Historical Genesis - from Adam to Abraham (Hardcover): Richard James Fischer Historical Genesis - from Adam to Abraham (Hardcover)
Richard James Fischer
R1,406 Discovery Miles 14 060 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The beginning chapters of Genesis come alive with characters, places, and events almost totally unknown outside of the Bible itself except when illuminated by the fascinating history of the ancient Near East. Did a man we call Adam actually exist? Was someone known to us as Noah warned of a cataclysmic flood and instructed to build an ark? Could the Tower of Babel incident actually have happened? When archaeological artifacts and literature began to surface from ancient Mesopotamia (present-day Iraq) nearly 200 years ago, only a handful of archaeologists dared to point out that there appeared to be a close relationship between Genesis and the ruminations of the Sumerians and Akkadians who once lived there. Often enduring great personal hardships, these archaeological pioneers produced copious translations and marvelous insights. Cuneiform texts compiled from almost two centuries of exploration have added significantly to our understanding of the historical underpinnings of the Old Testament. The reader will gain a new appreciation for the historical integrity of Genesis 2-11, and marvel at the evidence that the persons, places, and events depicted, though long misunderstood, could be real. Daniel's Spiel - Apocalyptic Literacy in the Book of Daniel (Paperback): Jin Hee Han Daniel's Spiel - Apocalyptic Literacy in the Book of Daniel (Paperback)
Jin Hee Han
R1,077 Discovery Miles 10 770 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The hostile regime that set out to annihilate the Jewish religion and culture forms the background of the Book of Daniel. Jin Hee Han's book, Daniel's Spiel: Apocalyptic Literacy in the Book of Daniel, identifies the main agenda behind the creation of the book of Daniel, explaining how Daniel promotes an alternative discourse in opposition to the Hellenistic regime in the second century B.C.E. The word "Spiel" in the title refers to Daniel's strategy of using apocalyptic language to give the people hope, as he offered them a discourse of resistance meant to keep alive their anticipation of God's inevitable triumph over the evil regime that tormented them. Author Jin Hee Han provides modern readers with useful insights into why the Book of Daniel was created and offers clues of how it might be interpreted today.

Imperial Cults and the Apocalypse of John - Reading Revelation in the Ruins (Hardcover): Steven J. Friesen Imperial Cults and the Apocalypse of John - Reading Revelation in the Ruins (Hardcover)
Steven J. Friesen
R4,075 Discovery Miles 40 750 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

After more than a century of debate about the significance of imperial cults for the interpretation of Revelation, this is the first study to examine both the archaeological evidence and the Biblical text in depth. Friesen argues that a detailed analysis of imperial cults as they were practised in the first century CE in the region where John was active allows us to understand John's criticism of his society's dominant values. He demonstrates the importance of imperial cults for society at the time when Revelation was written, and shows the ways in which John refuted imperial cosmology.

Jesus Was a Feminist - What the Gospels Reveal about His Revolutionary Perspective (Paperback): Leonard Swidler Jesus Was a Feminist - What the Gospels Reveal about His Revolutionary Perspective (Paperback)
Leonard Swidler

The result of four decades of research, Jesus Was a Feminist compellingly presents the case that Jesus treated women equally with men, and he boldly broke the customs of his day to involve them in his work. Renowned scholar and leader among liberal Catholics Leonard Swidler examines all gospel texts involving women, asserts that women were involved in the writing of two of the gospels, and outlines the importance of women in Jesus' ministry and the creation and development of the early church. He shows how Jesus was a feminist and modern Christians should be too. Click here for the Detailed Table of Contents (pdf)

A Shorter Commentary on Romans by Karl Barth - With an Introductory Essay by Maico Michielin (Hardcover, New Ed): Maico M.... A Shorter Commentary on Romans by Karl Barth - With an Introductory Essay by Maico Michielin (Hardcover, New Ed)
Maico M. Michielin
R4,255 Discovery Miles 42 550 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

