Revealing the Inner Worlds of Young Children - The MacArthur Story Stem Battery and Parent-Child Narratives (Hardcover, New):... Revealing the Inner Worlds of Young Children - The MacArthur Story Stem Battery and Parent-Child Narratives (Hardcover, New)
Robert N. Emde, Denis P. Wolfe, David Oppenheim 1
R2,567 Discovery Miles 25 670 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Typically, we make sense of our experiences and interactions in a way that is guided by emotion and that takes the form of a narrative or a story. Using narratives, we can tell others about our expeirence, share common meanings, imagine possibilities, and co-construct new meanings. It is thus a momentous development when, at around age three, a child acquires the capacity to construct narratives. The book reports the work of a 20-year collaboration between 36 psychologists who have created and investigated a new tool to elicit and analyze children's narratives. This tool is the MacArthur Story Stem Battery, a systematic collection of story beginnings that are referred to as 'stems.' These stems are designed to elicit information from children about their representational worlds. This method is particularly exciting because using it allows developmental psychologists to gain information directly from children about their emotional states and what they are able to understand, and in turn, to use this information to explore significant emotional differences among children.

Dialogical Approaches and Tensions in Learning and Development - At the Frontiers of the Mind (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021):... Dialogical Approaches and Tensions in Learning and Development - At the Frontiers of the Mind (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
Nathalie Muller Mirza, Marcelo Dos Santos Mamed
R3,321 Discovery Miles 33 210 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The book pursues the goal of exploring and strengthening a dialogical approach of communication and cognition. It brings together contributions from world-leading researchers related to the dialogical approach in education and psychology. It presents, among others, the place of language and materiality in the development of communication and thinking, as well as the role of the methods in the relationship between researchers and participants. This leads to an innovative definition of the dialogicality and how a dialogical approach can provide heuristic (conceptual and methodological) tools to better understand how people think, communicate and learn in a complex world. The authors hereby develop an epistemological framework inspired by scholars such as Michail Bakhtin, Lev Vygotsky and Herbert Mead under the assumption that dialogue, or dialogicality - and therefore the presence of the other - is fundamentally entangled into the human thinking and development. This book contributes to the understanding of human communication, cognition and mind, and participates in a scientific dialogue which helps to advance future research. It includes theoretical and empirical chapters and presents innovative methods of inquiry, which makes it a useful tool for both teaching and research.

The Power of Anticipatory Images in Student Achievement (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): James M. Davy The Power of Anticipatory Images in Student Achievement (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
James M. Davy
R2,427 Discovery Miles 24 270 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book features ten high academically achieving, low-income, inner city students from Newark, New Jersey, who graduated from public high schools at or near the top of their class and continued to excel in college. Using a qualitative research design, the author interviewed the ten students and the person who most influenced their educational progress about what motivated them to achieve at such high levels. Three mutually reinforcing anticipatory images emerged as a common element of their stories. In their own voices, the students describe the anticipatory images they framed, how they developed them, and how they used them to their advantage. Davy advances a theoretical model of the Anticipatory Competent student who continually progresses in the directions of the images projected ahead.

The Social Model of Disability in India - Politics of Identity and Power (Hardcover): Ranjita Dawn The Social Model of Disability in India - Politics of Identity and Power (Hardcover)
Ranjita Dawn
R4,213 Discovery Miles 42 130 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book presents various paradigms and debates on the diverse issues concerning disability in India from a sociological perspective. It studies disability in the context of its relationship with concepts such as culture/religion, media, literature, and gender to address the inherent failures in challenging prevalent stereotypical and oppressive ideologies. It traces the theological history of disability and studies the present-day universalized social notions of disablement. The volume challenges the predominant perception of disability being only a medical or biological concern and provides deeper insight into the impact of representation through an analysis of the discourse and criteria for 'normalcy' in films from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It analyzes the formation of perspectives through a study of representation of disability in print media, especially children's literature, comics, and graphic novels. The author also discusses the policies and provisions available in India for students with disabilities, especially women who have to also contend with gender inequality and gender-based discrimination. The book will be of interest to scholars and researchers of disability studies, educational psychology, special education, sociology, gender studies, politics of education, and media ecology. It will also be useful for educationalists, NGOs, special educators, disability specialists, media and communication professionals, and counsellors.

Critical Thinking for Better Learning - New Insights from Cognitive Science (Hardcover): Carole Hamilton Critical Thinking for Better Learning - New Insights from Cognitive Science (Hardcover)
Carole Hamilton
R1,770 Discovery Miles 17 700 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Critical Thinking for Better Learning shifts the focus from teaching to learning and from presenting information to creating challenges that teach students how to think in your discipline. The shift derives from three new insights from cognitive science: that we think by analogy, that we learn best when we process clear, focused sources and develop our own theories about our findings, and that there are key threshold concepts that define the discipline and make it attractive to young practitioners. This book explains each of these insights in direct, clear language, with examples of how to implement them in your own classroom.

