These panels are made from wood and they are not supplied sealed. This means that liquids are absorbed into the surface and if they get too ‘wet’, there could be a swelling of the veneer. If the panel is to be used for painting then you should seal the surface with a quality glue size or an acrylic based primer. When you're applying acrylic gesso primer, avoid thinning it with water.

After sizing we recommend priming with acrylic gesso and sanding the surface to produce a smooth yet slightly absorbent surface.

So this half-prepared canvas saves the artist some trouble and still allows them to get the custom surface they want by applying their own gesso. The artist can finish the canvas by adding their own choice of primer to the surface: acrylic primer, clear acrylic medium, homemade genuine gesso or oil primer. Each Claessens canvas undergoes a rigorous treatment and process to meet different requirements for artists.First, all raw canvases are sized with a synthetic PVA glue. For oil primed canvases, the next step involves applying a primer of zinc white paint bound with linseed oil to the glued linen, by means of two knives. The canvas is then put into a drying room for three days where it air-dries naturally.After this first initial drying time, the canvas is then sanded and a coating layer based on titanium white is applied to the canvas by means of two knives and a roller. Linseed oil tends to turn yellow in the dark: for example on the roll or when another object is placed against it. However, if you put it back in the light, any discolouration will disappear. This is a known and normal phenomenon. This does not prevent painting on the canvas, it only has an optical effect.

The clear priming is just a single layer. This is fine for acrylic colour but is not a sufficient barrier to prevent oil colour penetration. If you wish to paint in oils on these canvases you will probably want to apply an additional layer or two of clear primer. Golden Matte Medium works well and a thin layer should be dry enough to paint on by the next day. The matting solids provide an adequate "tooth" for additional paint layers. In thin applications matte medium appears quite translucent, while darkening the canvas to a small degree, similar to a “wet look”.

Made with acrylic gesso these ultra-smooth boards are very absorbent and you may wish to use extra oil in your oil paint. But, they may not be absorbent enough for use with egg tempera which usually needs genuine gesso (homemade with rabbit skin glue and whiting). If the surface isn't absorbent enough the egg tempera paint may lift off the first layer when you apply a second glaze.
