The CBT Art Workbook for Managing Stress (Paperback): Jennifer Guest The CBT Art Workbook for Managing Stress (Paperback)
Jennifer Guest 1
R574 Discovery Miles 5 740 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Using the principles of CBT, these illustrated worksheets help adults to understand and manage feelings of stress. The activities follow the framework of a typical CBT course: how it works, looking at the nature of stress, linking thoughts, feelings, behaviour and physiology cycles, exploring different levels of thinking and beliefs, and identifying goals and future planning. It presents these theories in an accessible way so that adults are familiar with the foundations of CBT they will be using in the worksheets. They can complete them by writing or drawing, alongside the opportunity to colour in parts of the pages as they consider ideas. Suitable for adults in individual or group work, this is an excellent book to use as a standalone resource or in conjunction with professional therapy to deal with stress.

Solution Art - A textbook of art and resource-orientated work (Paperback): Paolo J. Knill, Herbert Eberhart Solution Art - A textbook of art and resource-orientated work (Paperback)
Paolo J. Knill, Herbert Eberhart; Foreword by Margo Fuchs-Knill; Translated by Wayne Sutherland
R1,155 Discovery Miles 11 550 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Counselling, therapy, and coaching always work with the use of language. With art-oriented approaches, the limitations of language can be overcome. One of the most important works of expressive arts therapy, Loesungskunst is now available in English translation. The key concept of intermodality- the authors' term for oscillation between art-analog methods- combines with the primary focus on resources and strong emphasis on solutions to lay the groundwork for the method that is as vital now as it was originally. The importance of imagination, artistic and aesthetic experience to mental wellbeing is showcased, challenging the common focus on the cognitive and emotional facets of mental health. In-depth case studies and explanations illuminate the origins and use of the theoretical frameworks, helping experienced practitioners and trainees alike to engage with the fundamental methods and concepts of expressive arts therapy.

Connecting through Music with People with Dementia - A Guide for Caregivers (Paperback): Robin Rio Connecting through Music with People with Dementia - A Guide for Caregivers (Paperback)
Robin Rio
R689 Discovery Miles 6 890 Ships in 10 - 17 working days

For people with dementia, the world can become a lonely and isolated place. Music has long been a vital instrument in transcending cognitive issues; bringing people together, and allowing a person to live in the moment. Connecting through Music with People with Dementia explains how a caregiver can learn to use melody or rhythm to connect with someone who may be otherwise non-responsive, and how memories can be stimulated by music that resonates with a part of someone's past. This user-friendly book demonstrates how even simple sounds and movements can engage people with dementia, promoting relaxation and enjoyment. All that's needed to succeed is a love of music, and a desire to gain greater communication and more meaningful interaction with people with dementia. The book provides practical advice on using music with people with dementia, and includes a songbook suggesting a range of popular song choices and a chapter focusing on the importance of caregivers looking after themselves as well as the people they care for. Suitable for both family and professional caregivers with no former experience of music therapy, and for music therapy students and entry level professionals, this accessible book will lay bare the secrets of music therapy to all.

Art Therapy with Children on the Autistic Spectrum - Beyond Words (Paperback): Kathy Evans, Janek Dubowski Art Therapy with Children on the Autistic Spectrum - Beyond Words (Paperback)
Kathy Evans, Janek Dubowski
R749 Discovery Miles 7 490 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Research has shown that art therapy can be particularly effective for children with autism and related communication disorders. The extensive range of symptoms experienced by autistic people makes them extremely individual in presentation, so any treatment used must be tailored to a range of varying needs. This text presents a new model of practice, which primarily focuses on communication difficulties. The authors describe how negative behaviours and subsequent tension may be alleviated when the autistic child is involved in interactive art making with the therapist.;The book is divided into three parts: the first part explores art making processes and art work, with an emphasis on how art can be specifically communicative. A history of autism is presented within the therapeutic context. The second part challenges existing methods of practice within art therapy and considers the most appropriate approaches to treating autistic children. The last part discusses research that lead to the formulation of this specific model - methodology and assessment interventions are analyzed, as well as the ongoing development of appropriate assessment instruments. Case studies of art therapy with

