The Causes of Structural Unemployment - Four Factors that Keep People from the Jobs they Deserve (Hardcover): T. Janoski The Causes of Structural Unemployment - Four Factors that Keep People from the Jobs they Deserve (Hardcover)
T. Janoski
R1,422 Discovery Miles 14 220 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

There is a specter haunting advanced industrial countries: structural unemployment. Recent years have seen growing concern over declining jobs, and though corporate profits have picked up after the Great Recession of 2008, jobs have not. It is possible that "jobless recoveries" could become a permanent feature of Western economies. This illuminating book focuses on the employment futures of advanced industrial countries, providing readers with the sociological imagination to appreciate the bigger picture of where workers fit in the new international division of labor. The authors piece together a puzzle that reveals deep structural forces underlying unemployment: skills mismatches caused by a shift from manufacturing to service jobs; increased offshoring in search of lower wages; the rise of advanced communication and automated technologies; and the growing financialization of the global economy that aggravates all of these factors. Weaving together varied literatures and data, the authors also consider what actions and policy initiatives societies might take to alleviate these threats. Addressing a problem that should be front and center for political economists and policymakers, this book will be illuminating reading for students of the sociology of work, labor studies, inequality, and economic sociology.

Gender and Employment in Rural China (Hardcover): Jing Song Gender and Employment in Rural China (Hardcover)
Jing Song
R4,206 Discovery Miles 42 060 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

With China's rapid advancements in urbanization and industrialization, there has been significant labor movement away from agriculture in the rural regions. Using four village case studies, Song examines how this restructuring process affects the rural population. Much of her research is centered on their various perceptions and reactions towards the market reforms. How are their lives reshaped through the employment transition? Along with the changes of family life and the diversification of development models, how do an individual's gender and background play a role in determining employment? These are the broad questions that Song addresses through detailed analysis of four different villages, in light of China's move towards decentralization of its rural economy.

On Unemployment - A Micro-Theory of Economic Justice: Volume 1 (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2015): Mark R. Reiff On Unemployment - A Micro-Theory of Economic Justice: Volume 1 (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2015)
Mark R. Reiff
R3,363 Discovery Miles 33 630 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

With unemployment at historically high rates that show signs of becoming structural, there is a pressing need for an in-depth exploration of this economic injustice. Unemployment is one of the problems most likely to put critical pressure on our political institutions, disrupt the social fabric of our way of life, and even threaten the continuation of liberalism itself. Despite the obvious importance of the problem of unemployment, however, there has been a curious lack of attention paid to this issue by contemporary non-Marxist political philosophers. On Unemployment explores the moral implications of the problem of unemployment despite the continuing uncertainty involving both its causes and its cures. Reiff takes up a series of questions about the nature of unemployment and what justice has to tell us about what we should do, if anything, to alleviate it. The book comprehensively discusses the related theory and suggests how we might implement these more general observations in the real world. It addresses the politics of unemployment and the extent to which opposition to some or all of the book's various proposals stem not from empirical disagreements about the best solutions, but from more basic moral disagreements about whether the reduction of unemployment is indeed an appropriate moral goal. This exciting new text will be essential for scholars and readers across business, economics, and finance, as well as politics, philosophy, and sociology.

The Boundaryless Career - A New Employment Principle for a New Organizational Era (Hardcover): Michael B. Arthur, Denise M.... The Boundaryless Career - A New Employment Principle for a New Organizational Era (Hardcover)
Michael B. Arthur, Denise M. Rousseau
R4,579 Discovery Miles 45 790 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Organizational restructuring and global, hypercompetition have revolutionized careers and destroyed the traditional blueprint for advancement and career success. This book details the new forms work takes in the new organizational era where worker mobility has become critical to the well-being and learning of both people and firms.
The Boundaryless Career approaches the new principle of the boundaryless career in five directions. The first section helps the reader explore the nature of boundarlyess careers by highlighting some of their essential elements. The second section turns to competitive advantage and the role of workers' knowledge. The thirs section concentrates on the role of the social structure in the organizing of work. The fourth section turns to focus on how boundaryless careers affect personal development and growth. The fifth section addresses the demands boundaryless careers create for schools, communities, and other social institutions. Introductory and concluding chapters by the editors offer frameworks for conceptualizing careers now and in the future.
The Boundarly Career provides a conceptual map of new career and employment forms to the prospective benefit of people making career choices, companies re-crafting human resource practices, schools and universities re-considering their roles, and policy-makers concerned with regional or national competitiveness. It will be essential reading for scholars in a range of social science disciplines spanning themes of economics, management, education, organizational behavior, and the psychology and sociology of work. It will also appeal broadly to free thinkers interested in the changing nature of careers and employment as both people and firms tackle the realities of increasingly open markets and global competition.

