Doctoring Traditions - Ayurveda, Small Technologies, and Braided Sciences (Paperback): Projit Bihari Mukharji Doctoring Traditions - Ayurveda, Small Technologies, and Braided Sciences (Paperback)
Projit Bihari Mukharji
R1,405 Discovery Miles 14 050 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Like many of the traditional medicines of South Asia, Ayurvedic practice changed dramatically in the later nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. With Doctoring Tradition, Projit Bihari Mukharji offers a close look at that transformation, upending the widely held yet little-examined belief that it was the result of the introduction of Western anatomical knowledge and cadaveric dissection. Rather, Mukharji reveals, what instigated those changes were a number of small technologies that were introduced in the period by Ayurvedic physicians, men who were simultaneously Victorian gentlemen and members of a particular Bengali caste. The introduction of these devices, including thermometers, watches, and microscopes, Mukharji shows, ultimately led to a dramatic reimagining of the body. The new Ayurvedic body that thus emerged by the 1930s, while different from the biomedical body, was nonetheless largely compatible with it. The more incompatible elements of the old Ayurvedic body were then rendered therapeutically indefensible and impossible to imagine in practice. The new Ayurvedic medicine, therefore, was the product not of an embrace of Western approaches, but of a creative attempt to develop a viable alternative to the Western tradition by braiding together elements drawn from both the West and the East.

The Four Qualities of Effective Physicians - Practical Ayurvedic Wisdom for Modern Physicians (Paperback): Claudia Welch The Four Qualities of Effective Physicians - Practical Ayurvedic Wisdom for Modern Physicians (Paperback)
Claudia Welch; Foreword by Robert Svoboda
R733 Discovery Miles 7 330 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

What defines an excellent doctor? He or she must certainly have a wealth of scientific knowledge and practical experience - but is that enough? Dr Claudia Welch explores how the effectiveness of a physician extends far beyond the ability to prescribe correct treatments, identifying how to enhance the efficacy of medicine using four core doctoring principals: theoretical knowledge, practical experience, dexterity and 'purity'. Drawing on ancient Eastern medical traditions, modern Western science and her own experience, Dr Welch examines how we know what we know, the mechanics of doctor-patient emotional contagion, and the degree to which a patient's sensory experience in a medical office affects their experience of treatments delivered. She also offers practical steps to cultivating more refined perceptive abilities and improving results. Dr Welch's book will be essential reading for all healthcare practitioners interested in understanding how to enhance the therapeutic outcomes of their practice, including doctors of Ayurveda, Chinese medicine and Naturopathy, as well as Western medical professionals and other complementary health practitioners.

Healing Justice - Holistic Self-Care for Change Makers (Paperback): Loretta Pyles Healing Justice - Holistic Self-Care for Change Makers (Paperback)
Loretta Pyles
R1,679 Discovery Miles 16 790 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In the context of multiple forms of global economic, social, and cultural oppression, along with intergenerational trauma, burnout, and public services retrenchment, this book offers a framework and set of inquiries and practices for social workers, activists, community organizers, counselors, and other helping professionals. Healing justice, a term that has emerged in social movements in the last decade, is taught as a practice of connecting to the whole self, what many are conditioned to ignore - the body, mind-heart, spirit, community, and natural world. Drawing from the East-West modalities of mindfulness, yoga, and Ayurveda, the author introduces six capabilities - mindfulness and compassion; critical thinking and curiosity; and effort and equanimity - which can guide practitioners on a transformative and empowering journey that can ultimately make them and their colleagues more effective in their work. Using case studies, critical analysis, and skill sharing, self-care is presented as an act of resistance to disconnection, marginalization, and internalized oppression. Healing justice is a trauma-informed practice that empowers social practitioners to cultivate the conditions that might allow them to feel more connected to themselves, their clients, colleagues, and communities. The book also engages critically with self-care practices, including investigation into the science of mindfulness, cultural appropriation, and the commodification of self-care. The message is clear that mindfulness-based practices are not a panacea for personal, inter-personal, or political problems. But, they can put practitioners in a more authentic and powerful place to work from, which is particularly important in a world where there is more connection to technology, ideologies, and people who share one's beliefs, and less connection to the natural world, people who are different, and the parts of oneself that one tends to reject. The book also offers suggestions for how to share self-care practices with community members who have less access to wellness.

Prakriti - Your Ayurvedic Constitution (Paperback, 2nd Revised edition): Robert E. Svoboda Prakriti - Your Ayurvedic Constitution (Paperback, 2nd Revised edition)
Robert E. Svoboda
R408 R386 Discovery Miles 3 860 Save R22 (5%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Dr. Svoboda's original work on the constitutional types in Ayurveda has been considered a classic for many years. His new revision and expansion of the subject comes after much further research and practical experience. Dr. Vasant Lad points out: "The healing science of Ayurveda is based totally upon the knowledge of "prakriti," the individual constitution. If every individual knows his own constitution, then one can understand, for instance, what is a good diet and style of life for oneself. One man's food is another man's poison. Therefore, to make one's life healthy, happy and balanced, the knowledge of constitution is absolutely necessary." (Dr. Vasant Lad is the author of Ayurveda: The Science of Self-Healing, and co-author of The Yoga of Herbs.)

A decade ago, Deepak Chopra, M.D., wrote the international bestseller, Perfect Health, the first practical guide to harnessing the healing power of the mind. Describing how breakthroughs in physics and medicine were underscoring the validity of a 5,000-year-old medical system from India known as Ayurveda, it went on to reveal how this ancient wisdom could be applied to everyday life. Now, in celebration of this classic work, this new edition has been revised and updated to include the very latest medical research.

Although we experience our bodies as solid, they are in fact more like fires that are constantly being consumed and renewed. We grow new stomach linings every five days, for instance; our skin is new every five weeks; each year, ninety-eight per cent of the total number of atoms in our bodies is replaced. Ayurveda gives us the tools to intervene at this quantum level, where we are being created anew each day. It also reveals how freedom from sickness depends on contacting our own awareness, bringing it into balance and then extending that balance to the body.

Perfect Health provides a complete step-by-step programme of mind-body medicine tailored to individual needs. A quiz identifies the reader’s mind-body type: thin, restless Vata; enterprising, efficient Pitta; tranquil, steady Kapha: or any combination of these three. It is this body type that forms the basis of a specific Ayurvedic programme of diet, stress reduction, neuromuscular integration, exercise, and daily routines. The result is a total health plan that will re-establish the body’s essential balance with nature, strengthen the mind-body connection, and use the power of quantum healing to transcend the ordinary limitations of disease and aging. In short, this is the ultimate guide to achieving Perfect Health.

DEEPAK CHOPRA has written twenty-six books, including the international bestseller The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success. In 1999, Time magazine selected Dr. Chopra as one of the Top 100 Icons and Heroes of the Century, describing him as ‘the poet-prophet of alternative medicine’. He currently serves as CEO and founder of The Chopra Center for Well Being in La Jolla, California.
