Calumet Beginnings - Ancient Shorelines and Settlements at the South End of Lake Michigan (Paperback): Kenneth J. Schoon Calumet Beginnings - Ancient Shorelines and Settlements at the South End of Lake Michigan (Paperback)
Kenneth J. Schoon
R681 Discovery Miles 6 810 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The landscape of the Calumet, an area that sits astride the Indiana Illinois state line at the southern end of Lake Michigan was shaped by the glaciers that withdrew toward the end of the last ice age about 45,000 years ago. In the years since, many natural forces, including wind, running water, and the waves of Lake Michigan, have continued to shape the land. The lake's modern and ancient shorelines have served as Indian trails, stagecoach routes, highways, and sites that have evolved into many of the cities, towns, and villages of the Calumet area. People have also left their mark on the landscape: Indians built mounds; farmers filled in wetlands; governments commissioned ditches and canals to drain marshes and change the direction of rivers; sand was hauled from where it was plentiful to where it was needed for urban and industrial growth. These thousands of years of weather and movements of peoples have given the Calumet region its distinct climate and appeal."

Sand Dune Conservation, Management and Restoration (Hardcover, 2013 ed.): J Patrick Doody Sand Dune Conservation, Management and Restoration (Hardcover, 2013 ed.)
J Patrick Doody
R3,674 Discovery Miles 36 740 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book deals with the development of temperate coastal sand dunes and the way these have been influenced by human activity. The different states in which the habitat exists both for the beach/foredune and inland dune are reviewed against the pressures exerted upon them. Options for management are considered and the likely consequences of taking a particular course of action highlighted. These options include traditional approaches to the conservation and management of wildlife and landscapes as well as habitat restoration. The way the value of the areas changes under different management regimes is considered mainly from an environmental perspective. Consideration is given to new approaches to management and restoration including adopting a more dynamic approach. Audience This book will be of interest to academics, students and professionals concerned with policy formulation and /or actively managing coastal areas.

Coastal Wetlands (Paperback): Government Accountabilty Office Coastal Wetlands (Paperback)
Government Accountabilty Office
R1,102 R1,030 Discovery Miles 10 300 Save R72 (7%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Louisiana, home to 40 percent of all coastal wetlands in the lower 48 states, is projected to lose almost 17 square miles of coastline each year for the next 50 years to storms, sea level rise, and land subsidence. Coastal wetlands are an important wildlife and commercial resource, and provide a natural buffer against the storm surge that accompanies storms and hurricanes. The Coastal Wetlands Planning, Protection and Restoration Act (CWPPRA) established a program in 1990 that undertakes projects to stem coastal wetland losses. Recently, the Congress passed other measures that will make billions in new funding available for coastal Louisiana over the next 20 years. GAO has prepared this report under the Comptroller General's authority as part of a continued effort to assist the Congress. GAO reviewed the CWPPRA program to identify the (1) types of projects that have been designed and constructed to restore and protect coastal wetlands, as well as their estimated costs and benefits, and (2) lessons learned from past and ongoing restoration efforts that can help guide future efforts. GAO's review included interviews with each program agency. This review emphasises the need for agencies to carefully from two agencies which have been incorporated as appropriate. This is an excerpted and indexed version. consider the lessons learned from the CWPPRA program as they propose significantly larger efforts to restore Louisiana's coast. GAO received technical comments

Coasts Under Stress - Restructuring and Social-Ecological Health (Paperback): Rosemary E. Ommer Coasts Under Stress - Restructuring and Social-Ecological Health (Paperback)
Rosemary E. Ommer
R940 Discovery Miles 9 400 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

While coasts are often places of unsurpassing beauty, many coastal communities suffer from poverty, unemployment, health risks, and the effects of environmental degradation. Coasts Under Stress is a unique interdisciplinary exploration of the complex interplay of economy, culture, environment, and health in the coastal communities of eastern and western Canada. Rosemary Ommer and her project team combine formal scientific (natural and social) and humanist analysis with an examination of the lived experience of coastal people. They analyze community erosion created by economic decline and the ecosystem damage caused by unrelenting industrial pressure on natural resources and look at the history of coastal communities, their resource bases, their economies, and the way the lives of people are embedded in their environments.Coasts Under Stress shows that many coastal people are determined to survive in the places they love and stresses the need for investment to encourage the recovery of coastal communities.

Monitoring in Coastal Environments Using Foraminifera and Thecamoebian Indicators (Paperback): David B. Scott, Franco S.... Monitoring in Coastal Environments Using Foraminifera and Thecamoebian Indicators (Paperback)
David B. Scott, Franco S. Medioli, Charles T. Schafer
R1,191 Discovery Miles 11 910 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Foraminifera and thecamoebians are highly sensitive to environmental stress (natural or anthropogenic). This feature means that they can be used to biologically characterize a variety of freshwater and coastal marine environments. Due to their small size and hard shells, large quantities are also found fossilised in core samples, making them ideal for reconstructing past environmental conditions. This volume covers the specific environmental applications of these organisms and contains an introduction to the subject, detailed descriptions of methods and techniques and case studies. Written for non-specialists, this book will appeal to resource managers and consultants in the public and private sector who routinely work on coastal environmental problems. The book will also serve as a supplementary text for graduate students in many courses on environmental monitoring, ecological baseline studies and environmental science.

Emin OEzsoy
R2,673 Discovery Miles 26 730 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This textbook develops a fundamental understanding of geophysical fluid dynamics by providing a mathematical description of fluid properties, kinematics and dynamics as influenced by earth's rotation. Its didactic value is based on elaborate treatment of basic principles, derived equations, exemplary solutions and their interpretation. Both starting graduate students and experienced scientists can closely follow the mathematical development of the basic theory applied to the flow of uniform density fluids on a rotating earth, with (1) basic physics introducing the "novel" effects of rotation for flows on planetary scales, (2) simplified dynamics of shallow water and quasi-geostrophic theories applied to a variety of steady, unsteady flows and geophysical wave motions, demonstrating the restoring effects of Coriolis acceleration, earth's curvature (beta) and topographic steering, (3) conservation of vorticity and energy at geophysical scales, and (4) specific applications to help demonstrate the ability to create and solve new problems in this very rich field. A comprehensive review of the complex geophysical flows of the ocean and the atmosphere is closely knitted with this basic description, intended to be developed further in the second volume that addresses density stratified geophysical fluid dynamics.

Oceans - Science and Solutions for Australia (Paperback): Bruce Mapstone Oceans - Science and Solutions for Australia (Paperback)
Bruce Mapstone
R686 Discovery Miles 6 860 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Australia has the third largest marine estate in the world, extending from the tropics to Antarctica and including vast areas of the Indian, Pacific and Southern Oceans. We have a good reputation for management of our marine estate but there is still much to understand about how our actions affect the oceans, including through climate change, fishing, resource extraction, shipping, and recreation and tourism. Our oceans are tremendous resources, culturally, socially and economically, and are repositories for incredible biodiversity. Oceans provide food and energy and influence weather and climate across the country. Indigenous Australians have had cultural and livelihood relationships with our oceans for thousands of years. Most Australians live within an hour's drive of the coast and the seaside is a valued recreational destination, as it is for increasing numbers of international tourists. Australia's oceans affect our every activity and managing them well is vital to our nation. Oceans: Science and Solutions for Australia summarises decades of scientific research by CSIRO and other agencies to describe what we know about our oceans, how research contributes to their use and management, and how new technologies are changing marine research. It provides engaging and accessible reading for all those interested in Australia's magnificent marine estate.
