Systems engineer Chuck Noland (Tom Hanks) says goodbye to his girlfriend Kelly (Helen Hunt) and heads off on a flight to South America. En route the plane crashes into the Pacific Ocean, leaving Chuck as its only survivor. Luckily, there is an uninhabited island nearby and Chuck manages to swim to safety. After a failed attempt to escape on an inflatable raft, Chuck accepts that he is unlikely to get back to civilisation and begins to make the most of what he has around him. Four years later he is still on the island, having adapted extremely well to his new environment, but decides the time is right to make another attempt at the long journey home and sets off for a remarkable adventure on a makeshift wooden raft.
In Bernardo Bertolucci's controversial adult drama, a middle-aged American (Marlon Brando), whose wife has just committed suicide, meets a young French girl (Maria Schneider) when they both view an apartment in Paris at the same time. They begin a strange, anonymous sexual relationship in the empty apartment, agreeing not to divulge any personal information to each other. Bertolucci and Brando were both nominated for Academy Awards.
Ridley Scott's fantasy adventure, set in a mythical, timeless forest filled with pixies, goblins and other fairytale creatures. The Lord of Darkness (Tim Curry) has come up with a plan to steal the horns of the forest's two remaining unicorns and to thereby block out the sunlight forever. The one person standing between him and the fulfilment of his diabolical desire is the peasant boy Jack (Tom Cruise), an unlikely hero whose girlfriend, Princess Lili (Mia Sara), the Lord of Darkness now has under his control. Jack embarks on a quest to save his true love and prevent the forest being lost in an eternal night; and to make sure he succeeds, he gathers many of his elf and goblin friends to help out.
Triple bill of action features. In 'I Am Wrath' (2016), after
witnessing his wife Vivian (Rebecca de Mornay)'s brutal murder,
engineer Stanley Hill (John Travolta) embarks upon a violent vendetta
of revenge to find those responsible. With the corrupt police force
unwilling to help him, Stanley enlists the services of his old friend
Dennis (Christopher Meloni) to help him unleash his wrath in his quest
for justice.
Music video director Samuel Bayer helms this remake of Wes Craven's 1980s slasher horror classic. A group of suburban teenagers - Nancy (Rooney Mara), Quentin (Kyle Gallner), Jesse (Thomas Dekker) and Alan (Clancy Brown) - all attended the same nursery school when they were toddlers. Several of them were molested by the nursery's janitor, Fred Krueger (Jackie Earle Haley), who was subsequently burned to death in a fire by their enraged parents. Now the horribly disfigured, razor-fingered Freddie is out to wreak his revenge upon the teenagers by slicing them up in their dreams. As long as they are able to awake, they can protect one another - but as soon as they succumb to sleep, there can be no escape.
Blockbuster producer Jerry Bruckheimer ups the disaster movie ante by envisaging the destruction of the entire earth by an asteroid the size of Texas. NASA's attempt to avert global catastrophe involves sending a motley crew of oil drillers, led by Harry Stamper (Bruce Willis), into space, where they will drop a nuclear bomb into the asteroid's core. Amongst Stamper's team is A.J. (Ben Affleck), the headstrong suitor of his daughter (Liv Tyler), who waits on earth alongside NASA chief Dan Truman (Billy Bob Thornton) for news of the mission's success.
Tom Hanks stars in this gangster drama set in the American Midwest during the 1930s. Twelve-year-old Michael Sullivan Jr is curious about what his father (Hanks) does for a living, and one night decides to hide in his car as he goes off to work. It soon transpires that the elder Sullivan is a hitman for the mob, and when young Michael witnesses a killing carried out by the gangster boss' son Connor (Daniel Craig), it starts off a chain of events which will mark Michael's life forever. Co-starring Paul Newman and Jude Law and directed by Sam Mendes.
