Hugh Hudson directs this nostalgic tribute to Cambridge University athletes Harold Abrahams and Eric Liddell, recounting the events of the 1924 Olympics. Abrahams (Ben Cross) is a Jew who experiences racial prejudice at Cambridge, while Liddell (Ian Charleson) is a Scot who runs for the glory of God. The two become rivals on the track, and both are chosen to represent Britain at the Paris Olympics. However, a problem arises when Lidell learns that he is expected to compete on the Sabbath; something that goes directly against his religious beliefs. The film won Oscars for Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Original Score and Best Costume Design, and received a further three nominations.

Lars von Trier directs this sci-fi drama about the effects of depression on two sisters, Justine (Kirsten Dunst) and Claire (Charlotte Gainsbourg). Played out in two acts, the film opens with the wedding of Justine (Dunst) and Michael (Alexander Skarsgård): a sumptuous affair paid for by Justine's Claire (Charlotte Gainsbourg) and her husband John (Kiefer Sutherland). However, when Justine notices a strange star in the sky, she starts behaving oddly and the wedding is ruined. The film's second act follows Justine, now extremely weak and ill, after she goes to live with her sister. As Claire and John struggle to deal with Justine's condition, astronomy buff Claire becomes increasingly concerned about a large blue planet that is threatening to collide with the earth. Charlotte Rampling and John Hurt co-star.

Band of Brothers
Based on the bestseller by Stephen E. Ambrose, the epic 10-part miniseries Band of Brothers tells the story of Easy Company, 506th Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division, U.S. Army. Drawn from interviews with survivors of Easy Company, as well as soldiers' journals and letters, Band of Brothers chronicles the experiences of these men who knew extraordinary bravery and extraordinary fear. They were an elite rifle company parachuting into France early on D-Day morning, fighting in the Battle of the Bulge and capturing Hitler's Eagle's Nest at Berchtesgaden. They were also a unit that suffered 150 percent casualties, and whose lives became legend.

The Pacific
From the team behind the Emmy- and Golden Globe-winning HBO miniseries Band of Brothers comes The Pacific: an epic ten-part miniseries that tracks the intertwined odysseys of three U.S. Marines - Robert Leckie, Eugene Sledge and John Basilone - across the vast canvas of the Pacific Theater during World War II. These men, along with other Marines, are tracked from their first battle on Guadalcanal in 1942, through the rain forests of Cape Gloucester and strongholds of Peleliu, across the bloody sands of Iwo Jima and Okinawa and, finally, to their triumphant but uneasy return home after V-J Day in 1945.

High flying animated comedy adventure from Pixar Studios. 70-something retired balloon salesman Carl Fredricksen (voiced by Edward Asner) decides to use his twilight years to fulfil his lifelong dream of travelling through the wilds of South America. Tying thousands of balloons to his house, he lifts off for his big adventure - only to discover that he has inadvertently brought a stowaway along with him in the form of Russell (Jordan Nagai), an eight-year-old wilderness explorer who is desperate to earn his 'Helping the Elderly' merit badge. The film won awards for Best Animated Feature Film and Best Music at both the 2010 BAFTAs and the Academy Awards.

Hamburg Ballet director and chief choreographer John Neumeier's interpretation of Hans Christian Anderson's fable. With music by Lera Auerbach, Yuan Yuan Tan takes the lead role in this production staged by the San Francisco Ballet.

Upon hearing that an old friend has died, a writer (Richard Dreyfuss) reminisces about his childhood in the Fifties. As a twelve-year-old boy, Gordie's (Will Wheaton) friends consisted of 'bad' kid Chris (River Phoenix), Teddy (Corey Feldman) and the pudgy Vern (Jerry O'Conell). When the latter hears his older brother bragging that his gang have seen the dead body of a local missing person by the railway track, the four boys set out to find the corpse for themselves. Rob Reiner directs this adaptation of Stephen King's novella 'The Body'.