First published in 1959, Karl Barth's A Shorter Commentary on Romans originated as the manuscript for a course of extra-mural lectures held in Basle during the winter of 1940-41. During this time, Barth continued to resist the Nazi regime and its influence on the Reformed Church as he did when he was in Bonn. This reissue of Barth's A Shorter Commentary on Romans links to the renewed interest today in a 'theological' interpretation of Scripture. In response to the modern preoccupation with what lies behind the text (the author's context), and to a postmodern preoccupation with what lies in front of the text (the reader's context), both theologians and biblical scholars are asking the following questions: 'What is the relationship between the biblical text, interpreter and God?' 'Can the Bible be read both as an historical document and as a text that speaks to us today, and if so, how can it do so?' Barth's commentarial practice as exemplified in A Shorter Commentary on Romans answers these questions. This book is presented in two parts: first, an introduction by Maico Michielin helping readers understand Barth's theological exegetical approach to interpreting Scripture and showing readers how to let Scripture address theological and ethical concerns for today; the main body of the book then follows - the republication of the original English translation by D.H. van Daalen of Barth's A Shorter Commentary on Romans.

The Book of Ezekiel and its Influence (Hardcover, New edition): Johannes Tromp The Book of Ezekiel and its Influence (Hardcover, New edition)
Johannes Tromp; Edited by Henk Jan de Jonge
R4,272 Discovery Miles 42 720 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Book of the Old Testament prophet Ezekiel (6th century B.C.E.) is a book of forceful language and impressive images. Its message is often clear, sometimes mysterious. The book had great impact in Jewish and early Christian literature as well as in western art. This book deals with the intentions of the book of Ezekiel, but also focuses on its use by subsequent writers, editors or artists. It traces Ezekiel's influence in Jesus' teaching about the Kingdom of God, in Paul, the Gospels, and Revelation, and also shows that Ezekiel's imagery, via Jewish mysticism, influenced the visionary art of William Blake. Presenting contributions from leading biblical scholars in Oxford and Leiden, based on their unique collaborative research, this book will be of interest to a wide range of scholars working in the field of biblical studies, including those studying the Hebrew Bible, its early versions, 'inter-testamental' Judaism, New Testament and Early Christianity, and the reception of Biblical literature in later centuries.

The Other Gospels - Non-Canonical Gospel Texts (Paperback, Annotated Ed): Ron Cameron The Other Gospels - Non-Canonical Gospel Texts (Paperback, Annotated Ed)
Ron Cameron
R705 Discovery Miles 7 050 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

An important collection of apocryphal and pseudepigraphic texts from the first and second centuries demonstrating how it is not only from the Bible that information upon Christianity's origins can be found. Sixteen texts from the remains of the non-canonical gospels, some of which originate from the Nag Hammadi library and only recently made available, communicate stories about Jesus. Among them are: The Dialogue of the Saviour, Papyrus Oxyrhynchus 840, The Gospel of the Hebrews and The Acts of Pilate. The collection shows how the memory of Jesus was kept alive in early Christianity through the communication of such stories and sayings. With a central focus on the literary aspects of the text, Professor Cameron reveals in introductions for each gospel, its literary forms, sources, the original language of the text, the languages in which the text was preserved, the date and place of composition, discovery and publication. The gospels are subsequently included; one text, the translation of the Apocryphon of James, is published for the first time. As new critical analysis develops to provide the opportunity to examine the history of the literature, in which Jesus's traditions were passed on, so the non-canonical texts are becoming more significant. This selection of 'other' gospels allows non-canonical texts to be used as primary sources to further clarify gospel traditions. The Editor: Professor Cameron is a specialist in form-critical analysis and is Professor of Religion at Wesleyan University.

Let Me See Your Form - Seeking Poetic Structure in the Song of Songs (Paperback): Phillip D. Roberts Let Me See Your Form - Seeking Poetic Structure in the Song of Songs (Paperback)
Phillip D. Roberts
R1,876 Discovery Miles 18 760 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This study tackles the problem of the Song of Song's structure by beginning at the bottom, the microstructure of the Song, rather than at the top. By employing a new type of rhetorical method, Professor Roberts defines each of the minimal structural units of the Song by identifying the formal poetic features that mark its opening and closing, coupled with the poetic features that create cohesion within it. Moving up the Song's structural ladder, larger units are identified with the same technique. While this study does not identify an overall structure, it does demonstrate how recognition of these formal structuring devices can help the interpreter define the structural units of the Song with far greater precision. The final chapter presents a catalog of these formal, poetic features that typically mark the opening and closure of structural units in the Song, as well as those that effect cohesion. Within is a catalog that can be refined and enlarged by application of the same method to other poetic texts. Other exegetical insights abound. Professor Roberts demonstrates a more highly structured pattern of the wasfs than has been recognized heretofore, and proposes a new interpretation of the adjuration refrain. He identifies a type of phonological anacrusis employed numerous times in the Song, and addresses almost every text-critical issue in the Song, many of which are resolved by attention to poetic structuring devices.