George P. Cosmatos directs this Western starring Kurt Russell and Val Kilmer. Hoping for a more prosperous lifestyle, retired lawman Wyatt Earp (Russell) moves to Tombstone, Arizona, where he meets up with his friend Doc Holliday (Kilmer). The duo, along with Earp's brothers, soon incur the wrath of a notorious gang of outlaws known as The Cowboys which ultimately leads to the infamous showdown at the O.K. Corral. When The Cowboys retaliate by attacking two of his brothers, killing one of them, Earp becomes even more determined to seek justice.
Classic, much-parodied allegorical drama from director Ingmar Bergman. A knight returns from the crusades to his plague-ridden homeland and engages Death in a game of chess. This leads the knight to ponder the question of whether or not God exists.
Antony Balch directs this British horror comedy. Struggling pop star Jason Jones (Robin Askwith) attempts to escape the pressures of fame at a country retreat, run by the mysterious Dr. Christian Storm (Michael Gough) and his matronly wife Harris (Ellen Pollock). Once there he discovers the estate is populated by holidaymakers walking around in a daze with scars on their heads, leading Jason to suspect the doctor is conducting experiments in mind control using the unsuspecting hippies as his subjects.
Sidney Lumet's 1973 crime drama Serpico remains one of the most influential cop movies - alongside Al Pacino's nuanced performance in a disturbing portrait of corruption and morality in the city that never sleeps. A plainclothes street patrolman, Frank Serpico (Pacino) might be the best cop in New York, but he is unwilling to play dirty and give into police corruption of drugs, violence, and kickbacks his colleagues indulge in every day. When he decides to expose those around him, Frank finds himself a target, not just to the city's criminals, but his own peers. Shot on location and based on real events, Serpico captures the grit of New York in a way no film has rivalled, not just for its toned down realism, but also the bleakness Lumet portrays within his hometown city with brutal cynicism with frank immediacy.
Jim Carrey and Cameron Diaz star in this '90s US comedy. After being thrown out of the Coco Bongo nightclub one sad evening, timid bank clerk Stanley Ipkiss (Carrey) happens across a powerful Norse mask in the river which transforms him into a wise-cracking, zoot-suited, green-faced superhero. With his new-found charm and powers, which include infinite malleability of his own body, Stanley chats up the gorgeous woman of his dreams, singer Tina Carlyle (Diaz), robs his own bank, outwits the cops and demolishes the local hoods. His extravagant nightly exploits attract the unwanted attention of Lt. Mitch Kellaway (Peter Riegert) and Tina's boyfriend Dorian Tyrell (Peter Greene), who is trying to exert his own control over the city.
This classic confrontation between good and evil stars Kevin Costner as federal agent Eliot Ness, Robert De Niro as gangland kingpin Al Capone and Sean Connery as Malone, the cop who teaches Ness how to beat the mob: shoot fast and shoot first. Brian De Palma's The Untouchables is a must see masterpiece - a glorious, fierce, larger-than-life depiction of the mob warlord who ruled Prohibition-era Chicago and the law enforcers who vowed to bring him down.
Sequel to the 'what would happen if' premise of '28 Days Later' (2002) where Britain has been devastated by the release of a virus which turns the victim into a murderous rage. This time around, it's six months later and the US military have managed to restore order in the population. Unfortunately, one of the returning refugees is carrying the virus, and it won't be long before a pandemic spreads.
Darren Aronofsky directs this elegaic time-travelling odyssey, in which Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz star in a series of storylines about a man's struggle to save the woman he loves. In one storyline, 16th-century Spanish conquistador Tomas Creo (Jackman) sets out to find the fabled Tree of Life in order to save his queen, Isabel (Weisz) from the Inquisition. In a modern-day storyline, Jackman is Tommy, a scientist desperately searching for the medical breakthrough that will save the life of his cancer-stricken wife, Izzie (Weisz). In a future timeline, Tom (Jackman) is a 26th-century astronaut travelling through deep space - and finally beginning to grasp the mysteries of life that have consumed him for so long.