Happiness, Growth, and the Life Cycle (Hardcover): Richard A. Easterlin Happiness, Growth, and the Life Cycle (Hardcover)
Richard A. Easterlin; Edited by Holger Hinte, Klaus F. Zimmermann
R2,186 Discovery Miles 21 860 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The second in a series of books published with the IZA, this volume presents Richard Easterlin's outstanding research on the analysis of subjective well-being, and on the relationship between demographic developments and economic outcomes. In both fields, his work has laid the foundations for enlarging the scope of traditional economic analysis and has increased our understanding of behaviour in several important domains, such as fertility choices, labour market behaviour, and the determinants of individual well-being. In various seminal contributions, Easterlin has demonstrated the importance of material aspirations and relative economic status for human behaviour. This book is a collection of 11 of his key papers, revised and edited to make a cohesive book. New material includes an Introduction from the editors, two section Introductions from Easterlin, and an Epilogue from Easterlin.

Jobs and Economic Development - Strategies and Practice (Hardcover, New): Robert Giloth Jobs and Economic Development - Strategies and Practice (Hardcover, New)
Robert Giloth
R4,581 Discovery Miles 45 810 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"Job-centered economic development" integrates approaches from the fields of economic development, employment training, social services, and community development, making access to good jobs a primary outcome. Its strategies focus on connecting disadvantaged adults and youth to family-supporting jobs in their neighborhoods, cities, and regional economies, and ensuring that those jobs are sustainable, providing the basis for long-term careers. Workable policies and practices for job-centered economic development are vitally important to agencies responsible for implementing welfare reform and workforce policy reform. It is a key element of the emerging "new federalism" in U.S. government, and therefore a development strategy critical to the future success of state and local governments.

The collection of perspectives in Jobs and Economic Development combines an understanding of today?s labor market with evaluations of current approaches to poverty alleviation. Case studies of successful jobs projects illustrate the ingredients needed for effective programs while also identifying the key factors related to program replication and bringing workforce innovations to scale. Finally, the book explores and documents the role of community organizing to bring about effective workforce development, the challenges for evaluators as they seek to understand the impact of these jobs projects, and how the politics of jobs plays out at the local and state levels.

How Non-Permanent Workers Learn and Develop - Challenges and Opportunities (Paperback): Helen Bound, Karen Evans, Sahara Sadik,... How Non-Permanent Workers Learn and Develop - Challenges and Opportunities (Paperback)
Helen Bound, Karen Evans, Sahara Sadik, Annie Karmel
R1,243 Discovery Miles 12 430 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

How Non-Permanent Workers Learn and Develop is an empirically based exploration of the challenges and opportunities non-permanent workers face in accessing quality work, learning, developing occupational identities and striving for sustainable working lives. Based on a study of 100 non-permanent workers in Singapore, it offers a model to guide thinking about workers' learning and development in terms of an 'integrated practice' of craft, entrepreneurial and personal learning-to-learn skills. The book considers how strategies for continuing education and training can better fit with the realities of non-permanent work. Through its use of case studies, the book exams the significance of non-permanent work and its rise as a global phenomenon. It considers the reality of being a non-permanent worker and reactions to learning opportunities for these individuals. The book draws these aspects together to present a conceptual frame of 'integrated practices', challenging educational institutions and training providers to design and deliver learning and the enacted curriculum not as separate pieces of a puzzle, but as an integrated whole. With conclusions that have wider salience for public policy responses to the rise of non-permanent work, this book will be of great interest to academics and researchers in the fields of adult education, educational policy and lifelong learning.

Labour Law and the Gig Economy - Challenges posed by the digitalisation of labour processes (Hardcover): Jo Carby-Hall, Lourdes... Labour Law and the Gig Economy - Challenges posed by the digitalisation of labour processes (Hardcover)
Jo Carby-Hall, Lourdes Mella Mendez
R4,212 Discovery Miles 42 120 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This international book analyses the impact of digitisation in labour markets, on labour relationships and also on labour processes. The rapid progress of modern disruptive technologies and AIs and their multiple applications to each phase of the labour production system, are changing the production rules on a global scale with significant impacts in every aspect of work. As new technologies transform work patterns and change the type of jobs available - destroying some while creating others - and even the nature of the tasks performed, numerous legal problems arise which are challenging to legislators and legal scholars who need to find appropriate solutions to them. Considering the labour law issues which have been created by technological developments and currently affect the work of millions worldwide, this book highlights the full scope of these issues, suggesting solutions to emerging problems and ways to mitigate the risks brought about through technological advancement. Approaching the present debate with perspectives on legal problems with expertise from a wide range of different countries, this book presents informed and scholarly studies which answer the challenges that new technologies present in labour markets, private lives and labour processes.