Genesis - Interpretation (Hardcover): Walter Brueggemann Genesis - Interpretation (Hardcover)

In his clear and readable style Walter Brueggemann presents Genesis as a single book set within the context of the whole of biblical revelation. He sees his task as bringing the text close to the faith and ministry of the church. He interprets Genesis as a proclamation of God's decisive dealing with creation rather than as history of myth. Brueggemann's impressive perspective illuminates the study of the first book of the Bible.

Interpretation: A Bible Commentary for Teaching and Preaching is a distinctive resource for those who interpret the Bible in the church. Planned and written specifically for teaching and preaching needs, this critically acclaimed biblical commentary is a major contribution to scholarship and ministry.

Abraham, Israel and the Nations - The Patriarchal Promise and its Covenantal Development in Genesis (Hardcover): Paul R.... Abraham, Israel and the Nations - The Patriarchal Promise and its Covenantal Development in Genesis (Hardcover)
Paul R. Williamson
R6,019 Discovery Miles 60 190 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The divine promises to Abraham have long been recognized as a key to the book of Genesis as a whole. But their variety, often noted, also raises literary and theological problems. Why do they differ each time, and how are they related to each other and to the story of Abraham? Williamson focuses on the promises in Genesis 15 and 17, and concludes that they are concerned with two distinct but related issues. Genesis 15 guarantees God's promise to make Abraham into a great nation, while Genesis 17 focuses chiefly on God's promise to mediate blessing (through Abraham) to the nations. The two chapters are connected, however, by the theme of an individual, royal descendant who will come from the nation (Israel) and mediate blessing to all the nations of the earth.

Rabbi Jeremiah (Paperback): Jacob Neusner Rabbi Jeremiah (Paperback)
Jacob Neusner
R1,080 Discovery Miles 10 800 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This analysis of how the Rabbis of the Talmud and Midrash made Jeremiah one of their own shows how Rabbinic Judaism rehearses the Prophetic message. Jeremiah offered hope to renew the relation that was broken, and Yohanan ben Zakkai promised another mode of atonement, involving individual conviction, and conduct. Joining the two yields, the thesis of this book is: in the case of Jeremiah Rabbinic Judaism continues and recapitulates Prophetic Judaism. Prophet and Rabbi confront the same kind of crisis with the same theological outcome. The Prophetic response to and the Rabbinic reading of the event of the destruction of the Temple of Jerusalem- the certainty of God's pardon and love- intersect. The problem of this study of Rabbi Jeremiah is to describe precisely how the Rabbis of the formative canon in the case of Jeremiah naturalized to their system- thus Rabbinized- Prophecy. In taking over the heritage of ancient Israelite Prophecy and law, have the Rabbis subverted Prophecy's religious vision or adapted and adopted it, making that vision their own? By identifying the principal propositions of the Prophet and by examining both the Rabbinic reading of the Prophet and the Rabbinic theology of those same propositions, Neusner answers that question.

Holy Murder - Abraham, Isaac, and the Rhetoric of Sacrifice (Paperback): Larry Powell, William R. Self Holy Murder - Abraham, Isaac, and the Rhetoric of Sacrifice (Paperback)
Larry Powell, William R. Self
R1,059 Discovery Miles 10 590 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume examines one of the most controversial stories in the Bible the akedah, or sacrifice of Isaac recounted in the 22nd chapter of Genesis. Today, more than three thousand years later, the story continues to evoke controversy. It has had an impact on Judaism, Christianity and Islam each clinging to different interpretations. Even among adherents of a common faith, interpretations of the passage differ to such extremes that it can be used to justify unthinkable behavior ranging from infanticide, mass murder, and suicide bombings. Abraham's actions have generated a sacrificial rhetoric that continues to exert a powerful influence on modern society. The rhetoric of sacrifice was born when the first person used the story of akedah to inspire another to sacrifice willingly on their behalf. Since then, a multitude of religious leaders and religious imposters have used the rhetoric of sacrifice to do their bidding. The akedah has proven itself as a tool that placed in the wrong hands can be used to commit unthinkable acts."

