An epic aviation film, based on Tom Wolfe's book, which charts the history of flight from Chuck Yeager's (Sam Shepard) legendary sound barrier-breaking flight in the 1940s, to the first men in space in the 1960s. The story centres on the relentless efforts of several US pilots to break all records set before them, finalising in the US space exploration programme of the 1960s, in which seven pilots were chosen to represent America in the heated space race with the Russians.
A documentary following the acclaimed pianist on his 1957 trip to the Soviet Union. Featuring music by Bach, Berg, Webern and Shostakovich amongst others, the film includes previously unheard performances of Gould's concerts in Moscow and Leningrad, when, at the age of 24, he became the first North American to perform behind the Iron Curtain.
Sequel to the highly successful 2001 movie. Angelina Jolie again plays Lara Croft, trying to recover Pandora's Box, before Jonathan Reiss (Ciaran Hinds), a maniacal scientist, can use it as part of a mass annihilation plot. They are attending a party at Holly's high-rise office block when terrorists, led by the suave Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman) break in, taking everyone hostage. McClane manages to evade capture, however, and sets out to rescue his wife and the other prisoners. It is not long before he is running barefoot over shattered glass (ouch!) in a sweaty vest, muttering 'Yippy kay aye' as he dispatches the baddies with bullets and a certain earthy wit.
Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks star in this crime-caper by Steven Spielberg, based on the true story of Frank W. Abagnale Junior. Finding solace in his new gift - his mother leaves his father (Christopher Walken) after she discovers he is heavily in debt to the IRS - Abagnale goes on to impersonate airline pilots, doctors and even a lawyer, whilst also managing to con banks out of over $2 million. However, his escapades soon attract the interest of FBI agent Carl Hanratty (Hanks) who seems to be always one step behind. That is until Abagnale decides to settle down and discovers that his future father-in-law (Martin Sheen) is the D.A of New Orleans. The real Abagnale appears in a cameo and, after serving time in prison, now works as a consultant for preventing forgery and fraud.
Billy Wilder directs this Oscar-winning classic exposé of the Hollywood studio system. Struggling Hollywood writer Joe Gillis (William Holden) is attempting to avoid his creditors when he pulls his car into the garage of an apparently deserted mansion. He soon discovers that it is in fact the home of Norma Desmond (Gloria Swanson), an ageing actress who was once a star of silent films. Desperate for money, Gillis agrees to work on a screenplay adaptation of 'Salome' which Norma has written for her intended comeback. Gillis then gradually becomes trapped in Norma's bizarre fantasy world, and when he tries to leave her, she makes an attempt at suicide. The film also features silent screen legends Cecil B. DeMille, Buster Keaton and Erich von Stroheim in supporting roles.
Five strangers find themselves trapped in a maze-like prison. Led by cop Quentin (Maurice Dean Wint) and expert jailbreaker Rennes (Wayne Robson) they move from room to room, discovering several traps along the way. Classic British war film based on the novel by Pierre Boulle in which a group of POWs are forced to build a bridge in Burma for the Japanese. Colonel Nicholson (Alec Guinness) is the appointed leader of the men interned in the camp. When the Japanese commander, Colonel Saito (Sessue Hayakawa), orders his captives to build a bridge across the river Kwai, Nicholson agrees on the basis that the project will keep his men occupied and give them an opportunity to prove, through the quality of their work, the superiority of British engineering. However, as the bridge progresses and the POWs strive to show their craftsmanship, Nicholson appears to lose sight of the fact that the ultimate object of the bridge is to help the Japanese win the war. The impending arrival of a British commando team, sent to destroy the bridge, looks set to provide a stern test of where the true loyalties of the increasingly obsessive Nicholson lie.