Working Women of Collar City - Gender, Class, and Community in Troy, 1864-86 (Paperback): Carole Turbin Working Women of Collar City - Gender, Class, and Community in Troy, 1864-86 (Paperback)
Carole Turbin
R538 Discovery Miles 5 380 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Why have some working women succeeded at organizing in spite of obstacles to labor activity? Under what circumstances were they able to form alliances with male workers? Carole Turbin explores these and other questions by examining the case of Troy, New York. In the 1860s, Troy produced nearly all the nation's detachable shirt collars and cuffs. The city's collar laundresses were largely Irish immigrants. Their union was officially the nation's first women's labor organization, and one of the best organized. Turbin provides a new perspective on gender and shows that women's family ties are not necessarily a conservative influence but may encourage women's and men's collective action.

The Multilevel Politics of Trade (Paperback): Jorg Broschek, Patrica Goff The Multilevel Politics of Trade (Paperback)
Jorg Broschek, Patrica Goff
R979 Discovery Miles 9 790 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Multilevel Politics of Trade presents a timely comparative analysis of eight federations (plus the European Union) to explore why some sub-federal actors have become more active in trade politics in recent years. As the contributing authors find, there is considerable variation in the intensity and modes of sub-federal participation. This they attribute to three key factors: the distinctive institutional features of federal systems; the nature and scope of trade policy and trade agreements; and the extent of social mobilization that accompanies a particular trade policy conversation. As a whole, The Multilevel Politics of Trade argues that sub-federal actors' interests (jurisdictional, political, and economic) are what motivate them to participate in trade debates. However, institutional configurations, coupled with the influence of civil society actors, political parties, and others determine the nature and scope of that participation. Informed by a deep knowledge of federal dynamics, this volume provides extensive comparative analyses of all seven of the North American and European federations and represents a significant intervention into the study of both federalism and political economy.

Job Matching, Wage Dispersion, and Unemployment (Paperback): Dale T. Mortensen, Christopher A Pissarides Job Matching, Wage Dispersion, and Unemployment (Paperback)
Dale T. Mortensen, Christopher A Pissarides
R1,159 Discovery Miles 11 590 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Dale T. Mortensen and Christopher A. Pissarides are the recipients (with Peter Diamond) of the Nobel memorial Prize in Economics 2010. They have made path-breaking contributions to the analysis of markets with search and matching frictions, which account for much of the success of job search theory and the flows approach in becoming a leading tool for microeconomic and macroeconomic analysis of labor markets. Both scientists have gained groundbreaking insights through individual as well as joint research. Consequently, this volume not only features several papers which helped shape the equilibrium search model, including some early contributions which have initiated the research on what is known today as the search and matching model of the labor market, but it also presents a joint paper by the IZA Prize Laureates, which is a complete statement of the equilibrium search and matching model with endogenous job creation and job destruction. As part of the IZA Prize Series, the book presents a selection of their most important work which has highly enriched research on unemployment as an equilibrium phenomenon, on labor market dynamics, and on cyclical adjustment.

Wages, School Quality, and Employment Demand (Paperback): David Card, Alan B. Krueger Wages, School Quality, and Employment Demand (Paperback)
David Card, Alan B. Krueger; Edited by Randall K.Q. Akee, Klaus F. Zimmermann
R1,352 Discovery Miles 13 520 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

David Card and Alan B. Krueger have made substantial contributions to the field of Labor Economics. Their influential work focuses on policy-relevant issues and spans vast and important topics, including: unemployment, minimum wage, migration, measurement error, unions, wage differentials among various groups in the US, labor demand, social insurance, and technological change. Card and Krueger have also been extremely influential in econometrics methodology; they were at the forefront of employing an 'experimental' approach in their research design and implementation. Both of these IZA prize winners have made significant methodological contributions on instrumental variable estimation, measurement error, regression discontinuity methods, and the use of 'natural' experiments. This book provides an overview of their most important work and is divided two main parts: the first section focuses on school quality and the differences in wages across groups in the US; the second part concentrates on the effect of changes in the minimum wage on employment and wage setting. In section introductions, Card and Krueger offer their insight into these two areas and discuss the historical context for their research.

