Performance of Cement-Based Materials in Aggressive Aqueous Environments - State-of-the-Art Report, RILEM TC 211 - PAE... Performance of Cement-Based Materials in Aggressive Aqueous Environments - State-of-the-Art Report, RILEM TC 211 - PAE (Hardcover, 2013 ed.)
Mark Alexander, Alexandra Bertron, Nele De Belie
R5,541 R4,949 Discovery Miles 49 490 Save R592 (11%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Concrete and cement-based materials must operate in increasingly aggressive aqueous environments, which may be either natural or industrial. These materials may suffer degradation in which ion addition and/or ion exchange reactions occur, leading to a breakdown of the matrix microstructure and consequent weakening. Sometimes this degradation can be extremely rapid and serious such as in acidic environments, while in other cases degradation occurs over long periods. Consequences of material failure are usually severe - adversely affecting the health and well-being of human communities and disturbing ecological balances. There are also large direct costs of maintaining and replacing deteriorated infrastructure and indirect costs from loss of production during maintenance work, which place a great burden on society. The focus of this book is on addressing issues concerning performance of cement-based materials in aggressive aqueous environments , by way of this State-of-the-Art Report. The book represents the work of many well-known and respected authors who contributed chapters or parts of chapters. Four main themes were addressed: I. Nature and kinetics of degradation and deterioration mechanisms of cement-based materials in aggressive aqueous environments, II. Modelling of deterioration in such environments, III. Test methods to assess performance of cement-based materials in such environments, and which can be used to characterise and rate relative performance and inform long term predictions, IV. Engineering implications and consequences of deterioration in aggressive aqueous environments, and engineering approaches to the problem.

Admixtures for Concrete - Improvement of Properties - Proceedings of the International RILEM Symposium (Hardcover): E Vazques Admixtures for Concrete - Improvement of Properties - Proceedings of the International RILEM Symposium (Hardcover)
E Vazques
R10,616 Discovery Miles 106 160 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Chemical admixtures are used to modify the properties and behaviour of fresh and hardened concrete. They can enable concrete to be placed more economically, by reducing the plant and labour needed or by allowing modifications to the mix. They are also used to achieve special properties, such as high strength or freeze-thaw durability. Research and development is underway in many parts of the world, looking at fundamental effects of admixtures on cement hydration and rheology, the technological benefits of using admixtures in concrete and the long-term behaviour of concrete containing admixtures. This book draws together reports on research studies into the use of chemical admixtures to improve the properties of concrete. It includes papers from leading research institutes and materials specialists from around the world on six main topics: workability, setting, strength, durability, other properties and technology. The papers were presented at an International RILEM Symposium held in Barcelona, Spain, in May 1990. This book should be of interest to concrete technologists, civil engineers, suppliers of admixtures, ready-mixed and precast concrete materials researchers.

The Stonemason - A History of Building Britain (Paperback): Andrew Ziminski The Stonemason - A History of Building Britain (Paperback)
Andrew Ziminski
R371 R336 Discovery Miles 3 360 Save R35 (9%) Ships in 9 - 17 working days

A stonemason's story of the building of Britain: part archaeological history, part deeply personal insight into an ancient craft. In his thirty-year career, stonemason Andrew Ziminski has worked on many of our greatest monuments. From Neolithic monoliths to Roman baths and temples, from the tower of Salisbury Cathedral to the engine houses, mills and aqueducts of the Industrial Revolution and beyond, The Stonemason is his very personal history of how Britain was built - from the inside out. Stone by different stone, culture by different culture, Andrew Ziminski (with his faithful whippet in tow) takes us on an unforgettable journey by river, road and sea through our countryside showing how the making of Britain's buildings offers an unexpected and new version of our island story. 'My school history lessons were focused around flat pages of facts, events and royal personalities, but for me it was the material aspects of the past, the tangible remnants left behind that were thrilling, and that it was these buildings and places, and learning how they worked, that really brought the past alive.'

Innovating Construction Law - Towards the Digital Age (Paperback): Jim Mason Innovating Construction Law - Towards the Digital Age (Paperback)
Jim Mason
R1,516 Discovery Miles 15 160 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Innovating Construction Law: Towards the Digital Age takes a speculative look at current and emerging technologies and examines how legal practice in the construction industry can best engage with the landscape they represent. The book builds the case for a legal approach based on transparency, traceability and collaboration in order to seize the opportunities presented by technologies such as smart contracts, blockchain, artificial intelligence, big data and building information modelling. The benefits these initiatives bring to the construction sector have the potential to provide economic, societal and environmental benefits as well as reducing the incidence of disputes. The author uses a mixture of black letter law and socio-legal commentary to facilitate the discourse around procurement, law and technology. The sections of the book cover the AS IS position, the TO BE future position as predicted and the STEPS INBETWEEN, which can enable a real change in the industry. The rationale for this approach lies in ensuring that the developments are congruent with the existing frameworks provided by the law. The book proposes various steps that the industry should seriously consider taking from the current position to shape the future of the sector and ultimately create a better, more productive and sustainable construction industry. This book is a readable and engaging guide for students and practitioners looking to learn more about construction law and its relationship with technology and for those seeking a platform for graduate studies in this area.
