Achievement and Motivation - A Social-Developmental Perspective (Hardcover, New): Ann K. Boggiano, Thane S. Pittman Achievement and Motivation - A Social-Developmental Perspective (Hardcover, New)
Ann K. Boggiano, Thane S. Pittman
R2,958 Discovery Miles 29 580 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The basic theme of this book concerns the relations between motivation and achievement, particularly as they relate to educational settings. The issues are addressed from a social-developmental perspective. The book is organized into three sections. The development of intrinsic and extrinsic motivational orientations is addressed in the first section, where contributors offer their latest account of the distinction between the two orientations, emphasizing how the two motivational systems develop. The effects of motivational orientations on interpersonal interaction and on creativity are addressed in the two subsequent chapters. The second section focuses on the relation between motivation and the experience of competence. Three chapters address the development of competence, affect, and motivation from grade school to junior high; the effects of competence information on intrinsic motivation; and the development of competence assessment processes. In the third section the relation between motivation and achievement is explored. Two chapters discuss the effect of extrinsic pressures on self-regulation, and on the relations among intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, performance, motivational style and learned helplessness. Finally, the concepts of optimal degrees of pressure and performance, and of defensive behavior in the form of self-handicapping, are discussed in the last two chapters. A final summary chapter provides an overview of the basic themes of the book.

The Palgrave Handbook of Transformational Giftedness for Education (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022): Robert J. Sternberg, Don Ambrose,... The Palgrave Handbook of Transformational Giftedness for Education (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022)
Robert J. Sternberg, Don Ambrose, Sareh Karami
R4,981 Discovery Miles 49 810 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This handbook examines what education would look like if it prepared gifted students to transform the world-to make it a better place for all, not just for those who receive extra resources from schools in return for being labeled as "gifted." The editors explore how transformationally gifted people can seek to make the world a better and more just place: they try to make a positive, meaningful, and possibly enduring contribution to changing things in the world that are not working. They do not view "giftedness" merely as a transaction whereby, in exchange for being labeled as "gifted," they accrue benefits to themselves: such as a more prestigious education, more income, or residence in a more exclusive community. The overarching aim of this book is to present conceptions of what identification and instruction of the gifted would look like if the focus of gifted education was transformational rather than transactional. What if gifted education did not focus so much on acceleration vs. enrichment, or pull-out versus in-class integration, but rather on how to be gifted in giving back-in using one's gifts to create a better world?

Lauren Gatti
R3,267 Discovery Miles 32 670 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book advances a new framework for learning to teach, using in-depth case studies to show how learning to teach-in any type of program-can best be understood as a recursive and dynamic process, wherein teachers differentially access programmatic, relational, experiential, disciplinary, and dispositional resources. In the last twenty years, debates in the field of teacher preparation have increasingly become paralyzing and divisive as rhetoric around the failure of university teacher preparation intensifies. The author addresses the historical and practical factors that animate these debates, arguing that novice teachers and teacher educators must understand the central conflicts in the field; however, the book also advances a way of approaching learning to teach that accounts for but does not get stuck at the level of programmatic designation. Using lively, in-depth case studies, the author shows how novice urban English teachers from two different teacher preparation pathways-a university-based program and an urban teacher residency-learn to teach within a policy context of high-stakes testing and "college readiness."

Understanding How We Learn - A Visual Guide (Paperback): Yana Weinstein, Megan Sumeracki, Oliver Caviglioli Understanding How We Learn - A Visual Guide (Paperback)
Yana Weinstein, Megan Sumeracki, Oliver Caviglioli
R797 Discovery Miles 7 970 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Educational practice does not, for the most part, rely on research findings. Instead, there's a preference for relying on our intuitions about what's best for learning. But relying on intuition may be a bad idea for teachers and learners alike. This accessible guide helps teachers to integrate effective, research-backed strategies for learning into their classroom practice. The book explores exactly what constitutes good evidence for effective learning and teaching strategies, how to make evidence-based judgments instead of relying on intuition, and how to apply findings from cognitive psychology directly to the classroom. Including real-life examples and case studies, FAQs, and a wealth of engaging illustrations to explain complex concepts and emphasize key points, the book is divided into four parts: Evidence-based education and the science of learning Basics of human cognitive processes Strategies for effective learning Tips for students, teachers, and parents. Written by "The Learning Scientists" and fully illustrated by Oliver Caviglioli, Understanding How We Learn is a rejuvenating and fresh examination of cognitive psychology's application to education. This is an essential read for all teachers and educational practitioners, designed to convey the concepts of research to the reality of a teacher's classroom.

