The Wisdom of Buddhism (Paperback, 2 Rev Ed): Christmas Humphreys The Wisdom of Buddhism (Paperback, 2 Rev Ed)
Christmas Humphreys
R1,812 Discovery Miles 18 120 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The wisdom of Buddhism is to be found in its Scriptures, and this book attempts to compile a selection from Buddhist writings. The Scriptures used by the Zen School of China and Japan are well represented, and chapters discuss such topics as the Buddha, Tibetan Buddhism, concentration and meditation, the Buddhist order, and Nirvana. In this anthology, the source of each item is given, whilst a glossary and index have been added.

Lotus Of The Wonderful Law (Paperback, 2nd edition): W.E. Soothill Lotus Of The Wonderful Law (Paperback, 2nd edition)
W.E. Soothill
R1,671 Discovery Miles 16 710 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The "Lotus of the Wonderful (or Mystic) Law" is the most important religious book of the Far East, and has been described as "The Gospel of Half Asia". It is also the chief scripture of Buddhism in China, and therefore the chief source of consolation of the many millions of Buddhists in East Asia. It is justifiable to consider it as one of the greatest and most formative books of the world, and the text is here translated for the use of the Western student whilst an endeavour is made to reveal the contour of the most spiritual drama known in the Far East.

The Twilight Language (Paperback, New Ed): Roderick Bucknell, Martin Stuart-Fox The Twilight Language (Paperback, New Ed)
Roderick Bucknell, Martin Stuart-Fox
R1,779 Discovery Miles 17 790 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book investigates two matters which initially appear unconnected: the nature of Buddha's enlightenment and the meaning of Buddhist symbolism. It concludes that these are in fact connected because they ultimately deal with meditative practice. The authors examine the relationship that appears to exist between Buddhist meditative techniques and certain examples of Buddhist symbolism as found in the earliest Pali texts and in the so-called twilight language of the tantras. In doing so, they bring together two approaches of Buddhist hermeneutics which in the past have never been properly integrated: the meditative-descriptive approach and the scholarly-historical approach. The result is an original interpretation of the higher stages of the Buddhist path of enlightenment, and of key aspects of Buddhist cosmology and doctrine.

The Heart of the Warrior - Origins and Religious Background of the Samurai System in Feudal Japan (Paperback): Catharina... The Heart of the Warrior - Origins and Religious Background of the Samurai System in Feudal Japan (Paperback)
Catharina Blomberg
R1,796 Discovery Miles 17 960 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book traces the development of the samurai, in the way they regarded themselves and their role in society. From their origins as provincial men-at-arms they gradually evolved into a very powerful group who had an almost mythical status. Their concept of chilvarous behaviour and strict code based on the central principle of loyality to death and beyond, hitherto largely ignored by scholars, has since earned them a worldwide appeal. The warrior ethic is examined in relation to the three traditional religious influences - Buddhism, Shinto and Confucianism. As warriors the "bushi" contravened the most important tenets of the main religions, that of taking life, which was strictly forbidden in both Buddhism and Shinto. Therefore ways had to be found to justify their actions to harmonize with these religions. The book analyses the attitudes of the samurai themselves towards such characteristic features of their life as the sword and sword-fighting techniques, the taking of heads of fallen enemies on the battlefield, honourable suicide ("seppuku") and human sacrifice ("junshi" and hito-bashira") the cult of the god of war, hachiman, and of Buddhist deities of warlike aspect, as well

The Ethics of Buddhism (Paperback, Revised): Shundo Tachibana The Ethics of Buddhism (Paperback, Revised)
Shundo Tachibana
R1,617 Discovery Miles 16 170 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A popular, if erroneous, conception of Buddhism has been that of self-negation or even nihilism, that is to say a religion that is negative in its basic attitude. In this classic work, Professor Tachibana instead argues that Buddhism is an essentially positive creed that provides an ethical philosophy that remains relevant irrespective of time and place. This is the 'Middle Way', with eight qualities or virtues - understanding, thought, speech, action, livelihood, effort, mindfulness and concentration - that form the core of the Buddhist philosophy of life. It is these great moral attributes that Professor Tachibana expounds as being the essence of Buddhism and providing a way of life based on tolerance and benevolence.

