Teacher-Student Power Relations in Primary Schools in Hong Kong (Hardcover): Mei-Yee Wong Teacher-Student Power Relations in Primary Schools in Hong Kong (Hardcover)
Mei-Yee Wong
R3,009 Discovery Miles 30 090 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book examines, from a sociological perspective, teacher-student power relations in classroom learning and teaching. The case study consists of four Hong Kong primary schools-and sixteen classrooms therein-that were selected as research sites to explore the concept of teacher-student power relations. Observations, individual interviews, and document analysis were the main data collection methods employed. Wong provides the historical context for the issue of teacher-student power relationship by reviewing the traditional Chinese cultures and values, in particular the values of respect for authority and for teachers, and demonstrates the intermingling of Chinese and Western cultures in contemporary Hong Kong Chinese society. She reviews the major educational initiatives carried out in Hong Kong since the 1970s, showing how Western educational policies promoting student-centric teaching modes have encouraged changes in classroom culture. With reference to the observed seventy-three lessons, the study identified three patterns of teacher-student power relations-Teacher Domination, Relatively Balanced Opportunity for Power Sharing, and Student Self-Empowerment-each involving different degrees of power being exercised by teacher and students. The coexistence of these three power patterns and the two corresponding power situations (student empowerment and disempowerment) can be explained as the result of multileveled, intertwined interactions among six factors related to social culture, education policy, school and classroom contexts, and to the individual players concerned. The book thus contributes to the understanding of teacher-student power relations in the context of Hong Kong by proposing a theoretical framework that reflects local socio-cultural, educational, and school contexts.

Gillian Shotton
R1,232 Discovery Miles 12 320 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Life story work is a term often used to describe an approach that helps looked after and adopted children to talk and learn about their life experiences with the help of a trusted adult. This book is an essential step-by-step guide for carers and professionals seeking to carry out life story work with a traumatised or vulnerable child in their care. Underpinned by positive psychology and drawing on up-to-date research and real-life practice, the book offers a sound theoretical understanding of life story work as well as a practical and easy-to-use programme of sessions. Each session covers the equipment and information needed, a consideration of who is best placed to carry out the work, and answers to commonly raised questions. Also discussed are age-appropriate approaches and ideas for extending each session into other activities and methods to make it more feasible for life story work to be a shared activity between two or three adults who know the child well. This book gives professionals and carers the confidence to carry out life story work in a way that is sensitive to the child's needs and positive for their self-perception and relationships.

Charles M Reigeluth, Yun-Jo An
R4,498 Discovery Miles 44 980 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Merging the Instructional Design Process with Learner-Centered Theory brings together the innovations of two previously divided processes - learning design strategies/theories and instructional systems development - into a new introductory textbook. Using a holistic rather than fragmented approach that includes top-level, mid-level, and lower-level design, this book provides guidance for major topics such as non-instructional interventions, just-in-time analysis, rapid-prototype approaches, and learner-centered, project-based, anytime-anywhere instruction. Informed by the authors' considerable experience and leadership throughout dramatic shifts in today's learning landscape, this book offers the next generation of instructional designers a fresh perspective that synthesizes and pushes beyond the basics of design and development.

Reasoning, Argumentation, and Deliberative Democracy (Hardcover): David Moshman Reasoning, Argumentation, and Deliberative Democracy (Hardcover)
David Moshman
R4,509 Discovery Miles 45 090 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In light of the latest research from cognitive and developmental psychology, this key text explores reasoning, rationality, and democracy, considering the unique nature of each and their relationship to each other. Broadening our understanding from the development of reasoning and rationality in individuals to encompass social considerations of argumentation and democracy, the book connects psychological literature to philosophy, law, political science, and educational policy. Based on psychological research, Moshman sets out a system of deliberative democracy that promotes collaborative reasoning, rational institutions such as science and law, education aimed at the promotion of rationality, and intellectual freedom for all. Also including the biological bases of logic, metacognition, and collaborative reasoning, Moshman argues that, despite systematic flaws in human reasoning, there are reasons for a cautiously optimistic assessment of the potential for human rationality and the prospects for democracy. Reasoning, Argumentation, and Deliberative Democracy will be essential reading for all researchers of thinking and reasoning from psychology, philosophy, and education.