International Trade and Unemployment - On the Redistribution of Trade Gains When Firms Matter (Paperback, 2013 ed.): Marco De... International Trade and Unemployment - On the Redistribution of Trade Gains When Firms Matter (Paperback, 2013 ed.)
Marco De Pinto
R2,653 Discovery Miles 26 530 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Economic theory and empirical research confirm that the rising international integration caused an increase in aggregate income at least for the industrialized countries, although trade liberalization is no Pareto improvement. In the empirical literature, there is a consensus that the international integration implies a destruction of low-skilled job vacancies and an increase in income, while the conclusions are mixed concerning the implication for the overall unemployment rate. This book seeks to find theoretical explanations to these empirical regularities. The book poses three questions: What are the implications of trade liberalization for the labor market in the presence of trade unions if we account for both firm and worker heterogeneity? What are the implications of a redistribution policy if the government chooses unemployment benefits to partially compensate the losers of trade liberalization?, and what is the optimal redistribution scheme for trade gains if the government explicitly takes into account the consequences for the income distribution? This book presents a rigorous theoretical analysis to answer the questions posed. Beside the well-known firm-selection effect on goods markets caused by trade liberalization, a selection process on the labor market -the worker-selection effect - is presented. The book also argues that if welfare is measured in the traditional manner, i.e. income per capita, compensating the loser of trade liberalization by paying unemployment benefits decreases welfare, but the intensity of the reduction differs with respect to the chosen funding of the unemployment benefits. Another significant contribution of this book is that if the objective function of the government, i.e. the modified welfare function, includes both aggregate income and income inequality, the redistribution of trade gains can lead to an increase in welfare.

Agricultural Policy, Agribusiness, and Rent-Seeking Behaviour (Paperback, 3rd Revised edition): Andrew Schmitz, Charles Moss,... Agricultural Policy, Agribusiness, and Rent-Seeking Behaviour (Paperback, 3rd Revised edition)
Andrew Schmitz, Charles Moss, Troy G Schmitz, G.Cornelis van Kooten, H. Carole Schmitz
R1,605 Discovery Miles 16 050 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Costing billions of dollars annually, international trade in agricultural products is impactful and influenced by several factors, including climate change, food policy, and government legislation. The third edition of Agricultural Policy, Agribusiness, and Rent-Seeking Behaviour provides comprehensive economic analyses of the policies that affect agriculture and agribusiness in Canada and the United States. Looking at current agricultural policies, the third edition includes new chapters on food pyramids, climate change, and GMOs, while also highlighting the effect of international policies on Canadian trade, including the problematic US ethanol policy. The new edition addresses current issues, including how the COVID-19 pandemic has negatively affected agricultural value chains and played a hand in the ongoing growth in opioid use. Including a number of key findings, and discussing current debates on topics including foreign ownership of Canadian farmland, Agricultural Policy, Agribusiness, and Rent-Seeking Behaviour will appeal to students in agricultural economics and policy, as well as policymakers, agricultural firms, energy companies, and readers wishing to reduce their nation’s carbon footprint.

Job Skills and Minority Youth - New Program Directions (Hardcover): Barton J. Hirsch Job Skills and Minority Youth - New Program Directions (Hardcover)
Barton J. Hirsch
R2,815 Discovery Miles 28 150 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Minority youth unemployment is an enduring economic and social concern. This book evaluates two new initiatives for minority high school students that seek to cultivate marketable job skills. The first is an after-school program that provides experiences similar to apprenticeships, and the second emphasizes new approaches to improving job interview performance. The evaluation research has several distinct strengths. It involves a randomized controlled trial, uncommon in assessments of this issue and age group. Marketable job skills are assessed through a mock job interview developed for this research and administered by experienced human resource professionals. Mixed methods are utilized, with qualitative data shedding light on what actually happens inside the programs, and a developmental science approach situating the findings in terms of adolescent development. Beneficial for policy makers and practitioners as well as scholars, Job Skills and Minority Youth focuses on identifying the most promising tactics and addressing likely implementation issues.