Entrepreneurial Music Education - Professional Learning in Schools and the Industry (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): Kristina Kelman Entrepreneurial Music Education - Professional Learning in Schools and the Industry (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Kristina Kelman
R1,412 Discovery Miles 14 120 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book addresses the gap between formal music education curricula and the knowledge and skills necessary to enter the professional music industry. It uses extensive data from a long-running research project where high school students were invited to start their own business venture, Youth Music Industries. Not only did this act as a business venture, but it also functioned as a learning environment informed by the concepts of Communities of Practice and social capital. Exploring how entrepreneurial qualities were developed, their learning was subsequently captured and distilled into a set of design principles: in this way, a pedagogical approach was developed that can be transferred across the creative industries more broadly. This book will be of interest and value to scholars of music education, as well as those preparing students for the creative industries.

Teacher-Student Power Relations in Primary Schools in Hong Kong (Hardcover): Mei-Yee Wong Teacher-Student Power Relations in Primary Schools in Hong Kong (Hardcover)
Mei-Yee Wong
R3,009 Discovery Miles 30 090 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book examines, from a sociological perspective, teacher-student power relations in classroom learning and teaching. The case study consists of four Hong Kong primary schools-and sixteen classrooms therein-that were selected as research sites to explore the concept of teacher-student power relations. Observations, individual interviews, and document analysis were the main data collection methods employed. Wong provides the historical context for the issue of teacher-student power relationship by reviewing the traditional Chinese cultures and values, in particular the values of respect for authority and for teachers, and demonstrates the intermingling of Chinese and Western cultures in contemporary Hong Kong Chinese society. She reviews the major educational initiatives carried out in Hong Kong since the 1970s, showing how Western educational policies promoting student-centric teaching modes have encouraged changes in classroom culture. With reference to the observed seventy-three lessons, the study identified three patterns of teacher-student power relations-Teacher Domination, Relatively Balanced Opportunity for Power Sharing, and Student Self-Empowerment-each involving different degrees of power being exercised by teacher and students. The coexistence of these three power patterns and the two corresponding power situations (student empowerment and disempowerment) can be explained as the result of multileveled, intertwined interactions among six factors related to social culture, education policy, school and classroom contexts, and to the individual players concerned. The book thus contributes to the understanding of teacher-student power relations in the context of Hong Kong by proposing a theoretical framework that reflects local socio-cultural, educational, and school contexts.

A Rights-Based Preventative Approach for Psychosocial Well-being in Childhood (Hardcover, 2010 Ed.): Murli Desai A Rights-Based Preventative Approach for Psychosocial Well-being in Childhood (Hardcover, 2010 Ed.)
Murli Desai
R5,371 Discovery Miles 53 710 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Children are one of the most important phase of human development and the most important target group for social work intervention. Most of the schools of human development and social work round the world have an elective course on children and some offer a concentration in this area. There are plenty of textbooks on intervention with children published by Western authors, focusing on useful theories and skills but mainly at the remedial level. They neither use the preventative approach nor the child rights perspective, which has been found useful in the developing nations. The books on child rights are generally published by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and other international organisations working in the field of children such as Save the Children. These books focus on the useful child rights perspective but they neither integrate theories nor use the preventative approach. The proposed book A Rights-based Preventative Approach for Children's Psychosocial Well-Being: will be the first to apply the child rights perspective and the preventative approach to intervention for children's psychosocial well-being. It is an integration of theories with practice and teaching relevant in different parts of the world. The book is divided into the following three parts: Part 1: Introduction to a Rights-based Preventative Approach for Children's Psychosocial Well-Being.- Part 2: Primary Prevention for Children's Psychosocial Well-Being.- Part 3: Secondary and Tertiary Prevention for Children's Psychosocial Well-Being