Reading Scripture with the Rabbis - The Five Books of Moses (Paperback): Jacob Neusner Reading Scripture with the Rabbis - The Five Books of Moses (Paperback)
Jacob Neusner
R1,165 Discovery Miles 11 650 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This anthology illustrates how Judaism's classical rabbis of the first seven centuries of the Common Era read the ancient Israelite scriptures. It presents, in particular, a selection of writings that show what happens to the five books of Moses at the hands of the Rabbinical sages of the formative age of Judaism. Each Midrash-compilation takes up a book of Scripture and systematically expounds the message that the Rabbis derive from that particular book. No statement by the rabbis of the meaning of a biblical book emerges as a mere paraphrase of the plain sense of Scripture itself. The compiler introduces the Rabbinic reading of the Five books of Moses, Genesis through Genesis Rabbah, Exodus through Mekhilta attributed to R. Ishmael, Leviticus through Leviticus Rabbah, Numbers through Sifre to Numbers, and Deuteronomy through Sifre to Deuteronomy. Genesis Rabbah shows how the rabbis found in the book of Genesis lessons of history realized in their own times. That approach to Scripture will not surprise Bible-believing Christians. Mekhilta attributed to R. Ishmael shows how the Ten Commandments are expounded in an inclusive spirit, so that the Commandments cover important aspects of everyday life. Leviticus Rabbah shows how the rabbis found in the laws of animal sacrifice lessons of both history and morality, once more an approach Christians will find congenial. The book of Numbers illustrates how the ancient rabbis read Scripture in such a way as to validate and justify rules that on the surface do not seem valid and just at all. In the case I have chosen, the treatment of the wife accused of infidelity, Numbers Chpater Five, the law of the Mishnah and the Tosefta affords to the accused wife rights that Scripture does not on the surface provide for her. We consider both the legal and the exegetical treatment of the topic, with its emphasis, for both norms of conduct and norms of conviction, upon God's justice. The book of Deuteronomy at Chapter Thirty-Two contains Moses's profound reflection on the me

Stories Jesus Still Tells (Paperback, Revised): John Claypool Stories Jesus Still Tells (Paperback, Revised)
John Claypool
R291 Discovery Miles 2 910 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In this revised second edition of Stories Jesus Still Tells, John Claypool brings fresh insight to a selection of parables, allowing us to hear Jesus' calm, persuasive voice still speaking to us through stories like the great banquet, the rich fool, and the final judgment. By providing us with a clearer understanding of the context of these stories in Jesus' immediate culture, Claypool demonstrates how accessible the parables were to his listeners, told in familiar terms that everyone who heard them could grasp. He writes: "This is how Jesus worked the miracle of reconciliation again and again. People would come to him in all degrees of panic, fear, and anger. Yet, instead of confronting them head-on and driving them deeper into their defensiveness, he would, like Nathan, defuse their anxiety by saying, 'Let me tell you a story. . . .' Then, drawn in by the narrative and with their defenses down, the listeners would see the story as a mirror, and its light would make their personal darkness visible. In this way, parables became events of revelation." And so it is with us, Claypool believes. When we open the deep places in our being to the parables-these stories Jesus still tells-then in a moment of surprise and insight, we who listen recognize ourselves in the characters and the decisions they face. The stories are no longer about them, but about us, and the opportunity for illumination and transformation in our own lives.