Mark Considine, Jenny M. Lewis, Siobhan O'Sullivan, Els Sol
R3,363 Discovery Miles 33 630 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Getting Welfare to Work traces the radical reform of the Australian, UK, and Dutch public employment services systems. Starting with major changes from 1998, this book examines how each national system has moved from traditional public services towards more privately provided and market-based methods. Each of these three countries developed innovative forms of contracting-out and complex incentive regimes to motivate welfare clients and to control the agencies charged with helping them. The Australian system pioneered the use of large, national contracts for services to all unemployed jobseekers. By the end of our study period this system was entirely outsourced to private agencies. Meanwhile the UK elected a form of contestability under Blair and Cameron, culminating in a new public-private financing model known as the 'Work Programme'. The Dutch had evolved their far more complex system from a traditional public service approach to one using a variety of specific contracts for private agencies. These innovations have changed welfare delivery and created both opportunities and new constraints for policy makers. Getting Welfare to Work tells the story of these bold policy reforms from the perspective of street-level bureaucrats. Interviews and surveys in each country over a fifteen year period are used to critically appraise this central pillar of the welfare state. The original data analysed in Getting Welfare to Work provides a unique comparative perspective on three intriguing systems. It points to new ways of thinking about modes of governance, system design, regulation of public services, and so-called activation of welfare clients. It also sheds light on the predicament of third sector organisations that contract to governments through competitive tenders with precise performance monitoring, raising questions of 'mission drift'.

Regulating the Risk of Unemployment - National Adaptations to Post-Industrial Labour Markets in Europe (Paperback): Jochen... Regulating the Risk of Unemployment - National Adaptations to Post-Industrial Labour Markets in Europe (Paperback)
Jochen Clasen, Daniel Clegg
R1,448 Discovery Miles 14 480 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Regulating the Risk of Unemployment offers a systematic comparative analysis of the recent adaptation of European unemployment protection systems to increasingly post-industrial labour markets. These systems were mainly designed and institutionalized in predominantly industrial economies, characterized by relatively standardized employment relationships and stable career patterns, as well as plentiful employment opportunities even for those with low skills. Over the past two to three decades they have faced the challenge of an accelerating shift to a primarily service-based economy, accompanied by demands for greater flexibility in wages and terms and conditions in low-skill segments of the labour market as well as pressures to maximise labour force participation given the more limited potential for productivity-led growth. The book develops an original framework for analysing adaptive reform in unemployment protection along three discrete dimensions of institutional change, which are termed benefit homogenization, risk re-categorization, and activation. This framework is then used to structure analysis of twenty years of unemployment protection reform in twelve European countries. In addition to mapping reforms along these dimensions, the country studies analyse the political and institutional factors that have shaped national patterns of adaptation. Complementary comparative analyses explore the effects of benefit reforms on the operation of the labour market, assess evolving patterns of working-age benefit dependency, and examine the changing role of active labour market policies in the regulation of the risk of unemployment.

Youth and the Rural Economy in Africa - Hard Work and Hazard (Hardcover): James Sumberg Youth and the Rural Economy in Africa - Hard Work and Hazard (Hardcover)
James Sumberg; Contributions by Jordan Chamberlin, Barbara Crossouard, Mairead Dunne, Justin Flynn, …
R2,928 Discovery Miles 29 280 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book unites recent findings from quantitative and qualitative research from across Africa to illuminate how young men and women engage with the rural economy and imagine their futures, and how development policies and interventions can find traction with these realities. Through framing, overview and evidence-based chapters, this book provides a critical perspective on current discourse, research and development interventions around youth and rural development. Chapters are organized around commonly-made foundational claims: that large numbers of young people are leaving rural areas, have no interest in agriculture, cannot access land, can be the engine of rural transformation, are stuck in permanent waithood, and that the rural economy can provide a wealth of opportunity. This book: Engages with and challenges current research, policy and development debates. Considers social difference as a way of examining the category of youth. Is written by authors from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds, providing varied perspectives. This book draws from existing literature and new analysis of several multi-country and multi-disciplinary studies, focusing on gender and other aspects of social difference. It is suitable for researchers, policy makers and advocates, as well as postgraduate students in international development and agricultural economics.

The Declining Importance of Race and Gender in the Labor Market provides historical background on employment discrimination and wage discrepancies in the United States and on government efforts to address employment discrimination. It examines the two federal institutions tasked with enforcing Title VII and the 1964 Civil Rights Act: the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) and the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP). It also provides a quantitative analysis of racial and gender wage gaps and seeks to determine what role, if any, the EEOC and the OFCCP had in narrowing these gaps over time and analyzes the data to determine the extent of employment discrimination today.
