William Friedkin; Starring Roy Scheider
R925 Discovery Miles 9 250 Ships in 15 - 30 working days

A hallucinatory journey into the heart of darkness, William Friedkin's pulse-pounding reimagining of the suspense classic The Wages of Fear was dismissed upon its release in 1977, only to be recognized decades later as one of the boldest auteur statements of the New Hollywood.

In a remote Latin American village, four desperate fugitives-a New Jersey gangster (Roy Scheider), a Mexican assassin (Francisco Rabal), an unscrupulous Parisian businessman (Bruno Cremer), and an Arab terrorist (Amidou)-take on a seemingly doomed mission: transporting two trucks full of highly explosive nitroglycerin through the treacherous jungle.

Aided by Tangerine Dream's otherworldly synth score, Friedkin turns each bump in the road into a tour de force of cold-sweat tension-conjuring a hauntingly nihilistic vision of a world ruled by chance and fate.

Sophia Loren
R780 Discovery Miles 7 800 Ships in 15 - 30 working days

This truly is the definitive Sophia Loren boxset, defining her life-time achievement featuring her four most awarded films - including her Best Actress Oscar which made her the first artist to win an Oscar for a foreign-language performance for TWO WOMEN.

This Blu-ray set includes her most notable 1960s performances, where she's also joined by the Award-winning Marcello Mastroianni. Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow (1963), won the Oscar for Best Foreign Film. Marriage, Italian Style (1964) earned Loren another Oscar nomination

The later A SPECIAL DAY (also Oscar nominated) is a moving, must see film by Ettore Scola which Loren describes as her favourite film. Both Loren and co-star Mastroianni, who both played against their (impossibly) glamorous image, agreed this was the highlight of their acting careers!

With a career that has already spanned six decades and been honored with 50 awards, Sophia Loren remains one of the most beloved and recognisable figures in the international film world. The Academy awarded Loren another Oscar in 1991 for her body of work and was declared by the Oscar Academy itself "one of world cinema's greatest treasures.

Two Women (1960)
Loren plays widowed shopkeeper Cesira during WWII. After the Allied bombing of Rome she leaves behind her grocery store and goes back to her hometown in the mountains with her young teenage daughter Rosetta (Eleonora Brown) where she believes they will both be safe. Once there Cesira forms a bond with an intellectual named Michele (Jean-Paul Belmondo), who becomes a father figure to Rosetta. However, once Michele is captured by German soldiers Cesira attempts to return to Rome as she does all she can to safeguard the innocence of her daughter from the horrors of war.

Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow (1963)
Loren plays Adelina of Naples, Anna of Milan and Mara of Rome. To support her unemployed husband Adelina sells black market cigarettes. However, unable to pay a fine and faced with a prison sentence she fears the worst until a neighbour reminds her that Italian law states a pregnant woman cannot be imprisoned. Adelina then becomes pregnant and intends to remain pregnant but after bearing seven children in eight years she is finally made to face the consequences of her earlier actions. Anna is the self-indulgent wife of a wealthy businessman. She and her lover Renzo (Marcello Mastroianni) take her husband's Rolls Royce for a drive but when they become involved in an accident both must reconsider their suitability for one another. Mara is a prostitute who attracts the attention of Umberto (Giovanni Ridolfi), a naïve young man studying for the priesthood, who is unaware of her profession. When his grandmother finds out about his infatuation she warns against him getting involved.

Marriage Italian Style (1964)
Filumena (Loren) lives a comfortable life as the mistress of successful businessman Domenico (Mastroianni), whom she first met aged 17 when she was working in a brothel. However, when Domenico becomes engaged to another woman Filumena feigns illness. Filumena then, pretending to be on her deathbed, asks Domenico to marry her and he agrees only because he believes she has days left to live. Once Filumena reveals her deception she also opens up about having three sons and uses them as a ruse to keep Domenico interested in her.

A Special Day (1977)
Set in 1938 on the day when Hitler visited Rome to meet with Mussolini. Housewife Antonietta (Loren) stays at home while her husband and children go to see the fascist leaders paraded through the streets of Rome. When their pet myna bird escapes into a neighbouring apartment Antonietta goes to retrieve it and strikes up a conversation with Gabriele (Mastroianni). Despite their marked differences of opinion the pair spend the day together and the encounter becomes one neither will forget.

Horror starring Keanu Reeves as John Constantine, a man who was born with a gift he didn't want - the ability to clearly recognise the half-breed angels and demons that walk the earth in human skin. Constantine was driven to take his own life to escape the tormenting clarity of his vision, but he failed. Resuscitated against his will, he found himself cast back into the land of the living. Now, marked as an attempted suicide with a temporary lease on life, he patrols the earthly border between heaven and hell, hoping in vain to earn his way to salvation by sending the devil's foot soldiers back to the depths. But Constantine is no saint. Disillusioned by the world around him and at odds with the one beyond, he's a hard-drinking, hard-living bitter hero who scorns the very idea of heroism. When a desperate but skeptical police detective (Rachel Weisz) enlists his help in solving the mysterious death of her beloved twin sister (also played by Weisz), their investigation takes them through the world of demons and angels that exists just beneath the landscape of contemporary Los Angeles. Caught in a catastrophic series of otherworldly events, the two become inextricably involved and seek to find their own peace at whatever cost.

Blackly comic psychodrama from director Robert Altman starring screen legends Bette Davis and Joan Crawford. Jane Hudson (Davis) found fame as child star 'Baby Jane', only to be eclipsed by her sister Blanche (Crawford) when the latter became a Hollywood glamour girl in the 1930s. Blanche's career was brought to an abrupt end by an accident for which Jane was seemingly responsible. Now the two ageing sisters live together in their Hollywood mansion, attended by their maid, Elvira (Maidie Norman). When Jane discovers that Blanche is planning to sell their home and have her put away, she begins a campaign of terror against her wheelchair-bound sibling. Old rivals Davis and Crawford allegedly continued their on-screen conflict after the cameras stopped rolling - Davis kicked Crawford in the head during the recording of one scene, and Crawford retaliated by placing lead weights beneath her skirts for a sequence where Davis was required to drag her across the floor.
