This book is the catalog for two of the first major exhibits to
show only modernist jewelry from such a broad group of artists.
Both take place in 2008 in Fort Wayne, Indiana: one at The Fort
Wayne Museum of Art (May 2 to August 24) and the other at The
University of St. Francis School of Creative Arts (May 2 to May
30). Over fifty collectors and living art jewelers have lent some
of the best examples of this innovative style. Sculptors Alexander
Calder, Harry Bertoia, Jose de Rivera, Peter and Daniel
Macchiarini, Earl and Tod Pardon, and merry rank are among the 96
artists featured, along with their extensive jewelry creations.
Their work was experimental and stimulated originality in
successive generations. Plastics, pearls, brass, copper, silver,
gold, and enamels are among the materials found here in
mini-sculptures and jewelry ornaments for men and women alike. The
author's extensive research uncovers connections among the artists
and documents this important art period and medium. Artists,
collectors, cultural historians, and students all will want to see
the exhibits and own the catalog.

This is a detailed study of the illustrations to Amir Khusrau's Khamsah, in which twenty discourses are followed by a brief parable, and four romances. Amir Khusrau (1253-1325) lived the greater part of adventurous life in Delhi; he composed in Persian, and also in Hindi. From the point of view of manuscript illustration, his most important work is his Khamsah (Quintet'). Khusrau's position as a link between cultures of Persia and India means that the early illustrated copies of the Khamsah have a particular interest. The first extant exemplar is from the Persian area in the late 14th century, but a case can be made that work was probably illustrated earlier in India.

Fold forming is a creative and dynamic way to manipulate metal.
This practical guide explains the process, starting with simple
line folds and showing how a few techniques can reveal the rich
potential of the method. Written for jewellers and metalsmiths, it
goes on to explore the many beautiful ways in which fold forming
can be used to distort and shape metal to incredible effect. It
introduces the concept of fold forming by exploring different
methods and types of single folds; it covers how to create multiple
folds in sheet metal using hammers and then the rolling mill to
forge folds; it explains how microfolding is particularly suited to
jewellery and smallwork, and can be used to strengthen thin
material. Finally, it encourages interpretation, experimentation
and development of the techniques to produce original pieces.

Royalty, Aristocrats, American heiresses, exiled Russian Grand
Dukes, Randlords, Maharajas, Socialites and Financiers with newly
made fortunes flocked to Faberge in London to buy gifts for each
other. The Imperial Russian Goldsmith's London branch was the only
one outside of Russia and its jewelled and enamelled contents were
as popular there as they were in St. Petersburg or Moscow. Using
previously unreferenced sources and a newly discovered archive of
papers relating to Faberge in London, Kieran McCarthy studies the
branch's structure, customers and exclusive stock. The book will be
of interest to enthusiasts of the decorative arts, the social
history of the Edwardian Golden Age and especially of European
Royalty. Faberge's works were and continue to be intimately
associated with the British Royal Family. For Violet Trefusis,
daughter of King Edward VII's mistress Mrs. Keppel and lover of
Vita Sackville-West, a Faberge cigarette case was the emblem of
Royalty, as symbolical as the 'bookies' cigar', or the 'ostler's
straw'.
Many designers, from jewellers to architects, use folding
techniques to make three-dimensional forms from two-dimensional
sheets of fabric, cardboard, plastic, metal and other materials.

pleated surfaces, curved folding and crumpling. It has been updated
with a new chapter covering some lesser-known techniques,
suggesting yet more creative possibilities. The techniques are
accompanied by clear step-by-step drawings, specially commissioned
photography and ten new instructional videos.
Including previously unpublished and recently re-discovered designs
for the interior of the Museum, Olivia Horsfall Turner's
fascinating new book, the latest in the V&A 19th-Century
Series, looks at the relationship between architect and designer
Owen Jones and the South Kensington Museum (later the V&A) in
the period from the Museum's establishment in the 1850s to Jones's
death in 1874. It focuses on key moments in Jones's relationship
with the Museum: the creation of his well-known publication The
Grammar of Ornament (1856) and his less widely known Examples of
Chinese Ornament (1867), and the decoration of the Museum's
so-called Oriental Court between 1863 and 1865. Jones's
collaboration with the Museum over a period of almost 20 years is
of special interest not only thanks to his status as one of the
most influential design theorists of the 19th century, but also for
the light that it sheds on the identity of the early Museum and its
imperial context.

This book provides the detailed knowledge you need to successfully
choose, install, and operate a milling machine in your home
workshop. Lavishly illustrated with color photographs and diagrams,
it will help you to understand which accessories are essential, and
which can be postponed until your activity demands it. The usage of
each machine and accessory is explained in detail for the vast
majority of applications in an active shop. The real learning curve
begins once your milling machine and its accessories are chosen and
installed. Discover your options for holding the many diverse
shapes and sizes of work pieces that will inevitably surface during
your machine's life. This critical task is by far the most
important part of learning to use the machine. Learn how to decide
which method is best for any application-whether to use a vice or
an angle plate, or mount the piece directly onto the worktable, or
even produce a fixture specifically for the task. With the work
piece set up and ready for machining, the book goes on to show you
the right ways to cut metal and maintain your milling tools.
Robert Crumb first began drawing record covers in 1968 when Janis
Joplin, a fellow Haight Ashbury denizen, asked him to provide a
cover for her album Cheap Thrills. It was an invitation the budding
artist couldn't resist, especially since he had been fascinated
with record covers-particularly for the legendary jazz, country,
and old-time blues music of the 1920s and 1930s-since he was a
teen. This early collaboration proved so successful that Crumb went
on to draw hundreds of record covers for both new artists and
largely forgotten masters. So remarkable were Crumb's artistic
interpretations of these old 78 rpm singles that the art itself
proved influential in their rediscovery in the 1960s and 1970s.
Including such classics as Truckin' My Blues Away, Harmonica Blues,
and Please Warm My Weiner, Crumb's opus also features more recent
covers done for CDs. R. Crumb: The Complete Record Cover Collection
is a must-have for any lover of graphics and old-time music.