Sustainable Futures for Higher Education - The Making of Knowledge Makers (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Jaan Valsiner, Anastasiia... Sustainable Futures for Higher Education - The Making of Knowledge Makers (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Jaan Valsiner, Anastasiia Lutsenko, Alexandra Antoniouk
R2,924 Discovery Miles 29 240 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This volume addresses the current situation in higher education and what creative action needs to be taken for the future development of the various systems of higher education. Higher education in the 21st centuries is under immense pressure from various sides. First, there is dramatic limitation of funding from public sources and limited and selective funding support from private sources that is re-constructing the landscape of higher education in most societies around the World. Secondly there is the continuous stream of administrative re-organization efforts of political origins (e.g. "the Bologna process") that guide the advancement of higher education in our present time. Increasing privatization of all forms of higher education-from bachelor to doctoral levels-and its corresponding focus on the advancement of the kind of knowledge that has immediate applicability in various spheres of societies leads to the question- what kind of creativity is expected from the new cohorts of students-future makers of knowledge-once the current social re-organization of higher education systems becomes fully established. To address these questions the international, interdisciplinary cast of authors in this volume provides a multitude of possible scenarios for future development of the systems of higher education. This book on "Sustainable Futures of Higher Education" captures the current trends and perspectives of the Knowledge Makers from various nations of the world on meeting and greeting the challenges of globalization and the pressures of the knowledge economy. It makes a strong case for universities of tomorrow sustaining their autonomous thinking and yet nurturing an environment of collaborative partnership with society, corporate and industry to fuel innovations in plenty and continuous supply of new science and technologies. Higher Education has been and shall remain a powerful vehicle of national and global transformation. I see a great value of the publication in impacting the minds of the leaders in higher education around the globe for revitalizing the universities. Professor P. B Sharma, President of Association of Indian Universities, AIU How should the higher education system be in the globalization era? In this book Jaan Valsiner and his colleagues analyze, criticize the existing and propose a new higher education system. When we say "higher education", three different layers are supposed to be there-- the lower, the middle and the higher. The latter has the function of production of new knowledges. Without new knowledge, our societies are never improving. Authors warn commercialized systems such as the "Bologna system" overestimate the homogeneity of education. ""Universities without Borders" would guarantee both diversity and innovation in the higher education systems. Professor Tatsuya Sato, Dean of Research, Ritsumekan University

Developmental Relations among Mind, Brain and Education - Essays in Honor of Robbie Case (Hardcover, 2010): Michel Ferrari,... Developmental Relations among Mind, Brain and Education - Essays in Honor of Robbie Case (Hardcover, 2010)
Michel Ferrari, Ljiljana Vuletic
R4,219 Discovery Miles 42 190 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Robert S. Siegler Robbie Case: A Modern Classic About 15 years ago, Robbie asked me what I thought of a talk we had just heard. I indicated that I hadn't much liked it and noted several serious problems. Robbie agreed with all of the criticisms, but said that he nonetheless liked the talk, because there was one good idea in it that he could use. I agreed with him that the idea was a good one, but it took me a while to understand the wisdom of his position. If there's one useful idea in a talk, then hearing it has been worthwhile, even if the talk also has numerous de?ciencies. On that day and on many others, talking with Robbie changed my thinking for the better. Robbie Case was in many ways a classic developmental psychologist of the old school. The depth and breadth of his theory; the range of age groups, populations, and topics that he studied; and his efforts to connect theory and application are all reminiscent of the greats of the past: Baldwin, Dewey, Piaget, Vygotsky, and Bruner.

Metacognitive Mindscapes - Understanding Secondary EFL Writing Students' Systems of Knowledge (Hardcover): Sin Wang Chong Metacognitive Mindscapes - Understanding Secondary EFL Writing Students' Systems of Knowledge (Hardcover)
Sin Wang Chong
R1,662 Discovery Miles 16 620 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Synthesizing research on metacognition and intersecting it with studies on second and foreign language writing, Sin Wang Chong puts forward a conceptual framework of metacognition and metacognitive knowledge that is employed as an analytical lens to examine junior secondary EFL students' writing proficiencies. The exploration takes into account three facets of metacognitive knowledge, namely person knowledge, task knowledge, and strategic knowledge. Based on data garnered from interviews, open-ended questionnaires, and think-aloud sessions with students, the book analyzes the three types of metacognitive knowledge - theorized as a system - of junior secondary students with high, average, and low writing proficiencies. Discussion of the findings offers an expanded understanding of the factors that potentially affect students' writing proficiencies, which will inform the teaching of primary and secondary EFL writing teachers to be more learner-centered. The book will appeal to researchers and teachers interested in metacognition and metacognitive knowledge.