Breathing Mindfulness - Discovering the Riches at the Heart of the Buddhist Path (Paperback): Sarah Shaw Breathing Mindfulness - Discovering the Riches at the Heart of the Buddhist Path (Paperback)
Sarah Shaw
R537 Discovery Miles 5 370 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Explore the life-changing practice of ānāpānasati, or breathing mindfulness—one of the most popular and foundational Buddhist meditation practices.

Breathing mindfulness meditation is a cornerstone of Buddhist practice, believed to be key to the Buddha's own enlightenment. This powerful technique fosters a harmonious blend of awareness and tranquility, guiding practitioners towards profound meditative states and deeper wisdom.

Sarah Shaw guides readers through the history and contemporary interpretations of breathing mindfulness in the Pali or Southern tradition of Buddhism. In this in-depth study, she examines:

  • The Ānāpānasati Sutta, the foundational Buddhist text on breathing mindfulness;
  • The systematization of the practice through the commentarial texts like Vimuttimagga (The Path to Freedom) and Visuddhimagga (The Path of Purification);
  • Intriguing, lesser-known systems of esoteric Theravada breath meditation nearly lost to history;
  • The integration of breath meditation into modern spiritual practices;
  • The importance of breath meditation to the insight meditation (vipassana) movement;
  • And the influence of breathing mindfulness across diverse spiritual paths.

Shaw's exploration reveals the enduring legacy of this practice, from its ancient origins to its contemporary resurgence.

The Buddha's Tooth - Western Tales of a Sri Lankan Relic (Paperback): John S. Strong The Buddha's Tooth - Western Tales of a Sri Lankan Relic (Paperback)
John S. Strong
R1,054 Discovery Miles 10 540 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

John S. Strong unravels the storm of influences shaping the received narratives of two iconic sacred objects. Bodily relics such as hairs, teeth, fingernails, pieces of bone-supposedly from the Buddha himself-have long served as objects of veneration for many Buddhists. Unsurprisingly, when Western colonial powers subjugated populations in South Asia, they used, manipulated, redefined, and even destroyed these objects to exert control. In The Buddha's Tooth, John S. Strong examines Western stories, from the sixteenth to the twentieth century, surrounding two significant Sri Lankan sacred objects to illuminate and concretize colonial attitudes toward Asian religions. First, he analyzes a tale about the Portuguese capture and public destruction, in the mid-sixteenth century, of a tooth later identified as a relic of the Buddha. Second, he switches gears to look at the nineteenth-century saga of British dealings with another tooth relic of the Buddha-the famous Dalada enshrined in a temple in Kandy-from 1815, when it was taken over by English forces, to 1954, when it was visited by Queen Elizabeth II. As Strong reveals, the stories of both the Portuguese tooth and the Kandyan tooth reflect nascent and developing Western understandings of Buddhism, realizations of the cosmopolitan nature of the tooth, and tensions between secular and religious interests.

Revival: Outlines of Buddhism: A Historical Sketch (1934) - A Historical Sketch (Hardcover): Rhys Davids Revival: Outlines of Buddhism: A Historical Sketch (1934) - A Historical Sketch (Hardcover)
Rhys Davids
R4,626 Discovery Miles 46 260 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book discusses what is now called "Buddhism". It started as an effort to strengthen a weak point in that "immanence" which had become the accepted religious teaching in the valley of the Ganges, by showing that the "God/in/man" was realizable, not by gnosis and ritual, but in conduct. Conduct needed to be brought into relgion, into the relation between man and his eternal destiny. Man's being is more truly becoming; and only in and by becoming a More, will he attain to an actual, not potential Most. In teaching a More worth in conduction, Buddhism brought in a teaching of the man himself as Less.
