Ralph Bakshi's animated version of the seminal fantasy trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkein, made by overlaying animation on live action actors (a unique pre-computer graphics technique). Set in the fictional world of Middle Earth, The Lord of the Rings tells the epic story of Frodo, a Hobbit who must defeat the evil figure Sauron who holds the Ring of Power, which controls the fate of all Middle Earth. On the way he and his band of friends and cousins must do battle with Black Riders, a Balrog and various other animated perils.

Alejandro Jodorowsky writes and directs this late 1980s horror following circus performer Felix (Adan Jodorowsky/Axel Jodorowsky) whose traumatic childhood has left him mentally disturbed. As a boy, Felix witnessed his father cutting off the arms of his mother, Concha (Blanca Guerra), and he has since spent years in an asylum. Upon his return to the now deranged Concha, Felix has to do her bidding. This involves murdering every woman with whom he comes into contact. When Concha orders Felix to kill Alma (Sabrina Dennison), his childhood sweetheart, he attempts to resist.
Andris Nelsons leads the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra in this 50th anniversary performance of Benjamin Britten's War Requiem. The piece was commissioned to mark the consecration of the new Coventry Cathedral, which was built after the original fourteenth-century structure was destroyed in a World War II bombing raid in 1940. 50 years after its premiere it returns to the cathedral to be performed, as it was on its first airing, by the the City of Birmingham Orchegstra, Chorus, and Youth Chorus. The featured vocalists are Erin Wall, Mark Padmore and Hanno Müller-Brachmann.
In this Powell/Pressburger production set in World War Two Britain, stuffy ex-soldier Clive Candy (Roger Livesey) recalls his career which began as a dashing officer in the Boer War. As a young man he lost the woman he loved (Deborah Kerr, who plays three roles) to a Prussian officer (Anton Walbrook), whom he fought in a duel only to become lifelong friends with. Candy cannot help but feel that his notions of honour and chivalry are out of place in modern warfare. The film's title comes from 'Evening Standard' cartoonist David Low's satirical comic creation, Colonel Blimp.
Five strangers find themselves trapped in a maze-like prison. Led by cop Quentin (Maurice Dean Wint) and expert jailbreaker Rennes (Wayne Robson) they move from room to room, discovering several traps along the way. Maths student Leaven (Nicole De Boer) ascertains that the numbers on each room reveal which is safe, but this does not prevent the death of Rennes. The group are then joined by the autistic Kazan (Andrew Miller), who also has a gift for numbers. It soon becomes clear that each of them possesses the peculiar skills necessary to escape their prison, if they don't wind up dead first.
All six episodes from the second series of the Dublin-set sitcom depicting the life and times of Mrs Agnes Brown (played by writer/creator Brendan O'Carroll) and her unruly brood. In this series Cathy (Jennifer Gibney)'s new boyfriend Professor Clowne (Mike Pyatt) is fascinated by Agnes's odd behaviour when she swallows what she thinks are heartburn pills. The episodes comprise: 'Mammy Pulls It Off', 'Mammy's Coming!', 'iMammy (Batteries Not Included)', 'SuperMammy', 'Mammy's Going' and 'New Mammy'.
Kent Nagano leads the Bayerisches Staatsorchester in Dmitri Tcherniakov's production of Mussorgsky's opera, recorded live at the Nationaltheater, Munich in 2007. Doris Soffel stars as Marfa, with Anatoly Kotscherga as the religious leader Dosifei, Klaus Florian Vogt as Andrey, and Paata Burchuladze as the charismatic Prince Ivan Khovansky.
Conductor Franz Welser-Most leads the Cleveland Orchestra in a performance of Bruckner's Symphony No. 8 in E Major at the Severance Hall, Cleveland in 2010.
A critical film in the history of British Cinema, Sally Potter's adaptation of Virginia Woolf's witty modernist novel took eight years to make it to the screen and is a meticulously crafted commentary on all things English as well as being a wonderfully romantic tale. Tilda Swinton stars as the eponymous hero who lives for 500 years and changes sex halfway. Granted a favour of immortality from Quentin Crisp's archetypal Queen Elizabeth I, Orlando proceeds to spend the next few centuries in search of love, life and adventure.
In the 41st Century, renegade scientist Duran Duran (Milo O'Shea) threatens the peace when he develops a deadly positronic ray. Scantily-clad astronaut Barbarella (Jane Fonda) is dispatched to deal with the problem, and along the way she meets a blind angel, partakes of the essence of man, has her clothes eaten away by razor-toothed robot dolls, and falls into a hair-raising encounter with the hapless revolutionary Dildano (David Hemmings). Roger Vadim directs his then wife Fonda in this beautiful slice of space-age kitsch.
Hugh Hudson directs this nostalgic tribute to Cambridge University athletes Harold Abrahams and Eric Liddell, recounting the events of the 1924 Olympics. Abrahams (Ben Cross) is a Jew who experiences racial prejudice at Cambridge, while Liddell (Ian Charleson) is a Scot who runs for the glory of God. The two become rivals on the track, and both are chosen to represent Britain at the Paris Olympics. However, a problem arises when Lidell learns that he is expected to compete on the Sabbath; something that goes directly against his religious beliefs. The film won Oscars for Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Original Score and Best Costume Design, and received a further three nominations.
A documentary record of the free Rolling Stones concert which took place in Hyde Park on 5th July 1969, two days after the death of guitarist Brian Jones. Includes interview footage and a number of classic performances.
Nuri Bilge Ceylan directs this Turkish drama following a group of men who set out to locate a dead body in the remote Anatolian steppes. The team comprises ten men, including Doctor Cemal (Muhammet Uzuner), Commissioner Naci (Yilmaz Erdogan), Prosecutor Nusret (Taner Birsel) and their entourage as well as the two men suspected of carrying out the murder. The men set out in the evening to search for the corpse's burial place but are unable to locate it. As they travel unsuccessfully from one location to another, and rest for the night at the home of a village elder, the various back-stories of their troubled lives are subtly revealed. The film won the the Grand Prix at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival.
Diego Matheuz conducts the Teatro la Fenice Orchestra and Choir for this New Year's performance, recorded in 2012. The programme features a performance of Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5, along with operatic arias performed by Jessica Pratt, Walter Fraccaro and Alex Esposito.
Sci-fi adventure based on the novel 'A Princess of Mars' by Edgar Rice Burroughs which follows American Civil War veteran John Carter (Taylor Kitsch) who finds himself on Mars. John wakes up on the barren planet, known to its occupants as Barsoom, and soon learns it is on the brink of war. He makes friends with Green Martian Tars Tarkas (Willem Dafoe) and falls for humanoid princess Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins), a Red Martian he saves from a hostile Tharks tribe. With his strength and fighting skills enhanced because of the lower level of gravity, he leads the Martians in a war against their long-time enemy, the Zodanga state, and attempts to save them from extinction when their air supply shuts down. Dominic West, Mark Strong, Bryan Cranston and Ciarán Hinds co-star.
Latvian conductor Andris Nelsons leads the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in a performance of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5, featuring renowned pianist Yefim Bronfman. Recorded live at the Lucerne Festival in 2011, the programme also features Rimsky-Korsakov's 'Scheherazade', Chopin's Etude in F Major and Dvorák's Slavonic Dance in A Flat Major.