When a New Orleans ferry carrying 500 passengers is destroyed by a bomb, Doug Carling; an FBI agent is drafted in to track down the perpetrator. When a body is found floating in the river, it is determined that the victim was murdered before the ferry blast occurred. Unfortunately, the victim was the impossibly beautiful Claire Kuchever, whose death has begun to torment Carlin. Adding a new level to the investigation is a top-secret FBI invention, which allows a select group to view the past on screen as if it had been videotaped days earlier. The more Carlin sees of Kuchever, the more connected to her he becomes, until he decides to risk his life by travelling back in time and altering the course of history.
Sci-fi action. Early in the 21st century, billionaire Charles Weyland (Lance Hendriksen) is convinced that his satellite thermal imaging system has picked up evidence of an ancient life form buried under the ice in remotest Antarctica. When a team of archaeologists sets out to investigate, they find more than they had bargained for: the ancient pyramid temple they discover contains evidence that the alien life form it contained could still be in existence. They then find out from studying the hieroglyphics in the temple that an even greater threat is hanging over them: a group of Predators - the feared intergalactic hunters - are on their way to earth to take part in a rite-of-passage battle with the aliens that could lay waste to the human race...
British gangster film based on the London-set crime novel by J.J. Connelly. 'X' (Daniel Craig) is a successful, smooth-talking cocaine dealer - respected among London's crime elite - whose plan is to bankroll enough cash to make an early retirement from 'business' and lead a quiet, crime-free life. He sees the opportunity to make a final score when big crime boss Jimmy Price (Kenneth Cranham) asks him to track down Charlotte Ryder (Nathalie Lunghi), the wayward daughter of his old friend Eddie (Michael Gambon). But complicating matters are 2 million pounds' worth of Grade A drugs, a neo-Nazi sect and endless 'layers' of deals and double-deals...
This controversial film stars Edward Norton as Derek Vinyard, an angry young man seeking retribution for the murder of his father. Derek becomes the leader of a skinhead white-power movement, espousing racist views to his peers and using his intelligence to stir up as much race-hate as possible. Derek's actions culminate in murder and he is jailed. Three years later his girlfriend (Fairuza Balk) and brother Danny (Edward Furlong) await his release, but discover that Derek is a changed man, ashamed of his past and no longer driven by hatred. However, the consequences of his actions still haunt Derek's family and the threat of a return to violence is never far away.
Two blaxploitation horror movies. In 'Blacula' (1972), two centuries after having a curse placed on him by Count Dracula in Transylvania, African Prince Mamuwalde (William Marshall) is transported to Los Angeles where he goes on a killer rampage. While he discovers a woman (Vonetta McGee) he believes to be the reincarnation of his late wife, Mamuwalde already has a vampire-hunting doctor (Thalmus Rasulala) on his trail. In 'Scream Blacula Scream' (1973), after his undoing in 'Blacula', Mamuwalde (Marshall) returns from the dead in modern-day Los Angeles. He soon comes up against a voodoo priestess (Pam Grier).
Family comedy following a robot who goes AWOL. A reclusive inventor, Newton Crosby (Steve Guttenberg), is responsible for the development of a range of robots that have the capacity to destroy entire cities. At a military demonstration, one of the robots is struck by lighting and is given a life of its own. The authorities decide that this is dangerous and want the robot terminated. Number Five (voice of Tim Blaney) duly goes into hiding with a fanatical animal lover, Stephanie Speck (Ally Sheedy), who believes he is an alien. Will she be able to protect him?
Kristy McNichol, Paul Winfield and Burl Ives star in this American drama directed by Samuel Fuller. When young actress Julie (McNichol) unwittingly runs over a white Alsation one night, she panics and takes the animal to the vet. While trying to find the stray dog's owners Julie takes him home with her where he proves useful as he fends off an attack from a rapist. Suspecting that something is not quite right with the dog, Julie takes it to a specialist trainer where she learns that the dog has been trained to attack black people. Can Julie and the trainer reprogramme the dog into being the loving family pet he once was?
When a luxury liner is upturned by a tidal wave on New Year's Eve, ten survivors struggle to stay alive as they seek a means of escape. Resourceful man of the cloth Reverend Frank Scott (Gene Hackman) assumes responsibility for his fellow passengers, who include a pop singer, an elderly Jewish couple and a New York detective.