The Revealing Image - Analytical Art Psychotherapy in Theory and Practice (Paperback): Joy Schaverien The Revealing Image - Analytical Art Psychotherapy in Theory and Practice (Paperback)
Joy Schaverien
R1,001 Discovery Miles 10 010 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Schaverien painstakingly describes and defines "processes which have so far only been intuitively known to art therapists" (p6) by introducing and elaborating the psychoanalytical concepts of transference and countertransference in relation to the use of visual art objects. The authors stated intention in this book is "to attempt to bridge the perceived gap between the practice of art therapy and analytical forms of psychotherapy..."(p 229) The epistemological base of this venture includes the fields of philosophy, anthropology, and aesthetics, as well as psychoanalysis. Schaverien suggests that analytical art psychotherapy is a way of working analytically with patients who are unsuitable, or unready, for psychotherapy, giving examples of psychotic and borderline patients, children, and patients in psychiatric settings. This is primarily a book about an analytical approach within art therapy, which may be of interest in itself. The material also raises issues of interest to analysts and psychotherapists, whether or not they work with art in the clinical setting. The book clarifies areas of similarity between the disciplines, and also makes areas of difference apparent. For example, most analysts would agree that visual art, like dream material, and other non-verbal representations of the inner world, can at times articulate and communicate meanings which for one reason or another cannot be verbally articulated at the time, and that this can be pertinent to the aim of analysis. However, I think few analysts would include facilities in their consulting rooms for the kind of art processes described in the book. When the analyst is working with materials in this form, the book will be extremely helpful in sorting out the complexity of the transference situation and the role of interpretation. The book is so strongly grounded in experiences emerging in the presence of actual art processes and objects that I think it will be of most interest to those who are interested in the specific clinical issues involved in relating to the making and use of actual art objects within the setting. Schaverien not only describes the processes involved in detail, but also presents technical approaches to the making and handling of art objects within the setting which will inform the capacity of those who are not trained as art therapists to relate to this kind of material in the consulting room.'

Authentic Movement - Essays by Mary Starks Whitehouse, Janet Adler and Joan Chodorow (Paperback): Patrizia Pallaro Authentic Movement - Essays by Mary Starks Whitehouse, Janet Adler and Joan Chodorow (Paperback)
Patrizia Pallaro
R1,087 Discovery Miles 10 870 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Authentic Movement, created by Mary Starks Whitehouse and subsequently developed by Janet Adler and Joan Chodorow, approaches dance and movement therapy from a Jungian perspective. The basic concepts of Authentic Movement are expressed for the first time in one volume through interviews and conversations with these important figures, and their key papers. They emphasize the importance of movement as a means of communication, particularly movement which is unconscious or 'authentic', emerging when the individual has a deep, self-sensing awareness an attitude of 'inner listening'. Such movement can trigger powerful images, feelings and memories arising from as early as infancy or childhood.

Case Study Designs in Music Therapy (Paperback, illustrated edition): Tony Wigram Case Study Designs in Music Therapy (Paperback, illustrated edition)
Tony Wigram; Edited by David Aldridge; Contributions by Cochavit Elefant, Gudrun Aldridge, Denise Grocke, …
R899 Discovery Miles 8 990 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Research and clinical work are often perceived as opposites in the field of music therapy. This book shows, for the first time, how these two areas of work can creatively complement one another, proving beneficial to both disciplines. Each chapter is written by a leading researcher and practitioner in the field, and the book covers a wide spectrum of approaches within different settings. Beginning with methodological and musicological approaches to case studies, the book then moves on to more specific topics such as the use of case studies in an interactive play setting and in music therapy with the elderly. Later chapters explore theoretical aspects, looking at a worked example of music and progressive change during therapy, and how case study designs can be used in practice. A must for all professionals working and studying within the music therapy area, this is also an informative and useful book for health researchers.

R4,888 Discovery Miles 48 880 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Imagination allows individuals and groups to think beyond the here-and-now, to envisage alternatives, to create parallel worlds, and to mentally travel through time. Imagination is both extremely personal (for example, people imagine unique futures for themselves) and deeply social, as our imagination is fed with media and other shared representations. As a result, imagination occupies a central position within the life of mind and society. Expanding the boundaries of disciplinary approaches, the Handbook of Imagination and Culture expertly illustrates this core role of imagination in the development of children, adolescents, adults, and older persons today. Bringing together leading scholars in sociocultural psychology and neighboring disciplines from around the world, this edited volume guides readers towards a much deeper understanding of the conditions of imagining, its resources, its constraints, and the consequences it has on different groups of people in different domains of society. Summarily, this Handbook places imagination at the center, and offers readers new ways to examine old questions regarding the possibility of change, development, and innovation in modern society.

As any parent of a child with autism understands, sometimes helping your child can feel overwhelmingly hard. Autism and the Power of Music helps find insightful, practical new ways for you and your child to connect through music, even when it feels difficult. Because music and language may be processed in the same hemisphere of the brain in children on the spectrum, the techniques in this book can help unlock language in an entirely new way. Music becomes a bridge to help children access language in ways other approaches cannot.
