Virtual Testing of Mechanical Systems - Theories and Techniques (Hardcover): Ole Ivar Sivertsen Virtual Testing of Mechanical Systems - Theories and Techniques (Hardcover)
Ole Ivar Sivertsen
R5,824 Discovery Miles 58 240 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

A discussion of the virtual testing of mechanical systems, presenting theories and techniques implemented in the FEDEM Multidisciplinary Simulation Software. The basis for this approach is the non-linear FE formulation and the Master-Slave techniques used for modelling joints and transmissions.

Matrix Theory and Applications with MATLAB (R) (Hardcover): Darald J. Hartfiel Matrix Theory and Applications with MATLAB (R) (Hardcover)
Darald J. Hartfiel
R3,901 Discovery Miles 39 010 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Designed for use in a second course on linear algebra, Matrix Theory and Applications with MATLAB covers the basics of the subject-from a review of matrix algebra through vector spaces to matrix calculus and unitary similarity-in a presentation that stresses insight, understanding, and applications. Among its most outstanding features is the integration of MATLAB throughout the text. Each chapter includes a MATLAB subsection that discusses the various commands used to do the computations in that section and offers code for the graphics and some algorithms used in the text.

All of the material is presented from a matrix point of view with enough rigor for students to learn to compose arguments and proofs and adjust the material to cover other problems. The treatment includes optional subsections covering applications, and the final chapters move beyond basic matrix theory to discuss more advanced topics, such as decompositions, positive definite matrices, graphics, and topology.

Filled with illustrations, examples, and exercises that reinforce understanding, Matrix Theory and Applications with MATLAB allows readers to experiment and visualize results in a way that no other text does. Its rigor, use of MATLAB, and focus on applications better prepares them to use the material in their future work and research, to extend the material, and perhaps obtain new results of their own.

Vibration Simulation Using MATLAB and ANSYS (Hardcover): Michael R. Hatch Vibration Simulation Using MATLAB and ANSYS (Hardcover)
Michael R. Hatch
R5,894 Discovery Miles 58 940 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Transfer function form, zpk, state space, modal, and state space modal forms. For someone learning dynamics for the first time or for engineers who use the tools infrequently, the options available for constructing and representing dynamic mechanical models can be daunting. It is important to find a way to put them all in perspective and have them available for quick reference.

It is also important to have a strong understanding of modal analysis, from which the total response of a system can be constructed. Finally, it helps to know how to take the results of large dynamic finite element models and build small MATLAB® state space models.

Vibration Simulation Using MATLAB and ANSYS answers all those needs. Using a three degree-of-freedom (DOF) system as a unifying theme, it presents all the methods in one book. Each chapter provides the background theory to support its example, and each chapter contains both a closed form solution to the problem-shown in its entirety-and detailed MATLAB code for solving the problem.

Bridging the gap between introductory vibration courses and the techniques used in actual practice, Vibration Simulation Using MATLAB and ANSYS builds the foundation that allows you to simulate your own real-life problems.

Features

o Demonstrates how to solve real problems, covering the vibration of systems from single DOF to finite element models with thousands of DOF
o Illustrates the differences and similarities between different models by tracking a single example throughout the book
o Includes the complete, closed-form solution and the MATLAB code used to solve each problem
o Shows explicitly how to take the results of a realistic ANSYS finite element model and develop a small MATLAB state-space model
o Provides a solid grounding in how individual modes of vibration combine for overall system response

The Finite Element Method Using MATLAB (Hardcover, 2nd edition): Young W Kwon, Hyochoong Bang The Finite Element Method Using MATLAB (Hardcover, 2nd edition)
Young W Kwon, Hyochoong Bang; Series edited by Frank Kreith
R5,136 Discovery Miles 51 360 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Expanded to include a broader range of problems than the bestselling first edition, Finite Element Method Using MATLAB: Second Edition presents finite element approximation concepts, formulation, and programming in a format that effectively streamlines the learning process. It is written from a general engineering and mathematical perspective rather than that of a solid/structural mechanics basis.

What's new in the Second Edition?

Each chapter in the Second Edition now includes an overview that outlines the contents and purpose of each chapter. The author has also added a new chapter of special topics in applications, including cracks, semi-infinite and infinite domains, buckling, and thermal stress. He discusses three different linearization techniques to solve nonlinear differential equations. Also included are new sections on shell formulations and MATLAB programs. These enhancements increase the book's already significant value both as a self-study text and a reference for practicing engineers and scientists.