Self Managed Learning and the New Educational Paradigm (Hardcover): Ian Cunningham Self Managed Learning and the New Educational Paradigm (Hardcover)
Ian Cunningham
R4,488 Discovery Miles 44 880 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Self Managed Learning and the New Educational Paradigm proposes revolutionary change to the educational system. The overwhelming research evidence is that the sum total of educational and training input accounts typically for only 10-20% of what makes a person an effective human being. Balancing theory, evidence and practice, this ground-breaking book demonstrates that current structures in education are ill-equipped to support a learning-based approach. It establishes the case that learning, as a core human activity, is too important to be left to schools and other educational institutions. The book goes beyond just a critique of current practice in showing how a New Educational Paradigm can work. Self Managed Learning College (for 9-17 year olds) has no classrooms, no lessons, no imposed timetable and no imposed curriculum. This is a place where students can learn whatever they want, in any way they want and whenever they want. And it works - as evidenced by the lives of former students and from academic research. Dr Ian Cunningham, its founder, draws also on his extensive work in using Self Managed Learning in many of the world's largest organisations to show how this new paradigm can be put into practice. The book blends the unequivocal research evidence that we need a New Educational Paradigm with a real live demonstration of what it could look like. It should be essential reading for anyone wanting to see how a new approach to education can be achieved.

J. Wallin
R2,461 R1,942 Discovery Miles 19 420 Save R519 (21%) Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This work examines the impoverished image of life presupposed by the legacy of transcendent and representational thinking that continues to frame the limits of curricular thought. Analyzing the ways in which modern institutions colonize desire and overdetermine the life of its subject, this book draws upon the anti-"Oedipal "philosophy of Gilles Deleuze, revolutionary artistic practice, and an unorthodox curriculum genealogy to rethink the pedagogical project as a task of concept creation for the liberation of life and instantiation of a "people yet to come." This book invites academics, artists, and graduate students to engage the contemporary struggles of curriculum theory, educational philosophy, and pedagogical practice with a new set of conceptual tools for thinking radical difference.

Curriculum as Meditative Inquiry (Hardcover): A. Kumar Curriculum as Meditative Inquiry (Hardcover)
A. Kumar
R1,395 Discovery Miles 13 950 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Curriculum As Meditative Inquiry provides a detailed analysis of the relationship among consciousness, meditative inquiry, and education by engaging with three key questions: In what ways do the characteristic features of human consciousness--fear, conditioning, becoming, and fragmentation--undermine self-awareness in educational experience? What is meditative inquiry, and how can it help in cultivating awareness, which, in turn, can help in the understanding and transformation of human consciousness? In what ways can we re-imagine curriculum as a space for meditative inquiry that may provide transformative educational experiences for teachers and their students? These questions and their answers hold profound implications for educators of all kinds.

Teaching Boys - Developing classroom practices that work (Paperback): Martin Mills Teaching Boys - Developing classroom practices that work (Paperback)
Martin Mills
R891 Discovery Miles 8 910 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Persistently cheeky, disruptive, even aggressive boys can be found in classrooms everywhere, as can the victims of bullying. These boys' behaviours often pose a problem to themselves as well as to others. As the hotly contested debates about boys' education swirl around them, what can teachers actually do to improve boys' performance in the classroom?Teaching Boys provides a practical framework for teachers to improve boys' education in ways that are appropriate for their school context and also sustainable. Drawing on intensive research in classrooms where innovative teachers are achieving good outcomes with boys, Keddie and Mills show how other teachers can learn from their success. They acknowledge that there are no simple solutions, but show that what teachers do in the classroom really does matter. They emphasise the importance of understanding the impact of dominant and subversive masculinities at all levels of schooling, on both boys and girls.' What is original about this book is that it marries theory and practice in a way that speaks to the everyday realities and concerns of teachers who work with boys in schools'Associate Professor Wayne Martino, The University of Western Ontario 'What is impressive about Teaching Boys is the way in which Keddie and Mills pull together the best research on boys and schooling with the best research on pedagogies.'Professor Bob Lingard, The University of Edinburgh