Mel Brooks spoofs every sci-fi movie from 'Star Wars' and 'Alien' to 'Planet of the Apes' in this interstellar comedy. When Princess Vespa (Daphne Zuniga) is kidnapped by the evil Dark Helmet (Rick Moranis), space adventurer Lone Star (Bill Pullman) and his doglike companion Barf (John Candy) are hired to rescue her by her father, King Roland. En route the duo encounter the monstrous Pizza the Hutt (voiced by Dom De Luise), cosmic advisor Yogurt (Brooks) and the princess' android handmaiden Dot Matrix (voiced by Joan Rivers), and discover all kinds of opportunities for spin-off merchandising.
Native American filmmaker Georgina Lightning co-writes, directs and stars in this drama about the abuse suffered by Cree Indian children at a government-run boarding school. Rain (Lightning) is a young Cree woman tormented by terrifying visions from the past. Luke (Bradley Cooper) is a geologist attempting to locate the epicentre of a recent earthquake. Both of their journeys lead them to an abandoned schoolhouse on an Indian reservation, where they uncover a string of shocking secrets that generations of corrupt politicians and businessmen have kept hidden.
Lars von Trier directs this sci-fi drama about the effects of depression on two sisters, Justine (Kirsten Dunst) and Claire (Charlotte Gainsbourg). Played out in two acts, the film opens with the wedding of Justine (Dunst) and Michael (Alexander Skarsgård): a sumptuous affair paid for by Justine's Claire (Charlotte Gainsbourg) and her husband John (Kiefer Sutherland). However, when Justine notices a strange star in the sky, she starts behaving oddly and the wedding is ruined. The film's second act follows Justine, now extremely weak and ill, after she goes to live with her sister. As Claire and John struggle to deal with Justine's condition, astronomy buff Claire becomes increasingly concerned about a large blue planet that is threatening to collide with the earth. Charlotte Rampling and John Hurt co-star.
Francis Ford Coppola began to film 'Apocalypse Now' in February 1976. After 238 days in the jungle, filming was complete and millions of dollars had been spent (Marlon Brando was on set for three weeks at a million dollars a week). Actors had been replaced (Harvey Keitel by Martin Sheen). They had all gone a bit insane (according to Coppola) and the whole thing was documented on film by his wife, Eleanor.

In the future, a clerk at the all-powerful Ministry of Information sticks to his ideals and ends up crushed by the system in this half comedy, half horror story from former 'Monty Python' animator Terry Gilliam. Like Orwell's novel '1984', which it echoes, the future is seen from a 1940's perspective. Jonathan Pryce stars, with Robert De Niro making a cameo appearance as an excessively diligent sewage inspector.
Super-spy Ethan Hunt has retired from active duty to train new IMF agents. But he is called back into action to confront the toughest villain he's ever faced - Owen Davian, an international weapons and information provider with no remorse and no conscience. Hunt assembles his team - his old friend Luther Strickell, transportation expert Declan, and background operative Zhen, to rescue one of his very own trainees, Lindsey, who was kidnapped while on a surveillance detail of Davian. It soon becomes evident that Davian is well-protected, well-connected, and downright malicious, forcing Hunt to extend his journey back into the field in order to rescue his wife, Julia, and uncover IMF double agents in the process. |
