
Rafik Aziz Aliev
R3,445 Discovery Miles 34 450 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Every day decision making and decision making in complex human-centric systems are characterized by imperfect decision-relevant information. Main drawback of the existing decision theories is namely incapability to deal with imperfect information and modeling vague preferences. Actually, a paradigm of non-numerical probabilities in decision making has a long history and arose also in Keynes's analysis of uncertainty. There is a need for further generalization - a move to decision theories with perception-based imperfect information described in NL. The languages of new decision models for human-centric systems should be not languages based on binary logic but human-centric computational schemes able to operate on NL-described information. Development of new theories is now possible due to an increased computational power of information processing systems which allows for computations with imperfect information, particularly, imprecise and partially true information, which are much more complex than computations over numbers and probabilities.

The monograph exposes the foundations of a new decision theory with imperfect decision-relevant information on environment and a decision maker's behavior. This theory is based on the synthesis of the fuzzy sets theory with perception-based information and the probability theory.

The book is self containing and represents in a systematic way the decision theory with imperfect information into the educational systems. The book will be helpful for teachers and students of universities and colleges, for managers and specialists from various fields of business and economics, production and social sphere.

Non-axiomatic Logic: A Model Of Intelligent Reasoning (Hardcover): Pei Wang Non-axiomatic Logic: A Model Of Intelligent Reasoning (Hardcover)
Pei Wang
R2,394 Discovery Miles 23 940 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book provides a systematic and comprehensive description of Non-Axiomatic Logic, which is the result of the author's research for about three decades.Non-Axiomatic Logic is designed to provide a uniform logical foundation for Artificial Intelligence, as well as an abstract description of the "laws of thought" followed by the human mind. Different from "mathematical" logic, where the focus is the regularity required when demonstrating mathematical conclusions, Non-Axiomatic Logic is an attempt to return to the original aim of logic, that is, to formulate the regularity in actual human thinking. To achieve this goal, the logic is designed under the assumption that the system has insufficient knowledge and resources with respect to the problems to be solved, so that the "logical conclusions" are only valid with respect to the available knowledge and resources. Reasoning processes according to this logic covers cognitive functions like learning, planning, decision making, problem solving, etc. This book is written for researchers and students in Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Science, and can be used as a textbook for courses at graduate level, or upper-level undergraduate, on Non-Axiomatic Logic.