Sleep and Learning - The Magic that Makes Us Healthy and Smart (Hardcover): Gary R. Plaford Sleep and Learning - The Magic that Makes Us Healthy and Smart (Hardcover)
Gary R. Plaford
R2,109 Discovery Miles 21 090 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The gradual and cumulative sleep deprivation that many students endure not only makes them too tired to focus well but also hampers memory consolidation and motivation. If we really want to improve school performance and graduation rates, we cannot afford to overlook something as basic and critical as sleep. Additionally, if we want to make an impact on both the physical and mental health of individuals in our society (which impacts mortality rates, health care, health insurance rates, the aging process, etc.), we need to begin by educating our youth about the relevance of sleep.

Contemporary Daoism, Organic Relationality, and Curriculum of Integrative Creativity (Hardcover): Hongyu Wang Contemporary Daoism, Organic Relationality, and Curriculum of Integrative Creativity (Hardcover)
Hongyu Wang
R2,685 Discovery Miles 26 850 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Creativity in the West is often perceived as "cutting edge" and "ground-breaking" in a singular act of giving birth to the new. However, to what degree has this model of breaking away from others and the world contributed to the current crisis in education, society, and ecology even before the tragic COVID-19 pandemic and responses to it? How can our reimagining of creativity contribute to the mutual flourishing of humanity and of relations between humans and the planet? Daoist creativity, based upon relationality and interdependence, has much to offer to today's curriculum as a complicated conversation to sustain life and renew the world. Integrative, emergent, embodied, co-creative, and ecological, Daoist creativity has a built-in opening to difference through the organic relationality of Yin/Yang dynamics. This book focuses on one essential thread in Daoism-integrative creativity through organic relationality-and weaves its interplay with Western thought through multiple and intertwined dimensions of curriculum. Exploring Dao as dynamic and setting creative curriculum in motion, this book juxtaposes the notion of Wuwei and self-organization to conceptualize emergent classroom dynamics, and re-envisions the inner landscape of education through negotiating dialogues between the Jungian psyche and Daoist dynamics. Further, it explores gendered implications of Daoism to interact with feminism and formulates the pursuit of inner and outer peace through creative harmony to inform nonviolence curriculum. Synthesizing cross-cultural insights and wisdom, it provides an in-depth and intuitive understanding of the interactions between Daoist and Western creativity and elaborates a curriculum of integrative creativity for students, teachers, and their educational community. Let us all attend to the urgent call for individual and collective awakenings and for creativity that connects.

Flourishing in the Holistic Classroom (Hardcover): Lisa Marie Tucker Flourishing in the Holistic Classroom (Hardcover)
Lisa Marie Tucker
R2,524 Discovery Miles 25 240 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In a time of unprecedented changes globally, Flourishing in the Holistic Classroom offers an educational model that is dynamic, organic, and adaptive. The book offers key principles, dispositions, and practices that holistic educators draw from to create learning environments in which their students can flourish. This book describes learning that is based on a balance of inner and outer ways of knowing, with an emphasis on the inner life or soul of the learner. This is illustrated through accounts of running an arts camp using the inquiry process and experiences with teacher candidates. A key principle of holistic education is connection, which is explored through experiential examples such as connections between learners and each other, the teacher, and their subject of study. The role that mindfulness practice and teacher presence plays in the classroom, as well as working with fear and vulnerability are addressed through detailed narratives. The breadth of the author's experience including being an early years teacher, a director of programs and exhibits in a children's museum, and working with pre-service teachers is woven throughout the book. Reflections from former teacher candidates highlight the influence that holistic pedagogy has on learners. The book concludes with an invitation to the reader to embrace a holistic, integrative approach to education, which creates fertile ground for student flourishing. Flourishing in the Holistic Classroom is intended to support teachers, administrators, academics, pre-service teachers and graduate students.

A Holistic Educator's Journey - Seeking Wholeness in America, Canada, Japan and Asia (Hardcover): John P Miller A Holistic Educator's Journey - Seeking Wholeness in America, Canada, Japan and Asia (Hardcover)
John P Miller
R2,524 Discovery Miles 25 240 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This memoir describes the journey of John (Jack) Miller. The book explores how his personal journey is related to the work he has done in holistic education, contemplative education, and spirituality in education. In holistic education the personal and professional are connected. Professor Miller's journey includes events, books, teachers, and the many factors in his life that have contributed to his work, which includes more than 20 books and extensive travel around the world. An example of the relationship between the personal and the professional is that Jack began meditating in 1974 and this practice has provided the foundation for much of his teaching and writing. Professor Miller's book, The Holistic Curriculum, first published in 1988 along with the publication of the Holistic Education Review have been seen as the beginning of holistic education as a field of study. Since his journey has been connected with so many other holistic educators, this book can serve as one perspective on how the field has unfolded over the past 35 years. Besides this historical perspective the book includes a chapter on his meditation practice as well his beliefs. There is also a chapter on his teaching and how he attempts to embody holistic education in his classroom