Compassion as a Subversive Activity - Illness, Community, and the Gospel of Mark (Paperback): David Urion Compassion as a Subversive Activity - Illness, Community, and the Gospel of Mark (Paperback)
David Urion
R294 Discovery Miles 2 940 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

To Dr. David Urion's question, "How can I help you?" the father of the young boy with autism responded in a small voice that choked back some tears, "Be with us. Keep us company. This is so lonely." This book is part of Dr. Urion's attempt to keep his promise, a promise which in fact we all made to this family and to many families on the day of their child's baptism. Baptism by baptism, in each of our faith communities, we vow to do everything in our power to support them in their life in God. Urion beckons us to contemplate the miraculous healings in the Gospel of Mark as subversive political acts of power that provide examples of restoring the integrity and the wholeness of the community, not just for the persons who are overtly healed but for the community as well. The tales of power he invites us to consider in this book reflect upon the extraordinary and paradoxical power of the powerless.

Texts Reading Texts, Sacred and Secular - Two Postmodern Perspectives (Hardcover): Alison Jack Texts Reading Texts, Sacred and Secular - Two Postmodern Perspectives (Hardcover)
Alison Jack
R4,681 Discovery Miles 46 810 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The language, themes and imagery of the Bible have been rewritten into texts across time. In the Revelation of John, the Hebrew Bible echoes and is reinvented, just as in James Hogg's The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner (1824) many explicit and implicit readings and interpretations of the Bible are offered. In Texts Reading Texts, these readings of the Bible, and the ways in which Revelation and Hogg's Confessions have themselves been read, are considered from the two postmodern perspectives of marginalization and deconstruction. By reading the two seemingly unrelated texts side by side from these perspectives, traditional readings of them both are disturbed and challenged.

David J. Schlafer, acclaimed preacher, teacher, and writer, weaves words and ideas like a Celtic braid. He places us in the company of some of the people who appear in the Gospel of John-Nicodemus, the woman at the well, the woman taken in adultery, Martha and Mary, the man born blind, the bride and groom at Cana-and examines them in two unusual sources of light: *The classic line from C. S. Lewis: "Every idea we form of God, God must, in mercy, shatter." *John Newton's hymn "Amazing Grace". Schlafer offers refreshment: He helps us refresh our ideas of God. He refreshes the meaning of the well-worn phrase "Amazing Grace," giving it new life and urgency. He refreshes our grasp of John's Gospel by centering on Jesus' interpersonal encounters rather than on the famous discourses, which are too often considered only in the abstract and at the expense of the dramas John narrates. The Shattering Sound of Amazing Grace is an inspired meeting with Jesus and the people of John's Gospel.

The Transformation of Torah from Scribal Advice to Law (Hardcover, Reissue): Anne Fitzpatrick-McKinley The Transformation of Torah from Scribal Advice to Law (Hardcover, Reissue)
Anne Fitzpatrick-McKinley
R5,338 Discovery Miles 53 380 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Recent discussion of biblical law sees it either as a response to socio-economic factors or as an intellectual tradition. In either case it is viewed as the product of elites that form an international community drawing on a common culture. This book takes that fundamental discussion a step further by proposing that 'law' is an inappropriate term for the biblical codes, and that they represent, rather, the 'moral advice' of scribes working independently of the legal framework and appealing to Yahweh as authority. Only by prolonged exegesis and through the transformation of Judaean religion does this 'advice' take the form of divine law binding on Jews.>

The Psalm of Solomon provides the most detailed expectation of the Jewish Messiah before the New Testament. Wright's critical edition is the first complete critical edition of the Greek texts of the Psalms of Solomon.

Straight to the point, practical, affirming, convicting that s the book of James. In it, we see a picture of early Christians wrestling to apply the teachings of Jesus to their everyday lives. And we see a community plagued by divisiveness and hypocrisy, with an emphasis on wealth and status. James pulls no punches addressing these issues, calling for a faith that shows itself in moral actions: in speech, in interpersonal relationships, in economic and social justice. He also lays out a theology of the redemptive value of suffering. In our day when the behavior and attitudes of professed Christians are often not much different from the surrounding culture, in our society of great wealth, and in our culture that abhors suffering, the challenging message of James is greatly needed. Exploring the links between the Bible and our own times, David Nystrom shares perspectives on the book of James that reveal its enduring relevance for our twenty-first-century lives. This series promises to become an indispensable tool for every pastor and teacher who seeks to make the Bible's timeless message speak to this generation.