The Visible Human Project - Informatic Bodies and Posthuman Medicine (Hardcover): Catherine Waldby The Visible Human Project - Informatic Bodies and Posthuman Medicine (Hardcover)
Catherine Waldby
R4,474 Discovery Miles 44 740 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The Visible Human Project is a critical investigation of the spectacular, three-dimensional recordings of real human bodies - dissected, photographed and converted into visual data files - made by the US National Library of Medicine in Baltimore. Catherine Waldby uses new ideas from cultural studies, science studies and social studies of the computer to situate the Visible Human Project in its historical and cultural context, and to consider the meanings such an object has within a computerised culture.
In this fascinating and important book, Catherine Waldby explores how advances in medical technologies have changed the way we view and study the human body, and places the VHP within the history of technologies such as the X-ray and CT-scan, which allow us to view the human interior.
Bringing together medical conceptions of the human body with theories of visual culture from Foucault to Donna Haraway, Waldby links the VHP to a range of other biomedical projects, such as the Human Genome Project and cloning, which approach living bodies as data sources. She argues that the VHP is an example of the increasingly blurred distinction between `living' and 'dead' human bodies, as the bodies it uses are digitally preserved as a resource for living bodies, and considers how computer-based biotechnologies affect both medical and non-medical meanings of the body's life and death, its location and its limits.

Computer Modelling of Concrete Mixtures (Hardcover): Joe Dewar Computer Modelling of Concrete Mixtures (Hardcover)
Joe Dewar
R6,731 Discovery Miles 67 310 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The complexity of specifications and the number of materials options available today for concrete production mean that the traditional procedure of making trial mixes is now unnecessary, expensive and time consuming. However the data generated by trial mixes can be incorporated into the development of computer-based systems and combined with knowledge generated through research and practice. J.D Dewar has spent much of the 20 years between 1979 and 1999 developing systems by which a small amount of materials data can be used confidently to predict the composition of the ideal product to satisfy a specification with maximim economy, or to provide the "batch book" to fulfill all requirements using a specified combination of materials. Equally useful is the potential for forward control by the continuous adjustment of designs to take account of current or developing materials properties.

R4,469 Discovery Miles 44 690 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

3D printing poses many challenges to the traditional law of intellectual property (IP). This book develops a technical method to help overcome some of these legal challenges and difficulties. This is a collection of materials from empirical interviews, workshops and publications that have been carried out in one of the world's leading research projects into the legal impact of 3D printing. The project was designed to establish what legal challenges 3D printing companies thought they faced, and having done that, to establish a technical framework for a solution.

Computational Modeling of Issues in Materials Science, Volume 70 (Hardcover): H. Dreysse, Y. Kawazoe, L T Wille, C Demangeat Computational Modeling of Issues in Materials Science, Volume 70 (Hardcover)
H. Dreysse, Y. Kawazoe, L T Wille, C Demangeat
R6,928 Discovery Miles 69 280 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The Symposium D, entitled "Computational Modeling of Issues in Materials Science" was presented at the combined 1997 International Conference on Applied Materials/European Materials Research Society Spring meeting (ICAM'97/E-MRS'97) held in Strasbourg (France) from 16-20 June 1997.

Those who attended came from all five continents with participants coming from as far away as South Africa, Australia and Eastern Europe. There were 14 invited talks, 54 contributed papers, and 62 posters presented at the symposium.

Computational materials science has truly emerged as a field in itself. The range of phenomena studied and the variety of techniques used indicate that the subject has sufficiently matured that technologically relevant information can now be routinely extracted from computational modeling. These models increasingly use atomistic information from which macroscopic parameters may be determined.

Several papers showed that parallel computers will play a major role in the further development of the field. The Car-Parrinello method emerged as a workhorse for the most advanced simulations which the advent of faster hardware and diffusion of computer codes has brought within easy reach of many research groups. How to consistently go from the micro- to the macro-scale remains one of the great unsolved puzzles in computational materials science and was the subject of much discussion at the symposium. The interdisciplinary side of computational studies of matter was demonstrated in several talks, where authors borrowed methods from nuclear physics, fluid dynamics, and other subjects.

This was a very productive symposium with new collaborations started, many novel ideas generated and a large amount of information disseminated. The meeting gave an excellent idea of the status of computational materials service "anno" 1997.

Manfred M. Fischer
R1,982 Discovery Miles 19 820 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The ability to manipulate spatial data in different forms and to extract additional meaning from them is at the heart of GIS, yet genuine spatial analysis tools are rarely incorporated into commercial software, thus seriously limiting their usefulness. The future of GIS technology wil depend largely on the incorporation of more powerful analytical and modelling functions - and there is agreement within the GIS community of the urgent need to address these issues. This text attempts this task. It presents the latest information on incorporating spatial analysis tools into GIS, and includes concepts and applications from both the environmental and socio-econimc sciences.
