Collection of all seven films from the highly successful comedy series. In 'Police Academy' (1984), a new mayor offers a motley crew of misfits the chance to oil the wheels of justice when he lifts the restrictions that normally apply for recruiting new members to the police force. The academy has the onerous task of knocking them into law-enforcing shape. 'Police Academy 2 - Their First Assignment' (1985) sees six of the inept recruits being transferred to another precinct, where the lieutenant's promotion depends on them flunking their training course. They also face trouble on the streets in the form of a gang of sociopaths, led by a psychobabbling lunatic. In 'Police Academy 3 - Back in Training' (1986), the police budget is being cut, so one of the two training academies faces the chop. It's up to the former graduates of Commandant Lassard (George Gaynes)'s academy to save their old training ground. In 'Police Academy 4 - Citizens On Patrol' (1987), our rookie cops try to involve the local community in order to prevent crime. However, their efforts are thwarted by Captain Harris (G. W. Bailey) who is determined to scupper the plans of the group which has caused him so much trouble in the past. 'Police Academy 5 - Assignment Miami Beach' (1988) sees Commandant Lassard finally reach retirement age. The whole gang fly down to Miami to watch him receive an award. The only problem is that he's picked up the wrong bag at the airport and is now in possession of some stolen diamonds belonging to a bunch of crooks. In 'Police Academy 6 - City Under Siege' (1989), a criminal holds the city to ransom by masterminding a spate of burglaries and fraud. To make matters worse, the rookie cops have a plan to stop him. 'Police Academy 7 - Mission to Moscow' (1994) sees the fabled police team helping out in post-Soviet Union Russia. The Russians have a problem on their hands when Mafia godfather Konali (Ron Perlman) hatches a plan to control the entire world via an addictive computer game. The fate of the planet lies in the police academy's hands, much to the planet's concern...
Neil Thompson directs this British thriller set in early 1980s Birmingham. Mel Raido stars as Danny, a lonely and introverted factory worker whose already bleak existence is reduced still further when he becomes the victim of a random act of violence. However, Danny's life is turned around when he meets the doormen of a local nightclub, who take him in and build up his confidence. But as Danny is drawn deeper into their world, he crosses paths with the local gangland boss and inadvertently triggers a chain of events with shockingly brutal consequences.
Sidney Lumet's 1973 crime drama Serpico remains one of the most influential cop movies - alongside Al Pacino's nuanced performance in a disturbing portrait of corruption and morality in the city that never sleeps. A plainclothes street patrolman, Frank Serpico (Pacino) might be the best cop in New York, but he is unwilling to play dirty and give into police corruption of drugs, violence, and kickbacks his colleagues indulge in every day. When he decides to expose those around him, Frank finds himself a target, not just to the city's criminals, but his own peers. Shot on location and based on real events, Serpico captures the grit of New York in a way no film has rivalled, not just for its toned down realism, but also the bleakness Lumet portrays within his hometown city with brutal cynicism with frank immediacy.
Billy Wilder's classic drama starring Ray Milland as a writer and inveterate alcoholic who evades his brother to embark on a binge around New York. Don Birnam (Milland)'s struggles with alcohol have become clear to those close to him. However, having satisfied himself that Don hasn't had a drink for ten days, his brother, Wick (Philip Terry), agrees to escort Don's girlfriend, Helen (Jane Wynam), to a show while the writer prepares himself for their planned trip to the country. Instead, Don uses the absence of the pair to search his apartment for the booze Wick has hidden and sets off for the city's watering holes when he can't find any. Over the days that follow, Helen and the increasingly exasperated Wick attempt to track down the absent Don, but can anyone help the wayward writer get back on the wagon?
John Wayne stars in this classic romantic drama directed by John Ford. The story follows Irish-American boxer Sean Thornton (Wayne) who refuses to fight again after a traumatic bout. He returns to Ireland to reclaim his family's farm in Inisfree. But when love intervenes he is forced to fight again to win the heart and hand of local girl Mary Kate Danaher (Maureen O'Hara) whose brother Red (Victor McLaglen) wants the farm for himself and objects to the pair's union.
Blackly comic psychodrama from director Robert Altman starring screen legends Bette Davis and Joan Crawford. Jane Hudson (Davis) found fame as child star 'Baby Jane', only to be eclipsed by her sister Blanche (Crawford) when the latter became a Hollywood glamour girl in the 1930s. Blanche's career was brought to an abrupt end by an accident for which Jane was seemingly responsible. Now the two ageing sisters live together in their Hollywood mansion, attended by their maid, Elvira (Maidie Norman). When Jane discovers that Blanche is planning to sell their home and have her put away, she begins a campaign of terror against her wheelchair-bound sibling. Old rivals Davis and Crawford allegedly continued their on-screen conflict after the cameras stopped rolling - Davis kicked Crawford in the head during the recording of one scene, and Crawford retaliated by placing lead weights beneath her skirts for a sequence where Davis was required to drag her across the floor.
Sequel to the 'what would happen if' premise of '28 Days Later' (2002) where Britain has been devastated by the release of a virus which turns the victim into a murderous rage. This time around, it's six months later and the US military have managed to restore order in the population. Unfortunately, one of the returning refugees is carrying the virus, and it won't be long before a pandemic spreads.
Drawing its inspiration from Anthony Mann's 'The Fall of the Roman Empire' (1964) and Stanley Kubrick's 'Spartacus' (1960), Ridley Scott's Oscar-winning take on the Roman epic lavishes the genre with the very latest in computer-generated effects technology. After the death of Emperor Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris), Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) betrays the Emperor's beloved General Maximus (Russell Crowe) and takes the throne for himself. Maximus is sold as a slave and then trained as a gladiator, keeping himself strong with thoughts of revenge. Eventually he is taken to the Colosseum, where he prepares to fight in a contest presided over by the corrupt Commodus. Will he suffer the ultimate humiliation and die for the entertainment of his enemy or will he survive the rigors of the arena and find a way of exacting his revenge? |