Classic British war film based on the novel by Pierre Boulle in which a group of POWs are forced to build a bridge in Burma for the Japanese. Colonel Nicholson (Alec Guinness) is the appointed leader of the men interned in the camp. When the Japanese commander, Colonel Saito (Sessue Hayakawa), orders his captives to build a bridge across the river Kwai, Nicholson agrees on the basis that the project will keep his men occupied and give them an opportunity to prove, through the quality of their work, the superiority of British engineering. However, as the bridge progresses and the POWs strive to show their craftsmanship, Nicholson appears to lose sight of the fact that the ultimate object of the bridge is to help the Japanese win the war. The impending arrival of a British commando team, sent to destroy the bridge, looks set to provide a stern test of where the true loyalties of the increasingly obsessive Nicholson lie.

Director's cut of Tinto Brass's controversial and notorious erotic classic. Set in Berlin in 1939, as the Nazi dictatorship marches inexorably towards war, SS officer Helmut Wallenburg (Helmut Berger) is commanded to establish a brothel catering to the Nazi elite. Wallenburg diligently selects and trains 20 young Aryan women committed to the ideals of National Socialism and prepared to degrade themselves for their masters, setting the scene for an exercise in debauchery and corruption that parallels de Sade's 'One Hundred and Twenty Days of Sodom', and reflects the growing violence and depravity of the Nazi regime.

Andrew Davies's adaptation of the classic Charles Dickens tale of hardship and struggle in 1820s London. The Dorrit family has spent years in a debtors' prison due to the financial mess in which father William (Tom Courtenay) managed to land himself as a youth. Youngest daughter Amy (Claire Foy), known as Little Dorrit, finds work with the wealthy Mrs Clenham (Judy Parfitt) but knows that her father will, in all probability, spend the remainder of his life in gaol. However, when Arthur Clenham (Matthew Macfadyen), recently returned from abroad, comes to suspect that his late father was in part responsible for the Dorrits' plight, he becomes determined to make amends. But as he continues to delve into the mysteries of the Dorrits' and his parents' shared past, he is unaware that his own mother's house has been placed in peril by the arrival of a sinister stranger.

Yasujiro Ozu directs this intimate family portrait telling the story of widowed college professor Somiya (Chishu Ryu), who must face the inevitability that his only daughter, 27-year-old Noriko (Setsuko Hara), will soon be married off. Noriko, however, sees no reason to disrupt the harmony of the family home and repeatedly insists that marriage is not for her. Yet the social pressure continues to build, and eventually Somiya tricks his daughter into marrying by informing her that he is planning to remarry himself.

All seven episodes of the HBO mini-series following the opening weeks of the Iraq war from the perspective of a batallion of young American marines. Far from home and positioned at the forefront of the assault on Baghdad, the men rely on humour, grit and camaraderie as they face unwieldy military bureaucracy, over-zealous and incompetent commanding officers, constantly changing rules of engagement, a non-existent strategy, severe deficiencies in necessary armour and supplies and an enemy they cannot begin to understand.

78 years later, 'Enterprise D' captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) is mourning the deaths of his brother and nephew when he is called to investigate an attack on the Amagosa Observatory. The culprits turn out to be Picard's old adversaries, renegade Klingons Lursa and B'Etor, allied with sinister El Aurian scientist Dr Soran (Malcolm McDowell). Soran was amongst those rescued by the 'Enterprise B', and is now desperate to return to the energy field - called the Nexus - which claimed Kirk's life. When Picard himself enters the Nexus, a historic encounter results. In 'First Contact' (1996), Captain Jean-Luc Picard, once assimilated by the alien Borg, now senses that they are about to return. He is proved correct when the Collective engages the Enterprise E in battle, only to escape through a temporal vortex into the Earth's past. Picard and his crew glimpse an alternative Earth which is dominated by the Borg and, in an attempt to find out how the Borg have altered the timeline, follow them back to the year 2063, one day before Zefram Cochran (James Cromwell) made the first warp drive journey. It was this event that attracted the attention of some passing Vulcans and established Earth's 'first contact' with alien life. While Riker (Jonathan Frakes) leads an away team to prevent the Borg from tampering with the Earth's history, Picard must repel a Borg invasion of the Enterprise.
